We show that the spacing between eigenvalues of the discrete 1D Hamiltonian with arbitrary potentials which are bounded, and with Dirichlet or Neumann Boundary Conditions is bounded away from zero. We prove an explicit lower bound, given by $Ce^{-bN}$, where $N$ is the lattice size, and $C$ and $b$ are some finite constants. In particular, the spectra of such Hamiltonians have no degenerate eigenvalues. As applications we show that to leading order in the coupling, the solution of a nonlinearly perturbed Anderson model in one-dimension (on the lattice) remains exponentially localized, in probability and average sense for initial conditions given by a unique eigenfunction of the linear problem. We also bound the derivative of the eigenfunctions of the linear Anderson model with respect to a potential change.
In this note we show that, a simple combination of deep results in the theory of random Schrödinger operators yields a quantitative estimate of the fact that the localization centers become far apart, as corresponding energies are close together.
We prove localization and probabilistic bounds on the minimum level spacing for the Anderson tight-binding model on the lattice in any dimension, with single-site potential having a discrete distribution taking N values, with N large.
This work shows that dynamical features typical of full random matrices can be observed also in the simple finite one-dimensional (1D) noninteracting Anderson model with nearest neighbor couplings. In the thermodynamic limit, all eigenstates of this model are exponentially localized in configuration space for any infinitesimal onsite disorder strength $W$. But this is not the case when the model is finite and the localization length is larger than the system size $L$, which is a picture that can be experimentally investigated. We analyze the degree of energy-level repulsion, the structure of t…
We study, both experimentally and numerically, the Anderson localization phenomenon in torsional waves of a disordered elastic rod, which consists of a cylinder with randomly spaced notches. We find that the normal-mode wave amplitudes are exponentially localized as occurs in disordered solids. The localization length is measured using these wave amplitudes and it is shown to decrease as a function of frequency. The normal-mode spectrum is also measured as well as computed, so its level statistics can be analyzed. Fitting the nearest-neighbor spacing distribution a level repulsion parameter is…
The generalization of the Dyson Brownian Motion approach of random matrices to Anderson Localization (AL) models [Chalker, Lerner and Smith PRL 77, 554 (1996)] and to Many-Body Localization (MBL) Hamiltonians [Serbyn and Moore arxiv:1508.07293] is revisited to extract the level repulsion exponent $β$, where $β=1$ in the delocalized phase governed by the Wigner-Dyson statistics, $β=0$ in the localized phase governed by the Poisson statistics, and $0<β_c<1$ at the critical point. The idea is that the Gaussian disorder variables $h_i$ are promoted to Gaussian stationary processes $h_i(t)$ in orde…
We revisit the Anderson localization problem on Bethe lattices, putting in contact various aspects which have been previously only discussed separately. For the case of connectivity 3 we compute by the cavity method the density of states and the evolution of the mobility edge with disorder. Furthermore, we show that below a certain critical value of the disorder the smallest eigenvalue remains delocalized and separated by all the others (localized) ones by a gap. We also study the evolution of the mobility edge at the center of the band with the connectivity, and discuss the large connectivity…
We measure the field transmission matrix t for microwave radiation propagating through random waveguides in the crossover to Anderson localization. From these measurements, we determine the dimensionless conductance, g, and the individual eigenvalues $τ_n$ of the transmission matrix $tt^\dagger$ whose sum equals g. In diffusive samples, the highest eigenvalue, $τ_1$, is close to unity corresponding to a transmission of nearly 100%, while for localized waves, the average of $τ_1$, is nearly equal to g. We find that the spacing between average values of $\lnτ_n$ is constant and demonstrate that …
We calculate the level compressibility $χ(W,L)$ of the energy levels inside $[-L/2,L/2]$ for the Anderson model on infinitely large random regular graphs with on-site potentials distributed uniformly in $[-W/2,W/2]$. We show that $χ(W,L)$ approaches the limit $\lim_{L \rightarrow 0^+} χ(W,L) = 0$ for a broad interval of the disorder strength $W$ within the extended phase, including the region of $W$ close to the critical point for the Anderson transition. These results strongly suggest that the energy levels follow the Wigner-Dyson statistics in the extended phase, consistent with earlier anal…
We investigate quantum transport through strongly disordered barriers, made of a material with exceptionally high resistivity that behaves as an Anderson insulator or a ``bad metal'' in the bulk, by analyzing the distribution of Landauer transmission eigenvalues for a junction where such barrier is attached to two clean metallic leads. We find that scaling of the transmission eigenvalue distribution with the junction thickness (starting from the single interface limit) always predicts a non-zero probability to find high transmission channels even in relatively thick barriers. Using this distri…
We study the interaction of Anderson localized states in an open 1D random system by varying the internal structure of the sample. As the frequencies of two states come close, they are transformed into multiply-peaked quasi-extended modes. Level repulsion is observed experimentally and explained within a model of coupled resonators. The spectral and spatial evolution of the coupled modes is described in terms of the coupling coefficient and Q-factors of resonators.
We study the spectral rigidity of the non-Hermitian analog of the Anderson model suggested by Tzortzakakis, Makris and Economou (TME). This is a $L\times L \times L$ tightly bound cubic lattice, where both real and imaginary parts of on-site energies are independent random variables uniformly distributed between $-W/2$ and $W/2$. The TME model may be used to describe a random laser. In a recent paper we proved that this model has the Anderson transition at $W= W_c \simeq 6$ in three dimension. Here we numerically diagonalize TME $L \times L \times L$ cubic lattice matrices and calculate the nu…
Complex networks with directed, local interactions are ubiquitous in nature, and often occur with probabilistic connections due to both intrinsic stochasticity and disordered environments. Sparse non-Hermitian random matrices arise naturally in this context, and are key to describing statistical properties of the non-equilibrium dynamics that emerges from interactions within the network structure. Here, we study one-dimensional (1d) spatial structures and focus on sparse non-Hermitian random matrices in the spirit of tight-binding models in solid state physics. We first investigate two-point e…
Dyson insulators with random hoppings in a lattice approach localization faster compared to the usual Anderson insulators with site disorder. For even-$N$ lattice sites the Dyson insulators mimic topological insulators with a pseudo-gap at the band center and the energy-level statistics obtained via the $P(S)$ distribution is of an intermediate type close to the Anderson localized Poisson limit. For odd-$N$ level-repulsion and Wigner statistics appears as in the quasi-metallic regime of $2D$ Anderson insulators, plus a single $E=0$ mode protected by chiral symmetry. The distribution of the par…
We study the Anderson transition for three-dimensional (3D) $N \times N \times N$ tightly bound cubic lattices where both real and imaginary parts of onsite energies are independent random variables distributed uniformly between $-W/2$ and $W/2$. Such a non-Hermitian analog of the Anderson model is used to describe random-laser medium with local loss and amplification. We employ eigenvalue statistics to search for the Anderson transition. For 25\% smallest-modulus complex eigenvalues we find the average ratio $r$ of distances to the first and the second nearest neighbor as a function of $W$. F…
We introduce a number of random matrix models describing the Google matrix G of directed networks. The properties of their spectra and eigenstates are analyzed by numerical matrix diagonalization. We show that for certain models it is possible to have an algebraic decay of PageRank vector with the exponent similar to real directed networks. At the same time the spectrum has no spectral gap and a broad distribution of eigenvalues in the complex plain. The eigenstates of G are characterized by the Anderson transition from localized to delocalized states and a mobility edge curve in the complex p…
The genuine physical reasons explaining the delocalization effect of the Hubbard repulsion U are analyzed. First it is shown that always when this effect is observed, U acts on the background of a macroscopic degeneracy present in a multiband type of system. After this step I demonstrate that acting in such conditions, by strongly diminishing the double occupancy, U spreads out the contributions in the ground state wave function, hence strongly increases the one-particle localization length, consequently extends the one-particle behavior producing conditions for a delocalization effect. To be …
We consider a continuous one dimensional model of two charged interacting particles in a random potential. The electric repulsion is strictly one dimensional and it inhibits Anderson localization. In fact, the spectrum is continuous. The case of electrical atraction is briefly studied and it shows bounded states. So, the dynamics is sign dependent for this model. We support our analytical results with numerical simulations where the effect of repulsion breaking localization is clearly observed.

The nature of transport of electrons and classical waves in disordered systems depends upon the proximity to the Anderson localization transition between freely diffusing and localized waves. The suppression of average transport and the enhancement of relative fluctuations in conductance in one-dimensional samples with lengths greatly exceeding the localization length, $L\gg ξ$, are related in the single parameter scaling (SPS) theory of localization. However, the difficulty of producing an ensemble of statistically equivalent samples in which the electron wavefunction is temporally coherent h…
Using a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach to open systems, we study the interplay of disorder and superradiance in a one- and three-dimensional Anderson model. Analyzing the complex eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, a transition to a superradiant regime is shown to occur. As an effect of openness the structure of eigenstates undergoes a strong change in the superradiant regime: we show that the sensitivity to disorder of the superradiant and the subradiant subspaces is very different; superradiant states remain delocalized as disorder increases, while subradiant states are sensiti…
We consider a quantum particle in a one-dimensional disordered lattice with Anderson localization, in the presence of multi-frequency perturbations of the onsite energies. Using the Floquet representation, we transform the eigenvalue problem into a Wannier-Stark basis. Each frequency component contributes either to a single channel or a multi-channel connectivity along the lattice, depending on the control parameters. The single channel regime is essentially equivalent to the undriven case. The multi-channel driving substantially increases the localization length for slow driving, showing two …
We present a general and powerful numerical method useful to study the density matrix of spin models. We apply the method to finite dimensional spin glasses, and we analyze in detail the four dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian quenched random couplings. Our results clearly support the existence of replica symmetry breaking in the thermodynamical limit.
The nature of spin-glass phase of the four-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising model is numerically studied by eigenmode analysis of the susceptibility matrix up to the lattice size 10^4. Unlike the preceding results on smaller lattices, our result suggests that there exist multiple extensive eigenvalues of the matrix, which does not contradict replica-symmetry-breaking scenarios. The sensitivity of the eigenmodes with respect to a temperature change is examined using finite-size-scaling analysis and an evidence of anomalous sensitivity is found. A computational advantage of dual formulation of…
We study the affinities between the shape of the bright soliton of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation and that of the disorder induced localization in the presence of a Gaussian random potential. With emphasis on the focusing nonlinearity, we consider the bound states of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a random potential; for the state exhibiting the highest degree of localization, we derive explicit expressions for the nonlinear eigenvalue and for the localization length by using perturbation theory and a variational approach following the methods of statistical mech…
We investigate the quantum properties of 1D quantum systems whose classical counterpart presents intermittency. The spectral correlations are expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of an anomalous diffusion operator by using recent semiclassical techniques. For certain values of the parameters the spectral properties of our model show similarities with those of a disordered system at the Anderson transition. In Hamiltonian systems, intermittency is closely related to the presence of cantori in the classical phase space. We suggest, based on this relation, that our findings may be relevant for t…
