Recent FERMI observations provide a lower limit of 10^{-15} G for the magnetic field strength in the intergalactic medium (IGM). This is consistent with theoretical expectations based on the Biermann battery effect, which predicts such IGM fields already at redshifts z~10. During gravitational collapse, such magnetic fields can be amplified by compression and by turbulence, giving rise to the small-scale dynamo. On scales below the Jeans length, the eddy turnover timescale is much shorter than the free-fall timescale, so that saturation can be reached during collapse. This scenario has been tested and confirmed with magneto-hydrodynamical simulations following the collapse of a turbulent, weakly magnetized cloud. Based on a spectral analysis, we confirm that turbulence is injected on the Jeans scale. For the power spectrum of the magnetic field, we obtain the Kazantsev slope which is characteristic for the small-scale dynamo. A calculation of the critical length scales for ambipolar diffusion and Ohmic dissipation shows that these scales are always small enough to allow significant amplification of the magnetic field by small-scale eddies. We discuss potential implications for the protostellar accretion disk, with particular focus on the magneto-rotational instability, which may change the morphology of the disk and reduce the accretion rate by a factor of a few.
We show that the recent NANOGrav result can be interpreted as a stochastic gravitational wave signal associated to formation of primordial black holes from high-amplitude curvature perturbations. The indicated amplitude and power of the gravitational wave spectrum agrees well with formation of primordial seeds for supermassive black holes.
Astrophysical models of primordial star formation require rate constants for three-body recombination as input. The current status of these rates for H2 due to collisions with H is far from satisfactory, with published rate constants showing orders of magnitude disagreement at the temperatures relevant for H2 formation in primordial gas. This letter presents an independent calculation of this recombination rate constant as a function of temperature. An analytic expression is provided for the rate constant which should be more reliable than ones currently being used in astrophysical models.
The evolution of primordial collapsing clouds and formation of proto-Population III stars are investigated using three-dimensional ideal MHD simulation. We calculated the evolution of magnetized primordial clouds from the prestellar stage until the epoch after the proto-Population III star formation, spatially resolving both parsec-scale clouds and sub-AU scale protostars. The formation process of proto-population III star is characterized by the ratio of rotational to magnetic energy of the parent cloud. When the rotational energy is larger than the magnetic energy, fragmentation occurs in th…
We calculate the contribution to the curvature perturbation, that is generated while the waterfall field grows exponentially (which can occur only if the waterfall field mass is $m\gg H$). We consider the upper bound on its spectrum coming from constraints on the abundance of primordial black holes, taking account of possible non-gaussianity. The constraint is satisfied, but extrapolation of our result to the regime $m\sim H$ suggests that the constraint might not be satisfied there.
We study the effect of the nonlinear relation between density and curvature perturbations on the formation of PBHs. By calculating the variance and skewness of the density perturbation we derive the non-Gaussian property. As a criterion for PBH formation, the compaction function is used and it is found that larger curvature perturbations are required due to the nonlinear effect. We estimate the PBH abundance based on the Press-Schechter formalism with non-Gaussian probability density function during Radiation dominated era. It is found that the nonlinear effect slightly suppresses the PBH form…
In the model where Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) form from large primordial curvature (C) perturbations, i.e., CPBHs, constraints on PBH abundance provide in principle constraints on the primordial curvature power spectrum. This connection however depends necessarily on the details of PBH formation mechanism. In this paper we provide, for the first time, constraints on the primordial curvature power spectrum from the latest limits on PBH abundance, taking into account all the steps from gravitational collapse in real space to PBH formation. In particular, we use results from numerical relativi…
We performed the detailed analysis of the primordial black hole (PBH) formation mechanism in an axionlike curvaton model with a coupling to inflaton. The phase direction of the complex scalar works as a curvaton and produces enough PBHs to explain the black hole binaries ($\sim 30 M_{\odot}$) observed in the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration or PBHs as dark matter (DM) ($\sim 10^{-12} M_{\odot}$). We examine whether our model satisfies the current constraints on the PBH mass spectrum, the curvature perturbation and the secondarily produced gravitational waves. We also take into account ambiguity about …
Primordial Black Holes could be an important component of the dark matter in the Universe. If they exist, they would add a Poisson component to the matter power spectrum. The extra power would speed up the emergence of dark matter halos that seed the formation of first stars and galaxies. Kashlinsky (2021) suggested that the additional velocity fluctuations would accelerate the infall of baryons onto the dark matter potential wells. We analyze the effect of Primordial Black Holes on the baryon infall from recombination to reionization and find the correction to be a few percent of the power su…
It has been recently claimed that primordial magnetic fields could relieve the cosmological Hubble tension. We consider the impact of such fields on the formation of the first cosmological objects, mini-halos forming stars, for present-day field strengths in the range of $2\times 10^{-12}$ - $2\times 10^{-10}$ G. These values correspond to initial ratios of Alvén velocity to the speed of sound of $v_a/c_s\approx 0.03 - 3$. We find that when $v_a/c_s\ll 1$, the effects are modest. However, when $v_a\sim c_s$, the starting time of the gravitational collapse is delayed and the duration extended a…
The formation of primordial black holes is studied using superconformal inflationary $α$-attractors. An inflaton potential is constructed with a plateau-like region which brings about the onset of an ultra slow-roll region where the required enhancement in the curvature power spectrum takes place. This is accomplished by carefully fine-tuning the parameters in the potential. For the parameter sets, the amount of observable inflation is such that the curvature perturbation $\mathcal{P}_{\mathcal{R}}$ peaks at $\sim 10^{14}\text{Mpc}^{-1}$, producing PBHs in the mass window $10^{16}\text{g}\leq …
In this paper, the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) is reinvestigated using inflationary $α$-attractors. Instead of using the conventional Press-Schechter theory to compute the abundance, the optimized peaks theory is used, which was developed in Ref. \cite{Yoo:2018kvb,Yoo:2020dkz}. This method takes into account how curvature perturbations play a rôle in modifying the mass of primordial black holes. Analyzing the model proposed in \cite{Mahbub:2019uhl} it is seen that the horizon mass of the collapsed Hubble patch is larger by $\mathcal{O}(10)$ compared to the usual computation. Mor…
A broad range of single field models of inflation are analyzed in light of all relevant recent cosmological data, checking whether they can lead to the formation of long--lived Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) as candidate for dark matter. To that end we calculate the spectral index of the power spectrum of primordial perturbations as well as its first and second derivatives. PBH formation is possible only if the spectral index $n_S(k_0)$ increases significantly at small scales. Since current data indicate that the first derivative $α_S$ of the spectral index is negative at the pivot scale, PBH f…
We reinvestigate gravitational ellipsoidal collapse with special focus on its impact on primordial black-hole formation. For a generic model we demonstrate that the abundance and energy density of the produced primordial black holes will be significantly decreased when the non-sphericity of the overdensities is taken into account.
Recent spacecraft observations exploring solar system properties impact standard paradigms of the formation of stars, planets and comets. We stress the unexpected cloud of microscopic dust resulting from the DEEP IMPACT mission, and the existence of molten nodules in STARDUST samples. And the theory of star formation does not explain the common occurrence of binary and multiple star systems in the standard gas fragmentation scenario. No current theory of planet formation can explain the iron core of the earth, under oceans of water. These difficulties are avoided in a scenario where the planet…
Thanks to the rapid progress in precision cosmology in the last few years, we now have access to physical observables that may constrain the theory of inflation through the non-Gaussianity (NG) signatures in the cosmic microwave background radiation and the distribution of large-scale structure. Numerical modeling of the NG signals from different inflation models is essential to correctly interpret current and near future data from large-scale structure surveys. In this study, we use high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the effects of primordial NG on the form…
The transformation of atomic hydrogen to molecular hydrogen through three-body reactions is a crucial stage in the collapse of primordial, metal-free halos, where the first generation of stars (Population III stars) in the Universe are formed. However, in the published literature, the rate coefficient for this reaction is uncertain by nearly an order of magnitude. We report on the results of both adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of the collapse of metal-free halos as a function of the value of this rate coefficient. For each simulation method…
In the present work, we discuss the effects of the inclusion of sterile-active neutrino oscillations during the production of primordial light-nuclei. We assume that the sterile neutrino mass-eigenstate might oscillate with the two lightest active neutrino mass- eigenstates, with mixing angles $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$. We also allow a constant renormalization (represented by a parameter ($ζ$)) of the sterile neutrino occupation factor. Taking $ζ$ and the mixing angles as free parameters, we have computed distribution functions of active and sterile neutrinos and primordial abundances. Using observable …
The effect of large quantum fluctuations on primordial black-hole formation during an inflationary phase along a plateau is investigated. By using techniques of stochastic inflation in combination with replica field theory and the Feynman-Jensen variational method, it is non-perturbatively demonstrated that the abundance of primordial black holes is amplified by several orders of magnitude as compared to the classical computation.
Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) can form in the radiation dominated early Universe from the collapse of large density perturbations produced by inflation. A power-law parameterisation of the primordial power spectrum is often used to extrapolate from cosmological scales, where the amplitude of the perturbations is well-measured by Cosmic Microwave Background and Large Scale Structure observations, down to the small scales on which PBHs may form. We show that this typically leads to large errors in the amplitude of the fluctuations on small scales, and hence extremely inaccurate calculations of t…
We perform (3+1)-dimensional simulations of primordial black hole (PBH) formation starting from the spheroidal super-horizon perturbations. We investigate how the ellipticity (prolateness or oblateness) affects the threshold of PBH formation in terms of the peak amplitude of curvature perturbation. We find that, in the case of the radiation-dominated universe, the effect of ellipticity on the threshold is negligibly small for the large amplitude of perturbations expected for PBH formation.
We present a comprehensive formalism for the description of primordial black hole formation in spherical symmetry based on the formalisms of Misner, Sharp, and Hernandez, which can be used to predict whether or not a black hole will form, and extract the resulting black hole mass when formation does occur. Rigorous derivations of all aspects of the formalism are provided, including a thorough investigation of appropriate initial and boundary conditions. We connect our formalism with numerous other approaches in the literature. Some implementation details for numerical code are provided. We inc…
Within the framework that primordial black holes are formed by the direct gravitational collapse of large primordial density perturbations in the radiation dominated stage, we derive the threshold of the density contrast for the formation of rotating primordial black holes based on the simple Jeans criterion. It is found that the threshold value increases in proportion to the square of the angular momentum. We then apply the recently refined analysis on the formation threshold for non-rotating black holes to the case of rotating black holes, and contrast the derived threshold with the former. …
We argue that the existence of the cold dark matter is explained by primordial black holes. We show that a significant number of primordial black holes can be formed in an axion-like curvaton model, in which the highly blue-tilted power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations is achieved. It is found that the produced black holes with masses $\sim 10^{20} -10^{38} \mathrm{g}$ account for the present cold dark matter. We also argue the possibility of forming the primordial black holes with mass $\sim 10^5 M_{\odot}$ as seeds of the supermassive black holes.
The formation of primordial black holes in the early universe in the Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor theory of gravity is investigated. Corrections to the threshold value of density perturbations are found. Above the threshold, the gravitational collapse occurs after the cosmological horizon crossing. The corrections depend in a certain way on the evolving scalar field. They affect the probability of primordial black holes formation, and can lead to their clustering at large scales if the scalar field is inhomogeneous. The formation of the clusters, in turn, increases the probability of black holes …
In response to a recent criticism, appeared in arXiv:2303.00341, we argue that the standard scenario to form primordial black holes in the early universe based on a phase of ultra-slow-roll in single-field inflation is not ruled out.
We adapted the Appleby-Battye-Starobinsky model of $F(R)$ gravity towards describing double cosmological inflation and formation of primordial black holes with masses up to $10^{19}$ g in the single-field model. We found that it is possible to get an enhancement of the power spectrum of scalar curvature perturbations to the level beyond the Hawking (black hole evaporation) limit of $10^{15}$ g, so that the primordial black holes resulting from gravitational collapse of those large primordial perturbations can survive in the present universe and form part of cold dark matter. Our results agree …
Magnetic fields play a vital role in numerous astrophysical processes such as star formation and the interstellar medium. In particular, their role in the formation and evolution of galaxies is not well understood. This paper presents high-resolution magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations performed with GIZMO to investigate the effect of magnetic fields on primordial galaxy formation. Physical processes such as relevant gas physics (e.g., gas cooling and gas chemistry), star formation, stellar and supernova feedback, and chemical enrichment were considered in the simulations. The simulation res…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are an important tool in cosmology to probe the primordial spectrum of small-scale curvature perturbations that reenter the cosmological horizon during radiation domination epoch. We numerically solve the evolution of spherically symmetric highly perturbed configurations to clarify the criteria of PBHs formation using an extremely wide class of curvature profiles characterized by five parameters, (in contrast to only two parameters used in all previous papers) which specify the curvature profiles not only at the central region but also at the outer boundary of con…
The large enhancement of the primordial power spectrum of the curvature perturbation can seed the formation of primordial black hole, that can play as a dark matter component in the Universe. In multi-filed inflation models, the curved trajectory of the scalar fields in the field space can generate a peak in the power spectrum on small scales due to the existence of the isocurvature perturbation. Here we show that a potential can be reconstructed from a given power spectrum, which is made of a scale-invariant one on large scales and the other function with a peak on small scales. In multi-fiel…
We consider the process of primordial black hole (PBH) formation originated from primordial curvature perturbations produced during waterfall transition (with tachyonic instability), at the end of hybrid inflation. It is known that in such inflation models, rather large values of curvature perturbation amplitudes can be reached, which can potentially cause a significant PBH production in the early Universe. The probability distributions of density perturbation amplitudes in this case can be strongly non-Gaussian, which requires a special treatment. We calculated PBH abundances and PBH mass spe…
We present a parametrized study of the effects of free thermal neutron injection on primordial nucleosynthesis, where both the rate and the time scale of injection are varied. This generic approach is found to yield a successful solution for reducing the 7Li abundance without causing significant problems to other elemental abundances. Our analysis demonstrates that hadronic injection, possibly due to decays or annihilations of dark matter particles with a mass of about 1 to 30 GeV, provides a possible solution to an outstanding problem in the standard Big Bang model.
The observations and evolution of clumpy, high-redshift galaxies are reviewed. Models suggest that the clumps form by gravitational instabilities in a gas-rich disk, interact with each other gravitationally, and then merge in the center where they form a bulge. The model requires smooth gas accretion during galaxy growth.
The elegance of inflationary cosmology and cosmological perturbation theory ends with the formation of the first stars and galaxies, the initial sources of light that launched the phenomenologically rich process of cosmic reionization. Here we review the current understanding of early star formation, emphasizing unsolved problems and technical challenges. We begin with the first generation of stars to form after the Big Bang and trace how they influenced subsequent star formation. The onset of chemical enrichment coincided with a sharp increase in the overall physical complexity of star formin…
A standard scenario to form primordial black holes in the early universe is based on a phase of ultra-slow-roll in single-field inflation when the amplitude of the short scale modes is enhanced compared to the CMB plateau. Based on general arguments, we show that the loop corrections to the large-scale linear power spectrum from the short modes are small and conclude that the scenario is not ruled out.

We study the generation of the primordial curvature perturbation in multi-field inflation. Considering both the evolution of the perturbation during inflation and the effects generated at the end of inflation, we present a general formula for the curvature perturbation. We provide the analytic expressions of the power spectrum, spectral tilt and non-Gaussianity for the separable potentials of two inflaton scalars, and apply them to some specific models.
A broad range of single field models of inflation are analyzed in light of all relevant recent cosmological data, checking whether they can lead to the formation of long-lived Primordial Black Holes (PBHs). To that end we calculate the spectral index of the power spectrum of primordial perturbations as well as its first and second derivatives. PBH formation is possible only if the spectral index increases significantly at small scales, i.e. large wave number $k$. The presence of primordial magnetic fields increases the minimum halo mass in which star formation is possible at high redshifts. Estimates of the dynamical mass of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) within their half-light radius constrain their virialized halo mass before their infall into the Milky Way. The inferred halo mass and formation redshift of the UFDs place upper bounds on the primordial comoving magnetic field, $B_0$. We derive an upper limit of $0.50\pm 0.086$ ($0.31\pm 0.04$) nG on $B_0~$ assuming the average formation redshift of the UFD host halos is $z_{\rm form}=$ 10 (20), re…
We argue that primordial black-hole formation must be described by means of extreme-value theory. This is a consequence of the large values of the energy density required to initiate the collapse of black holes in the early Universe and the finite duration of their collapse. Compared to the Gaussian description of the most extreme primordial density fluctuations, the holes' mass function is narrower and peaks towards larger masses. Secondly, thanks to the shallower fall-off of extreme-value distributions, the predicted abundance of primordial black holes is boosted by $10^{7}$ orders of magnit…
We re-analyse current single-field inflationary models related to primordial black holes formation. We do so by taking into account recent developments on the estimations of their abundances and the influence of non-gaussianities. We show that, for all of them, the gaussian approximation, which is typically used to estimate the primordial black holes abundances, fails. However, in the case in which the inflaton potential has an inflection point, the contribution of non-gaussianities is only perturbative. Finally, we infer that only models featuring an inflection point in the inflationary poten…
We calculate the exact formation probability of primordial black holes generated during the collapse at horizon re-entry of large fluctuations produced during inflation, such as those ascribed to a period of ultra-slow-roll. We show that it interpolates between a Gaussian at small values of the average density contrast and a Cauchy probability distribution at large values. The corresponding abundance of primordial black holes may be larger than the Gaussian one by several orders of magnitude. The mass function is also shifted towards larger masses.
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are a useful tool in cosmology to probe primordial inhomogeneities on small scales that reenter the Hubble radius during the radiation dominated epoch. In this paper, a phenomenon we call the double formation of PBHs, described below, is explored. Suppose there exists a highly perturbed region which will collapse to form a PBH after the horizon crossing of this region, and farther that this region is superposed on much larger region, which also collapses upon reentry. One then expects the collapse of the central smaller region at the time of the crossing of this r…
We study the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) observed in the galactic centers. Although the origin of SMBHs has not been well understood yet, previous studies suggest that seed black holes (BHs) with masses $10^{4-5}M_\odot$ exist at a high redshift ($z \sim 10$). We examine whether primordial black holes (PBHs) produced by inhomogeneous baryogenesis can explain those seed black holes. The inhomogeneous baryogenesis is realized in the modified Affleck-Dine mechanism. In this scenario, there is no stringent constraint from CMB $μ$-distortion in contrast to the scenario where Gaussian fluctuati…
In the context of transient constant-roll inflation near a local maximum, we derive the non-perturbative field redefinition that relates a Gaussian random field with the true non-Gaussian curvature perturbation. Our analysis shows the emergence of a new critical amplitude $ζ_*$, corresponding to perturbations that prevent the inflaton from overshooting the local maximum, thus becoming trapped in the false minimum of the potential. For potentials with a mild curvature at the local maximum (and thus small non-Gaussianity), we recover the known perturbative field redefinition. We apply these resu…
We extend the Cecotti-Kallosh model of Starobinsky inflation in supergravity by adding a holomorphic function to the superpotential in order to generate a large peak in the power spectrum of scalar (curvature) perturbations. In our approach, the singular non-canonical kinetic terms are largely responsible for inflation (as an attractor solution), whereas the superpotential is engineered to generate a production of primordial black holes. We study the cases with (i) a linear holomorphic function, (ii) a quadratic holomorphic function, and (iii) an exponential holomorphic function, as regards th…
