We present time resolved photometry of the cataclysmic variable SDSS J081610.84+453010.2 and have established for the first time that it is an eclipsing dwarf nova. We observed an outburst of the system which lasted about 11 days and had an amplitude of 3.4 magnitudes above mean quiescence. From an analysis of the eclipse times of minimum during the outburst, we determined the orbital period as Porb = 0.2096(4) d or 5.030(10) h. The orbital period places it above the period gap in the distribution of orbital periods of dwarf novae. The eclipses are of short duration (average FWHM = 10.7 min or 0.036 of the orbital period) and shallow (average 0.4 mag during outburst and 0.6 magnitude in quiescence), suggesting a grazing eclipse.

Cataclysmic variable SDSS J143317.78+101123.3 with P=0.054241 d (78.1-min) was suspected to be a possible dwarf nova of WZ Sge type with the sub-stellar donor, but without detected outbursts so far. Checking the newly available data from ATLAS survey has revealed the outburst by at least 6 magnitudes in September 2020, thus confirming the dwarf nova nature of this object with the brown dwarf secondary. Other projects and individual observers have stopped their monitoring of this target several days before the outburst. This finding strengthens the value of observing the twilight zone by the pr…
We present phase-resolved optical spectroscopy of the eclipsing nova-like cataclysmic variable EC21178-5417 obtained between 2002 and 2013. The average spectrum of EC21178-5417 shows broad double-peaked emission lines from HeII 4686 Å (strongest feature) and the Balmer series. The high-excitation feature, CIII/NIII at 4640-4650 Å, is also present and appears broad in emission. A number of other lines, mostly HeI, are clearly present in absorption and/or emission. The average spectrum of EC21178-5417 taken at different months and years shows variability in spectral features, especially in the B…
The purpose of this work is to extend a sample of accurately modeled, benchmark-grade eclipsing binaries with accurately determined masses and radii. We select four "well-behaved" Kepler binaries, KIC2306740, KIC4076952, KIC5193386 and KIC5288543, each with at least 8 double-lined spectra from the apogee instrument that is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys III and IV, and from the Hobby-Eberly High Resolution Spectrograph. We obtain masses and radii with uncertainties of 2.5% or less for all four systems. Three of these systems have orbital periods longer than 9 days, and thus populate an …
We report seven new eclipse timings for the novalike variable 1RXS J064434.5+334451. An analysis of our data, along with all previously available timings (36 published and 16 unpublished), yields a best-fitting linear ephemeris of BJD$_\mathrm{ecl} = 2,453,403.7611(2) + 0.269~374~43(2)~\mathrm{E}$. We find a somewhat improved fit with a quadratic ephemeris given by: BJD$_\mathrm{ecl} = 2,453,403.7598 + 0.269~374~87~\mathrm{E} - 2.0\times10^{-11}~\mathrm{E}^2$, which suggests that the orbital period may be decreasing at a rate given by $\dot P \simeq -1.5\times10^{-10}$.
We observed the deeply eclipsing SU UMa-type dwarf nova V4140 Sgr and established the very short supercycle of 69.7(3) d. There were several short outbursts between superoutbursts. These values, together with the short orbital period (0.06143 d), were similar to, but not as extreme as, those of ER UMa-type dwarf novae. The object is thus the first, long sought, eclipsing ER UMa-like object. This ER UMa-like nature can naturally explain the high (apparent) quiescent viscosity and unusual temperature profile in quiescence, which were claimed observational features against the thermal-tidal insta…
We present the new results of our long-term observational project to detect the small variations in the orbital periods of low-mass and short-period eclipsing binaries. About 120 new precise mid-eclipse times were obtained for three relatively well-known dwarf eclipsing binaries: SDSS J143547.87+373338.5 (P = 0.126 d), NSVS 07826147 (0.162 d), and NSVS 14256825 (0.110 d). Observed-minus-calculated (O-C) diagrams of these systems were analyzed using all accurate timings, and, where possible, new parameters of the light-time effect were calculated. For the first time, we derive (or improve upon …
We present the Apache Point Observatory BG40 broadband and simultaneous Gemini $r$-band and $i$-band high-speed follow-up photometry observations and analysis of the 40.5 minute period eclipsing detached double-degenerate binary SDSS J082239.54$+$304857.19. Our APO data spans over 318 days and includes 13 primary eclipses, from which we precisely measure the system's orbital period and improve the time of mid-eclipse measurement. We fit the light curves for each filter individually and show that this system contains a low-mass DA white dwarf with radius $R_A=0.031\pm0.006~{\rm R_\odot}$ and a …
High speed photometry of faint Cataclysmic Variables - VII. Targets selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Catalina Real-time Transient Survey
We report the analysis of time-series of optical photometry of SDSS J0926+3624 collected with the Liverpool Robotic Telescope between 2012 February and March while the object was in quiescence. We combined our median eclipse timing with those in the literature to revise the ephemeris and confirm that the binary period is increasing at a rate $\dot{P}=(3.2 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-13} \, s/s$. The light curves show no evidence of either the orbital hump produced by a bright spot at disc rim or of superhumps; the average out-of-eclipse brightness level is consistently lower than previously reported. …
Spectra of 38 candidate or known cataclysmic variables are presented. Most are candidate dwarf novae or systems containing possible highly magnetic white dwarfs, while a few (KR Aur, LS Peg, V380 Oph and V694 Mon) are previously known objects caught in unusual states. Individual spectra are used to confirm a dwarf nova nature or other classification while radial velocities of 15 systems provide orbital periods and velocity amplitudes that aid in determining the nature of the objects. Our results substantiate a polar nature for four objects, find an eclipsing SW Sex star below the period gap, a…

Eclipsing binaries are instrumental to our understanding of fundamental stellar parameters. With the arrival of ultra-wide cameras and large area photometric monitoring programs, numerous eclipsing binaries systems have been reported photometrically. However, due to the expensive efforts to follow up them spectroscopically, most of their basic properties remain unexplored. In this paper we exploited the eclipsing binary light curves delivered by the all-sky Catalina sky surveys, in tandem with the single shot spectroscopic survey from SDSS, and identify a double-lined M-dwarf eclipsing binary …
Two white dwarfs in ultrashort binaries with detached, eclipsing, likely substellar companions detected by K2
利用K2 Campaign 10中扩展的开普勒任务的数据,我们确定了两个包含白矮星和冷伴星的食双星,它们的轨道周期非常短,只有71.2分钟(SDSS J1205-0242,a.k.a. EPIC 201283111)和72.5 min(SDSS J1231+0041,a.k.a. EPIC 248368963)。
