Using a novel suite of cosmological simulations zooming in on a Mpc-scale intergalactic sheet or "pancake" at z~3-5, we conduct an in-depth study of the thermal properties and HI content of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at those redshifts. The simulations span nearly three orders of magnitude in gas-cell mass, from ~(7.7x10^6-1.5x10^4)Msun, one of the highest resolution simulations of such a large patch of the inter-galactic medium (IGM) to date. At z~5, a strong accretion shock develops around the main pancake following a collision between two smaller sheets. Gas in the post-shock region proceeds to cool rapidly, triggering thermal instabilities and the formation of a multiphase medium. We find neither the mass, nor the morphology, nor the distribution of HI in the WHIM to be converged at our highest resolution. Interestingly, the lack of convergence is more severe for the less dense, more metal-poor, intra-pancake medium (IPM) in between filaments and far from any star-forming galaxies. As the resolution increases, the IPM develops a shattered structure, with ~kpc scale clouds containing most of the HI. From our lowest to highest resolution, the covering fraction of metal-poor (Z<10^{-3}Zsun) Lyman-limit systems (NHI>10^{17.2}/cm^2) in the IPM at z~4 increases from (3-15)%, while that of Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers (NHI>10^{20}/cm^2) with similar metallicity increases threefold, from (0.2-0.6)%, with no sign of convergence. We find that a necessary condition for the formation of a multiphase, shattered structure is resolving the cooling length, lcool=cs*tcool, at T~10^5K. If this scale is unresolved, gas "piles up" at these temperatures and cooling to lower temperatures becomes very inefficient. We conclude that state-of-the-art cosmological simulations are still unable to resolve the multi-phase structure of the low-density IGM, with potentially far-reaching implications.
We report a detection of an absorption line at ~44.8 Å in a > 500 ks Chandra HRC-S/LETG X-ray grating spectrum of the blazar H 2356-309. This line can be identified as intervening CV-Kα absorption, at z\approx0.112, produced by a warm (log T = 5.1 K) intergalactic absorber. The feature is significant at a 2.9σ level (accounting for the number of independent redshift trials). We estimate an equivalent hydrogen column density of log N_H=19.05 (Z/Zsun)^-1 cm^-2. Unlike other previously reported FUV/X-ray metal detections of warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), this CV absorber lies in a region w…
We explore the high spectral resolution X-ray data towards the quasar 3C273 to search for signals of hot ($\sim10^{6-7}$ K) X-ray-absorbing gas co-located with two established intergalactic FUV OVI absorbers. We analyze the soft X-ray band grating data of all XMM-Newton and Chandra instruments to search for the hot phase absorption lines at the FUV predicted redshifts. The viability of potential line detections is examined by adopting the constraints of a physically justified absorption model. The WHIM hypothesis is investigated with a complementary 3D galaxy distribution analysis, and by comp…
We present a possible OVIII X-ray absorption line at $z=0.117 \pm 0.001$ which, if confirmed, will be the first one associated with a broad HI Ly$β$ (BLB: FWHM=$160^{+50}_{-30}$ km s$^{-1}$) absorber. The absorber lies along the line of sight to the nearby ($z=0.1372$) Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS~0558-504, consistent with being a WHIM filament. The X-ray absorber is marginally detected in two independent XMM-Newton spectra of PKS~0558-504, a long $\sim 600$ ks Guest-Observer observation and a shorter, $\sim 300$ ks total, calibration observation, with a combined single line statistical significance o…
For low-redshift cosmology and galaxy formation rates, it is important to account for all the baryons synthesized in the Big Bang. Although galaxies and clusters contain 10% of the baryons, many more reside in the photoionized Lyman-alpha forest and shocked-heated warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at T = 10^5 to 10^7 K. Current tracers of WHIM at 10^5 to 10^6 K include the O VI 1032, 1038 absorption lines, together with broad Lyman-alpha absorbers (BLAs) and EUV/X-ray absorption lines from Ne VIII, O VII, and O VIII. We improve the O VI baryon surveys with corrections for oxygen metallicity…
We present a re-analysis, with newly acquired atomic data, of the two detections of two highly ionized intervening OVII absorbers reported by Nicastro and collaborators (2018). We confirm both intervening Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium OVII detections, and revise statistical significance and physical parameters of the absorber at $z=0.4339$ in light of its partial contamination by Galactic interstellar medium NII K$α$ absorption.
Thermally-broadened Lya absorbers (BLAs) offer an alternate method to using highly-ionized metal absorbers (OVI, OVII, etc.) to probe the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM, T=10^5-10^7 K). Until now, WHIM surveys via BLAs have been no less ambiguous than those via far-UV and X-ray metal-ion probes. Detecting these weak, broad features requires background sources with a well-characterized far-UV continuum and data of very high quality. However, a recent HST/COS observation of the z=0.03 blazar Mrk421 allows us to perform a metal-independent search for WHIM gas with unprecedented precision. Th…

We investigate the physical state of HI absorbing gas at low redshift (z = 0.25) using a subset of cosmological, hydrodynamic simulations from the OWLS project, focusing in particular on broad (b_HI > 40 km/s) HI Lyman-Alpha absorbers (BLAs), which are believed to originate in shock-heated gas in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). Our fiducial model, which includes radiative cooling by heavy elements and feedback by supernovae and active galactic nuclei, predicts that by z = 0.25 nearly 60 per cent of the gas mass ends up at densities and temperatures characteristic of the WHIM and we f…
With high resolution (0.46kpc/h), adaptive mesh-refinement Eulerian cosmological hydrodynamic simulations we compute properties of O VI and O VII absorbers from the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). Our new simulations are in broad agreement with previous simulations, with ~40% of the intergalactic medium being in the WHIM at z=0. It is found (1) The amount of gas in the WHIM at temperature below and above 10^6K is about equal within uncertainties. (1) Our simulations are in excellent agreement with observed properties of O VI absorbers, with respect to the line incidence rate and Doppler …
The intergalactic medium (IGM) is the dominant reservoir of baryons at all cosmic epochs. We investigate the evolution of the IGM from z=2-0 in 48 Mpc/h, 110-million particle cosmological hydrodynamic simulations using three prescriptions for galactic outflows. We focus on the evolution of IGM physical properties, and how such properties are traced by Ly-alpha absorption as detectable using HST/COS. Our results broadly confirm the canonical picture that most Ly-alpha absorbers arise from highly ionized gas tracing filamentary large-scale structure. Growth of structure causes gas to move from t…
We perform a series of cosmological simulations using Enzo, an Eulerian adaptive-mesh refinement, N-body + hydrodynamical code, applied to study the warm/hot intergalactic medium. The WHIM may be an important component of the baryons missing observationally at low redshift. We investigate the dependence of the global star formation rate and mass fraction in various baryonic phases on spatial resolution and methods of incorporating stellar feedback. Although both resolution and feedback significantly affect the total mass in the WHIM, all of our simulations find that the WHIM fraction peaks at …
We present a detailed analysis of the galaxy and group distributions around three reported X-ray absorption line systems in the spectrum of the quasar H2356-309. Previous studies associated these absorbers with known large-scale galaxy structures (i.e., walls and filaments) along the line of sight. Such absorption lines typically trace 10^{5-7} K gas, and may be evidence of the elusive warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) thought to harbor the bulk of the low-redshift "missing baryons;" alternatively, they may be linked to individual galaxies or groups in the filaments. Here we combine existin…
We make use of a 500ks Chandra HRC-S/LETG spectrum of the blazar H2356-309, combined with a lower S/N spectrum of the same target, to search for the presence of warm-hot absorbing gas associated with two Large-Scale Structures (LSSs) crossed by this sightline at z=0.062 (the Pisces-Cetus Supercluster, PCS) and at z=0.128 ("Farther Sculptor Wall", FSW). No statistically significant (>=3sigma) individual absorption is detected from any of the strong He- or H-like transitions of C, O and Ne at the redshifts of the structures. However we are still able to constrain the physical and geometrical par…
The warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at temperatures 1E5-1E7 K is believed to contain 30-50% of the baryons in the local universe. However, all current X-ray detections of the WHIM at redshifts z>0 are of low statistical significance (<=3sigma) and/or controversial. In this work, we aim to establish the detection limits of current X-ray observatories and explore requirements for next-generation X-ray telescopes for studying the WHIM through X-ray absorption lines. We analyze all available grating observations of Mrk 421 and obtain spectra with signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of \sim90 and 190 …
The problem of missing baryons in the local universe remains an open question. One propose alternative is that at low redshift missing baryons are in the form of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). In order to test this idea, we present a detailed analysis of X-ray high-resolution spectra of six extragalactic sources, Mrk 421, 1ES 1028+511, 1ES 1553+113, H2356-309, PKS 0558-504 and PG 1116+215, obtained with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer to search for signals of WHIM and/or circumgalactic medium (CGM) X-ray absorbing gas. We fit the X-ray absorption with the IONeq model,…
We present a comprehensive catalog of ultraviolet HST/STIS and FUSE absorbers in the low-redshift IGM at z<0.4. The catalog draws from the extensive literature on IGM absorption, and it reconciles discrepancies among previous catalogs through a critical evaluation of all reported absorption features in light of new HST/COS data. We report on 746 HI absorbers down to a rest-frame equivalent width of 12 milliAngstroms over a maximum redshift path length Deltaz=5.38. We also confirm 111 OVI absorbers, 29 CIV absorbers, and numerous absorption features due to other metal ions. We characterize the …
Thermally broadened Ly alpha absorbers (BLAs) offer an alternative method to highly-ionized metal lines for tracing the WHIM. We compile a catalog of reliable BLA candidates along seven AGN sight lines from a larger set of Lya absorbers observed by HST/STIS. We compare our measurements based on independent reduction and analysis of the data to those published by other research groups. Purported BLAs are grouped into probable (15), possible (48) and non-BLA (56) categories. We infer a line frequency (dN/dz)_BLA=18+-11, comparable to observed OVI absorbers. There is significant overlap between B…
The "missing baryons", in the form of warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), are expected to reside in cosmic filamentary structures that can be traced by signposts such as large-scale galaxy superstructures. The clear detection of an X-ray absorption line in the Sculptor Wall demonstrated the success of using galaxy superstructures as a signpost to search for the WHIM. Here we present an XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) observation of the blazar Mkn 501, located in the Hercules Supercluster. We detected an O VII K$α$ absorption line at the 98.7 % level ($2.5σ$) at the redshift …
Using hydrodynamic simulations we compute the metal enrichment history of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We show that galactic superwind (GSW) feedback can transport metals to the IGM and that the properties of simulated metal absorbers match observations. The distance of influence of GSW is typically limited to >0.5Mpc and within regions of overdensity >10. Most CIV and OVI absorbers are located within shocked regions of elevated temperature (T>2x10^4K), overdensity (>10), and metallicity ([-2.5,-0.5]). OVI absorbers have typically higher metallicity, lower density and higher temperature tha…
We present HST/COS high S/N observations of the z = 0.32566 multi-phase absorber towards 3C263. The COS data shows absorption from H I, O VI, C III, N III, Si III and C II. The Ne VIII in this absorber is detected in the FUSE spectrum. The low and intermediate ions are kinematically aligned with each other and H I and display narrow line widths of 6 km/s. The O VI lines are kinematically offset by 12 km/s from the low ions and are a factor of four broader. All metal ions except O VI and Ne VIII are consistent with an origin in gas photoionized by the extragalactic background radiation. The bul…
We investigate the origin and physical properties of OVI absorbers at low redshift (z = 0.25) using a subset of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations from the OverWhelmingly Large Simulations (OWLS) project. Intervening OVI absorbers are believed to trace shock-heated gas in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) and may thus play a key role in the search for the missing baryons in the present-day Universe. When compared to observations, the predicted distributions of the different OVI line parameters (column density, Doppler parameter, rest equivalent width) from our simulations exhibit …
We present a detection of a broad Ly-alpha absorber (BLA) with a matching O VI line in the nearby universe. The BLA is detected at z = 0.01028 in the high S/N spectrum of Mrk 290 obtained using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. The Ly-alpha absorption has two components, with b(HI) = 55 +/- 1 km/s and b(HI) = 33 +/- 1 km/s, separated in velocity by v ~ 115 km/s. The O VI, detected by FUSE at z = 0.01027, has a b(OVI) = 29 +/- 3 km/s and is kinematically well aligned with the broader HI component. The different line widths of the BLA and OVI suggest a temperature of T = 1.4 x 10^5 K in the absor…
Today, the majority of the cosmic baryons in the Universe are not observed directly, leading to an issue of "missing baryons" at low redshift. Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations have indicated that a significant portion of them will be converted into the so-called Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM), with gas temperature ranging between 10$^5$-10$^7$K. While the cooler phase of this gas has been observed using O VI and Ne VIII absorbers at UV wavelengths, the hotter fraction detection relies mostly on observations of O VII and O VIII at X-ray wavelengths. Here, we target the forbidden li…
We present observations of the O VI system at z_abs = 0.495096 toward PKS 0405-123 (z_em = 0.5726) obtained with FUSE and STIS. In addition to strong O VI, with log N(O VI) = 14.47+/-0.02, and moderate H I this absorber shows C III, N IV, O IV, and O V, with upper limits for another seven ions. The large number of available ions allows us to test ionization models usually adopted with far less contraints. We find the ionic column densities cannot be matched by collisional ionization models, in or out of equilibrium. Photoionization models can match the observed column densities, including O VI…
We report on the detection of Ne VIII in the HST/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectrum of the intervening absorption system at z = 0.495096 towards PKS 0405-123. The high S/N COS spectrum also covers absorption from H I, C III, O III, O IV and O VI associated with this multiphase system. The Ne VIII is detected with high significance in both lines of the doublet, with integrated column densities of log Na(Ne VIII 770) = 13.96 +/- 0.06 dex and log Na(Ne VIII 780) = 14.08 +/- 0.07 dex. We find the origin of Ne VIII consistent with collisionally ionized gas at T ~ 5 x 10^5 K with a large baryonic …
