We demonstrate the low temperature suppression of the platinum (Pt) spin Nernst angle in bilayers consisting of the antiferromagnetic insulator hematite ($α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) and Pt upon measuring the transverse spin Nernst magnetothermopower (TSNM). We show that the observed signal stems from the interplay between the interfacial spin accumulation in Pt originating from the spin Nernst effect and the orientation of the Néel vector of $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, rather than its net magnetization. Since the latter is negligible in an antiferromagnet, our device is superior to ferromagnetic structures, allowing to unambiguously distinguish the TSNM from thermally excited magnon transport (TMT), which usually dominates in ferri/ferromagnets due to their non-zero magnetization. Evaluating the temperature dependence of the effect, we observe a vanishing TSNM below ~100 K. We compare these results with theoretical calculations of the temperature dependent spin Nernst conductivity and find excellent agreement. This provides evidence for a vanishing spin Nernst angle of Pt at low temperatures and the dominance of extrinsic contributions to the spin Nernst effect.

Anomalous Nernst effect, a result of charge current driven by temperature gradient, provides a probe of the topological nature of materials due to its sensitivity to the Berry curvature near the Fermi level. Fe3GeTe2, one important member of the recently discovered two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials, offers a unique platform for anomalous Nernst effect because of its metallic and topological nature. Here, we report the observation of large anomalous Nernst effect in Fe3GeTe2. The anomalous Hall angle and anomalous Nernst angle are about 0.07 and 0.09 respectively, far larger than…
The spin Hall effect allows generation of spin current when charge current is passed along materials with large spin orbit coupling. It has been recently predicted that heat current in a non-magnetic metal can be converted into spin current via a process referred to as the spin Nernst effect. Here we report the observation of the spin Nernst effect in W. In W/CoFeB/MgO heterostructures, we find changes in the longitudinal and transverse voltages with magnetic field when temperature gradient is applied across the film. The field-dependence of the voltage resembles that of the spin Hall magnetor…
Electric generation of spin current via spin Hall effect is of great interest as it allows an efficient manipulation of magnetization in spintronic devices. Theoretically, spin current can be also created by a temperature gradient, which is known as spin Nernst effect. Here, we report spin Nernst effect-induced transverse magnetoresistance in ferromagnet (FM)/non-magnetic heavy metal (HM) bilayers. We observe that the magnitude of transverse magnetoresistance (i.e., planar Nernst signal) in FM/HM bilayers is significantly modified by HM and its thickness. This strong dependence of transverse m…
Harmonic measurements of the longitudinal and transverse voltages in Bi-Sb/Co bilayers are presented. A large second harmonic voltage signal due to the ordinary Nernst effect is observed. In experiments where a magnetic field is rotated in the film plane, the ordinary Nernst effect shows the same angular dependence in the transverse voltage as the damping-like spin-orbit torque and in the longitudinal voltage as the unidirectional spin-Hall magneto-resistance respectively. Therefore, the ordinary Nernst effect can be a spurious signal in spin-orbit torque measurements, leading to an overestima…
Recently, Seebeck coefficients of ferromagnetic conductors are found to be spin-dependent. However straightforward method of accurately determining its spin polarization is still to be developed. Here, we have derived a linear dependence of anomalous Nernst coefficient on anomalous Hall angle with scaling factor related to spin polarization of Seebeck coefficient, which has been experimentally verified in [Co/Pt]n superlattices. Based on the dependence, we have also evaluated spin polarization of Seebeck coefficient of some ferromagnetic conductors. Besides, we have also found a new mechanism …
In the presented report, the Nernst-Ettingshausen effect in layered conductors is investigated. Considering a Fermi surface (FS) consisting of a slightly corrugated cylinder and two corrugated planes distributed periodically in the momentum space, the thermoelectric effects are considered under general assumptions for the value of a magnetic breakdown probability. As a result of an external generalized force, the FS sheets in layered conductors with a multisheet FS appear to be so close that the charge carriers (as a result of magnetic breakdown) can move from one FS sheet to another. In addit…
The topological Hall effect (THE) and its thermoelectric counterpart, the topological Nernst effect (TNE), are hallmarks of the skyrmion lattice phase (SkL). We observed the giant TNE of the SkL in centrosymmetric Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$, comparable in magnitude to the largest anomalous Nernst signals in ferromagnets. Significant enhancement (suppression) of the THE occurs when doping electrons (holes) to Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$. On the electron-doped side, the topological Hall conductivity approaches the characteristic threshold $\sim 1000\,\left(\mathrm{Ωcm}\right)^{-1}$ for the intrinsic regime. We use the f…
Bismuth is an archetypal semimetal with gigantic spin-orbit coupling and it has been a major source material for the discovery of seminal phenomena in solid state physics for more than a century. In recent years, spin current transports in bismuth have also attracted considerable attention. In this paper, we theoretically study both spin Hall effect (SHE) and spin Nernst effect (SNE) in bismuth, based on relativistic band structure calculations. First, we find that there are three independent tensor elements of spin Hall conductivity (SHC) and spin Nernst conductivity (SNC), namely, $Z_{yx}^z$…
Weyl semimetals are characterized by the presence of massless band dispersion in momentum space. When a Weyl semimetal meets magnetism, large anomalous transport properties emerge as a consequence of its topological nature. Here, using $in-situ$ spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy combined with $ab\ initio$ calculations, we visualize the spin-polarized Weyl cone and flat-band surface states of ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGa films with full remanent magnetization. We demonstrate that the anomalous Hall and Nernst conductivities systematically grow when the magnetization-induced massiv…
In elemental bismuth, emptying the low-index Landau levels is accompanied by giant Nernst quantum oscillations. The Nernst response sharply peaks each time a Landau level intersects the chemical potential. By studying the evolution of these peaks when the field rotates in three perpendicular planes defined by three high-symmetry axes, we have mapped the angle-resolved Landau spectrum of the system up to 12 T. A theoretical model treating electrons at L point with an extended Dirac Hamiltonian is confronted with the experimentally-resolved spectrum. We obtain a set of theoretical parameters yie…
Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn$_3$Ge, an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a Kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall / Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D0$_{19}$ Mn$_3$Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse …
The ZrSiS-type compounds are Dirac semimetals and have been attracting considerable interest in recent years due to their topological electronic properties and possible applications. In particular, gapped Dirac nodes can possess large spin Berry curvatures and thus give rise to large spin Hall effect (SHE) and spin Nernst effect (SNE), which may be used to generate pure spin current for spintronics and spin caloritronics without applied magnetic field or magnetic material. In this paper we study both SHE and SNE in ZrXY (X = Si, Ge; Y = S, Se, Te) based on \textit{ab initio} relativistic band …
A large transverse thermoelectric response, known as anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has been recently observed in several topological magnets. Building a thermopile employing this effect has been the subject of several recent propositions. Here, we design and build a thermopile with an array of tilted adjacent crystals of Mn$_3$Sn. The design employs a single material and replaces pairs of P and N thermocouples of the traditional design with hermaphroditic legs. The design exploits the large lag angle between the applied field and the magnetization, which we attribute to the interruption of mag…
The magnetic spin Hall effect (MSHE) is an anomalous charge-to-spin conversion phenomenon which occurs in ferromagnetic materials. In contrast to the conventional spin Hall effect (SHE), being a time-reversal even effect, the magnetic counterpart is time-reversal odd. In this work, we use ab initio calculations to investigate the MSHE for the bulk ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The magnitudes of the MSHE of Fe and Co are comparable to those of the SHE, but the MSHE is strongly dependent on the electron lifetime and the MSHE and SHE can moreover have opposite signs. For Ni the MSHE is smaller tha…
The utilization of ferromagnetic (FM) materials in thermoelectric devices allows one to have a simpler structure and/or independent control of electric and thermal conductivities, which may further remove obstacles for this technology to be realized. The thermoelectricity in FM/non-magnet (NM) heterostructures using an optical heating source is studied as a function of NM materials and a number of multilayers. It is observed that the overall thermoelectric signal in those structures which is contributed by spin Seebeck effect and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is enhanced by a proper selection …
Materials exhibiting controllable magnetic phase transitions are currently in demand for many spintronics applications. Here we investigate from first principles the electronic structure and intrinsic anomalous Hall, spin Hall and anomalous Nernst response properties of the FeRh metallic alloy which undergoes a thermally driven antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition. We show that the energy band structures and underlying Berry curvatures have important signatures in the various Hall effects. Specifically, the suppression of the anomalous Hall and Nernst effects in the AFM state an…
Transition metal monosilicides CoSi, CoGe, RhSi and RhGe in the chiral cubic B20 structure have recently been found to host unconventional chiral fermions beyond spin-1/2 WFs, and also exhibit exotic physical phenomena such as long Fermi arc surface states, GME and quantized CPGE. Thus, exploring novel spin-related transports in these unconventional chiral fermion semimetals may open a new door for spintronics and spin caloritronics. In this paper, we study the intrinsic SHE and SNE in the CoSi family based on ab initio relativistic band structure calculations. First, we find that unlike nonch…
We compare ferromagnetic resonance measurements of Permalloy Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (Py) films sputtered onto Cu(111) films with and without a graphene (Gr) interlayer grown by chemical vapor deposition before Py deposition. A two-angle sputtering method ensured that neither Gr nor Py was degraded by the sample preparation process. We find the expected damping enhancement from spin pumping for the Py/Cu case and no detectable enhancement for the Py/Gr/Cu case. Since damping is sensitive to effects other than spin pumping, we used magnetometry to verify that differences in Py magnetostatic properti…
We have measured spin Hall effects in spin glass metals, CuMnBi alloys, with the spin absorption method in the lateral spin valve structure. Far above the spin glass temperature Tg where the magnetic moments of Mn impurities are randomly frozen, the spin Hall angle of CuMnBi ternary alloy is as large as that of CuBi binary alloy. Surprisingly, however, it starts to decrease at about 4Tg and becomes as little as 7 times smaller at 0.5Tg. A similar tendency was also observed in anomalous Hall effects in the ternary alloys. We propose an explanation in terms of a simple model considering the rela…
Spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance is one of the most common technique to determine spin hall angles, Edelstein lengths or spin diffusion lengths of a large variety of materials. In recent years, rising concerns have appeared regarding the interpretation of these experiments, underlining that the signal could arise purely from thermoelectric effects, rather than from coherent spin pumping. Here, we propose a method to evaluate the presence or absence of thermal effects in spin pumping signals, by combining bolometry and spin pumping by ferromagnetic resonance measurements, and comparing t…

Proximity effect of spin orbit coupling is investigated through anomalous Hall effect in Pt/Co2FeAl and Pt/Permalloy bilayers. A series of nontrivial magnetotransport behaviors, resulting from a strong impact of phonons on skew scattering, is observed in these films with ultrathin ferromagnetic layers. The parameters representing skew scattering, side jump and intrinsic contributions are dramatically enhanced when the ferromagnetic layer is very thin, and they have clear linear dependences on the reciprocal of ferromagnetic layer thickness, indicating a powerful influence of Pt/Ferromagnet int…
In order to gain insight into suppression of the ferromagnetic ordering temperature, local studies utilizing 99,101Ru zero-field spin-echo NMR, along with complimentary magnetization, high-angle x-ray diffraction, and Ru K-edge XAFS measurements, have been carried out on samples of SrRuO3 annealed at both "ambient" (atmospheric) pressure and "high-pressure" oxygen (600 atm). For the "high pressure" sample, the results indicate structural disorder and the existence of some vacancies on the Ru sites, along with a reduced magnetic ordering temperature.
We report measurements of the thermal Hall effect in single crystals of both pristine and isotopically substituted strontium titanate. We discovered a two orders of magnitude difference in the thermal Hall conductivity between $SrTi^{16}O_3$ and $^{18}O$-enriched $SrTi^{18}O_3$ samples. In most temperature ranges, the magnitude of thermal Hall conductivity ($κ_{xy}$) in $SrTi^{18}O_3$ is proportional to the magnitude of the longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ_{xx}$), which suggests a phonon-mediated thermal Hall effect. However, they deviate in the temperature of their maxima, and the therma…
We report a high-resolution angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy study of the evolution of the electronic structure of FeSe1-xSx single crystals. Isovalent S substitution onto the Se site constitutes a chemical pressure which subtly modifies the electronic structure of FeSe at high temperatures and induces a suppression of the tetragonal-symmetry-breaking structural transition temperature from 87K to 58K for x=0.15. With increasing S substitution, we find smaller splitting between bands with dyz and dxz orbital character and weaker anisotropic distortions of the low temperature Fermi sur…
