We have computed linear non-adiabatic oscillations of luminous red giants using a non-local and anisotropic time-dependent theory of convection. The results show that low-order radial modes can be self-excited. Their excitation is the result of radiation and the coupling between convection and oscillations. Turbulent pressure has important effects on the excitation of oscillations in red variables.
We have developed a multidimensional radiation hydrodynamics code to simulate the interaction of radial stellar pulsation and convection for full amplitude pulsating models. Convection is computed using large eddy simulations. Here we perform three-dimensional simulations of RR Lyrae stars for comparison with previously reported two-dimensional simulations. We find that the time dependent behavior of the peak convective flux on pulsation phase is very similar in both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional calculations. The growth rates of the pulsation in the two-dimensional calculations ar…
We have developed a three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics code to simulate the interaction of convection and radial pulsation in classical variable stars. One key goal is the ability to carry these simulations to full amplitude in order to compare them with observed light curves. Previous multi-dimensional calculations were prevented from reaching full amplitude because of drift in the radial coordinate system, due to the algorithm defining radial movement of the coordinate system during the pulsation cycle. We have removed this difficulty by defining our radial coordinate flow algorithm t…
This article reviews our current understanding of modelling convection dynamics in stars. Several semi-analytical time-dependent convection models have been proposed for pulsating one-dimensional stellar structures with different formulations for how the convective turbulent velocity field couples with the global stellar oscillations. In this review we put emphasis on two, widely used, time-dependent convection formulations for estimating pulsation properties in one-dimensional stellar models. Applications to pulsating stars are presented with results for oscillation properties, such as the ef…
In cold Cepheids close to the red edge of the classical instability strip, a strong coupling between the stellar pulsations and the surface convective motions occurs. This coupling is by now poorly described by 1-D models of convection, the so-called "time-dependent convection models" (TDC). The intrinsic weakness of such models comes from the large number of unconstrained free parameters entering in the description of turbulent convection. A way to overcome these limits is to compute two-dimensional direct simulations (DNS), in which all the nonlinearities are correctly solved. Two-dimensiona…
We report on modelling in stellar astrophysics with the ANTARES code. First, we describe properties of turbulence in solar granulation as seen in high-resolution calculations. Then, we turn to the first 2D model of pulsation-convection interaction in a cepheid. We discuss properties of the outer and the HEII ionization zone. Thirdly, we report on our work regarding models of semiconvection in the context of stellar physics.
We are developing a 3D radiation hydrodynamics code to simulate the interaction of convection and pulsation in classical variable stars. One key goal is the ability to carry these simulations to full amplitude in order to compare them with observed light and velocity curves. Previous 2D calculations were prevented from doing this because of drift in the radial coordinate system, due to the algorithm defining radial movement of the coordinate system during the pulsation cycle. We remove this difficulty by defining our coordinate system flow algorithm to require that the mass in a spherical shel…
Context: Observations of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with increasing spatial resolution reveal new layers of complexity of atmospheric processes on a variety of scales. Aim: To analyze the physical mechanisms that cause asymmetries and surface structures in observed images, we use detailed 3D dynamical simulations of AGB stars; these simulations self-consistently describe convection and pulsations. Methods: We used the CO5BOLD radiation-hydrodynamics code to produce an exploratory grid of global "star-in-a-box" models of the outer convective envelope and the inner atmosphere of AGB sta…
The ANTARES code has been designed for simulation of astrophysical flows in a variety of situations, in particular in the context of stellar physics. Here, we describe extensions as necessary to model the interaction of pulsation and convection in classical pulsating stars. These extensions encomprise the introduction of a spherical grid, movable in the radial direction, specific forms of grid-refinement and considerations regarding radiative transfer. We then present the basic parameters of the cepheid we study more closely. For that star we provide a short discussion of patterns of the H+HeI…
The contour method is a new approach to calculating the non-adiabatic pulsation frequencies of stars. These frequencies can be found by solving for the complex roots of a characteristic equation constructed from the linear non-adiabatic stellar pulsation equations. A complex-root solver requires an initial trial frequency for each non adiabatic root. A standard method for obtaining initial trial frequencies is to use a star's adiabatic pulsation frequencies, but this method can fail to converge to non-adiabatic roots, especially as the growth and/or damping rate of the pulsations becomes large…
Starting from hydrodynamic equations, we have established a set of hydrodynamic equations for average flow and a set of dynamic equations of auto- and cross-correlations of turbulent velocity and temperature fluctuations, following the classic Reynold's treatment of turbulence. The combination of the two sets of equations leads to a complete and self-consistent mathematical expressions ready for the calculations of stellar structure and oscillations. In this paper, non-locality and anisotropy of turbulent convection are concisely presented, together with defining and calibrating of the three c…
Three dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of full amplitude RR Lyrae stars have been computed for several models across the instability strip. The three dimensional nature of the calculations allows convection to be treated without reference to a phenomenological approach such as the local mixing length theory. Specifically, the time dependent interaction of the large scale eddies and the radial pulsation is controlled by the conservation laws, while the effects of smaller convective eddies are simulated by an eddy viscosity model. The light amplitudes for these calculations are quite similar…
One of the greatest challenges in interpreting the pulsations of rapidly rotating stars is mode identification, i.e. correctly matching theoretical modes to observed pulsation frequencies. Indeed, the latest observations as well as current theoretical results show the complexity of pulsation spectra in such stars, and the lack of easily recognisable patterns. In the present contribution, the latest results on non-adiabatic effects in such pulsations are described, and we show how these come into play when identifying modes. These calculations fully take into account the effects of rapid rotati…
Analyses of recent observations of the sole classical Cepheid in the Kepler field, V1154 Cygni, found random changes of about 30 minutes in the pulsation period. These period changes challenge standard theories of pulsation and evolution because the period change is non-secular, and explaining this period jitter is necessary for understanding stellar evolution and the role of Cepheids as precise standard candles. We suggest that convection and convective hot spots can explain the observed period jitter. Convective hot spots alter the timing of flux maximum and minimum in the Cepheid light curv…
In [arXiv: 1312.1118] the author has found the formal series describing radial adiabatic pulsations of polytropes. These series include a time-dependent function, unknown yet. If a polytrope is uniform this function is obtainable; it is governed by the well-known equation of Bhatnagar and Kothari. In the present work it is shown that the pulsations of a polytrope with a near-equilibrium stratification are described by the same equation. These pulsations are nonlinear and their periods do not equal to the periods of the standard model. The periods of the vanishingly small pulsations are obtaine…
One of the largest sources of uncertainty in stellar models is caused by the treatment of convection in stellar envelopes. One dimensional stellar models often make use of the mixing length or equivalent approximations to describe convection, all of which depend on various free parameters. There have been attempts to rectify this by using 3D radiative-hydrodynamic simulations of stellar convection, and in trying to extract an equivalent mixing length from the simulations. In this paper we show that the entropy of the deeper, adiabatic layers in these simulations can be expressed as a simple fu…
By using a non-local and time-dependent convection theory, we have calculated radial and low-degree non-radial oscillations for stellar evolutionary models with $M=1.4$--3.0\,$\mathrm{M}_\odot$. The results of our study predict theoretical instability strips for $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus stars, which overlap with each other. The strip of $γ$ Doradus is slightly redder in colour than that of $δ$ Scuti. We have paid great attention to the excitation and stabilization mechanisms for these two types of oscillations, and we conclude that radiative $κ$ mechanism plays a major role in the excitation …
Context: we study the convection-pulsation coupling that occurs in cold Cepheids close to the red edge of the classical instability strip. In these stars, the surface convective zone is supposed to stabilise the radial oscillations excited by the kappa-mechanism. Aims: we study the influence of the convective motions onto the amplitude and the nonlinear saturation of acoustic modes excited by kappa-mechanism. We are interested in determining the physical conditions needed to lead to a quenching of oscillations by convection. Methods: we compute two-dimensional nonlinear simulations (DNS) of th…
Tidal forces in eccentric binary stars known as heartbeat stars excite detectable oscillations that shed light on the processes of tidal synchronization and circularization. We examine the pulsation phases of tidally excited oscillations (TEOs) in heartbeat binary systems. The target list includes four published heartbeat binaries and four additional systems observed by {\it Kepler}. To the first order, the pulsation phases of TEOs can be explained by the geometric effect of the dominant $l=2$, $m=0$, or $\pm 2$ modes assuming pulsations are adiabatic. We found that this simple theoretical int…
We present multidimensional modeling of convection and oscillations in main-sequence stars somewhat more massive than the Sun, using three separate approaches: 1) Using the 3-D planar StellarBox radiation hydrodynamics code to model the envelope convection zone and part of the radiative zone. Our goals are to examine the interaction of stellar pulsations with turbulent convection in the envelope, excitation of acoustic modes, and the role of convective overshooting; 2) Applying the spherical 3-D MHD ASH (Anelastic Spherical Harmonics) code to simulate the core convection and radiative zone. Ou…
The standard theory of pulsations deals with the frequencies and growth rates of infinitesimal perturbations in a stellar model. Modes which are calculated to be linearly driven should increase their amplitudes exponentially with time; the fact that nearly constant amplitudes are usually observed is evidence that nonlinear mechanisms inhibit the growth of finite amplitude pulsations. Models predict that the mass of DAV convection zones is very sensitive to temperature (i.e., $M_{\text{CZ}} \propto T_{\text{eff}}^{-90}$) leading to the possibility that even "small amplitude" pulsators may exper…
Non-local, time-dependent convection models have been used to explain the location of double-mode pulsations in Cepheids in the HR diagram as well as the existence and location of the red edge of the instability strip. These properties are highly sensitive to model parameters. We use 2D radiation hydrodynamical simulations with realistic microphysics and grey radiative-transfer to model a short period Cepheid. The simulations show that the strength of the convection zone varies significantly over the pulsation period and exhibits a phase shift relative to the variations in radius. We evaluate …
In this short review on stellar convection dynamics I address the following, currently very topical, issues: (1) the surface effects of the Reynolds stresses and nonadiabaticity on solar-like pulsation frequencies, and (2) oscillation mode lifetimes of stochastically excited oscillations in red giants computed with different time-dependent convection formulations.
In this review I present an overview of our current understanding of the physical mechanisms that are responsible for the excitation of pulsations in stars with surface convection zones. These are typically cooler stars such as the Delta Scuti stars, and stars supporting solar-like oscillations.
We investigate the pulsational stability of massive (M >~ 120 Msun) main sequence stars of a range of metallicities, including primordial, Population III stars. We include a formulation of convective damping motivated by numerical simulations of the interaction between convection and periodic shear flows. We find that convective viscosity is likely strong enough to stabilize radial pulsations whenever nuclear-burning (the epsilon-mechanism) is the dominant source of driving. This suggests that massive main sequence stars with Z <~ 2 x 10^-3 are pulsationally stable and are unlikely to experien…
We investigate the pulsation properties of stellar models representative of $δ$ Scuti and $γ$ Doradus variables. We have calculated a grid of stellar models from 1.2 to 2.2 M$_{\odot}$, including the effects of both rotation and convective overshoot using MESA, and we investigate the pulsation properties of these models using GYRE. We discuss observable patterns in the frequency spacing for $p$ modes and the period spacings for g modes. Using the observable patterns in g mode period spacings, it may be possible to observationally constrain the convective overshoot and rotation of a model. We a…
We report the frequency analysis of a known roAp star, HD 86181 (TIC 469246567), with new inferences from TESS data. We derive the rotation frequency to be $ν_{rot}$ = 0.48753 $\pm$ 0.00001d$^{-1}$. The pulsation frequency spectrum is rich, consisting of two doublets and one quintuplet, which we interpret to be oblique pulsation multiplets from consecutive, high-overtone dipole, quadrupole and dipole modes. The central frequency of the quintuplet is 232.7701d$^{-1}$ (2.694 mHz). The phases of the sidelobes, the pulsation phase modulation, and a spherical harmonic decomposition all show that th…

The one-zone model of non-adiabatic radial stellar pulsations is considered. Contrary to the original Zhevakin's work the triple-alpha process is the basic thermonuclear fusion reaction within the star under investigation. The model has four dimensionless numbers. For real Cepheids, the magnitude of each of these dimensionless numbers is estimated. It is found that dimensionless numbers associated with both radiation confinement and thermonuclear energy generation are sufficiently less than 1, that is, pure hydrodynamic effects prevail in the model studied. For this case, the model system redu…
The phenomenon of double-periodic Cepheid pulsation is still poorly understood. Recently we rediscussed the problem of modelling the double-periodic pulsation with non-linear hydrocodes. We showed that the published non-resonant double-mode models are incorrect, because they exclude the negative buoyancy effects. Aims. We continue our efforts to verify whether the Kuhfuss one-equation convection model with negative buoyancy included can reproduce the double-periodic Cepheid pulsation. Methods. Using the direct time integration hydrocode, which implements the Kuhfuss convection model, we search…
Bridging theory and observations in stellar pulsations: The impact of convection and metallicity on the instability strips of Classical and Type-II Cepheids
Models predict that the mass of convection zones in pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere (DAV) white dwarfs is very sensitive to temperature (i.e., $M_{\rm CZ} \propto T_{\rm eff}^{-90}$), leading to the possibility that…
We have extended the ANTARES code to simulate the coupling of pulsation with convection in Cepheid-like variables in an increasingly realistic way, in particular in multidimensions, 2D at this stage. Present days models of radially pulsating stars assume radial symmetry and have the pulsation-convection interaction included via model equations containing ad hoc closures and moreover parameters whose values are barely known. We intend to construct ever more realistic multidimensional models of Cepheids. In the present paper, the first of a series, we describe the basic numerical approach and ho…
The discovery of pulsations in some low-mass white dwarfs, including the so-called extremely low-mass white dwarfs, has opened the unprecedented opportunity of probing the internal structure of these ancient stars. We present a detailed adiabatic pulsational study of these stars based on a new set of He-core white-dwarf models with masses ranging from $0.1554$ to $0.4352 M_{\odot}$ derived by computing the non-conservative evolution of a binary system consisting of an initially $1 M_{\odot}$ ZAMS star and a $1.4 M_{\odot}$ neutron star. We computed adiabatic radial ($\ell= 0$) and non-radial (…

Convective driving, the mechanism originally proposed by Brickhill (1991, 1983) for pulsating white dwarf stars, has gained general acceptance as the generic linear instability mechanism in DAV and DBV white dwarfs. This physical mechanism naturally leads to a nonlinear formulation, reproducing the observed light curves of many pulsating white dwarfs. This numerical model can also provide information on the average depth of a star's convection zone and the inclination angle of its pulsation axis. In this paper, we give two sets of results of nonlinear light curve fits to data on the DBV GD 358…
Within the framework of non-local time-dependent stellar convection theory, we study in detail the effect of turbulent anisotropy on stellar pulsation stability. The results show that anisotropy has no substantial influence on pulsation stability of g modes and low-order (radial order $n_\mathrm{r}<5$) p modes. The effect of turbulent anisotropy increases as the radial order increases. When turbulent anisotropy is neglected, most of high-order ($n_\mathrm{r}>5$) p modes of all low-temperature stars become unstable. Fortunately, within a wide range of the anisotropic parameter $c_3$, stellar pu…
The last decade lead to major progress in asteroseismology and stellar physics with the advent of space missions. Thanks to the richness and precision of current oscillation spectra, sophisticated seismic probing techniques allow us now to pinpoint the limits of our current models of stellar structure and evolution. However, the accuracy of the seismic diagnosis depends on the accuracy of the pulsation models. In solar-like oscillations, the main source of inaccuracy comes from the near-surface layers where the oscillations are non-adiabatic and strongly coupled with turbulent convection. Some…
Double-mode Cepheid behaviour may arise either from non-resonant or resonant mode interaction. Inclusion of turbulent convection into pulsation codes by Kollath et al. (1998) led to stable double-mode F+1O Cepheid pulsation. However, our recent computations (Smolec & Moskalik 2008) indicate, that these models resulted from incorrect neglect of negative buoyancy effects. Once these effects are taken into account, only some resonant double-mode models could be found. These models do not solve the puzzle of double-mode phenomenon, as they are restricted to narrow parameter ranges. For majority of…
We have calculated the pulsations of massive stars using a nonlinear hydrodynamic code including time-dependent convection. The basic structure models are based on a standard grid published by Meynet et al. (1994). Using the basic structure, we calculated envelope models, which include the outer few percent of the star. These models go down to depths of at least 2 million K. These models, which range from 40 to 85 solar masses, show a range of pulsation behaviours. We find models with very long period pulsations ( $>$ 100 d), resulting in high amplitude changes in the surface properties. We al…

A systematic investigation on the third dredge up in a 3M$_{\odot}$, solar metallicity AGB star will be presented. The model evolves from the main sequence up to the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). Intermediate mass stars are important because they contribute significantly via the slow neutron capture nucleosynthesis. The aim of this work is to gain insight on the behaviour of the AGB star during thermal pulsation. This investigation is based on an extended numerical simulation of the evolutionary phases and full, consistent AGB model calculations. In particular, the convective structure during…

Recent numerical and theoretical considerations have shown that low-degree acoustic modes in rapidly rotating stars follow an asymptotic formula and recent observations of pulsations in rapidly rotating delta Scuti stars seem to match these expectations. However, a key question is whether strong gradients or discontinuities can adversely affect this pattern to the point of hindering its identification. Other important questions are how rotational splittings are affected by the 2D rotation profiles expected from baroclinic effects and whether it is possible to probe the rotation profile using t…
RR Lyrae stars play an important role as distance indicators and stellar population tracers. In this context the construction of accurate pulsation models is crucial to understand the observed properties and to constrain the intrinsic stellar parameters of these pulsators. The physical mechanism driving pulsation in RR Lyrae stars has been known since the middle of the 20th century and many efforts have been performed during the last few decades in the construction of more and more refined pulsation models. In particular, nonlinear pulsation models including a nonlocal time-dependent treatment…
A leap forward has been performed due to the space-borne missions, MOST, CoRoT and Kepler. They provided a wealth of observational data, and more precisely oscillation spectra, which have been (and are still) exploited to infer the internal structure of stars. While an adiabatic approach is often sufficient to get information on the stellar equilibrium structures it is not sufficient to get a full understanding of the physics of the oscillation. Indeed, it does not permit one to answer some fundamental questions about the oscillations, such as: What are the physical mechanisms responsible for …
Here we present CAFein, a new computational tool for investigating radiative dissipation of dynamic tides in close binaries and of non-adiabatic, non-radial stellar oscillations in isolated stars in the linear regime. For the latter, CAFein computes the non-adiabatic eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of detailed stellar models. The code is based on the so-called Riccati method, a numerical algorithm that has been successfully applied to a variety of stellar pulsators, and which doesn't suffer of the major drawbacks of commonly used shooting and relaxation schemes. Here we present an extensio…
We present a new grid of convective BL Herculis models using the state-of-the-art 1D non-linear radial stellar pulsation tool MESA-RSP. We investigate the impact of metallicity and four sets of different convection parameters on multi-wavelength properties. Non-linear models were computed for periods typical for BL Her stars, i.e. $1 \leq \mathrm{P (days)} \leq 4$ covering a wide range of input parameters - metallicity ($-2.0\; \mathrm{dex} \leq \mathrm{[Fe/H]} \leq 0.0\; \mathrm{dex}$), stellar mass (0.5M$_{\odot}$-0.8M$_{\odot}$), luminosity (50L$_{\odot}$-300L$_{\odot}$) and effective tempe…
Stars with spectral types earlier than about F0 on (or close) to the main sequence have long been believed to lack observable surface convection, although evolutionary models of A-type stars do predict very thin surface convective zones. We present evidence for granulation in two delta Scuti stars of spectral type A2: HD174936 and HD50844. Recent analyses of space-based CoRoT (Convection, Rotation, and planetary Transits) data revealed up to some 1000 frequencies in the photometry of these stars. The frequencies were interpreted as individual pulsation modes. If true, there must be large numbe…
Main sequence, solar-like stars (M < 1.5 Msun) have outer convective envelopes that are sufficiently thick to affect significantly their overall structure. The radii of these stars, in particular, are sensitive to the details of inefficient, super-adiabatic convection occurring in their outermost layers. The standard treatment of convection in stellar evolution models, based on the Mixing-Length Theory (MLT), provides only a very approximate description of convection in the super-adiabatic regime. Moreover, it contains a free parameter, alpha_MLT, whose standard calibration is based on the Sun…
HD 187547 was the first candidate that led to the suggestion that solar-like oscillations are present in delta Scuti stars. Longer observations, however, show that the modes interpreted as solar-like oscillations have either very long mode lifetimes, longer than 960 days, or are coherent. These results are incompatible with the nature of `pure' stochastic excitation as observed in solar-like stars. Nonetheless, one point is certain: the opacity mechanism alone cannot explain the oscillation spectrum of HD 187547. Here we present new theoretical investigations showing that convection dynamics c…
We have used high-speed spectroscopy of the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD99563 to study the pulsation amplitude and phase behaviour of elements in its stratified atmosphere over one 2.91-d rotation cycle. We identify spectral features related to patches in the surface distribution of chemical elements and study the pulsation amplitudes and phases as the patches move across the stellar disk. The variations are consistent with a distorted nonradial dipole pulsation mode. We measure a 1.6 km/s rotational variation in the mean radial velocities of H-alpha and argue that this is the first o…
Under the Nainital-Cape Survey, eight $δ\,$Scuti type pulsators have been discovered with the pulsation periods in the range of several minutes to few hours. In order to understand these observed pulsational variabilities, we have performed non-adiabatic linear stability analyses in models of these stars having mass in the range of 1 to 3 M$_{\odot}$. Several low order p-modes are found to be unstable where the pulsation periods associated with these unstable modes are in good agreement with the observed periods. Particularly for HD$\,$118660, HD$\,$113878, HD$\,$102480, HD$\,$98851, and HD$\,…
Linear damping rates and modal frequency corrections of radial oscillation modes in selected LEGACY main-sequence stars are estimated by means of a nonadiabatic stability analysis. The selected stellar sample covers stars observed by Kepler with a large range of surface temperatures and surface gravities. A nonlocal, time-dependent convection model is perturbed to assess stability against pulsation modes. The mixing-length parameter is calibrated to the surface-convection-zone depth of a stellar model obtained from fitting adiabatic frequencies to the LEGACY observations, and two of the nonloc…
Today, asteroseismology is entering in its golden age thanks to the observations provided by the CoRoT and Kepler space missions. In particular, we will make significant progresses in the understanding of the structure and evolution of solar-like oscillating stars. These stars have acoustic modes stochastically excited by the near-surface convection. Thanks to the observations already provided by these two missions, we have detected several hundred of stars showing solar-like oscillations in the main sequence and several thousands in the red- giant branch. Here, I give an overview of the prese…
Excitation of radial oscillations in population I (X=0.7, Z=0.02) red supergiants is investigated using the solution of the equations of radiation hydrodynamics and turbulent convection. The core helium burning stars with masses 8M_odot <= M <= 20M_odot end effective temperatures T_eff < 4000K are shown to be unstable against radial pulsations in the fundamental mode. The oscillation periods range between 45 and 1180 days. The pulsational instability is due to the kappa-mechanism in the hydrogen and helium ionization zones. Radial pulsations of stars with mass M < 15M_odot are strictly periodi…
