Search for long-lived charginos based on a disappearing-track signature using 136 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for long-lived charginos produced either directly or in the cascade decay of heavy prompt gluino states is presented. The search is based on proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb$^{-1}$. Long-lived charginos are characterised by a distinct signature of a short and then disappearing track, and are reconstructed using at least four measurements in the ATLAS pixel detector, with no subsequent measurements in the silicon-microstrip tracking volume nor any associated energy deposits in the calorimeter. The final state is complemented by a large missing transverse-momentum requirement for triggering purposes and at least one high-transverse-momentum jet. No excess above the expected backgrounds is observed. Exclusion limits are set at 95% confidence level on the masses of the chargino and gluino for different chargino lifetimes. Chargino masses up to 660 (210) GeV are excluded in scenarios where the chargino is a pure wino (higgsino). For charginos produced during the cascade decay of a heavy gluino, gluinos with masses below 2.1 TeV are excluded for a chargino mass of 300 GeV and a lifetime of 0.2 ns.
A search is presented for direct chargino production based on a disappearing-track signature using 20.3 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. In anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) models, the lightest chargino is nearly mass-degenerate with the lightest neutralino and its lifetime is long enough to be detected in the tracking detectors by identifying decays that result in tracks with no associated hits in the outer region of the tracking system. Some models with supersymmetry also predict charginos with a significant lif…
This paper presents a search for direct electroweak gaugino or gluino pair production with a chargino nearly mass-degenerate with a stable neutralino. It is based on an integrated luminosity of 36.1 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The final state of interest is a disappearing track accompanied by at least one jet with high transverse momentum from initial-state radiation or by four jets from the gluino decay chain. The use of short track segments reconstructed from the innermost tracking layers significantly improves th…
A search for direct chargino production in anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenarios is performed in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV using 4.7 fb^-1 of data collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. In these models, the lightest chargino is predicted to have a lifetime long enough to be detected in the tracking detectors of collider experiments. This analysis explores such models by searching for chargino decays that result in tracks with few associated hits in the outer region of the tracking system. The transverse-momentum spectrum of candidate tracks is found to be consistent…
A search is presented for long-lived charged particles that decay within the CMS detector and produce the signature of a disappearing track. A disappearing track is an isolated track with missing hits in the outer layers of the silicon tracker, little or no energy in associated calorimeter deposits, and no associated hits in the muon detectors. This search uses data collected with the CMS detector in 2015 and 2016 from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38.4 fb$^{-1}$. The results of the search are interpreted …
A search is presented for long-lived charged particles that decay within the CMS detector and produce the signature of a disappearing track. Disappearing tracks are identified as those with little or no associated calorimeter energy deposits and with missing hits in the outer layers of the tracker. The search uses proton-proton collision data recorded at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 inverse femtobarns. The results of the search are interpreted in the context of the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model. The number of observed events is in …

In models of anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB), the lightest chargino is predicted to have a lifetime long enough to be detected in collider experiments. This letter explores AMSB scenarios in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV by attempting to identify decaying charginos which result in tracks that appear to have few associated hits in the outer region of the tracking system. The search was based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.02 fb^-1 collected with the ATLAS detector in 2011. The pT spectrum of candidate tracks is found to be consistent with the expectatio…
In this note, we advocate a new method for identifying gluino pair production events at the LHC. The method is motivated by and works for theories with heavy squarks and Wino-like LSPs (with nearly degenerate LSP and chargino). Such theories are well motivated and their gluinos typically have a O(50%) branching ratio to charged Winos. Observing the track of a long lived charged Wino produced from gluino decay could give a clear identification of a gluino event. Charged Wino NLSPs produced in colliders can be long-lived enough to leave a reconstructable high pT charged track before decaying int…
A search is presented for long-lived charged particles that decay within the volume of the silicon tracker of the CMS experiment. Such particles can produce events with an isolated track that is missing hits in the outermost layers of the silicon tracker, and is also associated with little energy deposited in the calorimeters and no hits in the muon detectors. The search for events with this "disappearing track" signature is performed in a sample of proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosi…
Within the theory of supersymmetry, the lightest neutralino is a dark matter candidate and is often assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) as well. If the neutral wino or higgsino is dark matter, the upper limit of the LSP mass is determined by the observed relic density of dark matter. If the LSP is a nearly-pure neutral state of the wino or higgsino, the lightest chargino state is expected to have a significant lifetime due to a tiny mass difference between the LSP and the chargino. This article presents discovery potential of the 100 TeV future circular hadron collider (FC…
We present a search for long-lived charged particles that decay within the CMS detector and produce the signature of a disappearing track. Disappearing tracks are identified as those with little or no associated calorimeter energy deposits and with missing hits in the outer layers of the tracker. The search uses proton-proton collision data recorded at $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb$^{-1}$. The results of the search are interpreted in the context of the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking model and in terms of the phenomenological MSSM.
Supersymmetric models with a small neutralino-chargino mass difference, and as a result metastable charginos, have been a popular topic of investigation in collider phenomenology, e.g. in anomaly-mediated models of supersymmetry breaking. Recently, the absence of any supersymmetric signal at the 8 TeV LHC data has led to significant interest in the so-called Natural SUSY models with light higgsinos. These models also have a naturally small neutralino-chargino mass difference. However, we show here that when relevant indirect constraints from results at the LHC and elsewhere are applied, this p…
We report on a search for charged massive long-lived particles (CMLLPs), based on 5.2 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider. We search for events in which one or more particles are reconstructed as muons but have speed and ionization energy loss $(dE/dx)$ inconsistent with muons produced in beam collisions. CMLLPs are predicted in several theories of physics beyond the standard model. We exclude pair-produced long-lived gaugino-like charginos below 267 GeV and higgsino-like charginos below 217 GeV at 95% C.L., as well as …
We report on a search for charged massive long-lived particles (CMLLPs), based on 5.2 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider. CMLLPs are predicted in many theories of physics beyond the standard model. We look for events in which one or more particles are reconstructed as muons but have speed and ionization energy loss $dE/dx$ inconsistent with muons produced in beam collisions. We present 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross section for long-lived scalar taus, for long-lived charginos in two SUSY scenarios, and for long-lived sca…
We search for charged massive long-lived particles using 1.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ Collider. Time-of-flight information is used to search for pair produced long-lived tau sleptons, gaugino-like charginos, and higgsino-like charginos. We find no evidence of a signal and set 95% C.L. cross section upper limits for staus, which vary from 0.31pb to 0.04pb for stau masses between 60 GeV and 300 GeV. We also set lower mass limits of 206 GeV (171 GeV) for pair produced charged gauginos (higgsinos).
A search for heavy charged long-lived particles is performed using a data sample of 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is based on observables related to ionization energy loss and time of flight, which are sensitive to the velocity of heavy charged particles traveling significantly slower than the speed of light. Multiple search strategies for a wide range of lifetimes, corresponding to path lengths of a few meters, are defined as model-independently as possible, by referencing several re…
We present a search for charged massive long-lived particles (CMLLPs) that are pair produced in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)= 1.96 TeV collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Our result is a combination of two searches where either one or both CMLLPs are reconstructed in the detector. We select events with muon-like particles that have both speed and ionization energy loss dE/dx different from muons produced in p-pbar collisions. In the absence of evidence for CMLLPs corresponding to 6.3 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, we set limits on the CMLLP masses in several super…
Stringent limits are set on the long-lived lepton-like sector of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM) and the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model. The limits are derived from the results presented in a recent search for long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions, based on data collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. In the pMSSM parameter sub-space considered, 95.9% of the points predicting charginos with a lifetime of at least 10 ns are excluded. These constraints on the pMSSM …
Two related searches for phenomena beyond the standard model (BSM) are performed using events with hadronic jets and significant transverse momentum imbalance. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016-2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. The first search is inclusive, based on signal regions defined by the hadronic energy in the event, the jet multiplicity, the number of jets identified as originating from bottom quarks, and the value of the kinematic va…
Several scenarios beyond the Standard Model predict heavy long-lived particles as a result of a kinematic constraint, a conserved quantum number or a weak coupling. Such particles are possibly identified based on the detection through abnormal energy losses, appearing or disappearing tracks, displaced vertices, lepton-jet signatures, long time-of-flight or late calorimetric energy deposits. This contribution summarizes recent results of searches for heavy long-lived particles with the ATLAS detector using pp collision data at a center of mass energy of 8 TeV.
Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of charged heavy long-lived particles, such as $R$-hadrons or charginos. These particles, if produced at the Large Hadron Collider, should be moving non-relativistically and are therefore identifiable through the measurement of an anomalously large specific energy loss in the ATLAS pixel detector. Measuring heavy long-lived particles through their track parameters in the vicinity of the interaction vertex provides sensitivity to metastable particles with lifetimes from 0.6 ns to 30 ns. A search for such particles with the ATLAS detect…
We propose a model-independent approach for the search of charged long-lived particles produced in ultraperipheral collisions at the LHC. The main idea is to improve event reconstruction at ATLAS and CMS with the help of their forward detectors. Detection of both scattered protons in forward detectors allows complete recovery of event kinematics. Though this requirement reduces the number of events, it greatly suppresses the background, including the large background from the pile-up.

In recent years the search for dark matter has intensified with competitive bounds coming from collider searches, direct detection, and indirect detection. Collider searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) lack the necessary center-of-mass energy to probe TeV-scale dark matter. It is TeV-scale dark matter, however, that remains viable for many models of supersymmetry. In this paper, we study the reach of a 100 TeV proton-proton collider for neutralino dark matter and compare to 14 TeV LHC projections. We employ a supersymmetric simplified model approach and present reach estimates from mono…
Higgsino in supersymmetric standard models is known to be a promising candidate for dark matter in the Universe. Its phenomenological property is strongly affected by the gaugino fraction in the Higgsino-like state. If this is sizable, in other words, if gaugino masses are less than ${\cal O}(10)$ TeV, we may probe the Higgsino dark matter in future non-accelerator experiments such as dark matter direct searches and measurements of electric dipole moments. On the other hand, if gauginos are much heavier, then it is hard to search for Higgsino in these experiments. In this case, due to a lack o…
Searches for heavy long-lived charged particles are performed using a data sample of 19.8 fb$^{-1}$ from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess is observed above the estimated background and limits are placed on the mass of long-lived particles in various supersymmetric models. Long-lived tau sleptons in models with gauge-mediated symmetry breaking are excluded up to masses between 440 and 385 GeV for $\tanβ$ between 10 and 50, with a 290 GeV limit in the case where only direct tau slepto…
Search for heavy, long-lived, charged particles with large ionisation energy loss in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\text{TeV}$ using the ATLAS experiment and the full Run 2 dataset
We present an extension of the simplified fast detector simulator of MadAnalysis 5 - the SFS framework - with methods making it suitable for the treatment of long-lived particles of any kind. This allows users to make use of intuitive Python commands and straightforward C++ methods to introduce detector effects relevant for long-lived particles, and to implement selection cuts and plots related to their properties. In particular, the impact of the magnetic field inside a typical high-energy physics detector on the trajectories of any charged object can now be easily simulated. As an illustrati…
Search for long-lived charged particles using large specific ionisation loss and time of flight in 140 $fb^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}\ = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector
We present version 2 of SModelS, a program package for the fast reinterpretation of LHC searches for new physics on the basis of simplified model results. The major novelty of the SModelS v2 series is an extended topology description with a flexible number of particle attributes, such as spin, charge, decay width, etc. This enables, in particular, the treatment of a wide range of signatures with long-lived particles. Moreover, constraints from prompt and long-lived searches can be evaluated simultaneously in the same run. The current database includes results from searches for heavy stable cha…
In this essay we discuss the possibilities and associated challenges concerning beyond the Standard Model searches at FCC-ee, such as rare decays of heavy-flavoured particles and long-lived particles. The Standard Model contains several suppression mechanisms, which cause a given group of processes to happen rarely, resulting in rare decays. The interest in these decays lies in the fact that the physics beyond the Standard Model does not need to be affected by the same suppression mechanism and therefore can naturally manifest in these decays. Their interest is reinforced by the recent report …
