A search is made for massive long-lived highly ionising particles with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, using 3.1 pb-1 of pp collision data taken at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The signature of energy loss in the ATLAS inner detector and electromagnetic calorimeter is used. No such particles are found and limits on the production cross section for electric charges 6e <= |q| <= 17e and masses 200 GeV <= m <= 1000 GeV are set in the range 1-12 pb for different hypotheses on the production mechanism.
The latest results of long-lived particle (LLP) searches from the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. Analyses are presented with a focus on detector subsystem needed to discern the LLP signature from Standard Model background, and the custom reconstruction requirements for sensitivity. Results are contextualized with updated summary plots for key new physics candidates, along with notes for future LLP searches.
Selected results of searches for neutral long-lived particles with displaced and delayed jets, trackless jets and emerging jets, as well as displaced muons, obtained with data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations during LHC's Run 2 are presented, as well as challenges and techniques.
The ATLAS and CMS detectors can be used to search for heavy long-lived particles which might signal physics beyond the Standard Model. Such new states can be distinguished from Standard Model particles by exploiting their unique signatures, ranging from multi-leptons and/or jets pro- duction anywhere within the detector volume, to minimum ionizing particles with low velocity and high momentum. Here are reviewed the strategies proposed by ATLAS and CMS to search for these signals, with particular emphasis on possible challenges to the trigger and detector operations.
These conference proceedings for PLHC 2011 in Perugia, Italy summarize the results from two searches for long-lived charged particles using 34-37 pb-1. The searches are based on direct detection and exploits ionization energy loss and time-of-flight measurements to separate slow-moving signal particles from the Standard Model backgrounds. The observations are in all cases consistent with the background-only hypotheses and limits are presented for long-lived squarks, gluinos and sleptons.
A search for the decay of a light Higgs (120 - 140 GeV) to a pair of weakly-interacting, long-lived particles in 1.94 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV recorded in 2011 by the ATLAS detector is presented. The search strategy requires that both long-lived particles decay inside the muon spectrometer. No excess of events is observed above the expected background and limits on the Higgs boson production times branching ratio to weakly-interacting, long-lived particles are derived as a function of the particle proper decay length.
This paper describes a search for pairs of neutral, long-lived particles decaying in the ATLAS calorimeter. Long-lived particles occur in many extensions to the Standard Model and may elude searches for new promptly decaying particles. The analysis considers neutral, long-lived scalars with masses between 5 GeV and 400 GeV, produced from decays of heavy bosons with masses between 125 GeV and 1000 GeV, where the long-lived scalars decay into Standard Model fermions. The analysis uses either 10.8 fb$^{-1}$ or 33.0 fb$^{-1}$ of data (depending on the trigger) recorded in 2016 at the LHC with the …
A set of three dedicated triggers designed to detect long-lived neutral particles decaying throughout the ATLAS detector to a pair of hadronic jets is described. The efficiencies of the triggers for selecting displaced decays as a function of the decay position are presented for simulated events. The effect of pile-up interactions on the trigger efficiencies and the dependence of the trigger rate on instantaneous luminosity during the 2012 data-taking period at the LHC are discussed.

This search is sensitive to long-lived particles that decay to Standard Model particles producing jets at the outer edge of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter or inside the hadronic calorimeter. A search for heavy long-lived multi-charged particles is performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Data collected in 2012 at $\sqrt{s}$=8 TeV from $pp$ collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $20.3$ fb$^{-1}$ are examined. Particles producing anomalously high ionisation, consistent with long-lived massive particles with electric charges from $|q|=2e$ to $|q|=6e$ are searched for. No signal candidate events are observed, and 95\% confidence level cross-section upper limits are interpreted as lower mass limits for a Drell--Yan production model. The mass limits range between …
Long-lived particles are contained in a variety of beyond Standard Model theories, including supersymmetric models, universal extra dimensions, or technicolor theories. If the lifetime of such a particle is long enough, the particle can enter - or even pass through - the detector before it decays. Therefore, searches for long-lived particles require a very different search strategy compared to conventional searches for particles beyond the Standard Model. If the new particle is not only weakly interacting, the particle can be reconstructed itself and not only via its decay products. A very spe…

No events are observed, and 95% confidence level cross-section upper limits are interpreted as lower mass limits for a Drell-Yan production model. Multi-charged particles with masses between 5…
A search is presented for pair-production of long-lived neutral particles using 33 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision data, collected during 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This search focuses on a topology in which one long-lived particle decays in the ATLAS inner detector and the other decays in the muon spectrometer. Special techniques are employed to reconstruct the displaced tracks and vertices in the inner detector and in the muon spectrometer. One event is observed that passes the full event selection, which is consistent with the estimated background. Limit…
A search for long-lived particles, which have come to rest within the ATLAS detector, is presented. The subsequent decays of these long-lived particles can produce high-momentum jets, resulting in large out-of-time energy deposits in the ATLAS calorimeters. These decays are detected using data collected during periods in the LHC bunch structure when collisions are absent. The analysed dataset is composed of events from proton-proton collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2017 and 2018. The dat…
New metastable massive particles with electric and colour charge are features of many theories beyond the Standard Model. We search for evidence of particles that have come to rest in the ATLAS detector and decay at some later time during the periods in the LHC bunch structure without proton-proton collisions. No significant deviations from the expected backgrounds are observed, and a cross-section limit is set. It can be inte…

A search for the decay of neutral, weakly interacting, long-lived particles using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The analysis in this paper uses 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded in 2015-2016. The search employs techniques for reconstructing vertices of long-lived particles decaying into jets in the muon spectrometer exploiting a two vertex strategy and a novel technique that requires only one vertex in association with additional activity in the detector that improves the sensitivity for longer lifetimes. The observed…
Several models of physics beyond the Standard Model predict neutral particles that decay into final states consisting of collimated jets of light leptons and hadrons (so-called "lepton jets"). These particles can also be long-lived with decay length comparable to, or even larger than, the LHC detectors' linear dimensions. This paper presents the results of a search for lepton jets in proton--proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV in a sample of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ collected during 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The discovery of a new type of a heavy long-lived particle (LLP) would be of fundamental significance due to their existence in many beyond the Standard Model scenarios. LLPs are anticipated in a wide range of physics models which extend the Standard Model, such as Supersymmetry and Universal Extra Dimensions. Since LLPs produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the CERN LHC can be slow (beta << 1) and penetrating, time-of-flight and anomalous dE/dx energy loss measurements are promising ways to search for LLPs. In some cases these heavy objects may lose all of their energy and come to rest within th…

Several scenarios beyond the Standard Model predict heavy long-lived particles as a result of a kinematic constraint, a conserved quantum number or a weak coupling. Such particles are possibly identified based on the detection through abnormal energy losses, appearing or disappearing tracks, displaced vertices, lepton-jet signatures, long time-of-flight or late calorimetric energy deposits. This contribution summarizes recent results of searches for heavy long-lived particles with the ATLAS detector using pp collision data at a center of mass energy of 8 TeV.

The search employs techniques for reconstructing vertices of LLPs decaying to jets in the muon spectrometer displaced between 3 m and 14 m with respect to the primary interaction vertex. The observed numbers of events are consistent with the expected background and limits for several benchmark signals are determined. For the Higgs boso…

The search employs dedicated reconstruction techniques that significantly increase the sensitivity to long-lived particle decays that occur in the ATLAS inner detector. Background estimates for Standard Model processes an…
A search for heavy charged long-lived particles is performed using a data sample of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is based on observables related to ionization energy loss and time of flight, which are sensitive to the velocity of heavy charged particles traveling significantly slower than the speed of light. If long lived charged particles exist, and produced at the LHC, they may travel with velocity significantly slower than the speed of light. This unique signature was not considered during the design of the LHC experiments, ATLAS and CMS. As a result, hardware and trigger capabilities need to be evaluated. Model independent approaches for finding long lived particles with the LHC experiments are introduced. They are tested using two bench marks, one in GMSB and one in Split SUSY. The focus is on hardware and trigger issues, as well as reconstruction methods developed by ATLAS and CMS. Both expe…

For the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider the current ATLAS Inner Detector will be replaced by an all-silicon Inner Tracker. The pixel detector will consist of five barrel layers and a number of rings, resulting in about 13 m^2 of instrumented area. Due to the huge non-ionising fluence (1e16 neq/cm^2) and ionising dose (5 MGy), the two innermost layers, instrumented with 3D pixel sensors and 100 um thin planar sensors, will be replaced after about five years of operation. Each pixel layer comprises hybrid detector modules that will be read out by novel ASICs, implemented in …

Search for events with one displaced vertex from long-lived neutral particles decaying into hadronic jets in the ATLAS muon spectrometer in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV
Several models of particle physics different from the Standard Model predict the existence of a dark sector that is weakly coupled to the visible one: the two sectors may couple via the vector portal, where a dark photon with mass in the MeV to GeV range mixes kinetically with the SM photon. If the dark photon is the lightest state in the dark sector, it will decay to SM particles, mainly to leptons and possibly light mesons. Due to its weak interactions with the SM, it can have a non-negligible lifetime. At the LHC, these dark photons would typically be produced with large boost resulting in …

In a 1.9 fb-1 event sample collected during 2011, the observed data are consistent with the Standard Model background expectations. Limits on the product of the production cross section and the branching ratio of a Higgs boson decaying to hidden-sector neutral long-lived particles are derived as a function of the particles' mean lifetime.

Candidate decay events are triggered in selected empty bunch crossings of the LHC in order to remove pp collision backgrounds.
