We study gravitational properties of vacuum energy by erecting a geometry on the stress-energy tensor of vacuum, matter and radiation. Postulating that the gravitational effects of matter and radiation can be formulated by an appropriate modification of the spacetime connection, we obtain varied geometro-dynamical equations which properly comprise the usual gravitational field equations with, however, Planck-suppressed, non-local, higher-dimensional additional terms. The prime novelty brought about by the formalism is that, the vacuum energy does act not as the cosmological constant but as the source of the gravitational constant. The formalism thus deafens the cosmological constant problem by channeling vacuum energy to gravitational constant. Nevertheless, quantum gravitational effects, if any, restore the problem via the graviton and graviton-matter loops, and the mechanism proposed here falls short of taming such contributions to cosmological constant.
For type IIB supergravity with a running axio-dilaton, we construct bulk solutions which admit a cosmological background metric of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker type. These solutions include both a dark radiation term in the bulk as well as a four-dimensional (boundary) cosmological constant, while gravity at the boundary remains non-dynamical. We holographically calculate the stress-energy tensor, showing that it consists of two contributions: The first one, generated by the dark radiation term, leads to the thermal fluid of N = 4 SYM theory, while the second, the conformal anomaly, originates f…
We show that in general holographic stress tensor may contain a new term of divergence of a spacelike unit normal acceleration. Then, it is shown that in contrast to previous descriptions, a new stress tensor for Kerr-AdS solutions can be a traceless one. Interestingly, this prescription entails a local failure on the IR-UV connection.
We make precise the heretofore ambiguous statement that anisotropic stress is a sign of a modification of gravity. We show that in cosmological solutions of very general classes of models extending gravity --- all scalar-tensor theories (Horndeski), Einstein-Aether models and bimetric massive gravity --- a direct correspondence exists between perfect fluids apparently carrying anisotropic stress and a modification in the propagation of gravitational waves. Since the anisotropic stress can be measured in a model-independent manner, a comparison of the behavior of gravitational waves from cosmol…
The effective anisotropic stress or gravitational slip $η=-Φ/Ψ$ is a key variable in the characterisation of the physical origin of the dark energy, as it allows to test for a non-minimal coupling of the dark sector to gravity in the Jordan frame. It is however important to use a fully model-independent approach when measuring $η$ to avoid introducing a theoretical bias into the results. In this paper we forecast the precision with which future large surveys can determine $η$ in a way that only relies on directly observable quantities. In particular, we do not assume anything concerning the in…
We study the effective stress-energy tensor induced by cosmological inhomogeneity in $f(R)=R+cR^2$ and equivalent scalar-tensor theories, motivated both by models of early universe inflation and by phenomenological alternative cosmologies to the standard $Λ$-CDM. We use Green and Wald's framework for averaging over classical fluctuations of short-wavelength $λ$. By ensuring that the leading non-linear terms from the fluctuations of the Einstein terms and the corrections both contribute in the formal limit as $λ\to0$, we derive a diffeomorphism invariant effective stress-energy tensor whose tra…
We compute the correlation functions of 3 and 4 stress energy tensors $(T)$ in D=3 in free field theories of scalars, abelian gauge fields, and fermions, which are relevant in the analysis of cosmological non-gaussianities. These correlators appear in the holographic expressions of the scalar and tensor perturbations derived for holographic cosmological models. The result is simply adapted to describe the leading contributions in the gauge coupling to the same correlators also for a non abelian SU(N) gauge theory. In the case of the bispectrum, our results are mapped and shown to be in full ag…
In general relativity, it has been shown that the effective gravitational stress-energy tensor for short-wavelength metric perturbations acts just like that for a radiation fluid, and thus, in particular, cannot provide any effects that mimic dark energy. However, it is far from obvious if this property of the effective gravitational stress-energy tensor is a specific nature held only in the Einstein gravity, or holds also in other theories of gravity. In particular, when considering modified gravity theories that involve higher order derivative terms, one may expect to have some non-negligibl…
A new gauge-invariant approach for describing cosmological perturbations is developed. It is based on a physically motivated splitting of the stress-energy tensor of the perturbation into two parts - the bare perturbation and the complementary perturbation associated with stresses in the background gravitational field induced by the introduction of the bare perturbation. The complementary perturbation of the stress-energy tensor is explicitly singled out and taken to the left side of the perturbed Einstein equations so that the bare stress-energy tensor is the sole source for the perturbation …
Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) can be obtained by modifying the entropic formulation of gravity, this is achieved by considering the quantum statistical nature of the degrees of freedom on the holographic screen. Through this frame work, we find some constraints on a cosmological extension for MOND, with no additional auxiliary fields. The connections between MOND to conformal gravity and Rindler force gravity are examined. These two alternative gravity theories are subsequently considered as possible cosmological extensions of MOND.
We propose a suitable vacuum state for a quantized Dirac field interacting with a classical scalar field in a Friedman-Robertson-Walker-Lemaitre spacetime. This state is constructed from an extended version of the adiabatic expansion of the associated Fourier modes of the field. We compute the full renormalized stress-energy tensor. For any given initial time, this instantaneous vacuum can always be chosen to have vanishing Fourier modes for the renormalized stress-energy tensor. We check the consistency of the solution for several inflationary models.
We show how cosmological correlation functions of massless fields can be rewritten in terms of Minkowski correlation functions, by extracting symmetry-breaking operators from the cosmological correlators. This technique simplifies some cosmological calculations. Also, known properties of Minkowski correlation functions can be translated to non-trivial properties of cosmological correlations. To illustrate this idea, inflation to Minkowski and matter bounce to Minkowski relations are presented for the interactions of general single field inflation. And a Minkowski recursion relation is translat…
We show that there exist solutions to the semi-classical gravity equations in de Sitter spacetime sourced by the renormalised stress-energy tensor of a free Klein-Gordon field. For the massless scalar, solutions exist for every possible value of the cosmological constant, provided that the curvature coupling parameter is chosen appropriately. In the massive case, imposing Wald's axioms for the renormalised stress-energy tensor, the mass of the field and the curvature coupling constraint the allowed values of $Λ$. For a massive, minimally coupled field, a "small $Λ$" solution is found, fixed by…
SU(2) flat connection on 2D Riemann surface is shown to relate to the generalized twisted geometry in 3D space with cosmological constant. Various flat connection quantities on Riemann surface are mapped to the geometrical quantities in discrete 3D space. We propose that the moduli space of SU(2) flat connections on Riemann surface generalizes the phase space of twisted geometry or Loop Quantum Gravity to include the cosmological constant.
Finite expressions for the mean value of the stress tensor corresponding to a scalar field with a generalized dispersion relation in a Friedman--Robertson--Walker universe are obtained using adiabatic renormalization. Formally divergent integrals are evaluated by means of dimensional regularization. The renormalization procedure is shown to be equivalent to a redefinition of the cosmological constant and the Newton constant in the semiclassical Einstein equations.
Quasilocal definitions of stress-energy-momentum -- that is, in the form of boundary densities (rather than local volume densities) -- have proven generally very useful in formulating and applying conservation laws in general relativity. In this paper, we present a detailed application of such definitions to cosmology, specifically using the Brown-York quasilocal stress-energy-momentum tensor for matter and gravity combined. We compute this tensor, focusing on the energy and its associated conservation law, for FLRW spacetimes with no pertubrations and with scalar cosmological perturbations. F…
Among the different methods to derive particle creation, finding the quantum stress tensor expectation value gives a covariant quantity which can be used for examining the back-reaction issue. However this tensor also includes vacuum polarization in a way that depends on the vacuum chosen. Here we review different aspects of particle creation by looking at energy conservation and at the quantum stress tensor. It will be shown that in the case of general spherically symmetric black holes that have a \emph{dynamical horizon}, as occurs in a cosmological context, one cannot have pair creation on …
It is known that the unregularized expressions for the stress-energy tensor components corresponding to subhorizon and superhorizon vacuum fluctuations of a massless scalar field in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background are characterized by the equation of state parameters w=1/3 and w=-1/3, which are not sufficient to produce cosmological acceleration. However, the form of the adiabatically regularized finite stress-energy tensor turns out to be completely different. By using the fact that vacuum subhorizon modes evolve nearly adiabatically and superhorizon modes have w=-1/3, we approximatel…
The Hadamard renormalization prescription is used to derive a two dimensional analog of the renormalized stress tensor for a minimally coupled scalar field in Schwarzschild-de Sitter space time. In the two dimensional analog the minimal coupling reduces to the conformal coupling and the stress tensor is found to be determined by the (nonlocal) contribution of the anomalous trace and some additional parameters in close relation to the work [1]. To properly relate the stress tensor to the state of outwards signals coming from the direction of the black hole at late times we propose a cut-off hyp…
We treat the two-dimensional Achucarro-Ortiz black hole (also known as (1+1) dilatonic black hole) as a Casimir-type system. The stress tensor of a massless scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on two one-dimensional "walls" ("Dirichlet walls") is explicitly calculated in three different vacua. Without employing known regularization techniques, the expression in each vacuum for the stress tensor is reached by using the Wald's axioms. Finally, within this asymptotically non-flat gravitational background, it is shown that the equilibrium of the configurations, obtained by settin…
We present an exact solution to the equations of massive gravity that displays cosmological constant-like behavior for any spherically symmetric distribution of matter, including arbitrary time dependence. On this solution, the new degrees of freedom from the massive graviton generate a cosmological constant-like contribution to stress-energy that does not interact directly with other matter sources. When the effective cosmological constant contribution dominates over other sources of stress energy the cosmological expansion self-accelerates, even when no other dark-energy-like ingredients are…
We study the symmetries of the post-recombination cosmological magnetohydrodynamical equations which describe the evolution of dark matter, baryons and magnetic fields in a self-consistent way. This is done both at the level of fluid equations and of Vlasov-Poisson-Maxwell equations in phase space. We discuss some consistency relations for the soft limit of the (n + 1)-correlator functions involving magnetic fields and matter overdensities. In particular, we stress that any violation of such consistency relations at equal-time would point towards an inflationary origin of the magnetic field.
We exploit the relationship between the space components of the energy-momentum tensor and the supercurrent to discuss the connection between the BPS equations and the vanishing of the components of the stress tensor in various supersymmetric theories with solitons. Using the fact that certain combination of supercharges annihilate BPS states, we show that $T_{ij}=0$ for kinks, vortices and dyons, displaying the connection between supersymmetry and non-interacting BPS solitons.
We discuss the adiabatic basis dependence of particle number in time-dependent backgrounds. In particular, we focus on preheating after inflation, and show that, for the optimal basis, the time dependence of the produced particle number can be well approximated by a simple connection formula, which can be obtained by analysing Stokes phenomenon in given backgrounds. As we show explicitly, the simple connection formula can describe various parameter regions such as narrow and broad resonance regime in a unified manner.
We investigate the evolution of scalar metric perturbations across a sudden cosmological transition, allowing for an inhomogeneous surface stress at the transition leading to a discontinuity in the local expansion rate, such as might be expected in a big crunch/big bang event. We assume that the transition occurs when some function of local matter variables reaches a critical value, and that the surface stress is also a function of local matter variables. In particular we consider the case of a single scalar field and show that a necessary condition for the surface stress tensor to be perturbe…
We present a model in which the breackdown of conformal symmetry of a quantum stress-tensor due to the trace anomaly is related to a cosmological effect in a gravitational model. This is done by characterizing the traceless part of the quantum stress-tensor in terms of the stress-tensor of a conformal invariant classical scalar field. We introduce a conformal frame in which the anomalous trace is identified with a cosmological constant. In this conformal frame we establish the Einstein field equations by connecting the quantum stress-tensor with the large scale distribution of matter in the un…
We correct a sign in the first variation of the on-shell action of cosmological topologically massive gravity at the chiral point and present the three equations affected by that sign. While this does not change any of the main conclusions of arXiv:0805.2610, it modifies the finite part of the Brown-York stress tensor. Our corrected Brown-York stress tensor is still finite, conserved and traceless, but no longer coincides with that of global AdS_3. It agrees with results found in recent literature.
When physics is expressed in a way that is independent of local choices of unit systems, Riemannian geometry is replaced by conformal geometry. Moreover masses become geometric, appearing as Weyl weights of tractors (conformal multiplets of fields necessary to keep local unit invariance manifest). The relationship between these weights and masses is through the scalar curvature. As a consequence mass terms are spacetime dependent for off-shell gravitational backgrounds, but happily constant for physical, Einstein manifolds. Unfortunately this introduces a naturalness problem because the scalar…
We match an interior solution of a spherically symmetric traversable wormhole to a unique exterior vacuum solution, with a generic cosmological constant, at a junction interface, and the surface stresses on the thin shell are deduced. In the spirit of minimizing the usage of exotic matter we determine regions in which the weak and null energy conditions are satisfied on the junction surface. The characteristics and several physical properties of the surface stresses are explored, namely, regions where the sign of the tangential surface pressure is positive and negative (surface tension) are de…
A covariant description of quantum matter fields in the early universe underpins models for the origin of species, e.g. baryogenesis and dark matter production. In nearly all cases the relevant cosmological observables are computed in a general approximation, via the standard irreducible representations found in the operator formalism of particle physics, where intricacies related to a renormalized stress-energy tensor in a non-stationary spacetime are ignored. Models of the early universe also include a dense environment of quantum fields where far-from-equilibrium interactions manifest expre…
There has been growing interest in $f(Q)$ gravity, which has led to significant advancements in the field. However, it is important to note that most studies in this area were based on the coincident gauge, thus overlooking the impact of the connection degrees of freedom. In this work, we pay special attention to the connection when studying perturbations in general teleparallel, metric teleparallel, and symmetric teleparallel theories of gravity. We do not just examine perturbations in the metric, but also in the affine connection. To illustrate this, we investigate cosmological perturbations…
In case of the Einstein's gravitation theory and its first order Palatini reformulation, the stress-energy-momentum of gravity has been proved to reduce to the Komar superpotential. We generalize this result to the affine-metric theory of gravity in case of general connections and arbitrary Lagrangian densities invariant under general covariant transformations. In this case, the stress-energy-momentum of gravity comes to the generalized Komar superpotential depending on a Lagrangian density in a precise way.
In a toy model we derive the gravitational equation on a self-gravitating curved D-brane. The effective theory on the brane is drastically changed from the ordinal Einstein equation. The net cosmological constant on the brane depends on a tuning between the brane tension and the brane charges. Moreover, non-zero matter stress tensor exists if the net cosmological constant is not zero. This fact indicates a direct connection between matters on the brane and the dark energy.
The ghost-free theory of massive gravity has exact solutions where the effective stress energy generated by the graviton mass term is a cosmological constant for any isotropic metric. Since they are exact, these solutions mimic a cosmological constant in the presence of any matter-induced isotropic metric perturbation. In the Stueckelberg formulation, this stress energy is carried entirely by the spatial Stueckelberg field. We show that any stress energy carried by fluctuations in the spatial field away from the exact solution always decays away in an expanding universe. However, the dynamics …
An important class of observables for gravitational waves consists of the fluxes of energy, momentum and angular momentum carried away by them and are well understood for weak gravitational waves in Minkowski background. In de Sitter background, the future null infinity, $\mathcal{J}^+$, is space-like which makes the meaning of these observables subtle. A spatially compact source in de Sitter background also provides a distinguished null hypersurface, its {\em cosmological horizon}, $\mathcal{H}^+$. For sources supporting the short wavelength approximation, we adopt the Isaacson prescription t…
For spaces which are not asymptotically anti-de Sitter where the asymptotic behavior is deformed by replacing the cosmological constant by a dilaton scalar potential, we show that it is possible to have well-defined boundary stress-energy tensors and finite Euclidean actions by adding appropriate surface counterterms. We illustrate the method by the examples of domain-wall black holes in gauged supergravities, three-dimensional dilaton black holes and topological dilaton black holes in four dimensions. We calculate the boundary stress-energy tensor and Euclidean action of these black configura…
We present a new method for calculating loops in cosmological perturbation theory. This method is based on approximating a $Λ$CDM-like cosmology as a finite sum of complex power-law universes. The decomposition is naturally achieved using an FFTLog algorithm. For power-law cosmologies, all loop integrals are formally equivalent to loop integrals of massless quantum field theory. These integrals have analytic solutions in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. We provide explicit formulae for the one-loop and the two-loop power spectrum and the one-loop bispectrum. A chief advantage of …
We study systematically which features in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large-scale structure (LSS) probe various inhomogeneous properties of the dark sectors (including neutrinos, dark matter, and dark energy). We stress, and quantify by simple formulas, that the primary CMB anisotropies are very susceptible to the gravitational potentials during horizon entry, less at recombination. The CMB thus allows us to scan Φ+Ψand the underlying dark kinetics for all redshifts z~1-10^5. LSS, on the other hand, responds strongest to Φat low redshifts. Dark perturbations are often parameteriz…
The vacuum expectation value of the surface energy-momentum tensor is evaluated for a massless scalar field obeying mixed boundary condition on an infinite plate moving by uniform proper acceleration through the Fulling-Rindler vacuum. The generalized zeta function technique is used, in combination with the contour integral representation. The surface energies for separate regions on the left and on the right of the plate contain pole and finite contributions. Analytic expressions for both these contributions are derived. For a minimally coupled scalar the surface energy-momentum tensor induce…
For theories of relativistic matter fields there exist two possible definitions of the stress-energy tensor, one defined by a variation of the action with the coframes at fixed connection, and the other at fixed torsion. These two stress-energy tensors do not necessarily coincide and it is the latter that corresponds to the Cauchy stress measured in the lab. In this note we discuss the corresponding issue for non-relativistic matter theories. We point out that while the physical non-relativistic stress, momentum, and mass currents are defined by a variation of the action at fixed torsion, the …
Starting from an affinely connected space, we consider a model of gravity whose fundamental field is the connection. We build up the action using as sole premise the invariance under diffeomorphisms, and study the consequences of a cosmological ansatz for the affine connection in the torsion-free sector. Although the model is built without requiring a metric, we show that the nondegenerated Ricci curvature of the affine connection can be interpreted as an \emph{emergent} metric on the manifold. We show that there exists a parametrization in which the \((r,φ)\)-restriction of the geodesics coin…
We critically assess a recent assertion (arXiv:1508.01124) concerning using delta-functions to analyze how higher-codimension branes back-react on their environment. We also briefly summarize the state of the art: describing how stress-energy balance dictates the components of off-brane stress energy in terms brane tension; how this can modify the standard tension/defect-angle relation for codimension-two sources when dilatons are present; and how it all relates to extra-dimensional searches for a small cosmological constant.
We construct Godel-type black hole and particle solutions to Einstein-Maxwell theory in 2+1 dimensions with a negative cosmological constant and a Chern-Simons term. On-shell, the electromagnetic stress-energy tensor effectively replaces the cosmological constant by minus the square of the topological mass and produces the stress-energy of a pressure-free perfect fluid. We show how a particular solution is related to the original Godel universe and analyze the solutions from the point of view of identifications. Finally, we compute the conserved charges and work out the thermodynamics.
We propose to compute the action and global charges of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory by adding boundary counterterms to the gravitational action. The general expression of the counterterms and the boundary stress tensor is presented for spacetimes of dimension $d\leq 9$. We apply this tehnique for several different types of black objects. Apart from static and rotating black holes, we consider also Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black string solutions with negative cosmological constant.
One has not any conventional energy-momentum conservation law in Lagrangian field theory, but relations involving different stress-energy-momentum tensors associated with different connections. It is not obvious how to choose the true energy-momentum tensor. This problem is solved in the framework of the multimomentum Hamiltonian formalism which provides the adequate description of constraint field systems. The goal is that, for different solutions of the same constraint field model, one should choose different stress-energy-momentum tensors in general. Gauge theory illustrates this result. Th…
In the 6-dimensional model of warped compactification based on the euclidean AdS Reissner-Nordstrom metric it is possible to escape artificial 4-brane's stress-energy tensor anistropy necessary for fulfillment of Israel junction conditions by introducing in 3+1 spacetime of the cosmological constant which turns out to be ${}\sim G^2$ ($G$ - Newton's constant) and acquires the value compatible with observations.
We find possible cosmological models of the Polynomial Affine Gravity described by connections that are either compatible or not with a metric. When possible, we compare them with those of General Relativity. We show that the set of cosmological vacuum solutions in General Relativity are a subset of the solutions of Polynomial Affine Gravity. In our model the cosmological constant appears as an integration constant, and additionally, we show that some forms of matter can be emulated by the affine structure---even in the metric compatible case. In the case of connections not compatible with a m…

We review the recently discovered connection between the Belinsky-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz-like ``chaotic'' structure of generic cosmological singularities in eleven-dimensional supergravity and the ``last'' hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra E(10). This intriguing connection suggests the existence of a hidden ``correspondence'' between supergravity (or even M-theory) and null geodesic motion on the infinite-dimensional coset space K(E(10)). If true, this gravity/coset correspondence would offer a new view of the (quantum) fate of space (and matter) at cosmological singularities.
We show a direct connection between Kubo's fluctuation-dissipation relation and Hawking effect that is valid in any dimensions for any stationary or static black hole. The relevant correlators corresponding to the fluctuating part of the force, computed from the known expressions for the anomalous stress tensor related to gravitational anomalies, are shown to satisfy the Kubo relation, from which the temperature of a black hole as seen by an observer at an arbitrary distance is abstracted. This reproduces the Tolman temperature and hence the Hawking temperature as that measured by an observer …
We consider a brane world and its gravitational linear perturbations. We present a general solution of the perturbations in the bulk and find the complete perturbed junction conditions for generic brane dynamics. We also prove that (spin 2) gravitational waves in the great majority of cases can only arise in connection with a non-vanishing anisotropic stress. This has far reaching consequences for inflation in the brane world. Moreover, contrary to the case of the radion, perturbations are stable.
A correspondence between three-dimensional flat connections and constant curvature four-dimensional simplices is used to give a novel quantization of geometry via complex SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory. The resulting quantum geometrical states are hence represented by the 3d blocks of analytically continued Chern-Simons theory. In the semiclassical limit of this quantization the three-dimensional Chern-Simons action, remarkably, becomes the discrete Einstein-Hilbert action of a 4-simplex, featuring the appropriate boundary terms as well as the essential cosmological term proportional to the simpl…
