The simulation of granular media is usually done either with event-driven codes that treat collisions as instantaneous but have difficulty with very dense packings, or with molecular dynamics methods that approximate rigid grains using a stiff viscoelastic spring. There is a little-known method that combines several collision events into a single timestep in order to retain the instantaneous collisions of event-driven dynamics but also be able to handle dense packings. However, it is poorly characterized as to its regime of validity and failure modes. We present a modification of this method to reduce the introduction of overlap error, and test it using the problem of 2D granular Couette flow, a densely packed system that has been well-characterized by previous work. We find that this method can successfully replicate the results of previous work up to the point of jamming, and that it can do so a factor of 10 faster than comparable MD methods.
A possible origin of unusual temperature behavior of transport coefficients observed in densely packed polycrystalline CaAl_{2} compound [M. Ausloos et al., J. Appl. Phys. 96, 7338 (2004)] is discussed, including a power-like dependence of resistivity with $ρ\propto T^{-3/4}$ and N-like form of the thermopower. All these features are found to be in good agreement with the Shklovskii-Efros localization scenario assuming polaron-mediated hopping processes controlled by the Debye energy.
The magnetic properties of densely packed magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) assemblies are investigated from Monte Carlo simulations. The case of iron oxide nanoparticles is considered as a typical example of MNP. The main focus is put on particle size and size polydispersity influences on the magnetization curve. The particles are modeled as uniformly magnetized spheres isolated one from each other by a non magnetic layer representing the organic coating. A comparison with recent experimental results on $γ-$Fe$_2$O$_3$ powder samples differing by their size is given.
The magnetization curves of densely packed single domain magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in the framework of an effective one spin model. The particles whose size polydispersity is taken into account are arranged in spherical clusters and both dipole dipole interactions (DDI) and magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) are included in the total energy. Having in mind the special case of spinel ferrites of intrinsic cubic symmetry, combined cubic and uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropies are considered with different configurations for the orientations of th…
In this work, we study the realization of realistic polarization transformers formed by long metallic helices. To this end, we propose a new homogenization model to characterize the propagation of electromagnetic waves in medium formed by infinitely long helices. We derive approximate analytical expressions for the effective permittivity, effective permeability and the magnetoelectric tensor of the composite material, taking into account the effects of spatial dispersion. We apply the new homogenization model to characterize novel linear-to-circular polarization transformers. Our results show …
We measure the two-point density correlations and Voronoi cell distributions of cyclically sheared granular spheres obtained with a fluorescence technique and compare them with random packing of frictionless spheres. We find that the radial distribution function $g(r)$ is captured by the Percus-Yevick equation for initial volume fraction $ϕ=0.59$. However, small but systematic deviations are observed because of the splitting of the second peak as $ϕ$ is increased towards random close packing. The distribution of the Voronoi free volumes deviates from postulated $Γ$ distributions, and the orien…
All hard, convex shapes are conjectured by Ulam to pack more densely than spheres, which have a maximum packing fraction of ϕ = π/\sqrt18 ~ 0.7405. For many shapes, simple lattice packings easily surpass this packing fraction. For regular tetrahedra, this conjecture was shown to be true only very recently; an ordered arrangement was obtained via geometric construction with ϕ = 0.7786, which was subsequently compressed numerically to ϕ = 0.7820. Here we show that tetrahedra pack much better than this, and in a completely unexpected way. Following a conceptually different approach, using thermod…
It is well known that the classical energetically consistent micropolar model has limits in simulating the frequency band structure of packed granular materials (see Merkel et al., 2011). It is here shown that if a standard continualization of the difference equation of motion of the discrete model is carried out, an equivalent micropolar continuum is obtained which is able to accurately simulate the optical branches of the discrete model. Nevertheless, this homogenized continuum presents non-positive defined elastic potential energy, a deficiency that limits the reliability of the model and i…
Loosely packed granular materials are intensively studied nowadays. Electrical and thermal transport properties should reflect the granular structure as well as intrinsic properties. We have compacted crystalline $CaAl$ based metallic grains and studied the electrical resistivity and the thermoelectric power as a function of temperature ($T$) from 15 to 300K. Both properties show three regimes as a function of temperature. It should be pointed out : (i) The electrical resistivity continuously decreases between 15 and 235 K (ii) with various dependences, e.g. $\simeq$ $T^{-3/4}$ at low $T$, whi…
Single walled carbon nanotubes exhibit advanced electrical and surface properties useful for high performance nanoelectronics. Important to future manufacturing of nanotube circuits is large scale assembly of SWNTs into aligned forms. Despite progress in assembly and oriented synthesis, pristine SWNTs in aligned and close-packed form remain elusive and needed for high current, speed and density devices through collective operations of parallel SWNTs. Here, we develop a Langmuir Blodgett method achieving monolayers of aligned SWNTs with dense packing, central to which is a non covalent polymer …
The effect of the anisotropy on the elastoplastic response of two dimensional packed samples of polygons is investigated here, using molecular dynamics simulation. We show a correlation between fabric coefficients, characterizing the anisotropy of the granular skeleton, and the anisotropy of the elastic response. We also study the anisotropy induced by shearing on the subnetwork of the sliding contacts. This anisotropy provides an explanation to some features of the plastic deformation of granular media.

A hybrid helical structure of equal-sized hard spheres in cylindrical confinement was discovered as a 'by-product' of the recently developed sequential deposition approach [Physical Review E 84, 050302(R) (2011)] for constructing the densest possible packings of such systems. Unlike the conventional triple-helix structure where its three strands of spheres are packed densely to form triads of close-packed, mutually touching spheres, in this novel helical phase only two of its three strands of spheres are packed in this densest arrangement and the overall structure resembles a hybrid of the sin…
Granular materials react to shear stresses differently than do ordinary fluids. Rather than deforming uniformly, materials such as dry sand or cohesionless powders develop shear bands: narrow zones containing large relative particle motion leaving adjacent regions essentially rigid[1,2,3,4,5]. Since shear bands mark areas of flow, material failure and energy dissipation, they play a crucial role for many industrial, civil engineering and geophysical processes[6]. They also appear in related contexts, such as in lubricating fluids confined to ultra-thin molecular layers[7]. Detailed information…
We model two-dimensional systems of granular aggregates confined between two planes and demonstrate that at a critical grain volume fraction an abrupt rigidity transition occurs. This transition is observed both in static and shear tests. The grain volume fraction at which the transition occurs, $ν_c$, decreases with increasing friction between the grains. Densely packed grains, with a volume fraction $ν> ν_c$, display an elastic-plastic rheology. Dilute packings, with $ν<ν_c$, display gas-like characteristics. Packings with $ν=ν_c$ display phase coexistance. It is shown that when volume fract…
For the binary discs packed in two dimensions, the packing fraction of disc assembly becomes lower than that of the monodisperse system when the size ratio is close to unity. We show that the suppressed packing fraction is caused by an increase of the adjacent neighbours with long bonds where the adjacent neighbours is defined on the basis of the Laguerre (radical) tessellation. For the poly-disperse systems in two and three dimensions, the packing fraction is shown to have a minimuma as a function of the poly-dispersity. Percolation process in the densely packed discs and spheres is also stud…
For the last 50 years, the flow of a granular material through an aperture has been intensely studied in gravity-driven vertical systems (e.g. silos and hoppers). Nevertheless, in many industrial applications, grains are horizontally transported at constant velocity, lying on conveyor belts or floating on the surface of flowing liquids. Unlike fluid flows, that are controlled by the pressure, granular flow is not sensitive to the local pressure but rather to the local velocity of the grains at the outlet. We can also expect the flow rate to depend on the local density of the grains. Indeed, ve…
Many clays, soils, biological tissues, foods, and coatings are shrinkable, granular materials: they are composed of packed, hydrated grains that shrink when dried. In many cases, these packings crack during drying, critically hindering applications. However, while cracking has been widely studied for bulk gels and packings of non-shrinkable grains, little is known about how packings of shrinkable grains crack. Here, we elucidate how grain shrinkage alters cracking during drying. Using experiments with model shrinkable hydrogel beads, we show that differential shrinkage can dramatically alter c…
We explore the consequences of the excluded volume interaction of hard spheres at high densities and present a theory for excited granular materials. We first demonstrate that, in the presence of gravity, the granular density crosses over from Boltzmann to Fermi statistics, when temperature is decreased in the weak excitation limit. Comparisons of numerical simulations with our predictions concerning the scaling behavior of temperature with agitation frequency, gravity and particle-diameter show satisfying agreement. Next, within the framework of the Enskog theory of hard spheres, we interpret…
