We report fragmentation cross sections measured at 0 deg for beams of 14-N, 16-O, 20-Ne, and 24-Mg ions, at energies ranging from 290 MeV/nucleon to 1000 MeV/nucleon. Beams were incident on targets of C, CH2, Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb, with the C and CH2 target data used to obtain hydrogen-target cross sections. Using methods established in earlier work, cross sections obtained with both large-acceptance and small-acceptance detectors are extracted from the data and when necessary corrected for acceptance effects. The large-acceptance data yield cross sections for fragments with charges approximately half of the beam charge and above, with minimal corrections. Cross sections for lighter fragments are obtained from small-acceptance spectra, with more significant, model-dependent corrections that account for the fragment angular distributions. Results for both charge-changing and fragment production cross sections are compared to the predictions of the Los Alamos version of the Quark Gluon String Model (LAQGSM) as well as the NUCFRG2 and PHITS models. For all beams and targets, cross sections for fragments as light as He are compared to the models. Estimates of multiplicity-weighted helium production cross sections are obtained from the data and compared to PHITS and LAQGSM predictions. Summary statistics show that the level of agreement between data and predictions is slightly better for PHITS than for either NUCFRG2 or LAQGSM.
We explore further applications of the twist-two quark interference fragmentation functions introduced earlier. We show that semi-inclusive production of two pions in the current fragmentation region in deep inelastic scattering of a longitudinally polarized electron on a longitudinally polarized nucleon can provide a probe of the valence quark spin (or helicity difference) distribution in the nucleon.
Isotope production cross sections from 112Sn + 112Sn and 124Sn + 124Sn reactions at 1 GeV/nucleon, which were measured recently at GSI using the heavy-ion accelerator SIS18 and the Fragment Separator (FRS), have been analyzed with the latest Los Alamos Monte-Carlo transport code MCNP6 using the LAQGSM03.03 event generator. MCNP6 reproduces reasonably well all the measured cross sections. Comparison of the MCNP6 results with the measured data and with calculations by a modification of the Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model allowing for multifragmentation processes in the framewo…
Based on the Isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model, the isotope Sn+Sn reactions at 270 MeV/nucleon are investigated. It is shown that nucleon and meson observables in the Sn+Sn reactions at 270 MeV/nucleon cannot effectively probe the high-density symmetry energy. These observables, however, are sensitive to the curvature of the symmetry energy. It thus sheds light on the study of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy by extracting the curvature of the symmetry energy through the interpretation of forthcoming RIBF/RIKEN related data.
The fragmentation of a colored parton directly into a pair of colorless hadrons is a non-perturbative mechanism that offers important insights into the nucleon structure. Di-hadron fragmentation functions can be extracted from semi-inclusive electron-positron annihilation data. They also appear in observables describing the semi-inclusive production of two hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering of leptons off nucleons or in hadron-hadron collisions. When a target nucleon is transversely polarized, a specific chiral-odd di-hadron fragmentation function can be used as the analyzer of the net densi…
The collisions in four different reaction systems using $^{40,48}$Ca and $^{58,64}$Ni isotope beams and a Be target have been simulated using the Heavy Ion Phase Space Exploration and the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics models. The present study mainly focuses on the model predictions for the excitation energies of the hot fragments and the cross sections of the final fragments produced in these reactions. The effects of various factors influencing the final fragment cross sections, such as the choice of the statistical decay code and its parameters have been explored. The predicted fragmen…
An attempt to extract critical exponents gamma, beta and tau from data on gold nuclei fragmentation due to interactions with nuclear emulsion at energies 4.0 A GeV and 10.6 A GeV is presented. Based on analysis of Campi's 2nd charge moments, two subsets of data at each energy are selected from the inclusive data, corresponding to 'liquid' and 'gas' phases. The extracted values of critical exponents from the selected data sets are in agreement with predictions of 'liquid-gas' model of phase transition.
It is shown that $Λ$-hyperon fragmentation in charged lepton deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a polarized nucleon target can provide sensitive information concerning the quark helicity and transversity distributions for both nucleon and $Λ$-hyperon at large $x$. Numerical predictions are given for the spin transfers of the produced $Λ$, when the target nucleon is polarized either longitudinally or transversely, and with the nucleon and $Λ$ quark distributions evaluated both in an SU(6) quark-spectator-diquark model and in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. It is also shown that the predi…
An extended version of the Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) of nuclear reactions is applied to analyze nucleon-induced fission cross sections for Bi-209 and Pb-208 nuclei in the 45-500 MeV energy range. The available data on linear momentum transfer are analyzed as well. The results are compared with analytical approximations resulting from a comparative critical analysis of all available experimental data. Systematic discrepancies between calculations and experimental data are revealed. A modification of the CEM is proposed, which significantly improves the model predictions for projectile energie…
Based on the recently updated Isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model, we studied the effects of symmetry energy on the neutron to proton n/p ratio and the $π^{-}/π^{+}$ ratio in central $^{132}\rm {Sn}+^{124}\rm {Sn}$ reaction at 300 MeV/nucleon. It is found that the n/p ratio and the $π^{-}/π^{+}$ ratio in central $^{132}\rm {Sn}+^{124}\rm {Sn}$ reaction at 300 MeV/nucleon mainly probe the symmetry energy in the density region 1-1.5 times saturation density. However, the $π^{-}/π^{+}$ ratio may be able to probe the density-dependent symmetry energy above 1.5 time…
During therapeutic treatments using ions such as carbon, nuclear interactions between the incident ions and nuclei present in organic tissues may occur, leading to the attenuation of the incident beam intensity and to the production of secondary light charged particles. As the biological dose deposited in the tumor and the surrounding healthy tissues depends on the beam composition, an accurate knowledge of the fragmentation processes is thus essential. In particular, the nuclear interaction models have to be validated using experimental double differential cross sections which are still very …
We investigate the possibilities of producing neutron-rich nuclides in projectile fission of heavy beams in the energy range of 20 MeV/nucleon expected from low-energy facilities. We report our efforts to theoretically describe the reaction mechanism of projectile fission following a multinucleon transfer collision at this energy range. Our calculations are mainly based on a two-step approach: the dynamical stage of the collision is described with either the phenomenological Deep-Inelastic Transfer model (DIT), or with the microscopic Constrained Molecular Dynamics model (CoMD). The deexcitati…
We present our recent study of cross sections and angular distributions of projectile fragments from heavy-ion reactions at beam energy of 15 MeV/nucleon. We studied the production cross sections and the angular distributions of neutron-rich nuclides from collisions of a 86 Kr (15 MeV/nucleon) beam with heavy targets ( 64 Ni, 124 Sn and 238 U). Experimental data from our previous work at Texas A & M were compared with model calculations. Our calculations were based on a two-step approach: the dynamical stage of the collision was described with, first, the phenomenological Deep-Inelastic Transf…
Momentum spectra of hydrogen isotopes have been measured at 3.5 deg from C12 fragmentation on a Be target. Momentum spectra cover both the region of fragmentation maximum and the cumulative region. Differential cross sections span five orders of magnitude. The data are compared to predictions of four Monte Carlo codes: QMD, LAQGSM, BC, and INCL++. There are large differences between the data and predictions of some models in the high momentum region. The INCL++ code gives the best and almost perfect description of the data.
Analysis of data involving nuclei far from stability often requires optical potential (OP) for neutron scattering. Since neutron data is seldom available, while proton scattering data is more abundant, it is useful to have estimates of the difference of the neutron and proton optical potentials. This information is contained in the isospin dependence of the nucleon OP. Here we attempt to provide it for the nucleon-208Pb system. The goal of this paper is to obtain accurate n+208Pb scattering data, and use it, together with existing p+208Pb and 208Pb(p,n)208$Bi*_{IAS} data, to obtain an accurate…
A model for the description of photonuclear reactions in the multi-GeV range is described that combines the coherent initial state interactions (shadowing) of the incoming photon with an incoherent coupled channel description of final state interactons of outgoing particles. Particle production itself is treated either, at low energies, through nucleon resonance decays or, at higher energies, through string fragmentation. The initial state nucleons can be far-off-shell due to ground state correlations. Results are shown for semi-inclusive meson production.
Spectroscopic properties of nuclei are accessible with projectile fragmentation reactions, but approximations made in the reaction theory can limit the accuracy of the determinations. We examine here two models that have rather different approximations for the nucleon wave function, the target interaction, and the treatment of the finite duration of the reaction. The nucleon-target interaction is treated differently in the eikonal and the transfer-to-continuum model, but the differences are more significant for light targets. We propose a new parameterization with that in mind. We also propose…
We study the nonperturbative renormalization of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of chiral effective field theory. A systematic variation of the cutoff parameter is performed for values below the chiral symmetry breaking scale of about 1 GeV. The accuracy of the predictions is determined by calculating the $χ^2$ for the reproduction of the NN data for energy intervals below pion-production threshold. At NLO, the NN data are described well up to about 100 MeV laboratory energy and, at NNLO, up to about 200 MeV---with, e…
Anisotropic flows ($v_1$, $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$) of light fragments up till the mass number 4 as a function of rapidity have been studied for 25 MeV/nucleon $^{40}$Ca + $^{40}$Ca at large impact parameters by Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. A phenomenological scaling behavior of rapidity dependent flow parameters $v_n$ (n = 1, 2, 3 and 4) has been found as a function of mass number plus a constant term, which may arise from the interplay of collective and random motions. In addition, $v_4/{v_2}^2$ keeps almost independent of rapidity and remains a rough constant of 1/2 for all light fragmen…
Fragmentation reactions with intermediate-energy heavy-ion beams exhibit a wide range of reaction mechanisms, ranging from direct reactions to statistical processes. We examine this transition by measuring the relative population of excited states in several sd-shell nuclei produced by fragmentation with the number of removed nucleons ranging from two to sixteen. The two-nucleon removal is consistent with a non-dissipative process whereas the removal of more than five nucleons appears to be mainly statistical.
The effects of cluster correlations have been studied in the $^{12}$C + $^{12}$C reaction at 50 MeV/nucleon, using three AMD models, the AMD (AMD/D) without any additional cluster correlations, AMD/D-COALS with nucleon correlations based on a coalescence prescription for light cluster formations with $A\leq4$ and AMD-Cluster with an extended cluster correlation in two-nucleon collision processes and a special treatment for intermediate fragment formation with A $\le 9$. The angular distributions and energy spectra of fragments have been simulated and compared with the available experimental da…
Vector analyzing powers for proton elastic scattering from 8He at 71 MeV/nucleon have been measured using a solid polarized proton target operated in a low magnetic field of 0.1 T. The spin-orbit potential obtained from a phenomenological optical model analysis is found to be significantly shallower and more diffuse than the global systematics of stable nuclei, which is an indication that the spin-orbit potential is modified for scattering involving neutron-rich nuclei. A close similarity between the matter radius and the root-mean-square radius of the spin-orbit potential is also identified.
A recent analysis of experimental ternary fission fragment yields using a nucleation moderated statistical equilibrium model reproduced observed yields with fairly good accuracy. In the present work, the same approach is applied to neck emission in peripheral and mid-peripheral 124Sn+112,124Sn collisions at 26A MeV. The model can reasonably reproduce the yields of lithium to silicon isotopes with realistic time and temperature values. A comparison is made between equilibrium constants derived from the present data and those previously obtained for ternary fission of 242Pu.
Experimental data for central collisions of $^{129}$Xe on $^{119}$Sn at beam energies of (a) 32 MeV/nucleon, (b) 39 MeV/nucleon, (c) 45 MeV/nucleon and (d) 50 MeV/nucleon are compared with results calculated using a hybrid model. We use a transport model (BUU) to obtain the excitation energy per nucleon in the center of mass of the multifragmenting system. The canonical thermodynamic model is then used to determine the temperature which would lead to this excitation energy. With this temperature we use the canonical thermodynamic model to calculate various experimental data such as multiplicit…
Neutron- and proton-induced fission cross-sections of separated isotopes of tungsten (182W, 183W, 184W, and 186W) and natural tungsten relative to 209Bi have been measured in the incident nucleon energy region 50-200 MeV using fission chambers based on thin-film breakdown counters (TFBC) at quasi-monoenergetic neutrons from the 7Li(p,n) reaction and at the proton beams of The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL), Uppsala University (Uppsala, Sweden). The preliminary experimental data are presented in comparison with the recent data for nuclei in the lead-bismuth region, as well as with predictions by the…
The directed and elliptic flow in collisions of $^{112}Sn$ + $^{112}Sn$ at energies from 35 to 90 MeV/nucleon were studied in an isospin-dependent quantum molecule dynamics model (IQMD). With increasing incident energy, the directed flow rises from the negative flow to the positive flow. Its magnitude depends on the nuclear equation of state (EOS). However, the elliptic flow shows decrease with increasing incident energy and its magnitude is not very sensible to EOS. Systematic studies of the impact parameter dependence and cluster mass dependence were also performed. The study of directed flo…
We measured fragmentation cross sections produced using the primary beam of $^{86}$Kr at 64 MeV/nucleon on $^9$Be and $^{181}$Ta targets. The cross sections were obtained by integrating the momentum distributions of isotopes with 25<Z<36 measured using the RIPS fragment separator at RIKEN. The cross-section ratios obtained with the $^{181}$Ta and $^{9}$Be targets depend on the fragment masses, contrary to the simple geometrical models. We compared the extracted cross sections to EPAX; an empirical parameterization of fragmentation cross sections. Predictions from current EPAX parameterization …
Thermal and transport properties of hot nuclear matter formed in central $^{129}$Xe + $^{119}$Sn collisions at the Fermi energy are investigated using the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamical (IQMD) model. Temperature ($T$), average density ($ρ$), chemical potential ($μ$), mean momentum ($P$), shear viscosity ($η$) and entropy density ($s$) are obtained from the phase-space information. The mean free path ($λ_{nn}$) and the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section ($σ_{nn}$) in the highest compressible stage at different incident energies are deduced and compared with the experimental …
Within a transport model, we study effects of the momentum dependence of nuclear symmetry potential on pion observables in central Sn + Sn collisions at 270 MeV/nucleon. To this end, a quantity $U_{sym}^{\infty}(ρ_{0})$, i.e., the value of nuclear symmetry potential at the saturation density $ρ_{0}$ and infinitely large nucleon momentum, is used to characterise the momentum dependence of nuclear symmetry potential. It is shown that with a certain $L$ (i.e., slope of nuclear symmetry energy at $ρ_{0}$) the characteristic parameter $U_{sym}^{\infty}(ρ_{0})$ of symmetry potential affects signific…
We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. We show that data are better described by SMM than by GEMINI in agreement with the fact that multifragmentation is responsible for fragment production at excitation energies around 3 MeV/nucleon…
The sensitivities of isospin asymmetry and collision geometry dependencies of participant (overlapping region)- spectator (quasiprojectile and quasitarget region) matter towards the symmetry energy using the isospin quantum molecular dynamical model are explored. Particularly, the difference of the number of nucleons in the overlapping zone to the quasi-projectile-target matter is found to be quite sensitive to the symmetry energy at semiperipheral geometries compared to the individual yield. It gives us a clue that this quantity can be used as a measure of isospin migration. Further, the yiel…
The neutron-proton effective $k$-mass splitting in asymmetric nucleonic matter of isospin asymmetry $δ$ and normal density is found to be $m^{*}_{n-p}\equiv(m^{*}_{n}-m^{*}_{p})/m=(0.41 \pm0.15)δ$ from analyzing globally 1088 sets of reaction and angular differential cross sections of proton elastic scattering on 130 targets with beam energies from 0.783 MeV to 200 MeV, and 1161 sets of data of neutron elastic scattering on 104 targets with beam energies from 0.05 MeV to 200 MeV within an isospin dependent non-relativistic optical potential model. It sets a useful reference for testing model p…
Thermalization process of nuclear matter in central fireball region of heavy-ion collisions is investigated by employing an extension model of Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck, namely the Van der Waals Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (VdWBUU) model. Temperature ($T$) is extracted by the quantum Fermion fluctuation approach and other thermodynamic quantities, such as density ($ρ$), entropy density ($s$), shear viscosity ($η$), isospin diffusivity ($D_{I}$) and heat conductivity ($κ$), are also deduced. The liquid-like and gas-like phase signs are discussed through the behavior of shear viscosity during …
Within a transport model, we study the neutron-proton differential transverse flow and its excitation function in central $^{132}$Sn + $^{124}$Sn collisions at 270 MeV/nucleon. To more accurately evaluate effects of the high-density behavior of symmetry energy \esym on this observable, we also consider the uncertainties of \esym around the saturation density $ρ_{0}$. It is shown that the neutron-proton differential transverse flow and its excitation function are mainly sensitive to the slope $L$ of \esym at $ρ_{0}$. However, the effects of low-density behavior of \esym on this observable shoul…
Fragmentation reactions induced on light target nuclei by protons and light nuclei of energies around 1 GeV/nucleon and below are studied with the latest Los Alamos Monte Carlo transport code MCNP6 and with its cascade-exciton model (CEM) and Los Alamos version of the quark-gluon string model (LAQGSM) event generators, version 03.03, used as stand-alone codes. Such reactions are involved in different applications, like cosmic-ray-induced single event upsets (SEU's), radiation protection, and cancer therapy with proton and ion beams, among others; therefore, it is important that MCNP6 simulates…
We develop a new approach to production of the spectator nucleons in the heavy ion collisions. The energy transfer to the spectator system is calculated using the Monte Carlo based on the updated version of our generator of configurations in colliding nuclei which includes a realistic account of short-range correlations in nuclei. The transferred energy distributions are calculated within the framework of the Glauber multiple scattering theory, taking into account all the individual inelastic and elastic collisions using an independent realistic calculation of the potential energy contribution…
Isoscaling and its relation to the symmetry energy in the fragmentation of excited residues produced at relativistic energies were studied in two experiments conducted at the GSI laboratory. The INDRA multidetector has been used to detect and identify light particles and fragments with Z <= 5 in collisions of 12C on 112,124Sn at incident energies of 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon. Isoscaling is observed, and the deduced parameters decrease with increasing centrality. Symmetry term coefficients, deduced within the statistical description of isotopic scaling, are near gamma = 25 MeV for peripheral …
We present the most accurate and complete data set for the analyzing power Ay(theta) in neutron-proton scattering. The experimental data were corrected for the effects of multiple scattering, both in the center detector and in the neutron detectors. The final data at En = 12.0 MeV deviate considerably from the predictions of nucleon-nucleon phase-shift analyses and potential models. The impact of the new data on the value of the charged pion-nucleon coupling constant is discussed in a model study.
An exponential dependence of the fragmentation cross-section on the average binding energy is observed and reproduced with a statistical model. The observed functional dependence is robust and allows the extraction of binding energies from measured cross-sections. From the systematics of 75,77,78,79Cu isotope cross-sections have been extracted. They are 636.94 +/- 0.40 MeV, 647.1 +/- 0.4 MeV, 651.6 +/- 0.4 MeV and 657.8 +/- 0.5 MeV, respectively. Specifically, the uncertainty of the binding energy of 75Cu is reduced from 980 keV (listed value in the 2003 mass table of Audi and Wapstra) to 400 …
The absolute cross section for the complete fusion and the total reaction cross section as a function of the charge of the heavy residue have been indirectly estimated for the reaction $^{18}$O+$^{12}$C at 16.7 MeV/nucleon. Data have been collected with the GARFIELD+RCo setup at LNL (Italy). The mbarn/count normalization factor has been extracted using the statistical model HF$\ell$ (Hauser-Feshbach light).
During therapeutic treatment with heavy ions like carbon, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular protons and alpha particles, are produced. To estimate the dose deposited into the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, an accurate prediction on the fluences of these secondary fragments is necessary. Nowadays, a very limited set of double di ffential carbon fragmentation cross sections are being measured in the energy range used in hadrontherapy (40 to 400 MeV/u). Therefore, new measurements are performed to determine the double di ffe…
This paper presents part of an internal LANL Progress Report on LAQGSM03.03, an upgrade of the Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model event generator for MCNPX/6 and MARS15 transport codes and on its validation and testing against a large variety of recent measurements. We present here an analysis with LAQGSM03.03 of the recent PHENIX mid-rapidity spectra of pi+, pi-, K+, K-, p, and p-bar produced in ultra-relativistic p + p interactions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV; GSI cross sections for the fragmentation of Pb208 at 1 GeV/nucleon on Be9; fragmentation cross sections of Si28 on H, C, Al,…
By using an experimental setup based on thin and thick double-sided microstrip silicon detectors, it has been possible to identify the fragmentation products due to the interaction of very high energy primary ions on different targets. Here we report total and partial cross-sections measured at GSI (Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung), Darmstadt, for 500 MeV/n energy $^{12}C$ beam incident on water (in flasks), polyethylene, lucite, silicon carbide, graphite, aluminium, copper, iron, tin, tantalum and lead targets. The results are compared to the predictions of GEANT4 (v4.9.4) and FLUKA (v1…
The emission angle and the transverse momentum distributions of projectile fragments produced in fragmentation of $^{56}$Fe on CH$_{2}$, C, and Al targets at 471 A MeV are measured. It is found that for the same target the average value and width of angular distribution decrease with increase of the projectile fragment charge, and for the same projectile fragment the average value of the distribution increases and the width of the distribution decreases with increasing the target charge number. The transverse momentum distribution of projectile fragment can be explained by a single Gaussian di…
We present a hypothesis that the anomaly in the folding angle distribution of electron-positron pairs, emitted in the decay of the excited levels of nucleus $^{8}$Be and $^{4}$He can be related to the cluster structure of the decaying state. Furthermore, we present a hypothesis that the potentially observed boson with re st mass $m_{X}$=17 MeV can mediate the nucleon-nucleon interaction at the low-energy regime of QCD, in particular in the weakly bound cluster state p+$^{7}$Li,$^{3}$H. We present a possible equations of state of symmetric nuclear matter corresponding to the vector meson mass $…
We have measured the Coulomb dissociation of 8B into 7Be and proton at 254 MeV/nucleon using a large-acceptance focusing spectrometer. The astrophysical S17 factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction at E{c.m.} = 0.25-2.78 MeV is deduced yielding S17(0)=20.6 \pm 1.2 (exp.) \pm 1.0 (theo.) eV-b. This result agrees with the presently adopted zero-energy S17 factor obtained in direct-reaction measurements and with the results of other Coulomb-dissociation studies performed at 46.5 and 51.2 MeV/nucleon.
A kinematically complete measurement was made of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B nuclei on a Pb target at 83 MeV/nucleon. The cross section was measured at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical S factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction. A first-order perturbation theory analysis of the reaction dynamics including E1, E2, and M1 transitions was employed to extract the E1 strength relevant to neutrino-producing reactions in the solar interior. By fitting the measured cross section from Erel = 130 keV to 400 keV, we find S17(0) = 17.8 (+1.4, -1.2) eV b.
We successfully identified a few final states in deuteron-deuteron scattering at 65 MeV/nucleon at KVI using a unique and advanced detection system called BINA. This facility enabled us to perform cross sections and polarization measurements with an excellent statistical and systematical precision. The analysis procedure and part of the results of the three-body break-up channel in deuteron-deuteron scattering at 65 MeV/nucleon are presented in this paper.
Fragmentation functions are determined for pions, kaons, and nucleons by a global analysis of charged-hadron production data in electron-positron annihilation. The optimum functions are obtained in both leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) of alpha_s. It is important that uncertainties of the fragmentation functions are estimated in this work by the Hessian method. We found that the uncertainties are large at small Q^2 and that they are generally reduced in the NLO in comparison with the LO ones. We supply a code for calculating the fragmentation functions and their uncertainties…
The binary dissipative channels are characterized by the presence of two main fragments in the exit channel. They have been studied in the 107Ag+58Ni reaction at 52 MeV/nucleon of bombarding energy. For that purpose a modified version of the INDRA multidetector has been used in conjunction with a part of the CHIMERA multidetector. Preliminary results on the excitation energy and intrinsic angular momentum of the quasi-projectile are reported and compared to a dynamical calculation.
Measured values of the differential cross section for pion-nucleon charge exchange are presented at momenta 148, 174, 188, 212, 238, 271, 298, and 323 MeV/c, a region dominated by the Delta resonance. Complete angular distributions were obtained using the Crystal Ball detector at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Statistical uncertainties of the differential cross sections are typically 2-6%, exceptions being the results at the lowest momentum and at the most forward measurements of the five lowest momenta. We estimate the systematic uncertaint…
Fragment partitions of fragmenting hot nuclei produced in central and semiperipheral collisions have been compared in the excitation energy region 4-10 MeV per nucleon where radial collective expansion takes place. It is shown that, for a given total excitation energy per nucleon, the amount of radial collective energy fixes the mean fragment multiplicity. It is also shown that, at a given total excitation energy per nucleon, the different properties of fragment partitions are completely determined by the reduced fragment multiplicity (fragment multiplicity normalized to the source size). Free…
Nuclear fragments emitted at 3.5 degrees in 12C fragmentation at 0.6 GeV/nucleon have been measured. The spectra obtained are used for testing the predictions of four ion-ion interaction models: INCL++, BC, LAQGSM03.03 and QMD as well as for the comparison with the analytical parametrization in the framework of thermodynamical picture of fragmentation.
The particle-antiparticle asymmetries of $Λ$ production in 250 GeV/c $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, and $p$ --nucleon collisions are studied with two model parametrizations of quark to $Λ$ fragmentation functions. It is shown that the available data can be qualitatively explained by the calculated results in both the quark-diquark model and a pQCD based analysis of fragmentation functions. The differences in the two model predictions are significant for $K^{\pm}$ beams, and high precision measurements of the asymmetries with detailed $x_F$ and $P_T$ information can discriminate between different predic…
Jets containing a prompt J$/ψ$ meson are studied in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, using the CMS detector at the LHC. Jets are selected to be in the transverse momentum range of 30 $\lt$ $p_\mathrm{T}$ $\lt$ 40 GeV. The J$/ψ$ yield in these jets is evaluated as a function of the jet fragmentation variable $z$, the ratio of the J$/ψ$ $p_\mathrm{T} $ to the jet $p_\mathrm{T}$. The nuclear modification factor, $R_\mathrm{AA}$, is then derived by comparing the yield in lead-lead collisions to the corresponding expectation based on proton-proton data, a…
Elemental fragmentation cross sections (EFCSs) of stable and unstable nuclides have been investigated with various projectile-target combinations at a wide range of incident energies. These data are critical to constrain and develop the theoretical reaction models and to study the propagation of galactic cosmic rays (GCR). In this work, we present a new EFCS measurement for $^{28}$Si on carbon at 218~MeV/nucleon performed at the Heavy Ion Research Facility (HIRFL-CSR) complex in Lanzhou. The impact of the target thickness has been well corrected to derive an accurate EFCS. Our present results …
