We study the optical contrast for single and multilayer graphene deposited on a Au/SiO2/Si substrate. Our results prove that optical microscopy allows for easy and quick localization, identification and counting of graphene layers. Visibility depends on the thicknesses of the Au and SiO2 layers as well as the wavelength of the light used. We propose optimum parameters for the detection of graphene.
We consider the fluctuation-induced (Casimir) pressure in peptide films deposited on GaAs, Ge, and ZnS substrates which are either in dielectric or metallic state. Calculations of the Casimir pressure are performed in the framework of fundamental Lifshitz theory employing the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivities of all involved materials. The electric conductivity of semiconductor substrates is taken into account within the experimentally and thermodynamically consistent approach. According to our results, the Casimir pressure in peptide films deposited on dielectric-type semiconducto…
We present an alternative methodology for calculating the quasi-particle energy, energy loss, and optical spectra of a molecule deposited on graphene or a metallic substrate. To test the accuracy of the method it is first applied to the isolated benzene (C6H6) molecule. The quasiparticle energy levels and especially the energies of the benzene excitons (triplet, singlet, optically active and inactive) are in very good agreement with available experimental results. It is shown that the vicinity of the various substrates (pristine/doped graphene or (jellium) metal surface) reduces the quasiparti…
Spin, anomalous, and valley Hall effects in graphene-based hybrid structures are studied theoretically within the Green function formalism and linear response theory. Two different types of hybrid systems are considered in detail: (i) graphene/boron nitride/cobalt(nickel), and (ii) graphene/YIG. The main interest is focused on the proximity-induced exchange interaction between graphene and magnetic substrate and on the proximity-enhanced spin-orbit coupling. The proximity effects are shown to have a significant influence on the electronic and spin transport properties of graphene. To find the …
A novel approach to control the grain size of oxide thin film materials has been investigated. Perovskite BaTiO3 shows interesting grain structures when deposited on gold predeposited, (111)-oriented, singlecrystal SrTiO3 substrates. Solid oxide films grow epitaxially on patterned seed layers and show variations in grain size relative to the films deposited on SrTiO3 directly.
Chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene is often presented as a scalable solution to graphene device fabrication, but to date such graphene has exhibited lower mobility than that produced by exfoliation. Using a boron nitride underlayer, we achieve mobilities as high as 37,000 cm^2/Vs, an order of magnitude higher than commonly reported for CVD graphene and better than most exfoliated graphene. This result demonstrates that the barrier to scalable, high mobility CVD graphene is not the growth technique but rather the choice of a substrate that minimizes carrier scattering.
The influence of a patterned substrate on obliquely deposited, exchange biased Co/CoO films was studied. It was found that substrates decorated with nanoparticle patterns provide the option to manipulate the orientation of the magnetic easy axis in obliquely deposited thin films. The complementary methods of SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry were used to disentangle the different contributions to the magnetic hysteresis of such complex magnetic systems.
We report a detailed study of surface and interface properties of pulsed-laser deposited NiMnSb films on Si (100) substrate as a function of film thickness. As the thickness of films is reduced below 35 nm formation of a porous layer is observed. Porosity in this layer increases with decrease in NiMnSb film thickness. These morphological changes of the ultra thin films are reflected in the interesting transport and magnetic properties of these films. On the other hand, there are no influences of compositional in-homogeneity and surface/interface roughness on the magnetic and transport properti…
We performed Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy and imaging in a high resolution scanning electron microscope to locally and selectively excite and investigate the plasmonic property of a multibranched gold nanostar on silicon substrate. This method allows us to map the local density of optical states from the nanostar with a spatial resolution down to a few nanometers. We resolve both in spatial and spectral domain, different plasmon modes associated with the nanostar. Finite- difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations are performed to support the experimental observations. We inv…
Recent experiments show the possibility of realization of the Majorana quasiparticles at the end of the low dimensional structures. In this type of systems, interplay between spin orbit coupling, superconductivity and magnetic field leads to the emergence of the Majorana bound states in the topologically non-trivial phase. Here, we study the nanowire located partially at the normal and superconducting base, using microscopic model of this structure and the Bogoliubov--de~Gennes technique. We discuss the possibility of the leakage of the Majorana bound state, located at the part above supercond…
A mesoscopic continuum model is employed to analyse the transport mechanisms and structure formation during the redistribution stage of deposition experiments where organic molecules are deposited on a solid substrate with periodic stripe-like wettability patterns. Transversally invariant ridges located on the more wettable stripes are identified as very important transient states and their linear stability is analysed. It is found that there exist two different instability modes that result (i) at large ridge volume in the formation of bulges that spill from the more wettable stripes onto the…
We have designed and built a near-field scanning microwave microscope, which has been used to measure the local microwave response and the local density-of-states (LDOS) in the area including the boundary between the gold deposited and the non-deposited region on highly-orientated pyrolytic graphite at a frequency of about 7.3 GHz. We have succeeded in measuring the spatial variation of both the LDOS and the surface resistance. It can be observed that the surface resistance in gold deposited region with the metallic tunneling spectra is smaller than that in the non-deposited region with the U-…
Strong spatial confinement and highly reduced dielectric screening provide monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with strong many-body effects, thereby possessing optically forbidden excitonic states (i.e., dark excitons) at room temperature. Herein, we explore the interaction of surface plasmons with dark excitons in hybrid systems consisting of stacked gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) and monolayer WS2. We observe a narrow Fano resonance when the hybrid system is surrounded by water, and we attribute the narrowing of the spectral Fano linewidth to the plasmon-enhanced decay of dark K-…
We present a theoretical model for describing light scattering from randomly distributed Au nanoparticles on a substrate, including the clustering effect. By using the finite-element Green function method and spherical harmonic basis functions, we are able to calculate the polarization-dependent reflectivity spectra of the system (modeled by randomly distributed nanoparticles coupled with clusters) efficiently and accurately. The calculated ellipsometric spectra of the system with clusters can adequately describe the experimental data for the whole frequency range. We find that the clustering …
The spin-orbit coupling can lead to exotic states of matter and unexpected behavior of the system properties. In this paper, we investigate the influence of spin-orbit coupling induced by proximity effects on a monolayer of superconductor (with s-wave or d-wave pairing) placed on an insulating bulk. We show that the critical temperatures $T_{c}$ of the superconducting states can be tuned by the spin-orbit coupling both in the case of on-site and inter-site pairing. Moreover, we discuss a possibility of changing the location of the maximal $T_{c}$ from the half-filling into the underdoped or ov…
We present detailed Raman studies of graphene deposited on gallium nitride nanowires with different variations in height. Our results show that different density and height of nanowires being in contact with graphene impact graphene properties like roughness, strain and carrier concentration as well as density and type of induced defects. Detailed analysis of Raman spectra of graphene deposited on different nanowire substrates shows that bigger differences in nanowires height increase graphene strain, while higher number of nanowires in contact with graphene locally reduce the strain. Moreover…
We present a comprehensive first-principles study of the electronic charge redistribution in atomically sharp LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$(001) heterointerfaces of both n- and p-types allowing for non-stoichiometric composition. Using two different computational methods within the framework of the density functional theory (linear combination of atomic orbitals and plane waves) we demonstrate that conducting properties of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$(001) heterointerfaces strongly depend on termination of LaAlO$_3$ (001) surface. We argue that both the polar "catastrophe" and the polar distortion scenarios may …
Atomically thin materials, like semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (S-TMDs), are highly sensitive to the environment. This opens up an opportunity to externally control their properties by changing their surroundings. We investigate the effect of several metallic substrates on the optical properties of MoSe$_2$ monolayer (ML) deposited on top of them with photoluminescence and reflectance contrast techniques. The optical spectra of MoSe$_{2}$ MLs deposited on Pt, Au, Mo and Zr have distinctive metal-related lineshapes. In particular, a substantial variation in the intensity ratio …
Synthesis and characterization of high-quality single-crystal WSe2 films on highly-insulating substrate is presented. We demonstrate for the first time that the presence of gold nanoparticles in the basal plane of a WSe2 film can enhance its Raman scattering intensity. The experimentally observed enhancement ratio in the Raman signal correlates well with the simulated electric field intensity using a three-dimensional electromagnetic software and theoretical calculation. This work provides guidelines for the use of two-dimensional WSe2 films as a SERS substrate.
We model the optical visibility of monolayer and bilayer graphene deposited on a silicon/silicon oxide substrate or thermally annealed on the surface of silicon carbide. We consider reflection and transmission setups, and find that visibility is strongest in reflection reaching the optimum conditions when the bare substrate transmits light resonantly. In the optical range of frequencies a bilayer is approximately twice as visible as a monolayer thereby making the two types of graphene distinguishable from each other.
We propose a new method to use gapped graphene as barrier to confine electrons in gapless graphene and form a good quantum dot, which can be realized on an oxygen-terminated $SiO_{2}$ substrate partly H-passivated. In particular, we use ferromagnetic insulators deposited on top of barrier which give rise to a spin related energy spectrum and transport properties. Compared to the complexity of etched quantum dots in graphene, the setup suggested here is a promising candidate for practical applications.
We present theoretical calculations for the absorption properties of protein-coated gold nanoparticles on graphene and graphite substrates. As the substrate is far away from nanoparticles, numerical results show that the number of protein bovine serum molecules molecules aggregating on gold surfaces can be quantitatively determined for gold nanoparticles with arbitrary size by means of the Mie theory and the absorption spectra. The presence of graphitic substrate near protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles substantially enhances the red shift of the surface plasmon resonances of the nanoparticl…
With recent advances in the areas of nanostructure fabrication and molecular spintronics the idea of using single molecule magnets as building blocks for the next generation electronic devices becomes viable. A particular example represents a metal-organic complex in which organic ligands surround a rare-earth element or transition metal. Recently, it was explicitly shown that the relative position of the ligands with respect to each other can be reversibly changed by the external voltage without any need of the chemical modification of the sample. This opens a way of the electrical tuning of …
We have performed scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in Pb-deposited bilayer Graphene (BLG) on SiC(0001) substrate to investigate the dependence of the electronic structures on Pb-deposition amount. We have observed that the Pb atoms form islands by STM and the $π$ bands of the BLG shift toward the Fermi level by ARPES. This hole-doping-like energy shift is enhanced as the amount of Pb is increased, and we were able to tune the Dirac gap to the Fermi level by 4 ML deposition. Considering the band dispersion, we suggest that hole-doping-lik…
Ab-initio density functional theory calculations are performed to study the electronic properties of a MoS2 monolayer deposited over a SiO2 substrate in the presence of interface impurities and defects. When MoS2 is placed on a defect-free substrate the oxide plays an insignificant role, since the conduction band top and the valence band minimum of MoS2 are located approximately in the middle of the SiO2 band-gap. However, if Na impurities and O dangling bonds are introduced at the SiO2 surface, these lead to localized states, which modulate the conductivity of the MoS2 monolayer from n- to p-…
We performed Scanning Thermal Microscopy measurements on single layers of chemical-vapor-deposited -CVD- graphene supported by different substrates, namely SiO2, Al2O3 and PET using a double-scan technique to remove the contribution to the heat flux through the air and the cantilever. Then, by adopting a simple lumped-elements model, we developed a new method that allows determining, through a multi-step numerical analysis, the equivalent thermal properties of thermally conductive coatings of nanometric thickness. In this specific case we found that our CVD graphene is thermally equivalent, fo…
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study on morphological changes in gold nanostructures deposited on Si (100) upon annealing under different vacuum conditions has been reported. Au thin films of thickness ~2.0 nm were deposited under high vacuum condition (with the native oxide at the interface of Au and Si) using thermal evaporation. In-situ, high temperature (from room temperature (RT) to 850\degreeC) real time TEM measurements showed the evaluation of gold nanoparticles into rectangular/square shaped gold silicide structures. This has been attributed to selective thermal decomposition …
Polyoxometalates (POMs) are redox-active molecular oxides, which attract growing interest for their integration into nano-devices, such as high-density data storage non-volatile memories. In this work, we investigated the electrostatic deposition of the negatively charged [H7P8W48O184]33- POM onto positively charged 8-amino-1-octanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) preformed onto gold substrates or onto an array of gold nanodots. The ring-shaped [H7P8W48O184]33- POM was selected as an example of large POMs with high charge storage capacity. To avoid the formation of POM aggregates onto th…
We report on the gold assisted epitaxial growth of Ge nanostructures under ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions (\approx3\times 10-10 mbar) on clean Ge (100) surfaces. For this study, \approx2.0 nm thick Au samples were grown on the substrate surface by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Thermal annealing was carried out inside the UHV chamber at temperature \approx500°C and following this, well ordered gold nanostructures placed on pedestal Ge were formed. A \approx 2 nm Ge film was further deposited on the above surface while the substrate was kept at a temperature of \approx 500°C. The height of t…
Pairs of electrodes with nanometer separation (nano-gap) are achieved through an electromigration-induced break-junction (EIBJ) technique at room temperature. Lithographically defined gold (Au) wires are formed by e-beam evaporation over oxide coated silicon substrates silanized with (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and then subjected to electromigration at room temperature to create a nanometer scale gap between the two newly formed Au electrodes. The Si-O-Si covalent bond at the SiO$_2$ surface and the Au-sulphur (Au-S) bond at the top evaporated Au side, makes MPTMS as an efficien…
We find that the Casimir pressure in peptide films deposited on metallic substrates is always repulsive which makes these films less stable. It is shown that by adding a graphene sheet on top of peptide film one can change the sign of the Casimir pressure by making it attractive. For this purpose, the formalism of the Lifshitz theory is extended to the case when the film and substrate materials are described by the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivities, whereas the response of graphene to the electromagnetic field is governed by the polarization tensor in (2+1)-dimensional space-time f…
A graphene-based superlattice formed due to the periodic modulation of the band gap has been investigated. Such a modulation is possible in graphene deposited on a strip substrate made of silicon oxide and hexagonal boron nitride. The advantages and some possible problems in the superlattice under consideration are discussed. A model describing such a superlattice is proposed and the dispersion relation between the energy and momentum of carriers has been obtained using the transfer matrix method within this model.
Recent experiments have shown the signatures of Majorana bound states at the ends of magnetic chains deposited on a superconducting substrate. Here, we employ first principles calculations to directly investigate the topological properties of $3d$ transition metal nanochains (i.e., Mn, Cr, Fe and Co). In contrast to the previous studies [Nadj-Perge et al. Science 346, 602 (2014) and Ruby et al. Nano Lett. 17, 4473 (2017)], we found the exact tight binding models in the Wannier orbital basis for the isolated chains as well as for the surface--deposited wires. Based on these models, we calculate…
