In the present contribution the construction of particle physics models in theories with fuzzy extra dimensions is discussed. We focus on a bottom-up approach where the structure of a higher-dimensional theory arises within ordinary four-dimensional field theory via an appropriate mechanism based on spontaneous symmetry breaking. Subsequently, possible ways to obtain particle physics models with realistic spectrum in this framework are exhibited.
We propose gauge-Higgs unification in fuzzy extra dimensions as a possible solution to the Higgs naturalness problem. In our approach, the fuzzy extra dimensions are created spontaneously as a vacuum solution of certain four-dimensional gauge theory. As an example, we construct a model which has a fuzzy torus as its vacuum. The Higgs field in our model is associated with the Wilson loop wrapped on the fuzzy torus. We show that the quadratic divergence in the mass of the Higgs field in the one-loop effective potential is absent. We then argue based on symmetries that the quantum corrections to …
Theories defined in higher than four dimensions have been used in various frameworks and have a long and interesting history. Here we review certain attempts, developed over the last years, towards the construction of unified particle physics models in the context of higher-dimensional gauge theories with non-commutative extra dimensions. These ideas have been developed in two complementary ways, namely (i) starting with a higher-dimensional gauge theory and dimensionally reducing it to four dimensions over fuzzy internal spaces and (ii) starting with a four-dimensional, renormalizable gauge t…
We briefly review the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction (CSDR) programme and the best model constructed so far and then we present some details of the corresponding programme in the case that the extra dimensions are considered to be fuzzy. In particular, we present a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Super Yang Mills Theory, orbifolded by $\mathbb{Z}_3$, which mimics the behaviour of a dimensionally reduced $\mathcal{N} = 1$, 10-dimensional gauge theory over a set of fuzzy spheres at intermediate high scales and leads to the trinification GUT $SU(3)^3$ at slightly lower, which in turn can be…
We present a renormalizable 4-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with a suitable multiplet of scalar fields, which dynamically develops extra dimensions in the form of a fuzzy sphere S^2. We explicitly find the tower of massive Kaluza-Klein modes consistent with an interpretation as gauge theory on M^4 x S^2, the scalars being interpreted as gauge fields on S^2. The gauge group is broken dynamically, and the low-energy content of the model is determined. Depending on the parameters of the model the low-energy gauge group can be SU(n), or broken further to SU(n_1) x SU(n_2) x U(1), with mass scale …
We first briefly review the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction (CSDR) programme and present the results of the best model so far, based on the $\mathcal{N} = 1$, $d = 10$, $E_8$ gauge theory reduced over the nearly-Kähler manifold $SU(3)/U(1)\times U(1)$. Then, we present the adjustment of the CSDR programme in the case that the extra dimensions are considered to be fuzzy coset spaces and then, the best model constructed in this framework, too, which is the trinification GUT, $SU(3)^3$.
We study a noncommutative gauge theory on a fuzzy four-sphere. The idea is to use a matrix model with a fifth-rank Chern-Simons term and to expand matrices around the fuzzy four-sphere which corresponds to a classical solution of this model. We need extra degrees of freedom since algebra of coordinates does not close on the fuzzy four-sphere. In such a construction, a fuzzy two sphere is added at each point on the fuzzy four-sphere as extra degrees of freedom. It is interesting that fields on the fuzzy four-sphere have higher spins due to the extra degrees of freedom. We also consider a theory…
We first review the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction (CSDR) programme and present the best model constructed so far based on the $\mathcal{N} = 1$, $10$-dimensional $E_8$ gauge theory reduced over the nearly-Kähler manifold $SU(3)/U(1)\times U(1)$ with the additional use of the Wilson flux mechanism. Then we present the corresponding programme in the case that the extra dimensions are considered to be fuzzy coset spaces and the best model that has been constructed in this framework too. In both cases the best model appears to be the trinification GUT $SU(3)^3$.
Finite Unified Theories (FUTs) are N=1 supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories, which can be made all-loop finite, both in the dimensionless (gauge and Yukawa couplings) and dimensionful (soft supersymmetry breaking terms) sectors. This remarkable property, based on the reduction of couplings at the quantum level, provides a drastic reduction in the number of free parameters, which in turn leads to an accurate prediction of the top quark mass in the dimensionless sector, and predictions for the Higgs boson mass and the supersymmetric spectrum in the dimensionful sector. Here we examine the predi…
We revisit an orbifold matrix model obtained as a restriction of the type IIB matrix model on a Z_3-invariant sector. An investigation of its moduli space of vacua is performed and issues related to chiral gauge theory and gravity are discussed. Modifications of the orbifolded model triggered by Chern-Simons or mass deformations are also analyzed. Certain vacua of the modified models exhibit higher-dimensional behaviour with internal geometries related to fuzzy spheres.
In this article, we explore the low energy structure of a $U(3)$ gauge theory over spaces with fuzzy sphere(s) as extra dimensions. In particular, we determine the equivariant parametrization of the gauge fields, which transform either invariantly or as vectors under the combined action of $SU(2)$ rotations of the fuzzy spheres and those $U(3)$ gauge transformations generated by $SU(2) \subset U(3)$ carrying the spin $1$ irreducible representation of $SU(2)$. The cases of a single fuzzy sphere $S_F^2$ and a particular direct sum of concentric fuzzy spheres, $S_F^{2 \, Int}$, covering the monop…
We consider certain vacua of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with the same field content as the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, resulting from potentials which break the N=4 supersymmetry as well as its global SO(6) symmetry down to SO(3) x SO(3). We show that the theory behaves at intermediate scales as Yang-Mills theory on M^4 x S^2 x S^2, where the extra dimensions are fuzzy spheres with magnetic fluxes. We determine in particular the structure of the zero modes due to the fluxes, which leads to low-energy mirror models.

We examine gauge theories on Minkowski space-time times fuzzy coset spaces. This means that the extra space dimensions instead of being a continuous coset space S/R are a corresponding finite matrix approximation. The gauge theory defined on this non-commutative setup is reduced to four dimensions and the rules of the corresponding dimensional reduction are established. We investigate in particular the case of the fuzzy sphere including the dimensional reduction of fermion fields.
We consider a U(2) Yang-Mills theory on M x S_F^2 where M is an arbitrary noncommutative manifold and S_F^2 is a fuzzy sphere spontaneously generated from a noncommutative U(N) Yang-Mills theory on M, coupled to a triplet of scalars in the adjoint of U(N). Employing the SU(2)-equivariant gauge field constructed in arXiv:0905.2338, we perform the dimensional reduction of the theory over the fuzzy sphere. The emergent model is a noncommutative U(1) gauge theory coupled adjointly to a set of scalar fields. We study this model on the Groenewald-Moyal plane and find that, in certain limits, it admi…
We investigate the quantized scalar field on the Kaluza-Klein spacetimes of $M^D\times T^d \times S_{FZ}$, where $M^D$ is the ordinary $D$ dimensional flat Minkowski spacetimes, $T^d $ is the $d$ dimensional commutative torus, and $S_{FZ}$ is a noncommutative fuzzy two sphere with a fixed quantized radius. After evaluating the one-loop correction to the spectrum we use the mass-corrected term to compute the Casimir energy of the scalar field on the model spacetime. It is seen that, for some values of $D$ and $d$, the Casimir energy due to vacuum fluctuation in the model spacetimes could give r…
We combine and exploit ideas from Coset Space Dimensional Reduction (CSDR) methods and Non-commutative Geometry. We consider the dimensional reduction of gauge theories defined in high dimensions where the compact directions are a fuzzy space (matrix manifold). In the CSDR one assumes that the form of space-time is M^D=M^4 x S/R with S/R a homogeneous space. Then a gauge theory with gauge group G defined on M^D can be dimensionally reduced to M^4 in an elegant way using the symmetries of S/R, in particular the resulting four dimensional gauge is a subgroup of G. In the present work we show tha…
Regularization of quantum field theories (QFT's) can be achieved by quantizing the underlying manifold (spacetime or spatial slice) thereby replacing it by a non-commutative matrix model or a ``fuzzy manifold'' . Such discretization by quantization is remarkably successful in preserving symmetries and topological features, and altogether overcoming the fermion-doubling problem . In this thesis, the fuzzification of coadjoint orbits and their QFT's are put forward.
Fuzzy spaces are obtained by quantizing adjoint orbits of compact semi-simple Lie groups. Fuzzy spheres emerge from quantizing S^2 and are associated with the group SU(2) in this manner. They are useful for regularizing quantum field theories and modeling spacetimes by non-commutative manifolds. We show that fuzzy spaces are Hopf algebras and in fact have more structure than the latter. They are thus candidates for quantum symmetries. Using their generalized Hopf algebraic structures, we can also model processes where one fuzzy space splits into several fuzzy spaces. For example we can discuss…
A detailed Monte Carlo calculation of the phase diagram of bosonic IKKT Yang-Mills matrix models in three and six dimensions with quartic mass deformations is given. Background emergent fuzzy geometries in two and four dimensions are observed with a fluctuation given by a noncommutative $U(1)$ gauge theory very weakly coupled to normal scalar fields. The geometry, which is determined dynamically, is given by the fuzzy spheres ${\bf S}^2_N$ and ${\bf S}^2_N\times{\bf S}^2_N$ respectively. The three and six matrix models are in the same universality class with some differences. For example, in t…
In this paper we calculate the zero point energy density experienced by observers on M^4 due to a massless scalar field defined throughout M^4 x T^2_F, where T^2_F are fuzzy extra dimensions. Using the Green's function approach we calculate the energy density for the commutative torus and the fuzzy torus. We calculate then the energy density for the fuzzy torus using the Hamiltonian approach. Agreement is shown between Green's function and Hamiltonian approaches.
We examine gauge theories defined in higher dimensions where theextra dimensions form a fuzzy (finite matrix) manifold. First we reinterpret these gauge theories as four-dimensional theories with Kaluza-Klein modes and then we perform a generalized à la Forgacs-Manton dimensional reduction. We emphasize some striking features emerging in the later case such as (i) the appearance of non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensions starting from an abelian gauge theory in higher dimensions, (ii) the fact that the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the theory takes place entirely in the extra dimensio…
We find new spontaneously generated fuzzy extra dimensions emerging from a certain deformation of $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory with cubic soft supersymmetry breaking and mass deformation terms. First, we determine a particular four dimensional fuzzy vacuum that may be expressed in terms of a direct sum of product of two fuzzy spheres, and denote it in short as $S_F^{2\, Int}\times S_F^{2\, Int}$. The direct sum structure of the vacuum is revealed by a suitable splitting of the scalar fields in the model in a manner that generalizes our approach in \cite{Seckinson}. Fluctuations…
We study in detail generalized 4-dimensional fuzzy spheres with twisted extra dimensions. These spheres can be viewed as $SO(5)$-equivariant projections of quantized coadjoint orbits of $SO(6)$. We show that they arise as solutions in Yang-Mills matrix models, which naturally leads to higher-spin gauge theories on $S^4$. Several types of embeddings in matrix models are found, including one with self-intersecting fuzzy extra dimensions $S^4 \times \mathcal{K}$, which is expected to entail 2+1 generations.
In continuum physics, there are important topological aspects like instantons, theta-terms and the axial anomaly. Conventional lattice discretizations often have difficulties in treating one or the other of these aspects. In this paper, we develop discrete quantum field theories on fuzzy manifolds using noncommutative geometry. Basing ourselves on previous treatments of instantons and chiral fermions (without fermion doubling) on fuzzy spaces and especially fuzzy spheres, we present discrete representations of theta-terms and topological susceptibility for gauge theories and derive axial anoma…
Matrix descriptions of higher dimensional spherical branes are investigated. It is known that a fuzzy 2k-sphere is described by the coset space SO(2k+1)/U(k) and has some extra dimensions. It is shown that a fuzzy 2k-sphere is comprised of n^{\frac{k(k-1)}{2}} spherical D(2k-1)-branes and has a fuzzy 2(k-1)-sphere at each point. We can understand the relationship between these two viewpoints by the dielectric effect. Contraction of the algebra is also discussed.
Monopoles and solitons have important topological aspects like quantized fluxes, winding numbers and curved target spaces. Naive discretizations which substitute a lattice of points for the underlying manifolds are incapable of retaining these features in a precise way. We study these problems of discrete physics and matrix models and discuss mathematically coherent discretizations of monopoles and solitons using fuzzy physics and noncommutative geometry. A fuzzy sigma-model action for the two-sphere fulfilling a fuzzy Belavin-Polyakov bound is also put forth.
We consider gauge theories defined in higher dimensions where the extra dimensions form a fuzzy space (a finite matrix manifold). We reinterpret these gauge theories as four-dimensional theories with Kaluza-Klein modes. We then perform a generalized `a la Forgacs-Manton dimensional reduction. We emphasize some striking features emerging such as (i) the appearance of non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensions starting from an abelian gauge theory in higher dimensions, (ii) the fact that the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the theory takes place entirely in the extra dimensions and (iii) the…
In this talk, we review the basics concepts of fuzzy physics and quantum field theory on the Groenwald-Moyal Plane as examples of noncommutative spaces in physics. We introduce the basic ideas, and discuss some important results in these fields. In the end we outline some recent developments in the field.
We find new vacuum solutions of ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills with totally anti-symmetric cubic soft SUSY breaking terms, or equivalently solutions of the IKKT matrix model of type $\mathbb{R}^4_θ\times {\cal K}_N$ with flux terms. The solutions can be understood in terms of 4- and 6- dimensional fuzzy branes ${\cal K}_N$ in extra dimensions, describing self-intersecting projections of compact flag manifolds of $SU(3)$. The 6-dimensional solutions provide a 6-fold covering of the internal space near the origin, while the 4-dimensional branes have a triple self-intersections spanning all 6 inte…
In spacetime dimensions larger than 2, whenever a global symmetry G is spontaneously broken to a subgroup H, and G and H are Lie groups, there are Nambu-Goldstone modes described by fields with values in G/H. In two-dimensional spacetimes as well, models where fields take values in G/H are of considerable interest even though in that case there is no spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries. We consider such models when the world sheet is a two-sphere and describe their fuzzy analogues for G=SU(N+1), H=S(U(N-1)xU(1)) ~ U(N) and G/H=CP^N. More generally our methods give fuzzy versions of c…
In M(atrix) theory, there exist membranes and longitudinal 5-branes (L5-branes) as extended objects. Transverse components of these brane solutions are known to be described by fuzzy CP^k (k=1,2), where k=1 and k=2 correspond to spherical membranes and L5-branes of CP^2 \times S^1 world-volume geometry, respectively. In addition to these solutions, we here show the existence of L7-branes of CP^3 \times S^1 geometry, introducing extra potentials to the M(atrix) theory Lagrangian. As in the cases of k=1,2, the L7-branes (corresponding to k=3) also break the supersymmetries of M(atrix) theory. Th…
Fuzzy hyperboloids naturally emerge in the geometries of D-branes, twistor theory, and higher spin theories. In this work, we perform a systematic study of higher dimensional fuzzy hyperboloids (ultra-hyperboloids) based on non-compact Hopf maps. Two types of non-compact Hopf maps; split-type and hybrid-type, are introduced from the cousins of division algebras. We construct arbitrary even-dimensional fuzzy ultra-hyperboloids by applying the Schwinger operator formalism and indefinite Clifford algebras. It is shown that fuzzy hyperboloids, $H_F^{2p,2q}$, are represented by the coset, $H_F^{2p,…
We study the time-dependent dynamics of a collection of N collapsing/expanding D0-branes in type IIA String Theory. We show that the fuzzy-S^3 and S^5 provide time-dependent solutions to the Matrix Model of D0-branes and its DBI generalisation. Some intriguing cancellations in the calculation of the non-abelian DBI Matrix actions result in the fuzzy-S^3 and S^5 having the same dynamics at large-N. For the Matrix model, we find analytic solutions describing the time-dependent radius, in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions. Investigation of the physical properties of these configurations shows th…
We derive the path integral action for a particle moving in three dimensional fuzzy space. From this we extract the classical equations of motion. These equations have rather surprising and unconventional features: They predict a cut-off in energy, a generally spatial dependent limiting speed, orbital precession remarkably similar to the general relativistic result, flat velocity curves below a length scale determined by the limiting velocity and included mass, displaced planar motion and the existence of two dynamical branches of which only one reduces to Newtonian dynamics in the commutative…
This paper is a review of monopoles, lowest Landau level, fuzzy spheres, and their mutual relations. The Hopf maps of division algebras provide a prototype relation between monopoles and fuzzy spheres. Generalization of complex numbers to Clifford algebra is exactly analogous to generalization of fuzzy two-spheres to higher dimensional fuzzy spheres. Higher dimensional fuzzy spheres have an interesting hierarchical structure made of "compounds" of lower dimensional spheres. We give a physical interpretation for such particular structure of fuzzy spheres by utilizing Landau models in generic ev…
We argue that the worldvolume theories of D-branes probing orbifolds with discrete torsion develop, in the large quiver limit, new non-commutative directions. This provides an explicit `deconstruction' of a wide class of noncommutative theories. This also provides insight into the physical meaning of discrete torsion and its relation to the T-dual B field. We demonstrate that the strict large quiver limit reproduces the matrix theory construction of higher-dimensional D-branes, and argue that finite `fuzzy moose' theories provide novel regularizations of non-commutative theories and explicit s…
We start with an $SU(\cal {N})$ Yang-Mills theory on a manifold ${\cal M}$, suitably coupled to two distinct set of scalar fields in the adjoint representation of $SU({\cal N})$, which are forming a doublet and a triplet, respectively under a global $SU(2)$ symmetry. We show that a direct sum of fuzzy spheres $S_F^{2 \, Int} := S_F^2(\ell) \oplus S_F^2 (\ell) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell + \frac{1}{2} \right ) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell - \frac{1}{2} \right )$ emerges as the vacuum solution after the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry and lay the way for us to interpret the spontaneously b…
We investigated regular black holes with fuzzy sources in three and four dimensions. The density distributions of such fuzzy sources are inspired by noncommutative geometry and given by Gaussian or generalized Gaussian functions. We utilized mass functions to give a physical interpretation of the horizon formation condition for the black holes. In particular, we investigated three-dimensional BTZ-like black holes and four-dimensional Schwarzschild-like black holes in detail, and found that the number of horizons is related to the spacetime dimensions, and the existence of a void in the vicinit…
