In this paper, the class of all linearly ordered topological spaces (LOTS) quasi-ordered by the embeddability relation is investigated. In ZFC it is proved that for countable LOTS this quasi-order has both a maximal (universal) element and a finite basis. For the class of uncountable LOTS of cardinality $κ$ it is proved that this quasi-order has no maximal element for $κ$ at least the size of the continuum and that in fact the dominating number for such quasi-orders is maximal, i.e. $2^κ$. Certain subclasses of LOTS, such as the separable LOTS, are studied with respect to the top and internal structure of their respective embedding quasi-order. The basis problem for uncountable LOTS is also considered; assuming the Proper Forcing Axiom there is an eleven element basis for the class of uncountable LOTS and a six element basis for the class of dense uncountable LOTS in which all points have countable cofinality and coinitiality.
The class of linearly ordered sets with one order preserving unary operation has the Strong Amalgamation Property (SAP). The class of linearly ordered sets with one strict order preserving unary operation has AP but not SAP. The class of linearly ordered sets with two order preserving unary operations has not AP. For every set $F$, the class of linearly ordered sets with an $F$-indexed family of automorphisms has SAP. Corresponding results are proved in the case of order reversing operations. Various subclasses of the above classes are considered and some model-theoretical consequences are pre…
We investigate the structure of the monoid of endomorphisms of the ordered set $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ of rational numbers. We show that for any countable linearly ordered set $Ω$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of $\operatorname{End}(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Ω$. We characterise those subsets $X$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ that arise as a retract in $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ in terms of topological information concerning $X$. Finally, we establish that a countable group arises as the automorphism group of a countable linearly ordered set, and hence as a maximal…
We introduce the logics GLP(Λ), a generalization of Japaridze's polymodal provability logic GLP(ω) where Λis any linearly ordered set representing a hierarchy of provability operators of increasing strength. We shall provide a reduction of these logics to GLP(ω) yielding among other things a finitary proof of the normal form theorem for the variable-free fragment of GLP(Λ) and the decidability of GLP(Λ) for recursive orderings Λ. Further, we give a restricted axiomatization of the variable-free fragment of GLP(Λ).
We apply results proved in [Li19] to the linear order expansions of non-trivial free homogeneous structures and the universal n-linear order for $n\geq 2$, and prove the simplicity of their automorphism groups.
The class of involutive bisemilattices plays the role of the algebraic counterpart of paraconsistent weak Kleene logic. Involutive bisemilattices can be represented as Plonka sums of Boolean algebras, that is semilattice direct systems of Boolean algebras. In this paper we exploit the Plonka sum representation with the aim of counting, up to isomorphism, finite involutive bisemilattices whose direct system is given by totally ordered semilattices.
The random ordered graph is the up to isomorphism unique countable homogeneous linearly ordered graph that embeds all finite linearly ordered graphs. We determine the reducts of the random ordered graph up to first-order interdefinability.
In the 1970s M. Laczkovich posed the following problem: Let $\mathcal{B}_1(X)$ denote the set of Baire class $1$ functions defined on an uncountable Polish space $X$ equipped with the pointwise ordering. \[\text{Characterize the order types of the linearly ordered subsets of $\mathcal{B}_1(X)$.} \]The main result of the present paper is a complete solution to this problem. We prove that a linear order is isomorphic to a linearly ordered family of Baire class $1$ functions iff it is isomorphic to a subset of the following linear order that we call $([0,1]^{<ω_1}_{\searrow 0},<_{altlex})$, where…
We present a method for constructing countable models of small theories and apply it to prove theorems on the maximal number of countable non-isomorphic models of linearly ordered theories.
We study the set of Dedekind cuts over a linearly ordered Abelian group as a structure over the language (0,<,+,-). Moreover, we obtain a simple set of axioms for the universal part of the theory of such structures. Finally, we prove that every structure satisfying the given axioms is a sub-structure of the set of cuts over a suitable group.
An infinite linearly ordered set (S,<=) is called doubly homogeneous if its automorphism group A(S) acts 2-transitively on it. We show that any group G arises as outer automorphism group G cong Out(A(S)) of the automorphism group A(S), for some doubly homogeneous chain (S,<=).
Following Laczkovich we consider the partially ordered set $\iB_1(\RR)$ of Baire class 1 functions endowed with the pointwise order, and investigate the order types of the linearly ordered subsets. Answering a question of Komjáth and Kunen we show (in $ZFC$) that special Aronszajn lines are embeddable into $\iB_1(\RR)$. We also show that under Martin's Axiom a linearly ordered set $\mathbb{L}$ with $|\mathbb{L}|<2^ω$ is embeddable into $\iB_1(\RR)$ iff $\mathbb{L}$ does not contain a copy of $ω_1$ or $ω_1^*$. We present a $ZFC$-example of a linear order of size $2^ω$ showing that this characte…
The uniform one-dimensional fragment U1 is a recently introduced extension of the two-variable fragment FO2. The logic U1 enables the use of relation symbols of all arities and thereby extends the scope of applications of FO2. In this article we show that the satisfiability and finite satisfiability problems of U1 over linearly ordered models are NExpTime-complete. The corresponding problems for FO2 are likewise NextIime-complete, so the transition from FO2 to U1 in the ordered realm causes no increase in complexity. To contrast our results, we also establish that U1 with unrestricted use of t…
Hahn's embedding theorem asserts that linearly ordered abelian groups embed in some lexicographic product of real groups. Hahn's theorem is generalized to a class of residuated semigroups in this paper, namely, to odd involutive commutative residuated chains which possess only finitely many idempotent elements. To this end, the partial sublex product construction is introduced to construct new odd involutive commutative residuated lattices from a pair of odd involutive commutative residuated lattices, and a representation theorem for odd involutive commutative residuated chains which possess o…
There are several equivalent characterizations of the valuation rank of an ordered or valued field. In this paper, we extend the theory to the case of an ordered or valued {\it difference} field (that is, ordered or valued field endowed with a compatible field automorphism). We introduce the notion of {\it difference rank}. To treat simultaneously the cases of ordered and valued fields, we consider quasi-ordered fields. We characterize the difference rank as the quotient modulo the equivalence relation naturally induced by the automorphism (which encodes its growth rate). In analogy to the the…
Jech proved that every partially ordered set can be embedded into the cardinals of some model of $ZF$. We extend this result to show that every partially ordered set can be embedded into the cardinals of some model of $ZF+DC_{<κ}$ for any regular $κ$. We use this theorem to show that for all $κ$, the assumption of $DC_κ$ does not entail that there are no decreasing chains of cardinals. We also show how to extend the result to and embed into the cardinals a proper class which is definable over the ground model. We use this extension to give a large cardinals-free proof of independence of the we…

We study rigidity properties of linearly ordered sets (chains) under automorphisms, order-embeddings, epimorphisms, and endomorphisms. We focus on two main cases, dense subchains of the real numbers, and uncountable dense chains of higher (regular) cardinalities. We also give a Fraenkel-Mostowski model which illustrates the role of the axiom of choice in one of the key proofs.
We generalize the Unstable Formula Theorem characterization of stable theories from \citep{sh78}: that a theory $T$ is stable just in case any infinite indiscernible sequence in a model of $T$ is an indiscernible set. We use a generalized form of indiscernibles from \citep{sh78}: in our notation, a sequence of parameters from an $L$-structure $M$, $(b_i : i \in I)$, indexed by an $L'$-structure $I$ is \emph{$L'$-generalized indiscernible in $M$} if qftp$^{L'}(\ov{i};I)$=qftp$^{L'}(\ov{j};I)$ implies tp$^L(\ov{b}_{\ov{i}}; M)$ = tp$^L(\ov{b}_{\ov{j}};M)$ for all same-length, finite $\ov{i}, \ov…
