We present a hypothesis that the anomaly in the folding angle distribution of electron-positron pairs, emitted in the decay of the excited levels of nucleus $^{8}$Be and $^{4}$He can be related to the cluster structure of the decaying state. Furthermore, we present a hypothesis that the potentially observed boson with re st mass $m_{X}$=17 MeV can mediate the nucleon-nucleon interaction at the low-energy regime of QCD, in particular in the weakly bound cluster state p+$^{7}$Li,$^{3}$H. We present a possible equations of state of symmetric nuclear matter corresponding to the vector meson mass $m_{v}$=17 MeV, obtained using relativistic mean field theory of nuclear force, QHD-I in particular, with physically relevant incompessibility K$_{0}$=240-260 MeV and the values of couplings $g_{v}$, $g_{s}$ lower than unity. Based on concepts of chiral symmetry breaking, we show that reduction of the rest mass of pseudoscalar particle from physical value $m_π$=135 MeV to $m_{X}$=17 MeV is equivalent to reduction of the quark mass from dynamical value around 310 MeV down to current quark mass around 5 MeV ($\frac{m_{X}^2} {m_{q,curr}} \simeq \frac{m_π^2} {m_{q,dyn}}$). Corresponding version of Goldberger-Treiman relation leads to the value of coupling close to the results from relativistic mean field theory of nuclear force. Both model approaches thus point towards apparent restoration of chiral symmetry in nucleon-nucleon interaction at large distances, possibly via bounce into false instanton vacuum. Observation of boson with rest mass $m_{X}$=17 MeV in the decay of high lying excited states of $^{8}$Be and $^{4}$He can possibly resolve one of the longest lasting open questions in nuclear physics.
The contribution of axial anomaly to charge symmetry breaking in pion-nucleon coupling constants is calculated within instanton model for QCD vacuum. It has been demonstrated that the contribution is large and allows to explain Nolen-Schiffer anomaly.
We explore the possibility that the excess neutral and charged current events seen by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA at large x and Q^2 could arise from a hard charm component of the nucleon. While the symmetric intrinsic charm hypothesis is unable to account for the HERA anomaly, a non-symmetric charm distribution generated non-perturbatively, for which c-bar is much harder than c, can produce significant enhancement of cross sections at the HERA kinematics.
We show a novel charge structure of baryons in electromagnetic field due to the chiral anomaly. A key connection is to treat baryons as solitons of mesons. We use Skyrmions to calculate the charge distributions in a single nucleon and find an additional charge. We also perform calculations of charge distribution for classical multi-baryons with B=2, 3,...,8 and 17; they show amusing charge distributions.
We propose new physical processes based on the axial vector anomaly and described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term that couples the photon, Z-boson, and the omega-meson. The interaction takes the form of a pseudo-Chern-Simons term, $\sim ε_{μνρσ}ω^μZ^νF^{ρσ}$. This term induces neutrino-photon interactions at finite baryon density via the coupling of the Z-boson to neutrinos. These interactions may be detectable in various laboratory and astrophysical arenas. The new interactions may account for the MiniBooNE excess. They also produce a competitive contribution to neutron star cooling at tempera…
We consider the extended SU(3) Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model with explicit vector couplings in the presence of external fields. We study the chiral anomaly in this model and its implications on the properties of the nucleon described as a chiral soliton of three valence quarks bounded in mesonic background fields. For the model to reproduce the QCD anomaly it is necessary to subtract suitable local and polynomial counterterms in the external and dynamical vector and axial-vector fields. We compute the counterterms explicitly in a vector gauge invariant regularization, and obtain modifications t…
In this letter, we have taken a particular Lagrangian, which was introduced to resolve U(1) problem, as an effective QCD Lagrangian, and have derived a formula of the quark content of the nucleon spin. The difference between quark content of the proton (ΔΣ_p) and that of the neutron (ΔΣ_n) is evaluated by this formula. Neglecting the higher-order isospin corrections, this formula can reduce to Efremov's results in the large N_c limit.
Mesonic and nucleon fluctuation effects are investigated in medium. We couple the nucleon field to the $2+1$ flavor meson model and investigate the finite temperature and density behavior of the system, in particular, the axial anomaly function. Somewhat contrary to earlier expectations we find that it tends to strengthen at finite density. At lower temperatures nucleon density fluctuations can cause a relative difference in the $U_A(1)$ axial anomaly of about $20\%$. This has important consequences on the mesonic spectra, especially on the $η-η'$ system, as we observe no drop in the $η'$ mass…
Modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials, which accurately fit the nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts, contain terms which break isospin symmetry. The effects of these symmetry violating terms on the bulk properties of nuclear matter are investigated. The predictions of the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) terms are compared with the Nolen-Schiffer (NS) anomaly regarding the energies of neighboring mirror nuclei. We find that, for a quantitative explanation of the NS anomaly, it is crucial to include CSB in partial waves with $L>0$ (besides $^1S_0$) as derived from a microscopic model for CSB…
We present a parametrization of the observed enhancement in the transverse electron quasielastic (QE) response function for nucleons bound in carbon as a function of the square of the four momentum transfer (Q2) in terms of a correction to the magnetic form factors of bound nucleons. The parametrization should also be applicable to the transverse cross section in neutrino scattering. If the transverse enhancement originates from meson exchange currents (MEC), then it is theoretically expected that any enhancement in the longitudinal or axial contributions is small. We present the predictions o…
We investigate meson and nucleon dynamics at finite baryon density and temperature by coupling the nucleon field and the omega meson to the three-flavor linear sigma model and calculate hadronic properties around the nuclear liquid-gas transition. We apply the functional renormalization group method, and find that mesonic fluctuations increase the strength of the coefficient of the $U_A(1)$ breaking determinant operator as a function of the chiral condensate. As a consequence, we find that the actual value of the anomaly increases discontinuously at the first order nuclear liquid-gas transitio…
The nucleon properties and structure should be modified by short-range correlations (SRC) among nucleons. By analyzing SRC ratio data, we extract the mass of nucleon in the SRC pair and the expected number of pn-SRC pairs in deuterium, under the assumption that the SRC nucleon mass is universal in different nuclei. The nucleon mass of a two-nucleon SRC pair is $m_{\text{SRC}}=852\pm 18$ MeV, and the number of pn-SRC pairs in deuterium is $n^{\text{d}}_{\text{SRC}}=0.021\pm 0.005$. The mass deficit of the strongly overlapping nucleon can be explained by the trace anomaly contribution to the mas…
Kaon photoproduction on the deuteron is studied with respect to a specific two-body contribution, namely a pion mediated production process, besides other final state interaction contributions from kaon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon scattering. In this process, a pion is first photoproduced on one nucleon and then interacts with the spectator nucleon in a strangeness exchange reaction leading to a kaon and a hyperon. A sizeable effect from this pion mediated contribution is found, considerably larger than the previously studied hyperon-nucleon rescattering, whereas kaon-nucleon rescattering is m…
There is a well known anomaly between the value of the Fermi decay constant extracted from super-allowed Fermi beta-decay of nuclear isotriplets and that required by unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. This discrepancy remains at the level of a few tenths of a percent after the most rigorous investigation of conventional nuclear and radiative corrections. Within the framework of the quark-meson coupling model of nuclear matter, which has been previously applied successfully to phenomena such as nuclear saturation and nuclear charge symmetry violation, we show that it is possible…
We study the modification of the nucleon nucleon interaction in a nuclear medium in the scalar isoscalar channel, mediated by the exchange of two correlated ($σ$ channel) or uncorrelated pions. For this purpose we use a standard approach for the renormalization of pions in nuclei. The corrections obtained for the $NN$ interaction in the medium in this channel are of the order of 20% of the free one in average, and the consideration of short range correlations plays an important role in providing these moderate changes. Yet, the corrections are sizable enough to suggest further studies of the s…
The neutron-proton mass difference in finite nuclei is studied in the framework of a medium-modified Skyrme model. The possible interplay between the effective nucleon mass in finite nuclei and the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly is discussed. In particular, we find that a correct description of the properties of mirror nuclei leads to a stringent restriction of possible modifications of the nucleon's effective mass in nuclei.
The scattering amplitude of the pion-nucleon elastic scattering is calculated by the lowest-order approximation of the perturbative expansion with the non-perturbative term. The self-energy of nucleon is determined so as to give the scattering parameters of the $S$-wave. It is shown that the scattering process mediated by the $σ$-meson plays a decisive role together with the pseudovector pion interaction.
Scalars that carry lepton number can help mediate would-be lepton-number-violating processes, such as neutrinoless double $β$ decay or lepton-scattering-mediated nucleon-antinucleon conversion. Here we show that such new scalars can also solve the anomaly in precision determinations of the fine-structure constant $α$ from atom interferometry and from the electron's anomalous magnetic moment, $a_e \equiv (g-2)_e/2$, by reducing $|a_e|$. Study of the phenomenological constraints on these solutions favor a doubly-charged scalar with mass below the GeV scale. Significant constraints arise from the…
Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) claims that the major source of the nucleon invariant mass is not the Higgs mechanism but the trace anomaly in QCD energy momentum tensor. Although experimental and theoretical results support such conclusion, a direct demonstration is still absent. We present the first Lattice QCD calculation of the quark and gluon trace anomaly contributions to the hadron masses, using the overlap fermion on the 2+1 flavor dynamical Domain wall quark ensemble at $m_π=340$ MeV and lattice spacing $a=$0.1105 fm. The result shows that the gluon trace anomaly contributes to most of t…
The asymmetries of both light-flavor antiquark $\bar{d}(x)-\bar{u}(x)$ and strange-antistrange $s(x)-\bar{s}(x)$ distributions of the nucleon sea are considered with more details in the effective chiral quark model. We find that the asymmetric distribution of light-flavor antiquarks $\bar{d}(x)-\bar{u}(x)$ matches the experiment data well and that the asymmetry of strange and antistrange distributions can bring about 60-100% correction to the NuTeV anomaly of $\sin^{2}θ_{w}$, which are three standard deviations from the world average value measured in other electroweak processes. The results o…
The neutron-proton mass difference in (isospin asymmetric) nuclear matter and finite nuclei is studied in the framework of a medium-modified Skyrme model. The proposed effective Lagrangian incorporates both the medium influence of the surrounding nuclear environment on the single nucleon properties and an explicit isospin-breaking effect in the mesonic sector. Energy-dependent charged and neutral pion optical potentials in the s- and p-wave channels are included as well. The present approach predicts that the neutron-proton mass difference is mainly dictated by its strong part and that it mark…
We examine the effect of isospin-violating meson-nucleon coupling constants and of $π$-$η$ mixing on the binding-energy differences of mirror nuclei in a model that possesses no contribution from $ρ$-$ω$ mixing. The ${}^{3}$He-${}^{3}$H binding-energy difference is computed in a nonrelativistic approach using a realistic wave function. We find the ${}^{3}$He-${}^{3}$H binding-energy difference very sensitive to the short-distance behavior of the nucleon-nucleon potential. We conclude that for the typically hard Bonn form factors such models can not account for the observed binding-energy diffe…
A neutron or proton excess in nuclei leads to an isovector-vector mean-field which, through its coupling to the quarks in a bound nucleon, implies a shift in the quark distributions with respect to the Bjorken scaling variable. We show that this result leads to an additional correction to the NuTeV measurement of sin^2(Theta_W). The sign of this correction is largely model independent and acts to reduce their result. Explicit calculation within a covariant and confining Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model predicts that this vector field correction accounts for approximately two-thirds of the NuTeV anoma…
We show that coalescence of nucleons emitted prior to thermalization in highly excited nuclei can explain the anomaly of kinetic energies of helium clusters. A new coalescence algorithm has been included into the statistical approach to nuclear reactions formerly used to describe intermediate mass fragment production.
In the presence of P-violating interactions, the exchange of vector bosons between electrons and nucleons induces parity-nonconserving (PNC) effects in atoms and molecules, while the exchange of vector bosons between nucleons induces anapole moments of nuclei. We perform calculations of such vector-mediated PNC effects in Cs, Ba$^+$, Yb, Tl, Fr and Ra$^+$ using the same relativistic many-body approaches as in earlier calculations of standard-model PNC effects, but with the long-range operator of the weak interaction. We calculate nuclear anapole moments due to vector boson exchange using a sim…
Making use of the fact that the collective modes associated with the spontaneous (static and dynamic) violation of gauge invariance in atomic nuclei (pairing rotations and pairing vibrations) are amenable to a simple, quite accurate nuclear structure description (BCS and QRPA respectively), it is possible to quantitatively test the reaction mechanism which is at the basis of two-nucleon transfer reactions, specific probe of pairing in nuclei. With the help of the static and dynamic mean field spectroscopic amplitudes, taking into account successive and simultaneous transfer channels properly c…
We review the chiral variant and invariant components of nucleon masses and its consequence on the chiral restoration in extreme conditions, neutron star matter in particular. We consider a model of linear realization of chiral symmetry with the nucleon parity doublet structure that permits the chiral invariant mass, $m_0$, for positive and negative parity nucleons. Nuclear matter is constructed with the parity doublet nucleon model coupled to scalar fields $σ$, vector fields $(ω, ρ)$, and to mesons with strangeness through the U(1)$_A$ anomaly. In models with large $m_0$, the nucleon mass is …
Coulomb displacement energies, i.e., the differences between the energies of corresponding nuclear states in mirror nuclei, are evaluated using recent models for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction. These modern NN potentials account for breaking of isospin symmetry and reproduce $pp$ and $pn$ phase shifts accurately. The predictions by these new potentials for the binding of $^{16}O$ are calculated. A particular focus of our study are effects due to nuclear correlations and charge-symmetry breaking (CSB). We find that the CSB terms in the modern NN interactions substantially reduce the discr…
