In this report we discuss the organization of different levels of nature and the corresponding space-time structures by the consideration of a particular problem of time irreversibility. The fundamental time irreversibility problem consists in the following: how to reconcile the time-reversible microscopic dynamics and the irreversible macroscopic one. The recently proposed functional formulation of mechanics is aimed to solve this problem. The basic concept of this formulation is not a material point and a trajectory, like in the traditional formulation of mechanics, but a probability density function. Even if we deal with a single particle (not with an ensemble of particles), we describe its state as a probability density function. We justify this approach using measurement theory. A particular problem in the framework of the irreversibility problem is the derivation of the Boltzmann kinetic equation from the equations of microscopic dynamics. We propose a procedure for obtaining the Boltzmann equation from the Liouville equation based on the BBGKY hierarchy, the recently proposed functional formulation of classical mechanics, and the distinguishing between two scales of space-time, i.e., macro- and microscale. The notion of a space-time structure is introduced. It takes into account not only the space-time itself (i.e., a pseudo-Riemannian manifold), but also a characteristic length and time. The space-time structures form a hierarchy in sense that the initial values for the processes on the microscopic space-time structure (interactions of the particles) are assigned from the processes on the macroscopic one (kinetic phenomena).
The time evolution governed by the Boltzmann kinetic equation is compatible with mechanics and thermodynamics. The former compatibility is mathematically expressed in the Hamiltonian and Godunov structures, the latter in the structure of gradient dynamics guaranteeing the growth of entropy and consequently the approach to equilibrium. We carry all three structures to the Grad reformulation of the Boltzmann equation (to the Grad hierarchy). First, we recognize the structures in the infinite Grad hierarchy and then in several examples of finite hierarchies representing extended hydrodynamic equa…
In this work, we generalize M. Kac's original many-particle binary stochastic model to derive a space homogeneous Boltzmann equation that includes a linear combination of higher-order collisional terms. First, we prove an abstract theorem about convergence from a finite hierarchy to an infinite hierarchy of coupled equations. We apply this convergence theorem on hierarchies for marginals corresponding to the generalized Kac model mentioned above. As a corollary, we prove propagation of chaos for the marginals associated to the generalized Kac model. In particular, the first marginal converges …
We examine the duality relating the equilibrium dynamics of the mean-field $p$-spin ferromagnets at finite size in the Guerra's interpolation scheme and the Burgers hierarchy. In particular, we prove that - for fixed $p$ - the expectation value of the order parameter on the first side w.r.t. the generalized partition function satisfies the $p-1$-th element in the aforementioned class of nonlinear equations. In the light of this duality, we interpret the phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit of the statistical mechanics model with the development of shock waves in the PDE side. We also o…
In arXiv:1201.4067 and arXiv:1611.08030, Eyink and Shi and Chibbaro et al., respectively, formally derived an infinite, coupled hierarchy of equations for the spectral correlation functions of a system of weakly interacting nonlinear dispersive waves with random phases in the standard kinetic limit. Analogously to the relationship between the Boltzmann hierarchy and Boltzmann equation, this spectral hierarchy admits a special class of factorized solutions, where each factor is a solution to the wave kinetic equation (WKE). A question left open by these works and highly relevant for the mathema…
The rigorous derivation of the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation from more fundamental quantum many-particle systems is a challenging open problem in mathematics. In this paper, we exam the weak coupling limit of quantum N-particle dynamics. We assume the integral of the microscopic interaction is zero and we assume W^{4,1} per-particle regularity on the coressponding BBGKY sequence so that we can rigorously commute limits and integrals. We prove that, if the BBGKY sequence does converge in some weak sense, then this weak-coupling limit must satisfy the infinite quantum Maxwell-Boltzmann hierarchy in…
In the works on Statistical Mechanics and Statistical Physics, when deriving the distribution of particles of ideal gases, one uses the method of Lagrange multipliers in a formal way. In this paper we treat rigorously this problem for Bose--Einstein, Fermi--Dirac and Maxwell--Boltzmann entropies and present a complete study in the case of the Maxwell--Boltzmann entropy. Our approach is based on recent results on series of convex functions.
We propose a new truncation scheme for Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy. We approximate the three particle distribution function $f_{3}(1,2,3,t)$ in terms of $f_{2}(1,2,t)$, $f_{1}(3,t)$ and two point correlation functions $\left\lbrace g_{2}(1,3,t), g_{2}(2,3,t)\right\rbrace $. Further $f_{2}$ is expressed in terms of $f_{1}(1,t)$ and $g_{2}(1,2,t)$ to close the hierarchy, resulting a set of coupled kinetic equations for $f_{1}$ and $g_{2}$. In this paper we show that, for velocity independent correlations, the kinetic equation for $f_{1}$ reduces to the model proposed by…
This paper presents a numerical approximation technique for the Boltzmann equation based on a moment system approximation in velocity dependence and a discontinuous Galerkin finite-element approximation in position dependence. The closure relation for the moment systems derives from minimization of a suitable ϕ-divergence. This divergence-based closure yields a hierarchy of tractable symmetric hyperbolic moment systems that retain the fundamental structural properties of the Boltzmann equation. The resulting combined discontinuous Galerkin moment method corresponds to a Galerkin approximation …
This paper is concerned with approximations of the Boltzmann equation based on the method of moments. We propose a generalization of the setting of the moment-closure problem from relative entropy to ϕ-divergences and a corresponding closure procedure based on minimization of ϕ-divergences. The proposed description encapsulates as special cases Grad's classical closure based on expansion in Hermite polynomials and Levermore's entropy-based closure. We establish that the generalization to divergence-based closures enables the construction of extended thermodynamic theories that avoid essential …

狭义相对论定律是经典物理学相应定律的单参数(光速)概括。这些由洛伦兹变换强加的推广,既影响了各种物理观测量(例如动量、能量等)的定义,也影响了理论的数学装置。在这里,按照[Phys. Rev.
The kinetic theory of Maxwell and Boltzmann has been the subject of major scientific controversies. The alleged incompatibility between the reversible nature of the equations of classical mechanics and the increase of entropy, which, in the kinetic theory of gases, is a mathematical property of the Boltzmann equation known as the H Theorem, was one of the most basic arguments against the validity of kinetic theory. About a century later, in 1974, O. Lanford proposed a strategy to prove that the Boltzmann equation describes a particular asymptotic limit of Newton's equations of classical mechan…
