We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in a waveguide of uniform width and infinite length which is ideally divided into three parts: a "vertex region", compactly supported and with non zero curvature, and two "edge regions" which are semi-infinite straight strips. We make the waveguide collapse onto a graph by squeezing the edge regions to half-lines and the vertex region to a point. In a setting in which the ratio between the width of the waveguide and the longitudinal extension of the vertex region goes to zero, we prove the convergence of the operator to a selfadjoint realization of the Laplacian on a two edged graph. In the limit operator, the boundary conditions in the vertex depend on the spectral properties of an effective one dimensional Hamiltonian associated to the vertex region.
The Dirichlet Laplacian between two parallel hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces of any dimension in the presence of a magnetic field is considered in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm-resolvent sense to a Schroedinger operator on the limiting hypersurface whose electromagnetic potential is expressed in terms of principal curvatures and the projection of the ambient vector potential to the hypersurface. As an application, we obtain an effective approximation of bound-state energies and eigenfunctions in thin quantu…
We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces of any dimension, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the hypersurfaces and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the area of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is locally the biggest.
We reconsider the Bargmann-Dirichlet space on the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ and its generalizations considered in [8]. Concretely, we first present a new characterization of such spaces as harmonic spaces of the magnetic Laplacian with suitable domains. Then, we elaborate an associated unitary integral transforms of Bargmann type.
Consider the Dirichlet Laplacian operator $-Δ^D$ in a periodic waveguide $Ω$. On the condition that $Ω$ is sufficiently thin, we show that its spectrum $σ(-Δ^D)$ is absolutely continuous (in each finite region). In addition, we ensure the existence of at least one gap in $σ(-Δ^D)$ and locate it.
Let $Ω$ be some domain in the hyperbolic space $\Hn$ (with $n\ge 2$) and $S_1$ the geodesic ball that has the same first Dirichlet eigenvalue as $Ω$. We prove the Payne-Pólya-Weinberger conjecture for $\Hn$, i.e., that the second Dirichlet eigenvalue on $Ω$ is smaller or equal than the second Dirichlet eigenvalue on $S_1$. We also prove that the ratio of the first two eigenvalues on geodesic balls is a decreasing function of the radius.
The resolvent convergence of self-adjoint operators via the technique of $Γ$-convergence of quadratic forms is adapted to incorporate complex Hilbert spaces. As an application, we find effective operators to the Dirichlet Laplacian with magnetic potentials in very thin bounded tubular regions in space built along smooth closed curves; relatively weak regularity is asked for the potentials, and the convergence is in the norm resolvent sense as the cross sections of the tubes go uniformly to zero.
We prove lower bounds for the Dirichlet Laplacian on possibly unbounded domains in terms of natural geometric conditions. This is used to derive uncertainty principles for low energy functions of general elliptic second order divergence form operators with not necessarily continuous main part.
We prove a two-term Weyl-type asymptotic formula for sums of eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary. Moreover, in the case of a convex domain we obtain a universal bound which correctly reproduces the first two terms in the asymptotics.
We study the optimality of the remainder term in the two-term Weyl law for the Dirichlet Laplacian within the class of Lipschitz regular subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular, for the short-time asymptotics of the trace of the heat kernel we prove that the error term cannot be made quantitatively better than little-$o$ of the second term.
The aim of the paper is to derive spectral estimates on the eigenvalue moments of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the two-dimensional disk with a radially symmetric magnetic field.
By Birman and Skvortsov it is known that if $\Omegasf$ is a planar curvilinear polygon with $n$ non-convex corners then the Laplace operator with domain $H^2(\Omegasf)\cap H^1_0(\Omegasf)$ is a closed symmetric operator with deficiency indices $(n,n)$. Here we provide a Kre\uın-type resolvent formula for any self-adjoint extensions of such an operator, i.e. for the set of self-adjoint non-Friedrichs Dirichlet Laplacians on $\Omegasf$, and show that any element in this set is the norm resolvent limit of a suitable sequence of Friedrichs-Dirichlet Laplacians with $n$ point interactions.
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a planar domain and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the spectrum. We derive the asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This method allows us, for instance, to obtain an approximation for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for a large class of planar domains, under very mild assumptions.
We investigate Dirichlet Laplacian in a straight twisted tube of a non-circular cross section, in particular, its discrete spectrum coming from a local slowdown of the twist. We prove a Lieb-Thirring-type estimate for the spectral moments and present two examples illustrating how the bound depends on the tube cross section.
We study Laplacians associated to a graph and single out a class of such operators with special regularity properties. In the case of locally finite graphs, this class consists of all selfadjoint, non-negative restrictions of the standard formal Laplacian and we can characterize the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians as the largest and smallest Markovian restrictions of the standard formal Laplacian. In the case of general graphs, this class contains the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians and we describe how these may differ from each other, characterize when they agree, and study connections to e…
We study the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian on an unbounded twisted tube with twisting velocity exploding to infinity. If the tube cross section does not intersect the axis of rotation, then its spectrum is purely discrete under some additional conditions on the twisting velocity (D.Krejcirik, 2015). In the current work we prove a Berezin type upper bound for the eigenvalue moments.
We develop the complex scaling method for the Dirichlet Laplacian in a domain with asymptotically cylindrical end. We define resonances as discrete eigenvalues of non-selfadjoint operators, obtained as deformations of the selfadjoint Dirichlet Laplacian $Δ$ by means of the complex scaling. The resonances are identified with the poles of the resolvent matrix elements $((Δ-μ)^{-1}F, G)$ meromorphic continuation in $μ$ across the essential spectrum of $Δ$, where $F$ and $G$ are elements of an explicitly given set of partial analytic vectors. It turns out that the Dirichlet Laplacian has no singul…
Let -Δdenote the Dirichlet Laplace operator on a bounded open set in \mathbb{R}^d. We study the sum of the negative eigenvalues of the operator -h^2 Δ- 1 in the semiclassical limit h \to 0+. We give a new proof that yields not only the first term of the asymptotic formula but also the second term involving the surface area of the boundary of the set. The proof is valid under weak smoothness assumptions on the boundary.
We study spectral properties of Dirichlet Laplacian on the conical layer of the opening angle $π-2θ$ and thickness equal to $π$. We demonstrate that below the continuum threshold which is equal to one there is an infinite sequence of isolated eigenvalues and analyze properties of these geometrically induced bound states. By numerical computation we find examples of the eigenfunctions.
In this paper, we prove two new Weyl-type upper estimates for the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian. As a consequence, we obtain the following {\em lower} bounds for its counting function. For $\la\ge \la_1$, one has N(\la) > \dfrac{2}{n+2} \dfrac{1}{H_n} (\la-\la_1)^{n/2} \la_1^{-n/2}, and N(\la) > (\dfrac{n+2}{n+4})^{n/2} \dfrac{1}{H_n} (\la-(1+4/n) \la_1)^{n/2} \la_1^{-n/2}, where H_n=\dfrac{2 n}{j_{n/2-1,1}^2 J_{n/2}^2(j_{n/2-1,1})} is a constant which depends on $n$, the dimension of the underlying space, and Bessel functions and their zeros.
We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel curves in the plane, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the curves and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the curves tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the curvature radii of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is the biggest. We also show that the asymptotics can be obtained from a form of norm-resolvent con…
We study $L^p$ Besov critical exponents and isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities associated with fractional Laplacians on metric measure spaces. The main tool is the theory of heat semigroup based Besov classes in Dirichlet spaces that was introduced by the authors in previous works.
In this paper, we study eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $p$-Laplacians with Dirichlet boundary condition on graphs. We characterize the first eigenfunction (and the maximum eigenfunction for a bipartite graph) via the sign condition. By the uniqueness of the first eigenfunction of $p$-Laplacian, as $p\to 1,$ we identify the Cheeger constant of a symmetric graph with that of the quotient graph. By this approach, we calculate various Cheeger constants of spherically symmetric graphs.
The goal of this paper is to derive estimates of eigenvalue moments for Dirichlet Laplacians and Schrödinger operators in regions having infinite cusps which are geometrically nontrivial being either curved or twisted; we are going to show how those geometric properties enter the eigenvalue bounds. The obtained inequalities reflect the essentially one-dimensional character of the cusps and we give an example showing that in an intermediate energy region they can be much stronger than the usual semiclassical bounds.
We explicitly express the spectral determinant of Friederichs Dirichlet Laplacians on the 2-dimensional hyperbolic (Gaussian curvature -1) cones in terms of the cone angle and the geodesic radius of the boundary. The related results in the recent paper "Riemann-Roch isometries in the non-compact orbifold setting," J. Eur. Math. Soc. 22 (2020) by G. Freixas i Montplet and A. von Pippich turn out to be incorrect.
We study the Laplacian in deformed thin (bounded or unbounded) tubes in ?$\R^3$, i.e., tubular regions along a curve $r(s)$ whose cross sections are multiplied by an appropriate deformation function $h(s)> 0$. One the main requirements on $h(s)$ is that it has a single point of global maximum. We find the asymptotic behaviors of the eigenvalues and weakly effective operators as the diameters of the tubes tend to zero. It is shown that such behaviors are not influenced by some geometric features of the tube, such as curvature, torsion and twisting, and so a huge amount of different deformed tub…
We perform quantitative spectral analysis of the self-adjoint Dirichlet Laplacian $\mathsf{H}$ on an unbounded, radially symmetric (generalized) parabolic layer $\mathcal{P}\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. It was known before that $\mathsf{H}$ has an infinite number of eigenvalues below the threshold of its essential spectrum. In the present paper, we find the discrete spectrum asymptotics for $\mathsf{H}$ by means of a consecutive reduction to the analogous asymptotic problem for an effective one-dimensional Schrödinger operator on the half-line with the potential the behaviour of which far away from th…
We consider the Laplacian in a curved two-dimensional strip of constant width squeezed between two curves, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the curves and variable Robin boundary conditions on the other. We prove that, for certain types of Robin boundary conditions, the spectral threshold of the Laplacian is estimated from below by the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in a Dirichlet-Robin annulus determined by the geometry of the strip. Moreover, we show that an appropriate combination of the geometric setting and boundary conditions leads to a Hardy-type inequality in infi…
This paper is concerned with the location of nodal sets of eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet Laplacian in thin tubular neighbourhoods of hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. In the limit when the radius of the neighbourhood tends to zero, it is known that spectral properties of the Laplacian are approximated well by an effective Schrödinger operator on the hypersurface with a potential expressed solely in terms of principal curvatures. By applying techniques of elliptic partial differential equations, we strengthen the known perturbation results to get a convergence of ei…
Inequalities for the eigenvalues of the (negative) Laplacian subject to mixed boundary conditions on polyhedral and more general bounded domains are established. The eigenvalues subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on the remainder of the boundary are estimated in terms of either Dirichlet or Neumann eigenvalues. The results complement several classical inequalities between Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues due to Pólya, Payne, Levine and Weinberger, Friedlander, and others.
We study the survival probability of a particle diffusing in a two-dimensional domain, bounded by a smooth absorbing boundary. The short-time expansion of this quantity depends on the geometric characteristics of the boundary, whilst its long-time asymptotics is governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the domain. We present a simple algorithm for calculation of the short-time expansion for an arbitrary "star-shaped" domain. The coefficients are expressed in terms of powers of boundary curvature, integrated around the circumference of the domain. Based on this ex…
