We study the geometrical and topological properties of the bulk (environment space) when we modify the geometry or topology of a brane-world. Through the characterization of a spherically symmetric space-time as a local brane-world immersed into six dimensional pseudo-Euclidean spaces, with different signatures of the bulk, we investigate the existence of a topological difference in the immersed brane-world. In particular the Schwarzschild's brane-world and its Kruskal (or Fronsdal) brane-world extension are examined from point of view of the immersion formalism. We prove that there is a change of signature of the bulk when we consider a local isometric immersion and different topologies of a brane-world in that bulk.
In this paper, we investigate the localization of a five-dimensional vector field on a pure geometrical thick brane. In previous work, it was shown that a free massless vector field cannot be localized on such thick brane. Hence we introduce the interaction between the vector field and the background scalar field. Two types of couplings are constructed as examples. We get a typical volcano potential for the first type of coupling and a finite square-well-like potential for the second one. Both of the two types of couplings ensure that the vector zero mode can be localized on the pure geometric…
We consider an anisotropic brane-world model with Bianchi type I and V geometry, without mirror symmetry or any form of junction conditions. The generalized Chaplygin gas, which interpolates between a high density relativistic era and a non-relativistic matter phase, is a popular candidate for the present accelerated expansion of the universe. Considering the generalized Chaplygin gas as a geometrical dark energy, we obtain the general solutions in an exact parametric form for both Bianchi type I and V space-times. Finally, we study the behavior of the observationally important parameters such…
We study the dynamics of a D3-brane moving in the background of a bulk tachyon field of a D3-brane solution of Type-0 string theory. We show that the dynamics on the probe D3-brane can be described by a geometrical tachyon field rolling down its potential which is modified by a function of the bulk tachyon and inflation occurs at weak string coupling, where the bulk tachyon condenses, near the top of the geometrical tachyon potential. We also find a late accelerating phase when the bulk tachyon asymptotes to zero which in the geometrical tachyon picture corresponds to the minimum of the geomet…
This is the next step of uncovering the relation between string theory and exotic smooth R^4. Exotic smoothness of R^4 is correlated with D6 brane charges in IIA string theory. We construct wild embeddings of spheres and relate them to a class of topological quantum Dp-branes as well to KK theory. These branes emerge when there are non-trivial NS-NS H-fluxes where the topological classes are determined by wild embeddings S^2 -> S^3. Then wild embeddings of higher dimensional $p$-complexes into S^n correspond to Dp-branes. These wild embeddings as constructed by using gropes are basic objects t…
In order to localize fermions on branes with codimension one, one usually introduces the Yukawa coupling between fermions and background scalar fields or the recently proposed derivative fermion-scalar coupling in [Phys. Rev. D 89 (2014) 086001]. In this paper, we explore the coupling between a spinor field $Ψ$ and the scalar curvature of spacetime $R$, $ηΨΓ^M\partial_M F(R)γ^5\barΨ$ with $F(R)$ a function of $R$, to investigate localization of the fermion. Because of $Z_2$ symmetry of the extra dimension, the new coupling mechanism proposed here can easily deal with the problem encountered in…
We study the motion of a BPS D3-brane in the NS5-brane ring background. The radion field becomes tachyonic in this geometrical set up. We investigate the potential of this geometrical tachyon in the cosmological scenario for inflation as well as dark energy. We evaluate the spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations generated during tachyon inflation and show that this model is compatible with recent observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) due to an extra freedom of the number of NS5-branes. It is not possible to explain the origin of both inflation and dark energy by using a single …
The generalized Chaplygin gas provides an interesting candidate for the present accelerated expansion of the universe. We explore a geometrical explanation for the generalized Chaplygin gas within the context of brane world theories where matter fields are confined to the brane by means of the action of a confining potential. We obtain the modified Friedmann equations, deceleration parameter and age of the universe in this scenario and show that they are consistent with the present observational data.
We study brane world models which contain local topological defects in the bulk and a (3+1)-dimensional inflating brane. We put the emphasis on new types of solutions that are periodic in the bulk radial coordinate and thus provide examples of "naturally compactified" brane worlds.
There are various different descriptions of Randall-Sundrum (RS) braneworlds. Here we present a unified view of the braneworld based on the gradient expansion approach. In the case of the single-brane model, we reveal the relation between the geometrical and the AdS/CFT approach. It turns out that the high energy and the Weyl term corrections found in the geometrical approach merge into the CFT matter correction found in the AdS/CFT approach. We also clarify the role of the radion in the two-brane system. It is shown that the radion transforms the Einstein theory with Weyl correction into the …
We consider the theory of closed $p$-branes propagating on $(p+1)$-dimensional space-time manifolds. This theory has no local degrees of freedom. Here we study its canonical and BRST structures of the theory. In the case of locally flat backgrounds one can show that the $p$-brane theory is related to another known topological field theory. In the general situation some equivalent actions can also be written for the topological $p$-brane theory.
It is widely recognized that the AdS/CFT correspondence is a useful tool to study strongly coupled field theories. On the other hand, Randall-Sundrum (RS) braneworld models have been actively discussed as a novel cosmological framework. Interestingly, the geometrical set up of braneworlds is quite similar to that in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Hence, it is legitimate to seek a precise relation between these two different frameworks. In this lecture, I will explain how the AdS/CFT correspondence is related to the RS braneworld models. There are two different versions of RS braneworlds, namely, …
It is known that a five-dimensional free vector field $A_{M}$ cannot be localized on Randall-Sundrum (RS)-like thick branes, namely, the thick branes embedded in asymptotic Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. In order to localize a vector field on the RS-like thick brane, an extra coupling term should be introduced. In this paper, we generalize the geometrical coupling mechanism by adding two mass terms ($αRg^{MN}A_{M}A_{N}+βR^{MN}A_{M}A_{N}$) into the action. We decompose the fundamental vector field $A_{M}$ into three parts: transverse vector part $\hat{A}_μ$, scalar parts $ϕ$ and $A_{5}$. Then,…
We study the properties of the topologically nontrivial doublet solution arisen in the biscalar theory with a fourth-power potential introducing an example of the spontaneous breaking of symmetry. We rule out the zero-brane (non-minimal point particle) action for this doublet as a particle with curvature. When quantizing it as the theory with higher derivatives, we calculate the quantum corrections to the mass of the doublet which could not be obtained by means of the perturbation theory.
Using Kaluza-Klein theory we discuss the quantum mechanics of a particle in the background of a domain wall (brane) embedded in extra dimensions. We show that the geometric phases associated with the particle depend on the topological features of those spacetimes. Using a cohomological modeling schema, we deduce a random phase sequence composed of the geometric phases accompanying the periodic evolution over the spacetimes. The random phase sequence is demonstrated some properties that could be experimental verification. We argue that it is related to the nonlocality of quantum entanglement.
We examine the dynamics of the gravitational collapse in a 4-dim Lorentzian brane embedded in a 5-dim bulk with an extra timelike dimension. By considering the collapse of pure dust on the brane we derive a bouncing FLRW interior solution and match it with a corrected Schwarzschild exterior geometry. In the physical domain considered for the parameters of the solution, the analytical extension is built, exhibiting an exterior event horizon and a Cauchy horizon, analogous to the Reissner-Nordström solution. For such an exterior geometry we examine the effects of the bulk-brane corrections in th…
We examine some general properties of a certain class of scalar filed theory models containing non-topological soliton solutions in the context of brane world models with compact large extra dimensions. If a scalar field is allowed to propagate in extra space, then, beside standard Kaluza-Klein type excitations, a whole new class of very massive soliton-type states can exist. Depending on their abundance, they can be important dark matter candidates or give significant contribution to entropy and energy density in our universe. .
5-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic models with a bulk cosmological constant and a minimally coupled scalar field are considered. We have found that in special cases the scalar field can mimic a frustrated (i.e. disordered) networks of topological defects: cosmic strings, domain walls and hyperdomain walls. This equivalence enabled us to obtain 5-dimensional instantonic solutions which can be used to construct brane-world models. In some cases, their analytic continuation to a Lorentzian metric signature give rise to either 4-dimensional flat or inflating branes. Models with arbitrary dime…
We investigate an effective torsion curvature in a second order formalism underlying a two form world-volume dynamics in a $D_5$-brane. In particular, we consider the two form in presence of a background (open string) metric in a $U(1)$ gauge theory. Interestingly the formalism may be viewed via a non-coincident pair of $(D{\bar D})_5$-brane with a global NS two form on an anti brane and a local two form on a brane. The energy-momentum tensor is computed in the six dimensional CFT. It is shown to source a metric fluctuation on a vacuum created pair of $(D{\bar D})_4$-brane at a cosmological ho…
In this paper, we study topological AdS black branes of $(n+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory and investigate their properties. We use the area law, surface gravity and Gauss law interpretations to find entropy, temperature and electrical charge, respectively. We also employ the modified Brown and York subtraction method to calculate the quasilocal mass of the solutions. We obtain a Smarr-type formula for the mass as a function of the entropy and the charge, compute the temperature and the electric potential through the Smarr-type formula and show that these thermodynamic quantit…
We discuss a topological reason why global symmetries are not conserved in quantum gravity, at least when the symmetry comes from compactification of a higher form symmetry. The mechanism is purely topological and does not require any explicit breaking term in the UV Lagrangian. Local current conservation does not imply global charge conservation in a sum over geometries in the path integral. We explicitly consider the shift symmetry of an axion-like field which originates from the compactification of a $p$-form gauge field. Our topological construction is motivated by the brane/black-brane co…
The standard Friedmann universe embedded in a five dimensional and constant curvature bulk is examined without any a priori junction condition between the brane and the bulk. A geometrical explanation for the accelerated expansion of the universe is derived by using a minimum set of assumptions consistent with the brane-world program. It is shown that the extrinsic curvature of the brane can be associated to the dark energy which presumably drives the universe expansion.
We investigate the massive graviton contributions to 4D gravity in a 6D brane world scenario, whose bulk field content can include that of 6D chiral gauged supergravity. We consider a general class of solutions having 3-branes, 4D Poincare symmetry and axisymmetry in the internal space. We show that these contributions, which we compute analytically, can be independent of the brane vacuum energy as a consequence of geometrical and topological properties of the above-mentioned codimension two brane world. These results support the idea that in such models the gravitational interactions may be d…
