We examine the experimental absence of standing spin wave modes in thin magnetic films, by means of atomistic spin dynamics simulations. Using Co on Cu(001) as a model system, we demonstrate that by increasing the number of layers, the "optical" branches predicted from adiabatic first-principles calculations are strongly suppressed, in agreement with spin-polarized electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements reported in the literature. Our results suggest that a dynamical analysis of the Heisenberg model is sufficient in order to capture the strong damping of the standing modes.
We analyze resonant magneto-elastic interactions between standing perpendicular spin wave modes (exchange magnons) and longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in free-standing hybrid metal-ferromagnet bilayer and trilayer structures. Whereas the ferromagnetic layer acts as a magnetic cavity, all metal layers control the frequencies and eigenmodes of acoustic vibrations. The here proposed design allows for achieving and tuning the spectral and spatial modes overlap between phonons and magnons that results in their strong resonant interaction. Realistic simulations for gold-nickel multilayers show th…
Permalloy films with one-dimensional (1D) profile modulation of submicron periodicity are fabricated based on commercially available DVD-R discs and studied using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) method and micromagnetic numerical simulations. The main resonance position shows in-plane angular dependence which is strongly reminiscent of that in ferromagnetic films with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. The main signal and additional low field lines are attributed to multiple standing spin wave resonances defined by the grating period. The results may present interest in magnetic metamaterials and mag…
CaCo2As2 is a unique itinerant system having strong magnetic frustration. Here we report the effect of electron doping on the physical properties resulting from Ni substitutions for Co. The A-type antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN = 52 K for x = 0 decreases to 22 K with only 3 percent Ni substitution and is completely suppressed for x > 0.11. For 0.11 < x < 0.52 strong ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations develop as revealed by magnetic susceptibility chi(T) measurements. Heat-capacity Cp(T) measurements reveal the presence of FM quantum spin fluctuations for 0.11 < x < 0.52. Our density-…
Imaging the magnetic configuration of thin-films has been a long-standing area of research. Since a few years, the emergence of two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials calls for innovation in the field of magnetic imaging. As the magnetic moments are extremely small, standard techniques like SQUID, torque magnetometry, magnetic force microscopy and Kerr effect microscopy are challenging and often lead to the detection of parasitic magnetic contributions or spurious effects. In this work, we report a new magnetic microscopy technique based on the combination of magnetic circular dichroism and S…
Quasiparticle interference on the surface of 3D topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ induced by cobalt adatom in the absence of ferromagnetic ordering
We demonstrate the low temperature suppression of the platinum (Pt) spin Nernst angle in bilayers consisting of the antiferromagnetic insulator hematite ($α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) and Pt upon measuring the transverse spin Nernst magnetothermopower (TSNM). We show that the observed signal stems from the interplay between the interfacial spin accumulation in Pt originating from the spin Nernst effect and the orientation of the Néel vector of $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, rather than its net magnetization. Since the latter is negligible in an antiferromagnet, our device is superior to ferromagnetic structures, allowin…
We report the integration of the insulating ferromagnet GdN with epitaxial films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 and present detailed structural, magnetic and transport characterization of the heterostructures. Fabrication of multi-channel Hall bars with bare and GdN-capped sections enables direct comparison of magnetotransport properties. We show that the presence of the magnetic overlayer results in suppression of weak anti-localization at the top surface.
We formulate a strong-coupling theory for perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in ferromagnetic bilayers with the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC). Employing the Hoffmann boundary condition and the energy-flow continuity across the interface, we show that the PSSWs are still quantized but with non-integral quantum numbers, in sharp contrast to that of a single layer. The magnon-magnon coupling is characterized by the spectrum splitting which is linear with the IEC in the weak-coupling region, but getting saturated in the strong-coupling limit. Analytical predictions are verified by full…
Suppression of Spin Pumping Between Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ and Cu by a Graphene Interlayer
