This paper introduces a list of observations related to the beam-beam interaction that were collected over the first years of LHC proton physics operation (2010-12). Beam-beam related effects not only have been extensively observed and recorded, but have also shaped the operation of the LHC for high-intensity proton running in a number of ways: the construction of the filling scheme, the choice of luminosity levelling techniques, measures to mitigate instabilities, and the choice of settings for improving performance (e.g. to reduce losses), among others.
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has been in operation since 2000. Over the past decade, the luminosity in the polarized proton (p-p) operations has increased by more than one order of magnitude. The maximum total beam-beam tune shift with two collisions has reached 0.018. The beam-beam interaction leads to large tune spread, emittance growth, and short beam and luminosity lifetimes. In this article, we review the beam-beam observations during the previous RHIC p-p runs. The mechanism for particle loss is presented. The intra-beam scattering (IBS) co…
We report the results of observations of H- beam instabilities at the Fermilab Linac. By intentionally creating "high" background pressure with different gases in the 750 keV transport line we observed coherent transverse beam oscillations. The minimal pulse length required to observe oscillations and the frequency of oscillations are functions of pressure and mass of the background gas. The oscillations are present in both transverse planes and very quickly reach saturation in amplitude growth. The observed characteristics of beam oscillations are in quantitative agreement with "fast beam-ion…
The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported. The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing strengths of order Tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was reduced by a factor of 2.0 +/- 0.3 by the plasma. The longitudinal beam envelope was measured and compared with numerical calculations.
There were four presentations given during the session 'Beam-beam experience in hadron colliders', reporting the beam-beam observations in SPS [1], Tevatron [2], RHIC [3] and HERA [4]. Presentations were followed by discussions. Below we summarize the major observations, findings and results.
Commissioning at the SCRF accelerator at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) Facility has included the implementation of a versatile bunch-length monitor located after the 4-dipole chicane bunch compressor for electron beam energies of 20-50 MeV and integrated charges in excess of 10 nC. The team has initially used a Hamamatsu C5680 synchroscan streak camera to assess the effects of space charge on the electron beam bunch lengths. An Al-coated Si screen was used to generate optical transition radiation (OTR) resulting from the beam's interaction with the screen. The chicane …
We report observation of a strong wakefield induced energy modulation in an energy-chirped electron bunch passing through a dielectric-lined waveguide. This modulation can be effectively converted into a spatial modulation forming micro-bunches with a periodicity of 0.5 - 1 picosecond, hence capable of driving coherent THz radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.
In this paper we compare experimental observations and theory of radiation emission from a microbunched beam with microbunching wavefront tilt with respect to the direction of motion. The theory refers to the work [1], which predicts, in this case, exponential suppression of coherent radiation along the kicked direction. The observations refer to a recent experiment performed at the LCLS [2,3], where a microbunched beam was kicked by a bend and sent to a radiator undulator. The experiment resulted in the emission of strong coherent radiation that had its maximum along the kicked direction of m…
This paper reports a start-to-end study of suppression of stored beam oscillation at PLS-II. We report that the fast counter-kicker implemented in PLS-II suppressed vertical oscillation of the stored beam. During top-up injection in the magnetic spectroscopy beamline of PLS-II, the stored beam oscillation was suppressed by a factor of nine, and flux was improved by a factor of three.
Strong effect of beam coherent scattering ("reflection") in a field of bent crystal is observed in crystal collimation experiments performed with heavy ions and protons at RHIC and started at Tevatron collider. Detailed simulation using Monte Carlo code CATCH is done in order to understand the observations and relate them to the physics of beam coherent scattering in crystal. A.M. Taratin and S.A. Vorobiev predicted the effect of beam "volume reflection" in bent crystals in 1987. The presented data is the first manifestation of this new physical phenomenon in experiment.
At the Fermilab Tevatron collider, we studied the feasibility of suppressing the antiproton head-on beam-beam tune spread using a magnetically confined 5-keV electron beam with Gaussian transverse profile overlapping with the circulating beam. When electron cooling of antiprotons was applied in regular Tevatron operations, the nonlinear head-on beam-beam effect on antiprotons was small. Therefore, we first focused on the operational aspects, such as beam alignment and stability, and on fundamental observations of tune shifts, tune spreads, lifetimes, and emittances. We also attempted two speci…
Beam loading is the phenomenon which limits the charge and the beam quality in plasma based accelerators. An experimental study conducted with a laser-plasma accelerator is presented. Beam loading manifests itself through the decrease of the beam energy, the reduction of dark current and the increase of the energy spread for large beam charge. 3D PIC simulations are compared to the experimental results and confirm the effects of beam loading. It is found that, in our experimental conditions, the trapped electron beams generate decelerating fields on the order of 1 GV/m/pC and that beam loading…
This paper describes two distinct effects observed during the operation of the LHC in 2012: first, the impacts on beam parameter evolution of the end-of-squeeze instabilities encountered in the second half of the 2012 run; and, second, the very reproducible loss pattern of Beam 1 observed (while a similar pattern was negligible, if present at all, for Beam 2). Statistics for 2012 are provided and the impact on luminosity production is highlighted.
The effects of electron clouds on positively-charged beams have been an active area of research in recent years at particle accelerators around the world. Transverse beam-size blow-up due to electron clouds has been observed in some machines, and is considered to be a major limiting factor in the development of higher-current, higher-luminosity electron-positron colliders. The leading proposed mechanism for beam blow-up is the excitation of a fast head-tail instability due to short-range wakes within the electron cloud. We present here observations of betatron oscillation sidebands in bunch-by…
The general question of how a beam becomes unstable has been one of the fundamental research topics among beam and accelerator physicists for several decades. In this study, we revisited the general problem of linear beam stability in periodic focusing systems by applying the concepts of Krein signature and band structure. We numerically calculated the eigenvalues and other associated characteristics of one-period maps, and discussed the stability properties of single-particle motions with skew quadrupoles and envelope perturbations in high-intensity beams on an equal footing. In particular, a…
Effects of electromagnetic interactions of colliding bunches in the Tevatron had a variety of manifestations in beam dynamics presenting vast opportunities for development of simulation models and tools. In this paper the computer code for simulation of weak-strong beam-beam effects in hadron colliders is described. We report the collider operational experience relevant to beam-beam interactions, explain major effects limiting the collider performance and compare results of observations and measurements with simulations.
Observations of single bunch beam-beam coherent modes during dedicated experiments in the LHC are presented. Their role in standard operation for physics is discussed and, in particular, candidates of beam-beam coherent mode driven unstable by the machine impedance are presented.

Plasma wakefield acceleration (PWFA) is a novel acceleration technique with promising prospects for both particle colliders and light sources. However, PWFA research has so far been limited to a few large-scale accelerator facilities world-wide. Here, we present first results on plasma wakefield generation using electron beams accelerated with a 100-TW-class Ti:Sa laser. Due to their ultrashort duration and high charge density, the laser-accelerated electron bunches are suitable to drive plasma waves at electron densities in the order of $10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$. We capture the beam-induced plasma …
As a new-generation light source, free-electron lasers (FELs) provide high-brightness X-ray pulses at the angstrom-femtosecond space and time scales. The fundamental physics behind the FEL is the interaction between an electromagnetic wave and a relativistic electron beam in an undulator, which consists of hundreds or thousands of dipole magnets with an alternating magnetic field. Here, we report the first observation of the laser-beam interaction in a pure dipole magnet, in which the electron beam energy modulation with 40-keV amplitude and 266-nm period is measured. We demonstrate that such …
The generation of the ultra-bright beams required by modern accelerators and drivers of free-electron lasers (FELs) has generally relied on chicane-based bunch compressions that often result in the microbunching instability. Following compression, spectral enhancements extend even into the visible wavelengths through the longitudinal space charge (LSC) impedances. Optical transition radiation (OTR) screens have been extensively used for transverse electron beam size measurements for the bright beams, but the presence of such longitudinal microstructures (microbunching) in the electron beam or …
Using the silicon strip detector of the CLEO experiment operating at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR), we have observed that the horizontal size of the luminous region decreases in the presence of the beam-beam interaction from what is expected without the beam-beam interaction. The dependence on the bunch current agrees with the prediction of the dynamic beta effect. This is the first direct observation of the effect.
The first photon beam was successfully produced by laser Compton backscattering at the LEPS2 beamline, which was newly constructed at SPring-8 for the purpose to increase the beam intensity one order of magnitude more than that of the LEPS experiments and to achieve the large acceptance coverage with high resolution detectors. The BGOegg electromagnetic calorimeter with associated detectors are being set up at the LEPS2 experimental building for the physics programs, including the searches for $η$'-bound nuclei and highly excited baryon resonances. In parallel to the BGOegg experiments, the LE…
This report contains the Proceedings of the ICFA Mini-Workshop on Beam-Beam Effects in Hadron Colliders held at CERN from 18 to 22 March 2013. It was the first of its kind after the successful start of LHC operation where a vast amount of beam-beam observations emerged. It brought together 58 international experts in the field and the purpose of this workshop was to review the present knowledge in the fields of beam-beam theory, simulations and observations. In the summary session the participants acknowledged the enormous progress made in recent years and the introduction of new concepts and …
We report the first observations of beam losses due to bound-free pair production at the interaction point of a heavy-ion collider. This process is expected to be a major luminosity limit for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) when it operates with 208Pb82+ ions because the localized energy deposition by the lost ions may quench superconducting magnet coils. Measurements were performed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) during operation with 100 GeV/nucleon 63Cu29+ ions. At RHIC, the rate, energy and magnetic field are low enough so that magnet quenching is not an issue. The hadronic s…
