Observations of the QSO HE 0153-4520 (z-em = 0.450) with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) from 1134 to 1796 A with a resolution of ~17 km/s and signal-to- noise per resolution element of 20 to 40 are used to study a multi-phase partial Lyman limit system (LLS) at z = 0.22601 tracing both cool and hot gas. FUSE observations of the Lyman limit break yield log N(H I) = 16.61(0.12, -0.17) The observed UV absorption lines of H I 1216 to 926, C III, C II, N III, N II, Si III, and Si II imply the existence of cool photoionized gas in the LLS with log U = -2.8\pm0.1 and log N(H) = 19.35\pm0.18, log n(H) = -2.9\pm0.2, log T = 4.27\pm0.02, log (P/k) = 1.75\pm0.17, and log L(kpc) = 0.70\pm0.25. The abundances are [X/H] = -0.8 (+0.3, -0.2) for N, Si and C but the result is sensitive to the assumed shape of the ionizing background radiation field. The multi-phase system has strong O VI and associated broad Ly α absorption (BLA) with log N(O VI) = 14.21\pm0.02, b(O VI) = 37\pm1 km/s, log N(H I) = 13.70(+0.05,-0.08), b(H I)=140 (+14, -16) km/s and b(H I)/b(O VI) = 3.9\pm0.4. The O VI does not arise in the cool photoionized gas of the LLS. The O VI and BLA imply the direct detection of thermally broadened absorption by hot gas with log T = 6.07 (+0.09, -0.12), [O/H] = -0.28 (+0.09, -0.08), and log N(H) = 20.41 (+0.13, -0.17). The absorber probably occurs in the circumgalactic environment (halo) of a foreground galaxy.
For low-redshift cosmology and galaxy formation rates, it is important to account for all the baryons synthesized in the Big Bang. Although galaxies and clusters contain 10% of the baryons, many more reside in the photoionized Lyman-alpha forest and shocked-heated warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at T = 10^5 to 10^7 K. Current tracers of WHIM at 10^5 to 10^6 K include the O VI 1032, 1038 absorption lines, together with broad Lyman-alpha absorbers (BLAs) and EUV/X-ray absorption lines from Ne VIII, O VII, and O VIII. We improve the O VI baryon surveys with corrections for oxygen metallicity…
Photoionization modeling of certain low-ionization broad absorption lines in quasars implies very compact (Delta R~0.01 pc), galaxy-scale (R kpc) absorbers blueshifted by several 1000 km s^-1. While these are likely signatures of quasar outflows, the lifetimes of such compact absorbers are too short for them to be direct ejecta from a nuclear wind. Instead, I argue that the absorbing clouds must be transient and created in situ. Following arguments detailed by Faucher-Giguere, Quataert, & Murray (2011), I show that a model in which the cool absorbers form in radiative shocks arising when a qua…
We examine how HI and metal absorption lines within low-redshift galaxy halos trace the dynamical state of circumgalactic gas, using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations that include a well-vetted heuristic model for galactic outflows. We categorize inflowing, outflowing, and ambient gas based on its history and fate as tracked in our simulation. Following our earlier work showing that the ionisation level of absorbers was a primary factor in determining the physical conditions of absorbing gas, we show here that it is also a governing factor for its dynamical state. Low-ionisation metal abso…
High signal-to-noise (S/N) observations of the QSO PKS 0405-123 (zem = 0.572) with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph from 1134 to 1796 A with a resolution of 17 km s-1 are used to study the multi-phase partial Lyman limit system (LLS) at z = 0.16716 which has previously been studied using relatively low S/N spectra from STIS and FUSE. The LLS and an associated H I-free broad O VI absorber likely originate in the circumgalactic gas associated with a pair of galaxies at z = 0.1688 and 0.1670 with impact parameters of 116 h70-1 and 99 h70-1. The broad and symmetric O VI absorption is detected in th…
We have serendipitously detected a strong O VI-bearing Lyman limit system at z_abs = 0.3558 toward the QSO J1009+0713 (z_em = 0.456) in our survey of low-redshift galaxy halos with the Hubble Space Telescope's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Its rest-frame equivalent width of W_r = 835 +/- 49 mA is the highest for an intervening absorber yet detected in any low-redshift QSO sightline, with absorption spanning 400 km s^-1 in its rest frame. HST/WFC3 images of the galaxy field show that the absorber is associated with two galaxies lying at 14 and 46 kpc from the QSO line of sight. The bulk of the a…
Using a novel suite of cosmological simulations zooming in on a Mpc-scale intergalactic sheet or "pancake" at z~3-5, we conduct an in-depth study of the thermal properties and HI content of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at those redshifts. The simulations span nearly three orders of magnitude in gas-cell mass, from ~(7.7x10^6-1.5x10^4)Msun, one of the highest resolution simulations of such a large patch of the inter-galactic medium (IGM) to date. At z~5, a strong accretion shock develops around the main pancake following a collision between two smaller sheets. Gas in the post-shock …
IGM metal absorption lines observed in z>6 spectra offer the opportunity to probe early feedback processes, the nature of enriching sources, and the topology of reionization. We run high-resolution cosmological simulations including galactic outflows to study the observability and physical properties of 5 ions (C II, C IV, O I, Si II, Si IV) in absorption between z=8->5. We apply three cases for ionization conditions: Fully neutral, fully reionized, and a patchy model based on the flux from the nearest galaxy. We find that our simulations broadly fit available z~5-6 IGM metal-line data, althou…
We report on the detection of Ne VIII in the HST/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectrum of the intervening absorption system at z = 0.495096 towards PKS 0405-123. The high S/N COS spectrum also covers absorption from H I, C III, O III, O IV and O VI associated with this multiphase system. The Ne VIII is detected with high significance in both lines of the doublet, with integrated column densities of log Na(Ne VIII 770) = 13.96 +/- 0.06 dex and log Na(Ne VIII 780) = 14.08 +/- 0.07 dex. We find the origin of Ne VIII consistent with collisionally ionized gas at T ~ 5 x 10^5 K with a large baryonic …
(Abridged) We present a sample of new population of associated absorbers, detected through Ne VIII λλ770,780 absorption, in HST/COS spectra of intermediate redshift (0.45 < z < 1.21) quasars (QSOs). Our sample comprised of total 12 associated Ne VIII systems detected towards 8 lines of sight (none of them are radio bright). The incidence rate of these absorbers is found to be 40%. Majority of the Ne VIII systems at small ejection velocities (v_ej) show complete coverage of the background source, but systems with higher v_ej show lower covering fractions (i.e. f_c < 0.8) and systematically high…
Thermally broadened Ly alpha absorbers (BLAs) offer an alternative method to highly-ionized metal lines for tracing the WHIM. We compile a catalog of reliable BLA candidates along seven AGN sight lines from a larger set of Lya absorbers observed by HST/STIS. We compare our measurements based on independent reduction and analysis of the data to those published by other research groups. Purported BLAs are grouped into probable (15), possible (48) and non-BLA (56) categories. We infer a line frequency (dN/dz)_BLA=18+-11, comparable to observed OVI absorbers. There is significant overlap between B…
We report on the detection of two O VI absorbers separated in velocity by 710 km/s at z ~ 0.4 towards the background quasar SBS0957+599. Both absorbers are multiphase systems tracing substantial reservoirs of warm baryons. The low and intermediate ionization metals in the first absorber is consistent with an origin in photoionized gas. The O VI has a velocity structure different from other metal species. The Ly-alpha shows the presence of a broad feature. The line widths for O VI and the broad Ly-alpha suggest T = 7.1 x 10^5 K. This warm medium is probing a baryonic column which is an order of…
Using high resolution, high signal-to-noise ultraviolet spectra of the z = 0.9754 quasar PG1148+549 obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope, we study the physical conditions and abundances of NeVIII+OVI absorption line systems at z(abs) =0.68381, 0.70152, 0.72478. In addition to NeVIII and OVI, absorption lines from multiple ionization stages of oxygen (OII, OIII, OIV) are detected and are well-aligned with the more highly ionized species. We show that these absorbers are multiphase systems including hot gas (T ~ 10^{5.7} K) that produces NeVIII and OV…
We report on the detection of Ne VIII in an intervening multiphase absorption line system at z=0.32566 in the FUSE spectrum of the quasar 3C 263. The Ne VIII 770 A line detection has a 3.9 sigma significance. At the same velocity we also find absorption lines from C IV, O III, O IV and N IV. The line parameter measurements yield log [N(Ne VIII), cm^-2] =13.98 (+0.10,-0.13) and b = 49.8 +/- 5.5 km/s. We find that the ionization mechanism in the gas phase giving rise to the Ne VIII absorption is inconsistent with photoionization. The absorber has a multi-phase structure, with the intermediate io…
We present results from the analysis of a multiphase O VI - broad Ly-alpha absorber at z = 0.19236 in the HST/COS spectrum of PG 1121+422. The low and intermediate ionization metal lines in this absorber have a single narrow component, whereas the Ly-alpha has a possible broad component with b(HI) $\sim 71$ km/s. Ionization models favor the low and intermediate ions coming from a $T \sim 8,500$ K, moderately dense photoionized gas with near solar metallicities. The weak O VI requires a separate gas phase that is collisionally ionized. The O VI coupled with BLA suggests $T \sim 3.2 \times 10^5$…
Unlike the neutral gas density, which remains largely constant over redshifts of 0 < z < 5, the star formation density exhibits a strong redshift dependence, increasing from the present day before peaking at a redshift of z ~ 2.5. Thus, there is a stark contrast between the star formation rate and the abundance of raw material available to fuel it. However, using the ratio of the strength of the HI 21-cm absorption to the total neutral gas column density to quantify the spin temperature of the gas, it has recently been shown that its reciprocal may trace the star formation density. This would …
We investigate the properties of damped Lyα absorption systems (DLAs) in semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, including partitioning of cold gas in galactic discs into atomic, molecular, and ionized phases with a molecular gas-based star formation recipe. We investigate two approaches for partitioning gas into these constituents: a pressure-based and a metallicity-based recipe. We identify DLAs by passing lines of sight through our simulations to compute HI column densities. We find that models with "standard" gas radial profiles - where the average specific angular momentum of the gas di…
We present analyses of the physical conditions in the z=0.22496 and z=0.22638 multi-phase O VI absorption systems detected in the ultraviolet HST/STIS and FUSE spectra of the quasar H1821+643. Both absorbers are likely associated with the extended halo of a ~2L* Sbc-Sc galaxy situated at a projected distance of ~116 kpc from the sight line. The z=0.22496 absorber is detected in C II, C III, C IV, O III, O VI, Si II, Si III and H I at > 3 sigma significance. The low and intermediate ions in this absorber are consistent with an origin in photoionized gas with [Si/H] and [C/H] of -0.6 dex. In con…
We investigate the metallicity evolution and content of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galactic halo gas from z=2->0 using 110-million particle cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. We focus on the detectability and physical properties of UV resonance metal-line absorbers observable with Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). We confirm that galactic superwind outflows are required to enrich the IGM to observed levels down to z=0 using three wind prescriptions contrasted to a no-wind simulation. Our favoured momentum-conserved wind prescription deposits metals closer to galaxies owin…
We present analysis of two O VI absorbers at redshift z_{abs} = 0.227, detected in the spectra of two closely spaced QSO sightlines (Q 0107-025 A and B), observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). At the same redshift, presence of a single bright (~ 1.2 L*) galaxy at an impact parameter of ~ 200 kpc (proper) from both the sightlines was reported by Crighton et al. (2010). Using detailed photoionization models we show that the high ionization phases of both the O VI absorbers have similar ionization conditions (e.g. log U ~ -1.1 to -0.9), chem…
Ultraviolet observations of the QSO 3C 263 (zem = 0.652) with COS and FUSE reveal O VI absorption systems at z = 0.06342 and 0.14072 . WIYN multi-object spectrograph observations provide information about the galaxies associated with the absorbers. The multi-phase system at z = 0.06342 traces cool photoionized gas and warm collisionally ionized gas associated with a L ~ 0.31L* compact spiral emission line galaxy with an impact parameter of 63 kpc. The cool photoionized gas in the absorber is well modeled with log U ~ -2.6, log N(H) ~17.8, log n(H) ~ -3.3 and [Si/H] = -0.14\pm0.23. The collisio…
This paper presents the first results from a model for chemical evolution that can be applied to N-body cosmological simulations and quantitatively compared to measured stellar abundances from large astronomical surveys. This model convolves the chemical yield sets from a range of stellar nucleosynthesis calculations (including AGB stars, Type Ia and II supernovae, and stellar wind models) with a user-specified stellar initial mass function (IMF) and metallicity to calculate the time-dependent chemical evolution model for a "simple stellar population" of uniform metallicity and formation time.…
We present a detection of a broad Ly-alpha absorber (BLA) with a matching O VI line in the nearby universe. The BLA is detected at z = 0.01028 in the high S/N spectrum of Mrk 290 obtained using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. The Ly-alpha absorption has two components, with b(HI) = 55 +/- 1 km/s and b(HI) = 33 +/- 1 km/s, separated in velocity by v ~ 115 km/s. The O VI, detected by FUSE at z = 0.01027, has a b(OVI) = 29 +/- 3 km/s and is kinematically well aligned with the broader HI component. The different line widths of the BLA and OVI suggest a temperature of T = 1.4 x 10^5 K in the absor…

We present observations of the O VI system at z_abs = 0.495096 toward PKS 0405-123 (z_em = 0.5726) obtained with FUSE and STIS. In addition to strong O VI, with log N(O VI) = 14.47+/-0.02, and moderate H I this absorber shows C III, N IV, O IV, and O V, with upper limits for another seven ions. The large number of available ions allows us to test ionization models usually adopted with far less contraints. We find the ionic column densities cannot be matched by collisional ionization models, in or out of equilibrium. Photoionization models can match the observed column densities, including O VI…
The intergalactic medium (IGM) is the dominant reservoir of baryons at all cosmic epochs. We investigate the evolution of the IGM from z=2-0 in 48 Mpc/h, 110-million particle cosmological hydrodynamic simulations using three prescriptions for galactic outflows. We focus on the evolution of IGM physical properties, and how such properties are traced by Ly-alpha absorption as detectable using HST/COS. Our results broadly confirm the canonical picture that most Ly-alpha absorbers arise from highly ionized gas tracing filamentary large-scale structure. Growth of structure causes gas to move from t…
We report a bimodality in the azimuthal angle distribution of gas around galaxies as traced by MgII absorption: Halo gas prefers to exist near the projected galaxy major and minor axes. The bimodality is demonstrated by computing the mean azimuthal angle probability distribution function using 88 spectroscopically confirmed MgII absorption-selected galaxies [W_r(2796)>0.1A] and 35 spectroscopically confirmed non-absorbing galaxies [W_r(2796)<0.1A] imaged with HST and SDSS. The azimuthal angle distribution for non-absorbers is flat, indicating no azimuthal preference for gas characterized by W_…
Today, the majority of the cosmic baryons in the Universe are not observed directly, leading to an issue of "missing baryons" at low redshift. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have indicated that a significant portion of them will be converted into the so-called Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), with gas temperature ranging between 10$^5$-10$^7$K. While the cooler phase of this gas has been observed using O VI and Ne VIII absorbers at UV wavelengths, the hotter fraction detection relies mostly on observations of O VII and O VIII at X-ray wavelengths. Here, we target the forbidden li…
Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy evolution are increasingly able to produce realistic galaxies, but the largest hurdle remaining is in constructing subgrid models that accurately describe the behavior of stellar feedback. As an alternate way to test and calibrate such models, we propose to focus on the circumgalactic medium. To do so, we generate a suite of adaptive-mesh refinement (AMR) simulations for a Milky-Way-massed galaxy run to z=0, systematically varying the feedback implementation. We then post-process the simulation data to compute the absorbing column density for a…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies consists of a multiphase gas with components at very different temperatures, from $10^ {4}$ K to $10^ {7}$ K. One of the greatest puzzle about this medium is the presence of a large amount of low-temperature ($T\sim10^4$ K) gas around quiescent early-type galaxies (ETGs). Using semi-analytical parametric models, we describe the cool CGM around massive, low-redshift ETGs as the cosmological accretion of gas into their dark matter halos, resulting in an inflow of clouds from the external parts of the halos to the central galaxies. We compare our predic…

We study the cool gas around a galaxy at z = 0.4729 using Keck/LRIS spectroscopy of a bright (B = 21.7) background galaxy at z = 0.6942 at a transverse distance of 16.5/h_70 kpc. The background galaxy spectrum reveals strong FeII, MgII, MgI, and CaII absorption at the redshift of the foreground galaxy, with a MgII 2796 rest equivalent width of 3.93 +/- 0.08 Angstroms, indicative of a velocity width exceeding 400 km/s. Because the background galaxy is large (> 4/h_70 kpc), the high covering fraction of the absorbing gas suggests that it arises in a spatially extended complex of cool clouds with…
(Abridged) This paper presents an absorption-line study of the multiphase circumgalactic medium (CGM) based on observations of Lya, CII, CIV, SiII, SiIII, and SiIV absorption transitions in the vicinities of 195 galaxies at redshift z<0.176. The galaxy sample is established based on a cross-comparison between public galaxy and QSO survey data and is characterized by a median redshift of <z>=0.041, a median projected distance of <d>=362 kpc to the sightline of the background QSO, and a median stellar mass of log(M_star/M_sun) = 9.7 \pm 1.1. Comparing the absorber features identified in the QSO …
The Ly$α$ forest decomposed into Voigt profile components allow us to study clustering properties of the intergalactic medium and its dependence on various physical quantities. Here, we report the first detections of probability excess of low-z (i.e z<0.48) Ly$α$ absorber triplets over a scale of $r_\parallel\leq8$pMpc with a maximum amplitude of $8.76^{+1.96}_{-1.65}$ at a longitudinal separation of 1-2pMpc. We measure non-zero three-point correlation ($ζ=4.76^{+1.98}_{-1.67}$) only at this scale with reduced three-point correlation value of Q=$0.95^{+0.39}_{-0.38}$. The measured $ζ$ shows an…
We present TREVR (Tree-based REVerse Ray Tracing), a general algorithm for computing the radiation field, including absorption, in astrophysical simulations. TREVR is designed to handle large numbers of sources and absorbers; it is based on a tree data structure and is thus suited to codes that use trees for their gravity or hydrodynamics solvers (e.g. Adaptive Mesh Refinement). It achieves computational speed while maintaining a specified accuracy via controlled lowering of the resolution of both sources and rays from each source. TREVR computes the radiation field in order ${N\log N_{source}…
We use the SAURON and GMOS integral field spectrographs to observe the active galactic nucleus (AGN) powered outflow in NGC 1266. This unusual galaxy is relatively nearby (D=30 Mpc), allowing us to investigate the process of AGN feedback in action. We present maps of the kinematics and line strengths of the ionised gas emission lines Halpha, Hbeta, [OIII], [OI], [NII] and [SII], and report on the detection of Sodium D absorption. We use these tracers to explore the structure of the source, derive the ionised and atomic gas kinematics and investigate the gas excitation and physical conditions. …
The winds of ionized gas driven by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can be studied through absorption lines in their X-ray spectra. A recurring feature of these outflows is their broad ionization distribution, including essentially all ionization levels (e.g., Fe^0+ to Fe^25+). This characteristic feature can be quantified with the absorption measure distribution (AMD), defined as the distribution of column density with ionization parameter |dN / dlog xi|. Observed AMDs extend over 0.1 < xi < 10^4 (cgs), and are remarkably similar in different objects. Power-law fits (|dN /dlog xi| ~ N_1 xi^a) yie…

We present HST/COS observations of highly ionized absorption lines associated with a radio-loud QSO at $z=1.1319$. The absorption system has multiple velocity components, tracing gas that is largely outflowing from the QSO at velocities of a few 100 km s$^{-1}$. There is an unprecedented range in ionization, with detections of HI, NIII, NIV, NV, OIV, OIV*, OV, OVI, NeVIII, MgX, SV and ArVIII. We estimate the total hydrogen number density from the column density ratio N(OIV*)/N(OIV) to be $\log(n_{\textrm{H}}/\textrm{cm}^3)\sim 3$. Assuming photoionization equilibrium, we derive a distance to t…
