Because 4-dimensional CP is a good symmetry of many higher-dimensional theories, this suggests the possible existence of a universal CP-violating phase originating from the process of compactification. Such a phase, if it existed, would not be easy to uncover since the phases in Yukawa matrices are not simply related to the observed CKM phase $δ$. Hierarchical Yukawa models of the type arising in F-theory GUT models provide an interesting exception. Recently, Heckman and Vafa studied a particular F-theory GUT model with hierarchical Yukawa matrices with complex phases of O(1) and showed, by examining the Jarlskog invariant, that this model leads to $\sin δ\sim O(1)$. A more detailed examination of the model, although confirming their result, is seen to be also compatible with having a phase $δ_o= π/3$ imprinted on the Hermitian Yukawa matrices, leading to $\sin δ\simeq \sin δ_o$.
We study the impacts of matter field Kähler metric on physical Yukawa couplings in string compactifications. Since the Kähler metric is non-trivial in general, the kinetic mixing of matter fields opens a new avenue for realizing a hierarchical structure of physical Yukawa couplings, even when holomorphic Yukawa couplings have the trivial structure. The hierarchical Yukawa couplings are demonstrated by couplings of pure untwisted modes on toroidal orbifolds and their resolutions in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. Also, we study the hierarchical couplings among un…
We consider a theory of scalar and spinor fields, interacting through Yukawa and phi^4 interactions, with Lorentz-violating operators included in the Lagrangian. We compute the leading quantum corrections in this theory. The renormalizability of the theory is explicitly shown up to one-loop order. In the pure scalar sector, the calculations can be generalized to higher orders and to include finite terms, because the theory can be solved in terms of its Lorentz-invariant version.
With an emphasis on unitarity and CPT requirements, we study the inclusion of CP-violating processes in baryogenesis at next-to-leading order, particularly those involving the top Yukawa interaction in leptogenesis. We show that there are more contributions than previously considered, but also important cancellations. Some of these involve the interference of connected with disconnected diagrams. We also discuss on the application of the Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg theorem to treat the infrared divergences that are common at next-to-leading order. Finally, we calculate the CP asymmetry in the thre…
We have analyzed the possibility that the universal Yukawa coupling (democratic mass matrix) with small violations of Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can induce the large mixing of neutrinos through the seesaw mechanism. The possibility can be achieved by the condition that the violation parameters of Majorana neutrinos are sufficiently smaller than the violation parameters of Dirac neutrinos. Allowed regions of the violation parameters producing the observed neutrino mass hierarchy and large neutrino mixing are not so restricted at present in contrast to the violation parameters for quark sector…
We analyse the strength of CP violation in an extension of the standard model with an extra $Q=-1/3$ vector-like singlet quark, in the framework of the hypothesis of universality of strength of Yukawa couplings connecting standard quarks. We show that the correct pattern of quark masses and mixing can be obtained, including the observed strength of CP violation.
The framework of Higgs-dependent Yukawa couplings allows one to eliminate small couplings from the Standard Model, which can be tested at the LHC. In this work, I study the conditions for CP violation to occur in such models. I identify a class of weak basis invariants controlling CP violation. The invariant measure of CP violation is found to be more than 10 orders of magnitude greater than that in the Standard Model, which can be sufficient for successful electroweak baryogenesis.
We analyse the quark mass hierarchy and CKM matrix using the universal Yukawa coupling model with small violations precisely. We estimate the ranges of the values of 8 violation parameters (delta1u, delta2u, delta3u, delta1d, delta2d, delta3d, phi2, phi3) in our quark mass matrices satisfying quark mass ratios and CKM matrix, where phi2, phi3 are phases. Without these phases, the solution satisfying quark mass ratios and CKM matrix is not obtained. These parameters obtained can explain the CP violation effects.
We show that a large CP asymmetry in hyperon decays can be naturally realized in the framework of SUSY models. The possibility is implemented by the hermiticities of Yukawa and A matrices. And also, the observed values of $ε$ and $ε'$ are explained.
In Lorentz- and CPT-violating effective field theories involving scalar and spinor fields, there exist forms of Lorentz violation that modify only the scalar-spinor Yukawa interaction vertices. These affect low-energy fermion and antifermion scattering processes through modifications to the nonrelativistic Yukawa potentials. The modified potentials involve novel combinations of momentum, spin, and Lorentz-violating background tensors.
We assume the universal Yukawa coupling (democratic mass matrix) with small violations for quarks, charged leptons and neutrinos masses. We could reproduce the mass hierarchy for quark masses and V_{CKM} matrix elements precisely. We adopt the see-saw mechanism for the explanation of smallness of neutrino masses and introduce the right-handed Majorana neutrinos and Dirac neutrinos. We assume the universal Yukawa coupling with small violations for Majorana and Dirac neutrinos. We can get the hierarchy of charged lepton masses and effective neutrino masses and the large mixing of neutrinos expre…
We investigate the phenomenological impact of different sources of lepton flavour violation arising from realistic models based on supergravity mediated supersymmetry breaking with Yukawa operators. We discuss four distinct sources of lepton flavour violation in such models: minimum flavour violation, arising from neutrino masses and the see-saw mechanism with RG running; supergravity flavour violation due to the non-universal structure of the supergravity model; flavour violation due to Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) fields appearing in Yukawa operators developing supersymmetry breaking F-terms and co…
We find that the one-loop correction to the ratio of Yukawa coupling and gauge coupling in the gauge-Higgs unification, "gauge-Yukawa universality violation", is finite and calculable in any space-time dimension. Applying this result to the ratio of top quark and W-boson masses, we show that the order one correction required to generate a viable top quark mass is indeed possible if the fermion embedding top quark belongs to the large dimensional representation of the gauge group and a vacuum expectation value of Higgs scalar field is very small comparing to the compactification scale.
We estimate the magnitude of Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV) from the phase of the neutrino Yukawa matrix. In the minimal supersymmetric standard model with right-handed neutrinos, the LFV processes l_i \to l_j γcan appear through the slepton mixing, which comes from the renormalization group effect on the right-handed neutrino Yukawa interaction between the Grand Unified Theory scale and the heavy right-handed neutrino mass scale. Two types of phases exist in the neutrino Yukawa matrix. One is the Majorana phase, which can change the magnitude of the LFV branching ratios by a few factor. The o…
Though models with the radiative neutrino mass generation are phenomenologically attractive, the complicated relationship between the flavour structure of additional Yukawa matrices and the neutrino mass matrix sometimes is a barrier to explore the models. We introduce a simple prescription to analyze the relation in a class of models with the asymmetric Yukawa structure. We then apply the treatment to the Zee-Babu model as a concrete example of the class and discuss the phenomenological consequences of the model. The combined studies among the neutrino physics, the lepton flavour violation, a…
We analyze the scalar lepton mass matrices in a supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified model with soft SUSY breaking terms generated at Planck scale and a Georgi-Jarslkog Yukawa texture at GUT scale induced by higher dimensional operators. This model predicts lepton flavor violation. The predictive features of the Georgi-Jarlskog texture are used to estimate branching ratios for the radiative decays $e_{a} \rightarrow e_{b}+γ,$ and we find rates that could provide an experimental test for this kind of model.
The WMAP dark matter constraints on b-$τ$ Yukawa Unification in the presence of massive neutrinos is revisited. The predictions for the bottom quark mass are observed to be modified by the large neutrino mixing suggested by the data. This enables Yukawa unification also for large $\tanβ$, and for positive $μ$ that were previously disfavoured. Consequently, the allowed parameter space for neutralino dark matter differs from the MSSM one. We also find that the parameter space being compatible with dark matter also predicts detectable rates for Lepton Flavour Violation at the LHC.
From general analyticity and unitarity requirements on the UV theory, positivity bounds on the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-8 operators composed of 4 fermions and two derivatives appearing in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory have been derived recently. We explore the fate of these bounds in the context of models endowed with a Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) structure, models in which the flavor structure of higher dimensional operators is inherited from the one already contained in the Yukawa sector of the Standard Model Lagrangian. Our goal is to check whether the general pos…
We propose a new type of supersymmetric models coupled to superconformal field theories (SCFT's), leading simultaneously to hierarchical Yukawa couplings and completely degenerate sfermion masses. We consider models with an extra Abelian gauge symmetry to generate hierarchical structure for couplings between the SM sector and the SC sector. Interestingly, this hierarchy is inversely transferred to the Yukawa couplings in the SM sector. In this type of models, flavor-independent structure of the superconformal fixed point guarantees that the sfermion masses of the first and the second generatio…
The origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe is a fundamental question of physics. Electroweak baryogenesis is a compelling scenario for explaining it but it requires beyond the Standard Model sources of the CP symmetry violation. The simplest possibility is CP violation in the third generation fermion Higgs couplings, widely investigated theoretically and searched for experimentally. It has been found that the experimental bounds on the CP violation in the quark Yukawa couplings exclude their significant role in the electroweak baryogenesis, but it can be still played by the …
We study the renormalization group evolution and the infra-red stable fixed points of the Yukawa couplings of the non-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) with R-parity violation. Retaining only the R-parity violating couplings of higher generations, we analytically study the solutions of the renormalization group equations of all the couplings of the model. We find that there are no simultaneous non-trivial infra-red fixed points for all the couplings of the model, and that the infra-red fixed point structure of the model is similar to the MSSM with R-parity violation. In particular,…
We propose a model of spontaneous CP violation to address the strong CP problem in warped extra dimensions that relies on sequestering flavor and CP violation. We assume that brane-localized Higgs Yukawa interactions respect a U(3) flavor symmetry that is broken only by bulk fermion mass and Yukawa terms. All CP violation arises from the vev of a CP-odd scalar field localized in the bulk. To suppress radiative corrections to theta-bar, the doublet quarks in this model are localized on the IR brane. We calculate constraints from flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), precision electroweak me…
We propose a new mass matrix ansatz: At the grand unified (GU) scale, the standard model (SM) Yukawa coupling matrix elements are integer powers of the square root of the GU gauge coupling constant \varepsilon \equiv \sqrt{α_{\text{GU}}}, multiplied by order unity random complex numbers. It relates the hierarchy of the SM ermion masses and quark mixings to the gauge coupling constants, greatly reducing the SM parameters, and can give good fitting results of the SM fermion mass, quark mixing and CP violation parameters. This is a neat but very effective ansatz.
In the type I + II seesaw formula the mass matrix of light neutrinos m_nu receives contributions from the exchanges of both heavy Majorana neutrinos and SU(2)_L-triplet Higgs bosons. We propose a new parameterization for the Dirac-type Yukawa coupling matrix of neutrinos in this case, which generalizes the well known Casas-Ibarra parameterization to type I + II seesaw and is useful when the triplet term in m_nu is known. Neutrino masses and mixing, lepton flavor violation in decays like mu -> e γwithin mSUGRA models and leptogenesis can then be studied within this framework. We illustrate the …
We investigate lepton flavor violation in the context of intersecting D-brane models. We point out that these models have a source to generate flavor violation in the trilinear scalar couplings while the geometry of the construction leads to degenerate soft scalar masses for different generations (as in the minimal supergravity model) at the string scale. The trilinear scalar couplings are not proportional to the Yukawa couplings when the F-term of the U-moduli contribution is non-zero. Consequently, the lepton flavor violating decay processes are generated. Only other sources of flavor violat…
We propose a novel mechanism for reproducing the realistic hierarchical structure of the observed CKM mixing matrix and quark masses by means of introducing a warped metric. We illustrate the method on the basis of a specific Type IIA intersecting brane model proposed by Ibanez et al. The model is compactified on a direct product of three tori, on which four D-brane stacks wrap, and the intersections between two stacks collectively provide three generations of quarks and leptons. The exponential of the area formed by the intersection points corresponding to three matter fields is interpreted a…
The equations connecting elements of the Yukawa matrix to elements of the active neutrino mass matrix in the νMSM theory (an extension of the Standard Model by a singlet of three right-handed neutrinos) was analyzed, and explicit relations for the ratio of the Yukawa matrix elements through elements of the active neutrino mass matrix were obtained. This relation can be used for getting more accurate constraints on the model parameters. Particularly, with the help of the obtained results we investigated CP-violating phase in the νMSM theory. We demonstrate that even in the case when elements of…
The most general two Higgs doublet model contains new sources of flavour violation that are usually in conflict with the experimental constraints. One possibility to suppress the exotic contribution to the flavour changing neutral currents consists on imposing the alignment of the Yukawa couplings. This condition presumably holds at a high-energy scale and is spoiled by the radiative corrections. We compute in this letter the size of the radiatively induced flavour violating Higgs couplings at the electroweak scale. These also yield the absolute lower bound on the size of the exotic contributi…
We analyse the CP problem in the context of a supersymmetric extension of the standard model with universal strength of Yukawa couplings. In these models we find a small amount of CP violation from the usual CKM mechanism and therefore a significant contribution from supersymmetry is required. The electric dipole moments impose severe constraints on the parameter space, forcing the trilinear couplings to be factorizable in matrix form. We find that the LL mass insertions give the dominant gluino contribution to saturate epsilon_K, while chargino contributions to epsilon'/epsilon are compatible…
We study the deformation induced by fluxes and instanton effects on Yukawa couplings involving 7-brane intersections in local F-theory constructions. In the absence of non-perturbative effects, holomorphic Yukawa couplings do not depend on open string fluxes. On the other hand instanton effects (or gaugino condensation on distant 7-branes) do induce corrections to the Yukawas. The leading order effect may also be captured by the presence of closed string (1,2) IASD fluxes, which give rise to a non-commutative structure. We check that even in the presence of these non-perturbative effects the h…
We examine contributions from Majorana phases to lepton flavor violating processes in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with heavy right-handed neutrinos. All phases in the complex neutrino Yukawa matrix are taken into account in our study. We find that in the scenario with universal soft-breaking terms sizable phase effects can appear on the lepton flavor violating processes such as $μ\to e γ$, $τ\to e γ$, and $τ\to μγ$. In particular, the branching ratio of $μ\to e γ$ can be considerably enhanced due to the Majorana phases, so that it can be much greater than that of…
We investigate one-loop renormalization group evolutions of extended sectors of Yukawa type couplings. It is shown that Landau Poles which usually provide necessary low energy upper bounds that saturate quickly with increasing initial value conditions, lead in some cases to the opposite behaviour: some of the low energy couplings decrease and become vanishingly small for increasingly large initial conditions. We write down the general criteria for this to happen in typical situations, highlighting a concept of {\sl repulsive} quasi-fixed points, and illustrate the case both within a two-Yukawa…
To explain the observed muon anomaly and simultaneously evade bounds from lepton flavor violation in the same model parameter space is a long cherished dream. In view of a generalized Two Higgs Doublet Model, with a Yukawa structure as a perturbation of Type-X, we are able to get substantial parameter space satisfying this criteria. We are focusing on a region with "{\bf wrong-sign}" lepton-Yukawa coupling which gives rise to an interesting phenomenological consequences. We found that in the "wrong-sign" region, it is possible to probe the low-mass pseudoscalar in flavor-violating decay mode w…
Assuming the Minimal Flavour Violation hypothesis, we derive the general scalar potential for fields whose background values are the Yukawa couplings. We analyze the minimum of the potential and discuss the fine-tuning required to dynamically generate the mass hierarchies and the mixings between different quark generations. Two main cases are considered, corresponding to Yukawa interactions being effective operators of dimension five or six (or, equivalently, resulting from bi-fundamental and fundamental scalar fields, respectively). At the renormalizable and classical level, no mixing is natu…
We analyse the CP violation in supersymmetric models with Hermitian Yukawa and trilinear couplings. We show that Hermitian Yukawa matrices can be implemented in supersymmetric models with SU(3) flavor symmetry. An important feature of this class of models is that the supersymmetric contributions to the EDM of the neutron and mercury atom are suppressed. In this framework, epsilon_K can be saturated by a small non--universality of the soft scalar masses through the gluino contribution. We perform a detailed analysis for the supersymmetric contributions to epsilon'/epsilon. Although, the gluino …
Various lepton-flavor violating (LFV) processes in the supersymmetric standard model with right-handed neutrino supermultiplets are investigated in detail. It is shown that large LFV rates are obtained when $\tan β$ is large. In the case where the mixing matrix in the lepton sector has a similar structure as the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and the third-generation Yukawa coupling is as large as that of the top quark, the branching ratios can be as large as $Br(μ\rightarrow eγ)\simeq 10^{-11}$ and $Br(τ\rightarrowμγ)\simeq 10^{-7}$, which are within the reach of future experiments. If we assume a …
Recent results for the leading $\mathcal{O}{\left(α_t^2\right)}$ two-loop corrections to the Higgs-boson masses of the MSSM with complex parameters are presented. The strategy of the Feynman-diagrammatic, analytical calculation is illustrated. Numerical analyses show agreement with a previous result in the limit of real parameters. Furthermore, the newly available dependence on complex MSSM parameters is investigated. Mass shifts by $\approx 1$GeV for different phases underline the importance of this contribution for a precise prediction of the Higgs-boson mass spectrum in the MSSM.
The cosmological evolution of standard model Yukawa couplings may have major implications for baryogenesis. In particular, as highlighted recently, the CKM matrix alone could be the source of CP-violation during electroweak baryogenesis provided that the Yukawa couplings were large and varied during the electroweak phase transition. We provide a natural realisation of this idea in the context of Randall-Sundrum models and show that the geometrical warped approach to the fermion mass hierarchy may naturally display the desired cosmological dynamics. The key ingredient is the coupling of the Gol…
The Higgs boson discovered at the LHC opened a new chapter for particle physics. Its properties need to be studied in detail to distinguish a purely standard model (SM) Higgs boson from one of many scalars in an enlarged Higgs sector. The CMS collaboration has reported a possible lepton flavor violating (LFV) signal $h\toμτ$, which if confirmed, implies that the Higgs sector is larger than in the SM. New physics responsible for this type of decay may, in general, also introduce other observable effects such as charge-parity (CP) violation in $h\to ττ$. We study two types of models that single …
The hierarchical structure of fermion masses and mixings strongly suggests an underlying family symmetry. In supergravity any familon field spontaneously breaking this symmetry necessarily acquires an F-term which contributes to the soft trilinear couplings. We show, as a result, mu -> e gamma decay can receive large contributions from this source at the level of current experimental bounds and thus this channel may provide the first indication of supersymmetry and a clue to the structure of the soft breaking sector. Using the mercury EDM bounds we find strong bounds on the right handed down q…
The Standard Model of particle physics requires Yukawa matrices with eigenval- ues that differ by orders of magnitude. We propose a novel way to explain this fact without any small or large parameters. The mechanism is based on the observation that products of matrices of random order one-numbers have hierarchical spectra. The same mechanism can easily account for the hierarchical structure of the quark mixing matrix.
We study six-dimensional (6D) SU(6) supersymmetric models where the doublet-triplet splitting, quark-lepton mass relations and gaugino-mediated supersymmetry breaking are taken into account. We find that effective 4D gauge coupling constants have highly nontrivial behavior between two compactification scales. It is shown that realistic patterns of Yukawa coupling constants are obtained for valid values of parameters and that hierarchical numbers are generated via suppression by extra-dimensional effects.
The new round of experiments, MEG II, COMET/Mu2e, and Mu3e, would soon start to push the $μ\to eγ$, $μN \to eN$ conversion, and $μ\to 3e$ frontier, while Belle II would probe $τ\to μγ$ and $τ\to 3μ$. In the general two Higgs doublet model with extra Yukawa couplings, we show that all these processes probe the lepton flavor violating (LFV) dipole transition that arises from the two loop mechanism, with scalar-induced contact terms subdominant. This is because existing data suggest the extra Yukawa couplings $ρ_{μe},\, ρ_{ee} \lesssim λ_e$, while $ρ_{τμ},\, ρ_{ττ} \lesssim λ_τ$ and $ρ_{tt} \less…
We discuss CP violation in the quark sector within a novel approach to the Yukawa puzzle proposed by Arkani-Hamed and Schmaltz, where Yukawa hierarchies result from localising the Standard Model quark field wave-functions, at different positions (in the extra dimensions) in a ``fat-brane.'' We show that at least two extra dimensions are necessary in order to obtain sufficient CP violation while reproducing the correct quark mass spectrum and mixing angles.
Electroweak baryogenesis can be driven by the top quark in a general two Higgs doublet model with extra Yukawa couplings. Higgs quartics provide the first order phase transition, while extra top Yukawa coupling $ρ_{tt}$ can fuel the cosmic baryon asymmetry through the $λ_t\,{\rm Im}\,ρ_{tt}$ product, with flavor-changing $ρ_{tc}$ coupling as backup. The impressive ACME 2018 bound on the electron electric dipole moment calls for an extra electron coupling $ρ_{ee}$ for exquisite cancellation among dangerous diagrams, broadening the baryogenesis solution space. The mechanism suggests that extra Y…
We discuss the formulation of the general two-Higgs doublet model type III, which incorporates flavor changing neutral scalar interactions (FCNSI) and CP violation from several sources. CP violation can arise either from Yukawa terms or from the Higgs potential, and it can explicit or spontaneous. We discuss the case that includes CP violation with Yukawa textures to control FCNSI and evaluate the CP asymmetry for the decay h-> c-b+ W-, which may allow to test the patterns of FCNSI and CP violation, that arises in these models.
We propose a realization of Minimal Flavor Violation in the lepton sector of the Randall-Sundrum model. With the MFV assumption, the only source of flavor violation are the 5D Yukawa couplings, and the usual two independent sources of flavor violation are related. In the limit of massless neutrinos, the bulk mass matrices and 5D Yukawa matrices are simultaneously diagonalized, and hence the absence of FCNCs. In the case of massive neutrinos, the contributions to FCNCs in the charged lepton sector are highly suppressed, due to the smallness of neutrino masses. In addition, the MFV assumption al…
While CP violation in the Higgs interactions with massive vector boson is already tightly constrained, the CP nature of the Higgs interactions with fermions is far less constrained. In this work, we assess the potential of machine-learning-based inference methods to constrain CP violation in the Higgs top-Yukawa coupling. This approach enables the use of the full available kinematic information. Concentrating on top-associated Higgs production with the Higgs decaying to two photons, we derive expected exclusion bounds for the LHC and the high-luminosity phase of the LHC. We also study the depe…
We study in detail the renomalization group evolution of Yukawa couplings and soft supersymmetry breaking trilinear couplings in the minimal supersymmetric standard model with baryon and lepton number violation. We obtain the exact solutions of these equations in a closed form, and then depict the infrared fixed point structure of the third generation Yukawa couplings and the highest generation baryon and lepton number violating couplings. Approximate analytical solutions for these Yukawa couplings and baryon and lepton number violating couplings, and the soft supersymmetry breaking couplings …
We study the renormalization group evolution and infra-red stable fixed points of the Yukawa couplings and the soft supersymmetry breaking trilinear couplings of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with baryon and lepton number (and R-parity) violation involving the heaviest generations. We show analytically that in the Yukawa sector there is only one infra-red stable fixed point. This corresponds to non-trivial fixed point for the top-, bottom-quark Yukawa couplings and the $B$ violating coupling $λ_{233}''$, and a trivial one for the $τ$-Yukawa coupling. All other possible fixed points…
The Randall-Sundrum (RS) framework has a built in protection against flavour violation, but still generically suffers from little CP problems. The most stringent bound on flavour violation is due to epsilon_K, which is inversely proportional to the fundamental Yukawa scale. Hence the RS epsilon_K problem can be ameliorated by effectively increasing the Yukawa scale with a bulk Higgs, as was recently observed in arXiv:0810.1016. We point out that incorporating the constraint from epsilon'/ε_K, which is proportional to the Yukawa scale, raises the lower bound on the KK scale compared to previous…
We study flavour violation in the minimal SUSY SU(5) GUT assuming all the third generation Yukawa couplings to be due to the renormalizable physics above GUT scale. At large $\tanβ,$ as suggested by Yukawa unification in SU(5), sizable flavour violation in the left (right) slepton (down squark) sector is induced due to renormalization effects of down type Yukawa couplings between GUT and Planck scales in addition to the flavour violation in the right slepton sector. The new flavour physics contribution to $K-\bar K,$ $B-\bar B$ mixing is small but might be of phenomenological interest in the c…
It has recently been shown that F-theory based constructions provide a potentially promising avenue for engineering GUT models which descend to the MSSM. In this note we show that in the presence of background fluxes, these models automatically achieve hierarchical Yukawa matrices in the quark and lepton sectors. At leading order, the existence of a U(1) symmetry which is related to phase rotations of the internal holomorphic coordinates at the brane intersection point leads to rank one Yukawa matrices. Subleading corrections to the internal wave functions from variations in the background flu…
We study supersymmetric models of lepton and baryon number violation based on an abelian family gauge group. Due to possible lepton-Higgs mixing, the lepton violating couplings are related to the Yukawa couplings and may be generated by them even if they were absent in the original theory. Such terms may be dominant and are not given by the naive family charge counting rules. This enhancement mechanism can provide an alignment between lepton-number violating terms and Yukawa couplings: as a result they conserve quark flavour. A natural way of suppressing baryon number violation in this class o…
We discuss the structure of Yukawa couplings in D-brane models in which the SM fermion spectrum appears at the intersections of D-branes wrapping a compact space. In simple toroidal realistic examples one can explicitly compute the Yukawa couplings as a function of the geometrical data summing over world-sheet instanton contributions. A particular simple model with a N = 1 SUSY spectrum and three quark-lepton generations is studied in some detail. Remarkably, one can reproduce the observed spectrum of quark masses and mixings for particular choices of the compact radii and brane locations. In …
We propose to interpret the DAMPE electron excess at 1.5 TeV through scalar or Dirac fermion dark matter (DM) annihilation with doubly charged scalar mediators that have lepton-specific Yukawa couplings. Hierarchy of such lepton-specific Yukawa couplings is generated through the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, so that the dark matter annihilation products can be dominantly electrons. Stringent constraints from LEP2 on intermediate vector boson production can be evaded in our scenarios. In the case of scalar DM, we discuss one scenario with DM annihilating directly to leptons and the other scenario…
We explore the implications of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) with dimension-six terms involving the Higgs boson and third-generation fermion fields on the rate of Higgs boson production and decay into fermions, on the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the electron, and on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We study the consequences of allowing these additional terms for each flavor separately and for combinations of two flavors. We find that a complex $τ$ Yukawa coupling can account for the observed baryon asymmetry $Y_B^{\rm obs}$ within current LHC and EDM bounds. A co…
A $SU(3)_Q \times SU(3)_u \times SU(3)_d$ invariant scalar potential breaking spontaneously the quark flavour symmetry can explain the standard model flavour puzzle. The approximate alignment in flavour space of the vacuum expectation values of the up and down `Yukawa fields' results as a dynamical effect. The observed quark mixing angles, the weak CP violating phase, and hierarchical quark masses can be all reproduced at the cost of introducing additional (auxiliary) scalar multiplets, but without the need of introducing hierarchical parameters.
We consider a SU(5) x U(1)_F GUT-flavor model in which the number of effects that determine the charged fermions Yukawa matrices is much larger than the number of observables, resulting in a hierarchical fermion spectrum with no particular regularities. The GUT-flavor symmetry is broken by flavons in the adjoint of SU(5), realizing a variant of the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism that gives rise to a large number of effective operators. By assuming a common mass for the heavy fields and universality of the fundamental Yukawa couplings, we reduce the number of free parameters to one. The observed fe…
