For $g>0$, we construct $g+1$ Legendrian embeddings of a surface of genus $g$ into $J^1(R^2)=R^5$ which lie in pairwise distinct Legendrian isotopy classes and which all have $g+1$ transverse Reeb chords ($g+1$ is the conjecturally minimal number of chords). Furthermore, for $g$ of the $g+1$ embeddings the Legendrian contact homology DGA does not admit any augmentation over $Z/2Z$, and hence cannot be linearized. We also investigate these surfaces from the point of view of the theory of generating families. Finally, we consider Legendrian spheres and planes in $J^1(S^2)$ from a similar perspective.
Given a chord-generic horizontally displaceable Legendrian submanifold $Λ\subset P\times \mathbb R$ with the property that its characteristic algebra admits a finite-dimensional matrix representation, we prove an Arnold-type lower bound for the number of Reeb chords on $Λ$. This result is a generalization of the results of Ekholm-Etnyre-Sullivan and Ekholm-Etnyre-Sabloff which hold for Legendrian submanifolds whose Chekanov-Eliashberg algebras admit augmentations. We also provide examples of Legendrian submanifolds $Λ$ of $\mathbb C^{n}\times \mathbb R$, $n \ge 1$, whose characteristic algebra…
We give a construction of embedded contact homology (ECH) for a contact $3$-manifold $Y$ with convex sutured boundary and a pair of Legendrians $Λ_+$ and $Λ_-$ contained in $\partial Y$ satisfying an exactness condition. The chain complex is generated by certain configurations of closed Reeb orbits of $Y$ and Reeb chords of $Λ_+$ to $Λ_-$. The main ingredients include: a general Legendrian adjunction formula for curves in $\mathbb{R} \times Y$ with boundary on $\mathbb{R} \times Λ$; a relative writhe bound for curves in contact $3$-manifolds asymptotic to Reeb chords; and a Legendrian ECH inde…
Exponential convergence type results are proved for holomorphic curves in the symplectization of a contact manifold $Y$ with boundary on a Legendrian cylinder. The results are proven in all dimensions, and generalize earlier work specific to dimension 3.
We construct non-compact contact manifolds containing compact Legendrians which can be displaced from their Reeb flow with arbitrarily small oscillation energy. We use this to show the Shelukhin-Chekanov-Hofer pseudo-metric considered by Rosen and Zhang is degenerate on the isotopy class of the constructed Legendrians. Other aspects related to oscillation energy of Legendrian isotopies are explored.
In this paper we study the growth rate of a version of Legendrian contact homology, which we call strip Legendrian contact homology, in 3-dimensional contact manifolds and its relation to the topological entropy of Reeb flows. We show that: if for a pair of Legendrian knots in a contact 3-manifold $(M,ξ)$ the strip Legendrian contact homology is defined and has exponential homotopical growth with respect to the action, then every Reeb flow on $(M,ξ)$ has positive topological entropy. This has the following dynamical consequence: for all Reeb flows (even degenerate ones) on $(M,ξ)$ the number o…
We prove that the number of Reeb chords between a Legendrian submanifold and its contact Hamiltonian push-off is at least the sum of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Betti numbers of the submanifold, provided that the contact isotopy is sufficiently small when compared to the smallest Reeb chord on the Legendrian. Moreover, the established invariance enables us to use two different contact forms: one for the count of Reeb chords and another for the measure of the smallest length, under the assumption that there is a suitable symplectic cobordism from the latter to the former. The size of the contact isotopy…
Given an open book decomposition of a contact three man-ifold (M, $ξ$) with pseudo-Anosov monodromy and fractional Dehn twist coefficient c = k n, we construct a Legendrian knot $Λ$ close to the stable foliation of a page, together with a small Legendrian pushoff $Λ$. When k $\ge$ 5, we apply the techniques of [CH2] to show that the strip Legen-drian contact homology of $Λ$ $\rightarrow$ $Λ$ is well-defined and has an exponential growth property. The work [Al2] then implies that all Reeb vector fields for $ξ$ have positive topological entropy.
In this short note we observe that the boundary of a properly embedded compact exact Lagrangian sub-manifolds in a subcritical Weinstein domain $X$ necessarily admits Reeb chords. The existence of this Reeb chords either follows from an obstruction to the deformation of the boundary to a cylinder over a Legendrian sub-manifold or from the fact that the wrapped Floer homology of the Lagrangian vanishes once this boundary have been "collared".
We construct a Legendrian 2-torus in the 1-jet space of $S^1\times\R$ (or of $\R^2$) from a loop of Legendrian knots in the 1-jet space of $\R$. The differential graded algebra (DGA) for the Legendrian contact homology of the torus is explicitly computed in terms of the DGA of the knot and the monodromy operator of the loop. The contact homology of the torus is shown to depend only on the chain homotopy type of the monodromy operator. The construction leads to many new examples of Legendrian knotted tori. In particular, it allows us to construct a Legendrian torus with DGA which does not admit…
In this article we prove existence of Reeb orbits for Bohr-Sommerfeld Legendrians in certain pre-quantization spaces. We give a quantitative estimate from below. These estimates are obtained by studying Floer homology for fibre-wise quadratic Hamiltonian functions on negative line bundles.
In Part I, we establish nonlinear ellipticity of the equation of contact instantons with Legendrian boundary condition on punctured Riemann surfaces by proving the a priori elliptic coercive estimates for the contact instantons with Legendrian boundary condition, and prove an asymptotic exponential $C^\infty$-convergence result at a puncture under the uniform $C^1$ bound. We prove that the asymptotic charge of contact instantons at the punctures under the Legendrian boundary condition vanishes. This eliminates the phenomenon of the appearance of spiraling cusp instanton along a Reeb core, whic…
First, we show that conjugate Lagrangian fillings, associated to plabic graphs, and Lagrangian fillings obtained as Reeb pinching sequences are both Hamiltonian isotopic to Lagrangian projections of Legendrian weaves. In general, we establish a series of new Reidemeister moves for hybrid Lagrangian surfaces. These allow for explicit combinatorial isotopies between the different types of Lagrangian fillings and we use them to show that Legendrian weaves indeed generalize these previously known combinatorial methods to construct Lagrangian fillings. This generalization is strict, as weaves are t…
This is the first of a series of papers in preparation in which we study the Hamiltonian perturbed contact instantons with Legendrian boundary condition and its applications. In this paper, we prove that the asymptotic charge of contact instantons at the punctures under the Legendrian boundary condition vanishes, which eliminates the phenomenon of the appearance of `spiraling cusp instanton along a Reeb core'. This removes the only remaining obstacle towards the compactification and the Fredholm theory of the moduli space of contact instantons in the open string case, which plagues the closed …
This paper and its sequel prove that every Legendrian knot in a closed three-manifold with a contact form has a Reeb chord. The present paper deduces this result from another theorem, asserting that an exact symplectic cobordism between contact 3-manifolds induces a map on (filtered) embedded contact homology satisfying certain axioms. The latter theorem will be proved in the sequel using Seiberg-Witten theory.
