Let $\mathcal{N}_{\mathfrak{g}^*}$ be the variety of nilpotent elements in the dual of the Lie algebra of a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field. In \cite{Lu2} Lusztig proposes a definition of a partition of $\mathcal{N}_{\mathfrak{g}^*}$ into smooth locally closed subvarieties (which are indexed by the unipotent classes in the corresponding group over complex numbers) and gives explicit results in types $A$, $C$ and $D$. We discuss type $B$ in this note.
We show that the definition of unipotent (resp. nilpotent) pieces for classical groups given by Lusztig (resp. Lusztig and the author) coincides with the combinatorial definition using closure relations on unipotent classes (resp. nilpotent orbits). Moreover we give a closed formula for a map from the set of unipotent classes (resp. nilpotent orbits) in characteristic 2 to the set of unipotent classes in characteristic 0 such that the fibers are the unipotent (resp. nilpotent) pieces.
We compare orbits in the nilpotent cone of type $B_n$, that of type $C_n$, and Kato's exotic nilpotent cone. We prove that the number of $\F_q$-points in each nilpotent orbit of type $B_n$ or $C_n$ equals that in a corresponding union of orbits, called a type-$B$ or type-$C$ piece, in the exotic nilpotent cone. This is a finer version of Lusztig's result that corresponding special pieces in types $B_n$ and $C_n$ have the same number of $\F_q$-points. The proof requires studying the case of characteristic 2, where more direct connections between the three nilpotent cones can be established. We …
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $\mathbf{k}$, and let Lie$(G)$ be its associated Lie algebra. In his series of papers on unipotent elements in small characteristic, Lusztig defined a partition of the unipotent variety of $G$. This partition is very useful when working with representations of $G$. Equivalently, one can consider certain subsets of the nilpotent variety of Lie$(G)$ called pieces. This approach appears in Lusztig's article from 2011. The pieces for the exceptional groups of type $G_2$, $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$, and $E_8$ in bad charac…
In this paper we study gradings on simple Lie algebras arising from nilpotent elements. Specifically, we investigate abelian subalgebras which are degree 1 homogeneous with respect to these gradings. We show that for each odd nilpotent element there always exists canonically associated "strictly" odd nilpotent element, which allows us to reduce our investigations to the latter.
Using a theorem proved by Bekka and Driutti, we show that if $\mathfrak{f}$ is a freely generated nilpotent Lie algebra of step-two, then almost every irreducible representation of the corresponding Lie group restricted to some lattice $Γ$ is an irreducible representation of $Γ$ if the dimension of the Lie algebra is odd. However, if the dimension of the Lie algebra is even, then almost every unitary irreducible representation of the Lie group restricted to $Γ$ is reducible.
We show that the numbers of nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the dual of exceptional Lie algebra $G_2$ in characteristic $3$ and in the dual of exceptional Lie algebra $F_4$ in characteristic $2$ are finite. We determine the closure relation among nilpotent coadjoint orbits in the dual of Lie algebras of type $B,C,F_4$ in characteristic $2$ and in the dual of Lie algebra of type $G_2$ in characteristic $3$. In each case we give an explicit description of the nilpotent pieces in the dual defined in \cite{CP}, which are in general unions of nilpotent coadjoint orbits, coincide with the earlier case…
Let $\FRAK{g}$ be a classical simple Lie superalgebra. To every nilpotent orbit $\cal O$ in $\FRAK{g}_0$ we associate a Clifford algebra over the field of rational functions on $\cal O$. We find the rank, $k(\cal O)$ of the bilinear form defining this Clifford algebra, and deduce a lower bound on the multiplicity of a $U(\FRAK{g})$-module with $\cal O$ or an orbital subvariety of $\cal O$ as associated variety. In some cases we obtain modules where the lower bound on multiplicity is attained using parabolic induction. The invariant $k(\cal O)$ is in many cases, equal to the odd dimension of th…
Let G be a simple, simply-connected algebraic group over the complex numbers with Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. The main result of this article is a proof that each irreducible representation of the fundamental group of the orbit O through a nilpotent element $e \in \mathfrak g$ lifts to a representation of a Jacobson-Morozov parabolic subgroup of G associated to e. This result was shown in some cases by Barbasch and Vogan in their study of unipotent representations for complex groups and, in general, in an unpublished part of the author's doctoral thesis. In the last section of the article, we s…
In this paper, we find a family $SL^{n,m}$, in any arbitrary dimensions, of cohomologically rigid solvable Lie superalgebras with nilradical the model filiform Lie superalgebra $L^{n,m}$. Moreover, we exhibit a family of cohomologically rigid solvable Lie superalgebras with nilradical the model nilpotent Lie superalgebra of generic characteristic sequence. Both cases correspond to solvable Lie superalgebras of maximal dimension for a given nilradical. Contrariwise, we will show that the family of Lie superalgebras $SL^{n,m}$ can be deformed if defined over a field of odd characteristic.
We develop a general theory of $W$-algebras in the context of supersymmetric vertex algebras. We describe the structure of $W$-algebras associated with odd nilpotent elements of Lie superalgebras in terms of their free generating sets. As an application, we produce explicit free generators of the $W$-algebra associated with the odd principal nilpotent element of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(n+1|n).$
For any nilpotent Lie group $G$ we provide a description of the image of its $C^*$-algebra through its operator-valued Fourier transform. Specifically, we show that $C^*(G)$ admits a finite composition series such that that the spectra of the corresponding quotients are Hausdorff sets in the relative topology, defined in terms of the fine stratification of the space of coadjoint orbits of $G$, and the canonical fields of elementary $C^*$-algebras defined by the successive subquotients are trivial. We give a description of the image of the Fourier transform as a $C^*$-algebra of piecewise conti…
For a twisted affine Lie superalgebra with nonzero odd part, we study {tight irreducible weight modules} with bounded weight multiplicities and show that if the action of nonzero real vectors of each affine component of the zero part is neither completely injective nor completely locally nilpotent, then these modules are parabolically induced.
We show that Spaltenstein varieties of classical groups are pure dimensional when the Jordan type of the nilpotent element involved is an even or odd partition. We further show that they are Lagrangian in the partial resolutions of the associated nilpotent Slodowy slices, from which their dimensions are known to be one half of the dimension of the partial resolution minus the dimension of the nilpotent orbit. The results are then extended to the $σ$-quiver-variety setting.
We prove that the Duflo-Serganova functor $DS_x$ attached to an odd nilpotent element $x$ of $\mathfrak{osp}(m|2n)$ is semisimple, i.e. sends a semisimple representation $M$ of $\mathfrak{osp}(m|2n)$ to a semisimple representation of $\mathfrak{osp}(m-2k|2n-2k)$ where $k$ is the rank of $x$. We prove a closed formula for $DS_x(L(λ))$ in terms of the arc diagram attached to $λ$.
Regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties form a family of subvarieties of the flag variety arising in the study of quantum cohomology, geometric representation theory, and numerical analysis. In this paper we construct a paving by affines of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties for all classical types, generalizing results of de Concini-Lusztig-Procesi and Kostant. This paving is in fact the intersection of a particular Bruhat decomposition with the Hessenberg variety. The nonempty cells of the paving and their dimensions are identified by combinatorial conditions on roots. We use the paving t…
We consider generalizations of the Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone of a simple Lie algebra by replacing the cotangent bundle with certain other vector bundles over the flag variety. We show that the analogue of the Springer sheaf has as direct summands only intersection cohomology sheaves that arise in the Springer correspondence. The fibers of these general maps are nilpotent Hessenberg varieties, and we build on techniques established by De Concini, Lusztig, and Procesi to study their geometry. For example, we show that these fibers have vanishing cohomology in odd degrees. This le…
First, I construct an isomorphism between the categories of (topological) groups of nilpotency class 2 with 2-divisible center and (topological) Lie rings of nilpotency class 2 with 2-divisible center. That isomorphism allows us to construct adjoint and coadjoint representations as usual. For a finite group G of nilpotency class 2 of odd order, I construct a basis in its group algebra C[G], parameterized by elements of g* so that the elements of coadjoint orbits form bases of simple two-side ideals of C[G]. That construction gives us a one-to-one correspondence between G-orbits in g* and class…
In the first part of this paper, we discuss the classical W-algebra $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g}, F)$ associated with a Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and the nilpotent element $F$ in an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-triple. We find a generating set of $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g}, F)$ and compute the Poisson brackets between them. In the second part, which is the main part of the paper, we discuss supersymmetric classical W-algebras. We introduce two different constructions of a supersymmetric classical W-algebra $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g}, f)$ associated with a Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}$ and an odd nilpo…
A p-compact group, as defined by Dwyer and Wilkerson, is a purely homotopically defined p-local analog of a compact Lie group. It has long been the hope, and later the conjecture, that these objects should have a classification similar to the classification of compact Lie groups. In this paper we finish the proof of this conjecture, for p an odd prime, proving that there is a one-to-one correspondence between connected p-compact groups and finite reflection groups over the p-adic integers. We do this by providing the last, and rather intricate, piece, namely that the exceptional compact Lie gr…
