Pulsation frequencies of acoustic modes are calculated for realistic rotating stellar models using both a perturbative and a two-dimensional approach. A comparison between the two yields validity domains which are similar to those previously obtained in Reese, Lignieres and Rieutord (2006) for polytropic models. One can also construct validity domains based on polynomial fits to the frequencies from the two-dimensional approach, and these also turn out to be similar, thus further confirming the agreement between the perturbative and two-dimensional approach at low rotation rates. Furthermore, as was previously shown in Espinosa, Perez Hernandez and Roca Cortes (2004), adjacent frequencies in multiplets come close together, thus forming pairs. This phenomena, exclusive to two-dimensional calculations, is shown to be an unlikely explanation of the close frequency pairs observed in delta Scuti stars. A systematic search for all close frequency pairs in the calculated spectrum is also carried out. The number of close frequency pairs is shown to agree with what is expected based on a Poisson distribution, but does not match the number or distribution of close pairs in stars like FG Vir. Furthermore, a lack of close frequency pairs appears at low rotation rates, where frequency multiplets do not overlap. Delta Scuti stars currently reported as having close frequency pairs do not fall in this interval.
Variability and mass-loss are common phenomena in massive OB-type stars. It is argued that they are caused by violent strange mode instabilities identified in corresponding stellar models. We present a systematic linear stability analysis with respect to radial perturbations of massive OB-type stars with solar chemical composition and masses between 23 to 100 M$_{\odot}$. For selected unstable stellar models, we perform non-linear simulations of the evolution of the instabilities into the non-linear regime. Finite amplitude pulsations with periods in the range between hours and 100 days are fo…
Context: Observations of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with increasing spatial resolution reveal new layers of complexity of atmospheric processes on a variety of scales. Aim: To analyze the physical mechanisms that cause asymmetries and surface structures in observed images, we use detailed 3D dynamical simulations of AGB stars; these simulations self-consistently describe convection and pulsations. Methods: We used the CO5BOLD radiation-hydrodynamics code to produce an exploratory grid of global "star-in-a-box" models of the outer convective envelope and the inner atmosphere of AGB sta…
We have developed an interactive PYTHON code and derived crucial ephemeris data of 99.4% of all stars classified as 'Mira' in the ASAS data base, referring to pulsation periods, mean maximum magnitudes and, whenever possible, the amplitudes among others. We present a statistical comparison between our results and those given by the AAVSO International Variable Star Index (VSX), as well as those determined with the machine learning automatic procedure of Richards et al. 2012. Our periods are in good agreement with those of the VSX in more than 95% of the stars. However, when comparing our perio…
We report the results of a 60-hr photometric campaign of a rapidly oscillating Ap star, J0855 (TYC 2488-1241-1). We have utilised the multi-site Las Cumbres Observatory's (LCO) 0.4-m telescopes to obtain short cadence B-band observations of an roAp star previously lacking detailed study. Our observations confirm the rotation period presented in the discovery paper of this star ($P_{\rm rot}=3.0918$ d), and reveal the star to be pulsating in a distorted mode. The B data show this star to be among the highest amplitude roAp stars, with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 24 mmag. Modelling of the pulsat…
Recent numerical and theoretical considerations have shown that low-degree acoustic modes in rapidly rotating stars follow an asymptotic formula and recent observations of pulsations in rapidly rotating delta Scuti stars seem to match these expectations. However, a key question is whether strong gradients or discontinuities can adversely affect this pattern to the point of hindering its identification. Other important questions are how rotational splittings are affected by the 2D rotation profiles expected from baroclinic effects and whether it is possible to probe the rotation profile using t…
A new class of pulsating binary stars was recently discovered, whose pulsation amplitudes are strongly modulated with orbital phase. Stars in close binaries are tidally distorted, so we examine how a star's tidally induced asphericity affects its oscillation mode frequencies and eigenfunctions. We explain the pulsation amplitude modulation via tidal mode coupling such that the pulsations are effectively confined to certain regions of the star, e.g., the tidal pole or the tidal equator. In addition to a rigorous mathematical formalism to compute this coupling, we provide a more intuitive semi-a…
We present a multi-instrument analysis of the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD 42659. We have obtained $B$ photometric data for this star and use these data, in conjunction with TESS observations, to analyse the high-frequency pulsation in detail. We find a triplet which is split by the rotation frequency of the star ($ν_{\rm rot}=0.3756$ d$^{-1}$; $P_{\rm rot}=2.66$ d) and present both distorted dipole and distorted quadrupole mode models. We show that the pulsation frequency, $150.9898$ d$^{-1}$ ($P_{\rm puls}=9.54$ min) is greater than the acoustic cutoff frequency. We utilise 27 high-…
We present a new grid of non-adiabatic, linear pulsation models of Long-Period Variables (LPVs), including periods and growth rates for radial modes from the fundamental to the fourth overtone. The models span a wide range in mass, luminosity, metallicity, C/O ratio and helium abundance, effectively covering the whole thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) evolution, and representing a significant update with respect to previous works. The main improvement is the inclusion of detailed atomic and molecular opacities, consistent with the models chemical mixture, that makes the presen…
Context: Rapid rotation is a common feature of early-type stars but which remains a challenge for the models. The understanding of its effect on stellar evolution is however imperative to interpret the observed properties of numerous stars. Aims: We wish to bring more observational constraints on the properties of fast rotating stars, especially on their oscillation modes. Methods: We focus on the nearby star Altair which is known as a very rapidly rotating star with an equatorial velocity estimated recently at 313 km/s. We observed this star with the high-resolution spectropolarimeter Neo-Nar…
Context. The frequencies, lifetimes, and eigenfunctions of solar acoustic waves are affected by turbulent convection, which is random in space and in time. Since the correlation time of solar granulation and the periods of acoustic waves ($\sim$5 min) are similar, the medium in which the waves propagate cannot a priori be assumed to be time independent. Aims. We compare various effective-medium solutions with numerical solutions in order to identify the approximations that can be used in helioseismology. For the sake of simplicity, the medium is one dimensional. Methods. We consider the Keller…
In recent years, astronomers have witnessed major progresses in the field of stellar physics. This was made possible thanks to the combination of a solid theoretical understanding of the phenomena of stellar pulsations and the availability of a tremendous amount of exquisite space-based asteroseismic data. In this context, this chapter reviews the basic theory of stellar pulsations, considering small, adiabatic perturbations to a static, spherically symmetric equilibrium. It starts with a brief discussion of the solar oscillation spectrum, followed by the setting of the theoretical problem, in…
We present multidimensional modeling of convection and oscillations in main-sequence stars somewhat more massive than the Sun, using three separate approaches: 1) Using the 3-D planar StellarBox radiation hydrodynamics code to model the envelope convection zone and part of the radiative zone. Our goals are to examine the interaction of stellar pulsations with turbulent convection in the envelope, excitation of acoustic modes, and the role of convective overshooting; 2) Applying the spherical 3-D MHD ASH (Anelastic Spherical Harmonics) code to simulate the core convection and radiative zone. Ou…
The A/F-type stars and pulsators ($δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Dor) are in a critical regime where they experience the transition from radiative to convective transport of energy in their envelopes. Such stars can pulsate in both gravity and acoustic modes. Hence, the knowledge of their fundamental parameters along with their observed pulsation characteristics can help in improving the stellar models. When residing in a binary system, these pulsators provide more accurate and less model dependent stellar parameters than in the case of their single counterparts. We present a light curve model for the eclipsin…
We present a new asteroseismic analysis of KIC~6048106, a \textit{Kepler} Algol-type eclipsing binary star in a circularized orbit with $P_\rm{orb}$=1.559361$\pm$0.000036~d. Based on a physical model for the binary and its corresponding set of fundamental parameters, ($T_\rm{eff}=7033\pm187~K, ~M_\rm{1}=1.55\pm0.11M_{\odot}$ and $T_\rm{eff}=4522\pm103~K,~M_\rm{2}=0.33\pm0.07M_{\odot}$, respectively for the primary and the secondary component), we obtained the residual light curve after removal of the full binary model, including a 290-day activity cycle for the secondary component (Samadi Gh. …
Stellar oscillations can be of topological origin. We reveal this deep and so-far hidden property of stars by establishing a novel parallel between stars and topological insulators. We construct an hermitian problem to derive the expression of the stellar $\mathrm{\textit{acoustic-buoyant}}$ frequency $S$ of non-radial adiabatic pulsations. A topological analysis then connects the changes of sign of the acoustic-buoyant frequency to the existence of Lamb-like waves within the star. These topological modes cross the frequency gap and behave as gravity modes at low harmonic degree $\ell$ and as …
We present the analysis of K2 short cadence data of the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star, 33 Librae (HD 137949). The precision afforded to the K2 data allow us to identify at least 11 pulsation modes in this star, compared to the three previously reported. Reoccurring separations between these modes leads us to suggest a large frequency separation, $Δν$, of 78.9 $μ$Hz, twice that reported in the literature. Other frequency separations we detect may represent the small frequency separation, $δν$, but this is inconclusive at this stage due to magnetic perturbation of the frequencies. Due to th…
The first bright objects to form in the Universe might not have been "ordinary" fusion-powered stars, but "Dark Stars" (DSs) powered by the annihilation of dark matter (DM) in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). If discovered, DSs can provide a unique laboratory to test DM models. DSs are born with a mass of order $M_\odot$ and may grow to a few million solar masses; in this work we investigate the properties of early DSs with masses up to $\sim \! 1000 \, M_\odot$, fueled by WIMPS weighing $100$ GeV. We improve the previous implementation of the DM energy source into the…
Context: Mode identification has remained a major obstacle in the interpretation of pulsation spectra in rapidly rotating stars. Aims: We would like to test mode identification methods and seismic diagnostics in rapidly rotating stars, using oscillation spectra based on new theoretical predictions. Methods: We investigate the auto-correlation function and Fourier transform of theoretically calculated frequency spectra, in which modes are selected according to their visibilities. Given the difficulties in predicting intrinsic mode amplitudes, we experimented with various ad-hoc prescriptions fo…
Hybrid $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus pulsating stars show acoustic ($p$) oscillation modes typical of $δ$ Scuti variable stars, and gravity ($g$) pulsation modes characteristic of $γ$ Doradus variable stars simultaneously excited. Observations from space missions like MOST, CoRoT, and \emph{Kepler} have revealed a large number of hybrid $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus pulsators, thus paving the way for a exciting new channel for asteroseismic studies. We perform a detailed asteroseismological modeling of five hybrid $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus stars. We employ a grid-based modeling approach to sound the internal stru…
A linear stability analysis of models for evolved primordial stars with masses between 150 and 250 M$_{\odot}$ is presented. Strange mode instabilities with growth rates in the dynamical range are identified for stellar models with effective temperatures below log T$_{\rm{eff}}$ = 4.5. For selected models the final fate of the instabilities is determined by numerical simulation of their evolution into the non-linear regime. As a result, the instabilities lead to finite amplitude pulsations. Associated with them are acoustic energy fluxes capable of driving stellar winds with mass-loss rates in…
Oxygen abundance measurements are important for understanding stellar structure and evolution. Measured in Cepheids, they further provide clues on the metallicity gradient and chemo-dynamical evolution in the Galaxy. However, most of the abundance analyses of Cepheids to date have been based on one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic model atmospheres. Here, we test the validity of this approach for the key oxygen abundance diagnostic, the \ion{O}{I} $777\,\mathrm{nm}$~triplet lines. We carry out 2D non-LTE radiative transfer clculations across two different 2D radiation hydrodynamics simulations of …
Standard spectroscopic analyses of Cepheid variables are based on hydrostatic one-dimensional model atmospheres, with convection treated using various formulations of mixing-length theory. This paper aims to carry out an investigation of the validity of the quasi-static approximation in the context of pulsating stars. We check the adequacy of a two-dimensional time-dependent model of a Cepheid-like variable with focus on its spectroscopic properties. With the radiation-hydrodynamics code CO5BOLD, we construct a two-dimensional time-dependent envelope model of a Cepheid with $T_\mathrm{eff}= 56…
Asteroseismology has proven to be a powerful method for probing stellar interiors. Analytical descriptions of the global oscillation modes, in combination with pulsation codes, have provided valuable help in processing and interpreting the large amount of seismic data collected by the CoRoT, $Kepler$, and TESS missions. These prior results have paved the way to more in-depth analyses of the oscillation spectra of stars, which requires innovative theoretical descriptions of stellar oscillations. In this paper, we aim to analytically express the resonance condition of the spheroidal adiabatic os…
