We investigate the relationship between mapping cones and matrix ordered *-vector spaces (i.e., abstract operator systems). We show that to every mapping cone there is an associated operator system on the space of n-by-n complex matrices, and furthermore we show that the associated operator system is unique and has a certain homogeneity property. Conversely, we show that the cone of completely positive maps on any operator system with that homogeneity property is a mapping cone. We also consider several related problems, such as characterizing cones that are closed under composition on the right by completely positive maps, and cones that are also semigroups, in terms of operator systems.
We answer in the affirmative a recently-posed question that asked if there exists an "untypical" convex mapping cone -- i.e., one that does not arise from the transpose map and the cones of k-positive and k-superpositive maps. We explicitly construct such a cone based on atomic positive maps. Our general technique is to consider the smallest convex mapping cone generated by a single map, and we derive several results on such mapping cones. We use this technique to also present several other examples of untypical mapping cones, including a family of cones generated by spin factors. We also prov…
We study mapping cones and their dual cones of positive maps of the n by n matrices into itself. For a natural class of cones there is a close relationship between maps in the cone, super-positive maps, and separable states. In particular the composition of a map from the cone with a map in the dual cone is super-positive, and so the natural state it defines is separable.
In the finite-dimensional case, we present a new approach to the theory of cones with a mapping cone symmetry, first introduced by Størmer. Our method is based on a definition of an inner product in the space of linear maps between two algebras of operators and the fact that the Jamiołkowski-Choi isomorphism is an isometry. We consider a slightly modified class of cones, although not substantially different from the original mapping cones by Størmer. Using the new approach, several known results are proved faster and often in more generality than before. For example, the dual of a mapping cone…
This is a revised form of the previous paper in which we study cones of positive maps of B(H) into itself. We add the result that the dual cone of a symmetric mapping cone is itself a symmetric mapping cone. As applications we obtain characterizations of linear functionals with strong positivity conditions with respect to a class of mapping cones called symmetric mapping cones. Applications are given to separable and PPT-states.
We introduce the notion of one-sided mapping cones of positive linear maps between matrix algebras. These are convex cones of maps that are invariant under compositions by completely positive maps from either the left or right side. The duals of such convex cones can be characterized in terms of ampliation maps, which can also be used to characterize many notions from quantum information theory---such as separability, entanglement-breaking maps, Schmidt numbers, as well as decomposable maps and $k$-positive maps in functional analysis. In fact, such characterizations hold if and only if the in…
Index maps taking values in the $K$-theory of a mapping cone are defined and discussed. The resulting index theorem can be viewed in analogy with the Freed-Melrose index theorem. The framework of geometric $K$-homology is used in a fundamental way. In particular, an explicit isomorphism from a geometric model for $K$-homology with coefficients in a mapping cone, $C_ϕ$, to $KK(C(X),C_ϕ)$ is constructed.
In \cite{CMW19}, the authors introduced $k$-entanglement breaking linear maps to understand the entanglement breaking property of completely positive maps on taking composition. In this article, we do a systematic study of $k$-entanglement breaking maps. We prove many equivalent conditions for a $k$-positive linear map to be $k$-entanglement breaking, thereby study the mapping cone structure of $k$-entanglement breaking maps. We discuss examples of $k$-entanglement breaking maps and some of their significance. As an application of our study, we characterize completely positive maps that reduce…
For Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of bi-Hilbertian bimodules of finite Jones-Watatani index satisfying some side conditions, we give an explicit isomorphism between the $K$-theory exact sequences of the mapping cone of the inclusion of the coefficient algebra into a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra, and the Cuntz-Pimsner exact sequence. In the process we extend some results by the second author and collaborators from finite projective bimodules to finite index bimodules, and also clarify some aspects of Pimsner's `extension of scalars' construction.
We study Chern characters and the assembly mapping for free actions using the framework of geometric $K$-homology. The focus is on the relative groups associated with a group homomorphism $ϕ:Γ_1\to Γ_2$ along with applications to Novikov type properties. In particular, we prove a relative strong Novikov property for homomorphisms of hyperbolic groups and a relative strong $\ell^1$-Novikov property for polynomially bounded homomorphisms of groups with polynomially bounded cohomology in $\C$. As a corollary, relative higher signatures on a manifold with boundary $W$, with $π_1(\partial W)\to π_1…
Inspired by an analytic construction of Chang, Weinberger and Yu, we define an assembly map in relative geometric $K$-homology. The properties of the geometric assembly map are studied using a variety of index theoretic tools (e.g., the localized index and higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theory). As an application we obtain a vanishing result in the context of manifolds with boundary and positive scalar curvature; this result is also inspired and connected to work of Chang, Weinberger and Yu. Furthermore, we use results of Wahl to show that rational injectivity of the relative assembly map i…
In this paper we consider power means of positive Hilbert space operators both in the conventional and in the Kubo-Ando senses. We describe the corresponding isomorphisms (bijective transformations respecting those means as binary operations) on positive definite cones and on positive semidefinite cones in operator algebras. We also investigate the question when those two sorts of power means can be transformed into each other.
We initiate the study of absorbing representations of $C^\ast$-algebras with respect to closed operator convex cones. We completely determine when such absorbing representations exist, which leads to the question of characterising when a representation is absorbing, as in the classical Weyl-von Neumann type theorem of Voiculescu. In the classical case, this was proven by Elliott and Kucerovsky who proved that a representation is nuclearly absorbing if and only if it induces a purely large extension. By considering a related problem for extensions of $C^\ast$-algebras, which we call the purely …
The analysis of classical consensus algorithms relies on contraction properties of adjoints of Markov operators, with respect to Hilbert's projective metric or to a related family of seminorms (Hopf's oscillation or Hilbert's seminorm). We generalize these properties to abstract consensus operators over normal cones, which include the unital completely positive maps (Kraus operators) arising in quantum information theory. In particular, we show that the contraction rate of such operators, with respect to the Hopf oscillation seminorm, is given by an analogue of Dobrushin's ergodicity coefficie…
The state space of an operator system of $n$-by-$n$ matrices has, in a sense, many normal cones. Merely this convex geometrical property implies smoothness qualities and a clustering property of exposed faces. The latter holds since each exposed face is an intersection of maximal exposed faces. An isomorphism translates these results to the lattice of ground state projections of the operator system. We work on minimizing the assumptions under which a convex set has the mentioned properties.
There are several important abstract operator systems with the convex cone of positive semidefinite matrices at the first level. Well-known are the operator systems of separable matrices, of positive semidefinite matrices, and of block positive matrices. In terms of maps, these are the operator systems of entanglement breaking, completely positive, and positive linear maps, respectively. But there exist other interesting and less well-studied such operator systems, for example those of completely copositive maps, doubly completely positive maps, and decomposable maps, which all play an importa…
We systematically study how properties of abstract operator systems help classifying linear matrix inequality definitions of sets. Our main focus is on polyhedral cones, the 3-dimensional Lorentz cone, where we can completely describe all defining linear matrix inequalities, and on the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. Here we use results on isometries between matrix algebras to describe linear matrix inequality definitions of relatively small size. We conversely use the theory of operator systems to characterize special such isometries.
