Using extensions of the Newman-Penrose and Geroch-Held-Penrose formalisms to five dimensions, we invariantly classify all Petrov type $D$ vacuum solutions for which the Riemann tensor is isotropic in a plane orthogonal to a pair of Weyl alligned null directions

For Petrov D vacuum spaces, two simple identities are rederived and some new identities are obtained, in a manageable form, by a systematic and transparent analysis using the GHP formalism. This gives a complete involutive set of tables for the four GHP derivatives on each of the four GHP spin coefficients and the one Weyl tensor component. It follows directly from these results that the theoretical upper bound on the order of covariant differentiation of the Riemann tensor required for a Karlhede classification of these spaces is reduced to two.
We point out that the Myers-Perry metric in five dimensions is algebraically special. It has Petrov type \underline{22}, which is the Petrov type of the five-dimensional Schwarzschild metric.
Silent universes are studied using a ``3+1'' decomposition of the field equations in order to make progress in proving a recent conjecture that the only silent universes of Petrov type I are spatially homogeneous Bianchi I models. The infinite set of constraints are written in a geometrically clear form as an infinite set of Codacci tensors on the initial hypersurface. In particular, we show that the initial data set for silent universes is ``non-contorted'' and therefore (Beig and Szabados, 1997) isometrically embeddable in a conformally flat spacetime. We prove, by making use of algebraic co…
It is well-known that the Kerr-metric (rotating black hole in four dimensions) has Petrov type D. We prove a similar property in five dimensions. The Myers-Perry metric (rotating black hole in five dimensions) with one non-zero angular momentum has Petrov type \underline{22}. Conversely, we show that the Myers-Perry solution is unique within a certain restricted class of metrics of Petrov type \underline{22}.
Recently the Petrov type I condition is introduced to reduce the degrees of freedom in the extrinsic curvature of a timelike hypersurface to the degrees of freedom in the dual Rindler fluid in Einstein gravity. In this paper we show that the Petrov type I condition holds for the solutions of vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity up to the second order in the relativistic hydrodynamic expansion. On the other hand, if imposing the Petrov type I condition and Hamiltonian constraint on a finite cutoff hypersurface, the stress tensor of the relativistic Rindler fluid in vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet …
We classify all five-dimensional Einstein manifolds that are static, have an SO(3) isometry group and have Petrov type 22. We use this classification to show that the localized black hole in the Randall-Sundrum scenario necessarily has Petrov type 4.
The second order perturbative field equations for slowly and rigidly rotating perfect fluid balls of Petrov type D are solved numerically. It is found that all the slowly and rigidly rotating perfect fluid balls up to second order, irrespective of Petrov type, may be matched to a possibly non-asymptotically flat stationary axisymmetric vacuum exterior. The Petrov type D interior solutions are characterized by five integration constants, corresponding to density and pressure of the zeroth order configuration, the magnitude of the vorticity, one more second order constant and an independent sphe…

We show that Petrov type I vacuum solutions admitting a Killing vector whose Papapetrou field is aligned with a principal bivector of the Weyl tensor are the Kasner and Taub metrics, their counterpart with timelike orbits and their associated windmill-like solutions, as well as the Petrov homogeneous vacuum solution. We recover all these metrics by using an integration method based on an invariant classification which allows us to characterize every solution. In this way we obtain an intrinsic and explicit algorithm to identify them.
The class of Petrov type I curvature tensors is further divided into those for which the span of the set of distinct principal null directions has dimension four (maximally spanning type I) or dimension three (nonmaximally spanning type I). Explicit examples are provided for both vacuum and nonvacuum spacetimes.
We discuss Petrov type D Einstein-Maxwell fields in which both double null eigenvectors of the Weyl tensor are non-aligned with the eigenvectors of a non-null electromagnetic field and are assumed to be geodesic, shear-free, diverging and non-twisting. We obtain the general solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations under the extra condition that the complex null vectors of the Weyl canonical tetrad are hypersurface orthogonal. The corresponding space-times are all conformally related to a Killing-Yano space and are described by a 5-parameter family of metrics, admitting two commuting Killing …
Recently Lysov and Strominger [arXiv:1104.5502] showed that imposing Petrov type I condition on a $(p+1)$-dimensional timelike hypersurface embedded in a $(p+2)$-dimensional vacuum Einstein gravity reduces the degrees of freedom in the extrinsic curvature of the hypersurface to that of a fluid on the hypersurface, and that the leading-order Einstein constraint equations in terms of the mean curvature of the embedding give the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations of the dual fluid. In this paper we show that the non-relativistic fluid dual to vacuum Einstein gravity does not satisfy the Petro…
We show that the BMPV metric has Petrov type 22. This means that the BMPV metric is less algebraically special than the five-dimensional Schwarzschild metric, which has Petrov type \underline{22}.
The Petrov type I condition for the solutions of vacuum Einstein equations in both of the non-relativistic and relativistic hydrodynamic expansions is checked. We show that it holds up to the third order of the non-relativistic hydrodynamic expansion parameter, but it is violated at the fourth order even if we choose a general frame. On the other hand, it is found that the condition holds at least up to the second order of the derivative expansion parameter. Turn the logic around, through imposing the Petrov type I condition and Hamiltonian constraint on a finite cutoff surface, we show that t…
Since all Einstein spacetimes are vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity in four dimensions, in this paper we study various aspects of non-Einstein vacuum solutions to this theory. Most such known solutions are of traceless Ricci and Petrov type N with a constant Ricci scalar. Thus we assume the Ricci scalar to be constant which leads to a substantial simplification of the field equations. We prove that a vacuum solution to quadratic gravity with traceless Ricci tensor of type N and aligned Weyl tensor of any Petrov type is necessarily a Kundt spacetime. This will considerably simplify the sear…
Einstein spacetimes (that is vacuum spacetimes possibly with a non-zero cosmological constant Λ) with constant non-zero Weyl eigenvalus are considered. For type Petrov II & D this assumption allows one to prove that the non-repeated eigenvalue necessarily has the value 2Λ/3 and it turns out that the only possible spacetimes are some Kundt-waves considered by Lewandowski which are type II and a Robinson-Bertotti solution of type D. For Petrov type I the only solution turns out to be a homogeneous pure vacuum solution found long ago by Petrov using group theoretic methods. These results can be s…
We show that a spacetime satisfying the linearized vacuum Einstein equations around a type D background is generically of type I, and that the splittings of the Principal Null Directions (PNDs) and of the degenerate eigenvalue of the Weyl tensor are non analytic functions of the perturbation parameter of the metric. This provides a gauge invariant characterization of the effect of the perturbation on the underlying geometry, without appealing to differential curvature invariants. This is of particular interest for the Schwarzschild solution, for which there are no signatures of the even pertur…
We generalize the result of Lukacs {\it et al.} on asymptotic stability of the Schwarzschild metric with respect to perturbations in the Robinson-Trautman class of metrics to the case of Petrov type II twisting metrics, uder the condition of asymptotic flatness at future null infinity. The Bondi energy is used as the Lyapunov functional and we prove that the "final state" of such metrics is the Kerr metric.
We consider $3$-dimensional isolated horizons (IHs) generated by null curves that form nontrivial $U(1)$ bundles. We find a natural interplay between the IH geometry and the $U(1)$-bundle geometry. In this context we consider the Petrov type D equation introduced and studied in previous works \cite{DLP1,DLP2,LS,DKLS1}. From the $4$-dimensional spacetime point of view, solutions to that equation define isolated horizons embeddable in vacuum spacetimes (with cosmological constant) as Killing horizons to the second order such that the spacetime Weyl tensor at the horizon is of the Petrov type D. …
HH-spaces, i.e., complex spacetimes, of Petrov type NxN are determined by a trio of pde's for two functions, lambda and a, of three independent variables (and also two gauge functions, chosen to be two of the independent variables if one prefers). As in common integrable systems, these form a second order, linear system for lambda; howver, here the integrability conditions, involving a, are more complicated than is common. Therefore, with the hope of finding new solutions, these equations are now constrained to also admit both one and two homothetic or Killing vectors. The case with one Killin…
We present an axially symmetric, asymptotically flat empty space solution of the Einstein field equations containing a naked singularity. The spacetime is regular everywhere except on the symmetry axis where it possess a true curvature singularity. The spacetime is of type D in the Petrov classification scheme and is locally isometric to the metrics of case IV in the Kinnersley classification of type D vacuum metrics. Additionally, the spacetime also shows the evolution of closed timelike curves (CTCs) from an initial hypersurface free from CTCs.
The Petrov type D equation imposed on the 2-metric tensor and the rotation scalar of a cross-section of an isolated horizon can be used to uniquely distinguish the Kerr - (anti) de Sitter spacetime in the case the topology of the cross-section is that of a sphere. In the current paper we study that equation on closed 2-dimensional surfaces that have genus $>0$. We derive all the solutions assuming the embeddability in 4-dimensional spacetime that satisfies the vacuum Einstein equations with (possibly 0) cosmological constant. We prove all of them have constant Gauss curvature and zero rotation…
The radiation gauges used by Chrzanowski (his IRG/ORG) for metric reconstruction in the Kerr spacetime seem to be over-specified. Their specification consists of five conditions: four, which we treat here as valid gauge conditions, plus an additional condition on the trace of the metric perturbation. In this work, we utilize a newly developed form of the perturbed Einstein equations to establish a condition -- on a particular tetrad component of the stress-energy tensor -- under which the full IRG/ORG can be imposed. Using gauge freedom, we are able to impose the full IRG for Petrov type II an…
All non-twisting Petrov-type N solutions of vacuum Einstein field equations with cosmological constant Lambda are summarized. They are shown to belong either to the non-expanding Kundt class or to the expanding Robinson-Trautman class. Invariant subclasses of each class are defined and the corresponding metrics are given explicitly in suitable canonical coordinates. Relations between the subclasses and their geometrical properties are analyzed. In the subsequent paper these solutions are interpreted as exact gravitational waves propagating in de Sitter or anti-de Sitter spacetimes.
A coordinate-free approach to limits of spacetimes is developed. The limits of the Schwarzschild metric as the mass parameter tends to 0 or $\infty$ are studied, extending previous results. Besides the known Petrov type D and 0 limits, three vacuum plane-wave solutions of Petrov type N are found to be limits of the Schwarzschild spacetime.
Generic black holes in vacuum-de Sitter / Anti-de Sitter spacetimes are studied in quasi-local framework, where the relevant properties are captured in the intrinsic geometry of the null surface (the horizon). Imposing the quasi-local notion of stationarity (null symmetry of the metric up to second order at the horizon only) we perform the complete classification of all the so called special Petrov types of these surfaces defined by the properties (structure of principal null direction) of the Weyl tensor at the surface. The only possible types are: II, D and O. In particular all the geometrie…
In vacuum space-times the exterior derivative of a Killing vector field is a 2-form (named here as the Papapetrou field) that satisfies Maxwell's equations without electromagnetic sources. In this paper, using the algebraic structure of the Papapetrou field, we will set up a new formalism for the study of vacuum space-times with an isometry, which is suitable to investigate the connections between the isometry and the Petrov type of the space-time. This approach has some advantages, among them, it leads to a new classification of these space-times and the integrability conditions provide expre…
We give a Petrov classification for five-dimensional metrics. We classify Ricci-flat metrics that are static, have an SO(3) isometry group and have Petrov type 22. We use this classification to look for the metric of a black hole on a cylinder, i.e. a black hole with asymptotic geometry four-dimensional Minkowski space times a circle. Although a black string wrapped around the circle and the five-dimensional black hole are both algebraically special, it turns out that the black hole on a cylinder is not.
We present a topologically trivial, non-vacuum solution of the Einstein's field equations in four-dimensions, which is regular everywhere. The metric admits circular closed timelike curves, which appear beyond the null curve, and these timelike curves are linearly stable under linear perturbations. Additionally, the spacetime admits null geodesics curve which are not closed, and the metric is of type D in the Petrov classification scheme. The stress-energy tensor anisotropic fluid satisfy the different energy conditions and a generalization of Equation-of-State parameter of perfect fluid $p=ω\…
We reexamine Petrov type D gravitational fields generated by a perfect fluid with spatially homogeneous energy density and in which the flow lines form a timelike non-shearing and non-rotating congruence. It is shown that the anisotropic such spacetimes, which comprise the vacuum C-metric as a limit case, can have \emph{non-zero} expansion, contrary to the conclusion in the original investigation by Barnes (Gen. Rel. Grav. 4, 105 (1973)). This class consists of cosmological models with generically one and at most two Killing vectors. We construct their line element and discuss some important p…
A vacuum type D initial data set is a vacuum initial data set of the Einstein field equations whose data development contains a region where the space-time is of Petrov type D. In this paper we give a {\em systematic} characterisation of a vacuum type D initial data set. By systematic we mean that the only quantities involved are those appearing in the vacuum constraints, namely the first fundamental form (Riemannian metric) and the second fundamental form. Our characterisation is a set of conditions consisting of the vacuum constraints and some additional differential equations for the first …
The consistency of the constraint with the evolution equations for spatially inhomogeneous and irrotational silent (SIIS) models of Petrov type I, demands that the former are preserved along the timelike congruence represented by the velocity of the dust fluid, leading to \emph{new} non-trivial constraints. This fact has been used to conjecture that the resulting models correspond to the spatially homogeneous (SH) models of Bianchi type I, at least for the case where the cosmological constant vanish. By exploiting the full set of the constraint equations as expressed in the 1+3 covariant forma…
We investigate, in the context of five-dimensional (5D) Brans-Dicke theory of gravity, the idea that macroscopic matter configurations can be generated from pure vacuum in five dimensions, an approach first proposed in the framework of general relativity. We show that the 5D Brans-Dicke vacuum equations when reduced to four dimensions lead to a modified version of Brans-Dicke theory in four dimensions (4D). As an application of the formalism, we obtain two five-dimensional extensions of four-dimensional O'Hanlon and Tupper vacuum solution and show that they lead two different cosmological scen…
Since the 5D canonical metric embeds all 4D vacuum solutions of Einstein's equations, I review its application to the cosmological 'constant', quantized particles, deBroglie waves, scalar fields and wave-particle duality. There are several ways to ra-tionalize these things using an extra dimension. A possible explanation of wave-particle duality is that an observed particle manifests two isometries of flat 5D space in different 4D ways, one with waves and one without.
A Lorentz-invariant cosmological model is constructed within the framework of five-dimensional gravity. The five-dimensional theorem which is analogical to the generalized Birkhoff theorem is proved, that corresponds to the Kaluza's ``cylinder condition''. The five-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations have an integral of motion corresponding to this symmetry, the integral of motion is similar to the mass function in general relativity (GR). Space closure with respect to the extra dimensionality follows from the requirement of the absence of a conical singularity. Thus, the Kaluza-Klein (KK) m…
In this paper we introduce an algorithm to determine the equivalence of five dimensional spacetimes, which generalizes the Karlhede algorithm for four dimensional general relativity. As an alternative to the Petrov type classification, we employ the alignment classification to algebraically classify the Weyl tensor. To illustrate the algorithm we discuss three examples: the singly rotating Myers-Perry solution, the Kerr (anti) de Sitter solution, and the rotating black ring solution. We briefly discuss some applications of the Cartan algorithm in five dimensions.
A new five dimensional spherical vacuum solution is both dervied and its signature, curvature and truncation discussed. Its truncation leads to a four dimensional spacetime with similiar stress to those found by charge-free Kaluza-Klein compactification. Various other restrictions to four dimensions are looked at to see if they have stresses consisting of electromagnetic fields or quadratic tensors. The solution is extended to the brane picture where the extended space is found to obey field equations with metric stress derivable from a lagrangian dependent on brane function and kaluza scalar.
Optical (or Robinson) structures are one generalisation of four-dimensional shearfree congruences of null geodesics to higher dimensions. They are Lorentzian analogues of complex and CR structures. In this context, we extend the Goldberg-Sachs theorem to five dimensions. To be precise, we find a new algebraic condition on the Weyl tensor, which generalises the Petrov type II condition, in the sense that it ensures the existence of such congruences on a five-dimensional spacetime, vacuum or under weaker assumptions on the Ricci tensor. This results in a significant simplification of the field e…
Introducing a variable cosmological function $Λ(t)$ in a geometrical manner from a 5D Riemann-flat metric, we investigate the possibility of having a geometrical criterion to choose a suitable cosmological function $Λ(t)$ for every 4D dynamical hypersurface capable of generate phantom cosmologies.
Based on the CR formalism of algebraically special spacetimes by Hill, Lewandowski and Nurowski, we derive a nonlinear system of two real ODEs, of which the general solution determines a twisting type II (or more special) vacuum spacetime with two Killing vectors (commuting or not) and at most seven real parameters in addition to the cosmological constant Lambda. To demonstrate a broad range of interesting spacetimes that these ODEs can capture, special solutions of various Petrov types are presented and described as they appear in this approach. They include Kerr-NUT, Kerr and Debney/Demiańsk…
In the framework of the induced matter theory of gravity, we derive a 5D solution of the field equations that can describe a 4D cosmological scenario where the dark fluid (dark matter plus dark energy) equation of state has a geometrical origin. There is no a natural separation of the dark sector into different components, and then the model may provide a geometrical explanation for the existence of a dark degeneracy in cosmological scenarios.
Using numerical algebra tools, new classes of monopole solutions are obtained to the static, spherically-symmetric vacuum field equations of five-dimensional general relativity. First proposed by Kaluza, 5D general relativity unites gravity and classical electromagnetism with a scalar field. These monopoles correspond to bodies carrying mass, electric charge, and scalar charge. The Reissner-Nordström limit allows us to constrain the signature of the fifth component to be spacelike, but valid solutions are obtained for either sign of the scalar field. We find that Kaluza vacuum solutions imply …
In a particular variant of Kaluza-Klein theory, the so-called induced-matter theory (IMT), it is shown that any configuration of matter may be geometrically induced from a five-dimensional vacuum space. By using a similar approach we show that any distribution of charges and currents may also be induced from a five-dimensional vacuum space. Whereas in the case of IMT the geometry is Riemannian and the fundamental equations are the five-dimensional Einstein equations in vacuum, here we consider a Minkowskian geometry and the five-dimensional Maxwell equations in vacuum.
We investigate the possibility to recover a four-dimensional (4D) general theory of relativity, as embedded in a 5D spacetime where gravity is governed by a five-dimensional (5D) Brans-Dicke (BD) theory of gravity. Employing the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations and some ideas of the induced matter theory, we obtain that when the 5D BD scalar field is only depending of the extra coordinate, it is possible to recover on every generic 4D hypersurface the usual Einstein field equations plus a cosmological constant term, with matter sources described by the energy-momentum tensor of induced matter and…
In this paper we prove the non-linear asymptotic stability of the five-dimensional Schwarzschild metric under biaxial vacuum perturbations. This is the statement that the evolution of (SU(2) x U(1))-symmetric vacuum perturbations of initial data for the five-dimensional Schwarzschild metric finally converges in a suitable sense to a member of the Schwarzschild family. It constitutes the first result proving the existence of non-stationary vacuum black holes arising from asymptotically flat initial data dynamically approaching a stationary solution. In fact, we show quantitative rates of approa…
We consider the cosmology of a 3-brane universe, in a five dimensional space time (Bulk). We present some solutions to the five-dimensional Einstein equation, where a perfect fluid is confined to the 3-brane. We investigate the evolution of brane for two models of bulk. We choose ordinary and modified polytropic gas in brane and it is seen that these models have some new features.
We consider the 4+1 Einstein's field equations (EFE's) in vacuum, simplified by the assumption that there is a four-dimensional sub-manifold on which an isometry group of dimension four acts simply transitive. In particular we consider the Abelian group Type 4A1; and thus the emerging homogeneous sub-space is flat. Through the use of coordinate transformations that preserve the sub-manifold's manifest homogeneity, a coordinate system is chosen in which the shift vector is zero. The resulting equations remain form invariant under the action of the constant Automorphisms group. This group is use…
I study fresh inflation from a five-dimensional vacuum state, where the fifth dimension is constant. In this framework, the universe can be seen as inflating in a four-dimensional FRW metric embedding in a five-dimensional metric. Finally, the experimental data $n_s=1$ are consistent with $(p+ρ_t)/ρ_t \simeq1/3$ in the fresh inflationary scenario.
We present a new five-parameter class of Ricci-flat solutions in four dimensions with Euclidean signature. The solution is asymptotically locally flat (ALF), and contains a finite asymptotic NUT charge. When this charge is sent to infinity, the solution becomes asymptotically locally Euclidean (ALE), and one in fact obtains the Ricci-flat Plebanski-Demianski solution. The solution we have found can thus be regarded as an ALF generalisation of the latter solution. We also show that it can be interpreted as a system consisting of two touching Kerr-NUTs: the south pole of one Kerr-NUT touches the…
New axisymmetric stationary solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in five-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes are obtained by using solitonic solution-generating techniques. The new solutions are shown to be equivalent to the four-dimensional multi-solitonic solutions derived from particular class of four-dimensional Weyl solutions and to include different black rings from those obtained by Emparan and Reall.
We investigate five-dimensional vacuum solutions which represent rotating multi-black holes in asymptotically Kaluza-Klein spacetimes. We show that multi-black holes rotate maximally along extra dimension, and stationary configurations in vacuum are achieved by the balance of the gravitational attraction force and repulsive force caused by the rotations of black holes. We also show that each black hole can have the different topology of the lens space in addition to the spherical topology, and mass of black holes are quantized by the size of extra dimension and horizon topology.
