In this study we investigate the effects of turbulent convection on formation of large-scale inhomogeneous magnetic structures by means of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) for convection in solar-type stars. The main idea of this study is the implementation of a new subgrid-scale model for the effective Lorentz force in a three-dimensional nonlinear radiative magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code developed for simulating the upper solar convection zone and lower atmosphere. To this end we derived the energy budget equations, which include the effects of the subgrid-scale turbulence on the Lorentz-force, and implemented the new subgrid-scale turbulence model (TELF-Model) in a three-dimensional nonlinear MHD LES code. Using imposed initial vertical and horizontal uniform magnetic fields in LES with the TELF-Model, we have shown that the magnetic flux tubes formation is started when the initial mean magnetic field is larger than a threshold value (about 100 G). This is in agreement with the theoretical studies by Rogachevskii and Kleeorin (2007). We have determined the vertical profiles of the velocity and magnetic fluctuations, total MHD energy and anisotropy of turbulent magneto-convection, kinetic and current and cross helicities.
A mean-field theory of differential rotation in a density stratified turbulent convection has been developed. This theory is based on a combined effect of the turbulent heat flux and anisotropy of turbulent convection on the Reynolds stress. A coupled system of dynamical budget equations consisting in the equations for the Reynolds stress, the entropy fluctuations and the turbulent heat flux has been solved. To close the system of these equations, the spectral tau approach which is valid for large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, has been applied. The adopted model of the background turbulent conv…
Turbulent convection processes in nature are often found to be organized in a hierarchy of plume structures and flow patterns. The gradual aggregation of convection cells or granules to a supergranule which eventually fills the whole horizontal layer is reported and analysed in spectral element direct numerical simulations of three-dimensional turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection at an aspect ratio of $60$. The formation proceeds over a time span of more than $10^4$ convective time units for the largest accessible Rayleigh number and occurs only when the turbulence is driven by a constant heat…
We revisit a phenomenological description of turbulent thermal convection along the lines proposed originally by Gough (1965) in which eddies grow solely by extracting energy from the unstably stratified mean state and are subsequently destroyed by internal shear instability. This work is part of an ongoing investigation for finding a procedure to calculate the turbulent fluxes of heat and momentum in the presence of a shearing background flow in stars.

The expansion of the rotating fluid will change the vorticity and rotational speed of the expanding region. In turbulent thermal convection, this microscopic effect is preserved. Tracking the fluid micelles shows that the average vorticity varies with density, producing vorticity transport and angular momentum transport from the low-density area to the high-density area, forming a macroscopic vorticity difference and rotational speed difference. Taking the axial thermal convection model of the solar polar region, it can generate axial differential rotation, and the centrifugal force difference…
Small-scale dynamo action is often held responsible for the generation of quiet-Sun magnetic fields. We aim to determine the excitation conditions and saturation level of small-scale dynamos in non-rotating turbulent convection at low magnetic Prandtl numbers. We use high resolution direct numerical simulations of weakly stratified turbulent convection. We find that the critical magnetic Reynolds number for dynamo excitation increases as the magnetic Prandtl number is decreased, which might suggest that small-scale dynamo action is not automatically evident in bodies with small magnetic Prandt…
We study an effect of large-scale coherent structures on global properties of turbulent convection in laboratory experiments in air flow in a rectangular chamber with aspect ratios $A \approx 2$ and $A\approx 4$ (with the Rayleigh numbers varying in the range from $5 \times 10^6$ to $10^8$). The large-scale coherent structures comprise the one-cell and two-cell flow patterns. We found that a main contribution to the turbulence kinetic energy production in turbulent convection with large-scale coherent structures is due to the non-uniform large-scale motions. Turbulence in large Rayleigh number…
We have computed linear non-adiabatic oscillations of luminous red giants using a non-local and anisotropic time-dependent theory of convection. The results show that low-order radial modes can be self-excited. Their excitation is the result of radiation and the coupling between convection and oscillations. Turbulent pressure has important effects on the excitation of oscillations in red variables.
Investigation of the turbulent properties of solar convection is extremely important for understanding the multi-scale dynamics observed on the solar surface. In particular, recent high-resolution observations have revealed ubiquitous vortical structures, and numerical simulations have demonstrated links between vortex tube dynamics and magnetic field organization and have shown the importance of vortex tube interactions in the mechanisms of acoustic wave excitation on the Sun. In this paper we investigate the mechanisms of the formation of vortex tubes in highly-turbulent convective flows nea…
Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection displays a large-scale order in the form of rolls and cells on lengths larger than the layer height once the fluctuations of temperature and velocity are removed. These turbulent superstructures are reminiscent of the patterns close to the onset of convection. They are analyzed by numerical simulations of turbulent convection in fluids at different Prandtl number ranging from 0.005 to 70 and for Rayleigh numbers up to $10^7$. For each case, we identify characteristic scales and times that separate the fast, small-scale turbulent fluctuations from the gradua…
Using direct numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) under free-slip boundary condition, we show that the normalized correlation function between the vertical velocity field and the temperature field, as well as the normalized viscous dissipation rate, scales as $Ra^{-0.22}$ for moderately large Rayleigh number $Ra$. This scaling accounts for the Nusselt number ($Nu$) exponent to be around 0.3 observed in experiments. Numerical simulations also reveal that the above normalized correlation functions are constants for the convection simulation under periodic boundary conditions…
We investigate simulated turbulent flow within thermally driven stellar convection zones. Different driving sources are studied, including cooling at the top of the convectively unstable region, as occurs in surface convection zones; and heating at the base by nuclear burning. The transport of enthalpy and kinetic energy, and the distribution of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation are studied. We emphasize the importance of global constraints on shaping the quasi-steady flow characteristics, and present an analysis of turbulent convection which is posed as a boundary value problem that can be…
We compare 1D nonlocal turbulent convection models with 3D hydrodynamic numerical simulations. We study the validity of closure models and turbulent coefficients by varying the Prandtl number, the P$\acute{e}$clet number, and the depth of the convection zone. Four closure models of the fourth-order moments are evaluated with the 3D simulation data. The performance of the closure models varies among different cases and different fourth-order moments. We solve the dynamic equations of moments together with equations of the thermal structure. Unfortunately, we cannot obtain steady-state solutions…
We present 3D implicit large eddy simulations (ILES) of the turbulent convection in the envelope of a 5 Msun red giant star and in the oxygen-burning shell of a 23 Msun supernova progenitor. The numerical models are analyzed in the framework of 1D Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The effects of pressure fluctuations are more important in the red giant model, owing to larger stratification of the convective zone. We show how this impacts different terms in the mean-field equations. We clarify the driving sources of kinetic energy, and show that the rate of turbulent dissipation…
In this paper we present scaling of large-scale quantities like Peclét and Nusselt numbers, and the dissipation rates of kinetic energy and entropy. Our arguments are based on the scaling of bulk quantities and earlier experimental and simulation results. We also present the inertial-range properties of spectra and fluxes of kinetic energy and entropy.
Inverse cascades of kinetic energy and thermal variance in the subset of vertically homogeneous modes in spectral space are found to cause a slow aggregation to a pair of convective supergranules that eventually fill the whole horizontally extended, three-dimensional, turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection layer when a heat flux is prescribed at the top and bottom. An additional weak rotation of the layer around the vertical axis stops this aggregation at a scale that is smaller than the lateral domain extension and ceases the inverse cascade for the thermal variance. The inverse cascade for the…
Motivated by the dynamics in the deep interiors of many stars, we study the interaction between overshooting convection and the large-scale poloidal fields residing in radiative zones. We have run a suite of 3D Boussinesq numerical calculations in a spherical shell that consists of a convection zone with an underlying stable region that initially compactly contains a dipole field. By varying the strength of the convective driving, we find that, in the less turbulent regime, convection acts as turbulent diffusion that removes the field faster than solely molecular diffusion would do. However, i…
We adopted an unstructured hydrodynamical solver CharLES to the problem of global convection in the Sun. With the aim to investigate the properties of solar turbulent convection and reproduce differential rotation pattern. We performed simulations in two spherical shells, with 1.3 and 10 million cells. In the first, coarse mesh, the solution does not reproduce realistic convection, and is dominated by numerical effects. In the second mesh, thermal conduction leads to cooling of bottom layers, that could not be compensated by solar irradiance. More simulations in the 10M cells mesh should be pe…
We find an instability resulting in generation of large-scale vorticity in a fast rotating small-scale turbulence or turbulent convection with inhomogeneous fluid density along the rotational axis in anelastic approximation. The large-scale instability causes excitation of two modes: (i) the mode with dominant vertical vorticity and with the mean velocity being independent of the vertical coordinate; (ii) the mode with dominant horizontal vorticity and with the mean momentum being independent of the vertical coordinate. The mode with the dominant vertical vorticity can be excited in a fast rot…
It is shown that correlation function of the mean wind velocity in a turbulent thermal convection (Rayleigh number $Ra \sim 10^{11}$) exhibits exponential decay with a very long correlation time, while corresponding largest Lyapunov exponent is certainly positive. These results together with the reconstructed phase portrait indicate presence of a chaotic component in the examined mean wind. Telegraph approximation is also used to study relative contribution of the chaotic and stochastic components to the mean wind fluctuations and an equilibrium between these components has been studied. Since…
Turbulent convection models are thought to be good tools to deal with the convective overshooting in the stellar interior. However, they are too complex to be applied in calculations of stellar structure and evolution. In order to understand the physical processes of the convective overshooting and to simplify the application of turbulent convection models, a semi-analytic solution is necessary. We obtain the approximate solution and asymptotic solution of the turbulent convection model in the overshooting region, and find some important properties of the convective overshooting: I. The oversh…
We investigate the value of horizontal turbulent diffusivity η by numerical calculation of thermal convection. In this study, we introduce a new method whereby the turbulent diffusivity is estimated by monitoring the time devel- opment of the passive scalar, which is initially distributed in a given Gaussian function with a spatial scale d0. Our conclusions are as follows: (1) Assuming the relation η = Lcvrms/3 where vrms is the RMS velocity, the characteristic length Lc is restricted by the shortest one among the pressure (density) scale height and the region depth. (2) The value of turbulent…
We present preliminary results from high resolution magneto-convection simulations where we find the formation of flux concentrations from an initially uniform magnetic field. We compute the effective magnetic pressure but find that the concentrations appear also in places where it is positive. The structures appear in roughly ten convective turnover times and live close to a turbulent diffusion time. The time scales are compatible with the negative effective magnetic pressure instability (NEMPI), although structure formation is not restricted to regions where the effective magnetic pressure i…
Starting from hydrodynamic equations, we have established a set of hydrodynamic equations for average flow and a set of dynamic equations of auto- and cross-correlations of turbulent velocity and temperature fluctuations, following the classic Reynold's treatment of turbulence. The combination of the two sets of equations leads to a complete and self-consistent mathematical expressions ready for the calculations of stellar structure and oscillations. In this paper, non-locality and anisotropy of turbulent convection are concisely presented, together with defining and calibrating of the three c…
We study how anisotropy of turbulent convection affects diffusion of large-scale magnetic fields and the dynamo process on the Sun. The effect of anisotropy is calculated in a mean-field magneto-hydrodynamics framework using the minimal $τ$-approximation. We examine two types of mean-field dynamo models: the well-known benchmark flux-transport model, and a distributed-dynamo model with the subsurface rotational shear layer. For both models we investigate effects of the double-cell meridional circulation, recently suggested by helioseismology. We introduce a parameter of anisotropy as a ratio o…
We present a statistical analysis of turbulent convection in stars within our Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) framework in spherical geometry which we derived from first principles. The primary results reported in this document include: (1) an extensive set of mean-field equations for compressible, multi-species hydrodynamics, and (2) corresponding mean-field data computed from various simulation models. Some supplementary scale analysis data is also presented. The simulation data which is presented includes: (1) shell convection during oxygen burning in a 23 solar mass supernova progen…
We report on simulations of turbulent, rotating, stratified, magnetohydrodynamic convection in spherical wedge geometry. An initially small-scale, random, weak-amplitude magnetic field is amplified by several orders of magnitude in the course of the simulation to form oscillatory large-scale fields in the saturated state of the dynamo. The differential rotation is solar-like (fast equator), but neither coherent meridional poleward circulation nor near-surface shear layer develop in these runs. In addition to a poleward branch of magnetic activity beyond 50 degrees latitude, we find for the fir…

In this paper, we calibrate the coefficients for the one-dimensional Reynolds stress model with the data generated from the three-dimensional numerical simulations of upward overshooting in turbulent compressible convection. It has been found that the calibrated convective and isotropic coefficients are almost the same as those calibrated in the pure convection zone. However, the calibrated diffusive coefficients differ significantly from those calibrated in the pure convection zone. We suspect that the diffusive effect induced by the boundary is stronger than by the adjacent stable zone. We h…
We propose a closure model for the transport of entropy and momentum in astrophysical turbulence, intended for application to rotating stellar convective regions. Our closure model is first presented in the Boussinesq formalism, and compared with laboratory and numerical experimental results on Rayleigh-Benard convection and Homogeneous Rayleigh-Benard convection. The predicted angular momentum transport properties of the turbulence in the slowly rotating case recover the well-known Lambda-effect, with an amplitude uniquely related to the convective heat flux. The model is then extended to the…
Double-diffusive convection, often referred to as semi-convection in astrophysics, occurs in thermally and compositionally stratified systems which are stable according to the Ledoux-criterion but unstable according to the Schwarzchild criterion. This process has been given relatively little attention so far, and its properties remain poorly constrained. In this paper, we present and analyze a set of three-dimensional simulations of this phenomenon in a Cartesian domain under the Boussinesq approximation. We find that in some cases the double-diffusive convection saturates into a state of homo…
Helioseismic investigation has suggested to apply the turbulent convection models (TCMs) to the convective overshooting. Using the turbulent velocity in the overshooting region determined by the TCM, one can deal with the overshooting mixing as a diffusion process, which leads to incomplete mixing. It has been found that this treatment can improve the solar sound speed and the Li depletion in open clusters. In order to investigate whether the TCM can be applied to the overshooting mixing outside the stellar convective core, new observations of the eclipsing binary star HY Vir are adopted to ca…
In a density-stratified turbulent medium the cross helicity <u'.B'> is considered as a result of the interaction of the velocity fluctuations and a large-scale magnetic field. By means of a quasilinear theory and by numerical simulations we find the cross helicity and the mean vertical magnetic field anti-correlated. In the high-conductivity limit the ratio of the helicity and the mean magnetic field equals the ratio of the magnetic eddy diffusivity and the (known) density scale height. The result can be used to predict that the cross helicity at the solar surface exceeds the value of 1 Gauss …
