We show that the Clifford group - the normaliser of the Weyl-Heisenberg group - can be represented by monomial phase-permutation matrices if and only if the dimension is a square number. This simplifies expressions for SIC vectors, and has other applications to SICs and to Mutually Unbiased Bases. Exact solutions for SICs in dimension 16 are presented for the first time.
We study a scheme to implement an asymptotic unitary 3-design. The scheme implements a random Pauli once followed by the implementation of a random transvection Clifford by using state twirling. Thus the scheme is implemented in the form of a quantum channel. We show that when this scheme is implemented $k$ times, then, in the $k \rightarrow \infty$ limit, the overall scheme implements a unitary $3$-design. This is proved by studying the eigendecomposition of the scheme: the $+1$ eigenspace of the scheme coincides with that of an exact unitary $3$-design, and the remaining eigenvalues are boun…

Schur-Weyl duality is a ubiquitous tool in quantum information. At its heart is the statement that the space of operators that commute with the tensor powers of all unitaries is spanned by the permutations of the tensor factors. In this work, we describe a similar duality theory for tensor powers of Clifford unitaries. The Clifford group is a central object in many subfields of quantum information, most prominently in the theory of fault-tolerance. The duality theory has a simple and clean description in terms of finite geometries. We demonstrate its effectiveness in several applications: (1) …
In this article, we develop an algebraic framework of axioms which abstracts various high-level properties of multi-qudit representations of generalized Clifford algebras. We further construct an explicit model and prove that it satisfies these axioms. Strengths of our algebraic framework include the minimality of its assumptions, and the readiness by which one may give an explicit construction satisfying these assumptions. In terms of applications, this algebraic framework provides a solid foundation which opens the way for developing a graphical calculus for multi-qudit representations of ge…

The Clifford group is the quotient of the normalizer of the Weyl-Heisenberg group in dimension $d$ by its centre. We prove that when $d$ is not prime the Clifford group is not a group unitary $2$-design. Furthermore, we prove that the multipartite Clifford group is not a group unitary 2-design except for the known cases wherein the local Hilbert space dimensions are a constant prime number. We also clarify the structure of projective group unitary $2$-designs. We show that the adjoint action induced by a group unitary $2$-design decomposes into exactly two irreducible components; moreover, a g…
