This article discusses two dual approaches to spin transport in magnetic multilayers: a direct, purely quantum, approach based on a Tight-Biding model (TB) and a semiclassical approach (Continuous Random Matrix Theory, CRMT). The combination of both approaches provides a systematic way to perform multi-scales simulations of systems that contain relevant physics at scales larger (spin accumulation, spin diffusion...) and smaller (specular reflexions, tunneling...) than the elastic mean free paths of the layers. We show explicitly that CRMT and TB give consistent results in their common domain of applicability.
We study hot carrier transport under magnetic fields up to 15 T in suspended graphitic multilayers through differential conductance (dI/dV) spectroscopy. Distinct high-energy dI/dV anomalies have been observed and shown to be related to intrinsic phonon-emission processes in graphite. The evolution of such dI/dV anomalies under magnetic fields is further understood as a consequence of inter-Landau level cyclotron-phonon resonance scattering. The observed magneto-phonon effects not only shed light on the physical mechanisms responsible for high-current transport in graphitic systems, but also o…
The multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method is employed to study vibrationally coupled charge transport in models of single molecule junctions. To increase the efficiency of the simulation method, a representation of the Hamiltonian in terms of the scattering states of the underlying electronic Hamiltonian is used. It is found that with an appropriate choice of the scattering states the artificial electron correlation present in the original representation of the model is greatly reduced. This allows efficient simulation of the steady-state currents in a wide physical param…
We study hot electron transport in short-channel suspended multilayer graphene devices created by a distinct experimental approach. For devices with semi-transparent contact barriers, a dip of differential conductance (dI/dV) has been observed at source drain bias Vd = 0, along with anomalies at higher Vd likely induced by optical phonon scattering. For devices with low contact barriers, only the dI/dV dip at Vd = 0 is observed, and we find a well-fit logarithmic dependence of dI/dV on both the bias Vd and the temperature T. The logarithmic Vd dependence is explained with the hot electron effe…
We calculate the transport properties of multilayer graphene, considering the effect of multisubband scattering in a high density regime, where higher subbands are occupied by charge carriers. To calculate the conductivity of multilayer graphene, we use the coupled multiband Boltzmann transport theory while fully incorporating the multiband scattering effects. We show that the allowed scattering channels, screening effects, chiral nature of the electronic structure, and type of impurity scatterings determine the transport behavior of multilayer graphene. We find that the conductivity of multil…
A multiscale simulation approach is developed to simulate the contact transport properties between semimetal to a monolayer two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductor. The results elucidate the mechanisms for low contact resistance between semimetal and TMDC semiconductor contacts from a quantum transport perspective. The simulation results compare favorably with recent experiments. Furthermore, the results show that the contact resistance of a Bismuth-MoS2 contact can be further reduced by engineering the dielectric environment and doping the TMDC material to <1…
In this paper the first principle noncollinear transport calculation for Cu/Co(111) including interfacial spin-flipping was performed. We modeled spin-flipping at the interface by assuming a noncollinear magnetic structure with random magnetization orientation which satisfied Gaussian distribution along average magnetization direction. The relationship between spin-dependent conductance including interfacial spin-flipping and random magnetization orientation distribution width was obtained. For certain distribution width, our defined spin-flipping ratio coincides with the range of experimental…
We apply the semi-classical quantum Boltzmann formalism for the computation of transport properties to multilayer graphene. We compute the electrical conductivity as well as the thermal conductivity and thermopower for Bernal-stacked multilayers with an even number of layers. We show that the window for hydrodynamic transport in multilayer graphene is similar to the case of bilayer graphene. We introduce a simple hydrodynamic model which we dub the multi-fluid model and which can be used to reproduce the results for the electrical conductivity and thermopower from the quantum Boltzmann equatio…
In this paper we review thermal properties of graphene and multilayer graphene and discuss the optothermal technique developed for the thermal conductivity measurements. We also outline different theoretical approaches used for the description of phonon transport in graphene and provide comparison with available experimental thermal conductivity data.
Understanding the impact of the alloy micro-structure on carrier transport becomes important when designing III-nitride-based LED structures. In this work, we study the impact of alloy fluctuations on the hole carrier transport in (In,Ga)N single and multi-quantum well systems. To disentangle hole transport from electron transport and carrier recombination processes, we focus our attention on uni-polar (p-i-p) systems. The calculations employ our recently established multi-scale simulation framework that connects atomistic tight-binding theory with a macroscale drift-diffusion model. In additi…
Transport properties of magnetic multilayers in current perpendicular to the plane of the layers geometry are defined by diffusive scattering in the bulk of the layers, and diffusive and ballistic scattering across the interfaces. Due to the short screening length in metals, layer by layer treatment of the multilayers is possible, when the macroscopic transport equation (Boltzmann equation or diffusion equation) is solved in each layer, while the details of the interface scattering are taken into account via the boundary conditions. Embedding the ballistic and diffusive interface scattering in…
We report the synthesis of AB-stacked multilayer graphene via ambient pressure chemical vapor deposition on Cu foils, and demonstrate a method to construct suspended multilayer graphene devices. In four-terminal geometry, such devices were characterized by hot carrier transport at temperatures down to 240 mK and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The differential conductance (dI/dV) shows a characteristic dip at longitudinal voltage bias V=0 at low temperatures, indicating the presence of hot electron effect due to a weak electron-phonon coupling. Under magnetic fields, the magnitude of the dI/dV …
We study the emission of femtosecond spin current pulses at Fe/Au interfaces. Using optical second harmonic generation we demonstrate the control of pulse shape and duration by varying the emitter thickness and show that it is determined by the parameters of hot electrons emission and the diffusive transport. Using a simple model of electron emission we develop a description of superdiffusive spin transport in Au allowing to extract electron velocity and scattering rates from the experimental data. The importance of carrier multiplication in Fe is demonstrated.
We calculate the conductivity of arbitrarily stacked multilayer graphene sheets within a relaxation time approximation, considering both short-range and long-range impurities. We theoretically investigate the feasibility of identifying the stacking order of these multilayers using transport measurements. For relatively clean samples, the conductivities of the various stacking configurations depend on the carrier density as a power-law for over two decades. This dependence arises from a low density decomposition of the multilayer band structure into a sum of chiral Hamiltonians. For dirty sampl…
We report a tunable magnetoresistance (MR) behavior in suspended graphitic multilayers through point defect engineering by ion implantation. We find that ion implantation drastically changes the MR behavior: the linear positive MR in pure graphitic multilayers transforms into a negative MR after introducing significant short-range disorders (implanted boron or carbon atoms), consistent with recent non-Markovian transport theory. Our experiments suggest the important role of the non-Markovian process in the intriguing MR behavior for graphitic systems, and open a new window for understanding tr…
We measured spin transport in nonferromagnetic (NM) metallic multilayers from the contribution to damping due to spin pumping from a ferromagnetic Co90Fe10 thin film. The multilayer stack consisted of NM1/NM2/Co90Fe10(2 nm)/NM2/NM3 with varying NM materials and thicknesses. Using conventional theory for one dimensional diffusive spin transport in metals, we show that the effective damping due to spin pumping can be strongly affected by the spin transport properties of each NM in the multilayer, which permits the use of damping measurements to accurately determine the spin transport properties …
The temperature dependence of the spin relaxation time in multilayer graphene (MLG) spin valve devices was measured using a non-local magnetoresistance (NLMR) measurement. A weak localization (WL) was observed from magnetoresistance (MR) measurements below 70 K, suggesting coherent transport of the charge carriers. Within the same temperature range, we observed a large increase in the spin relaxation time and spin diffusion length even though the diffusion constant Ds was suppressed by the WL. This demonstrated that the spin relaxation time in MLG could be significantly extended when the charg…
Carbon nanotube networks are one of the candidate materials to function as malleable, transparent, conducting films, with the technologically promising application of being used as flexible electronic displays. Nanotubes disorderly distributed in a film offers many possible paths for charge carriers to travel across the entire system, but the theoretical description of how this charge transport occurs is rather challenging for involving a combination of intrinsic nanotube properties with network morphology aspects. Here we attempt to describe the transport properties of such films in two diffe…
The transport response of dipole skyrmions in amorphous centrosymmetric Fe/Gd multilayer is investigated by temperature and field-dependent resistivity measurements collected in three current and magnetic field configurations. It is shown that a dipole skyrmion lattice phase may form at certain temperatures leading to a unique signature of the polar longitudinal resistivity. This signature differs from the conventional field-varying parabolic response associated with stripe phases, which transition to a disordered skyrmion phase under applied fields. Transport measurements under different fiel…
We use a tight-binding Hamiltonian and Green functions methods to calculate the quantum transmission through single-wall fullerenes and bilayered and trilayered onions of icosahedral symmetry attached to metallic leads. The electronic structure of the onion-like fullerenes takes into account the curvature and finite size of the fullerenes layers as well as the strength of the intershell interactions depending on to the number of interacting atom pairs belonging to adjacent shells. Misalignment of the symmetry axes of the concentric icosahedral shells produces breaking of the level degeneracies…
In the context of graphene-based composite applications, a complete understanding of charge conduction in multilayer reduced graphene oxides (rGO) is highly desirable. However, these rGO compounds are characterized by multiple and different sources of disorder depending on the chemical method used for their synthesis. Most importantly the precise role of interlayer interaction in promoting or jeopardizing electronic flow remains unclear. Here, thanks to the development of a multiscale computational approach combining first-principles calculations with large scale transport simulations, the tra…
A set of stacked two-dimensional electron systems in a perpendicular magnetic field exhibits a three-dimensional version of the quantum Hall effect if interlayer tunneling is not too strong. When such a sample is in a quantum Hall plateau, the edge states of each layer combine to form a chiral metal at the sample surface. We study the interplay of interactions and disorder in transport properties of the chiral metal, in the regime of weak interlayer tunneling. Our starting point is a system without interlayer tunneling, in which the only excitations are harmonic collective modes: surface magne…
Multilayer graphene (MLG) thin films are deposited on silicon oxide substrates by mechanical exfoliation (or 'scotch-tape method') from Kish graphite. The thickness and number of layers are determined from both Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Raman Spectroscopy. Electrical terminals are deposited on MLGs in a four-probe configuration by electron-beam lithography, gold/titanium thermal evaporation, and lift-off. The electrical resistance is measured from room temperature down to 2 K. The electrical resistance of the MLGs shows an increase with decreasing temperature, and then decreases after …
In this paper, we present a Hamiltonian and thermodynamic theory of heat transport on various levels of description. Transport of heat is formulated within kinetic theory of polarized phonons, kinetic theory of unpolarized phonons, hydrodynamics of polarized phonons, and hydrodynamics of unpolarized phonons. These various levels of description are linked by Poisson reductions, where no linearizations are made. Consequently, we obtain a new phonon hydrodynamics that contains convective terms dependent on vorticity of the heat flux, which are missing in the standard theories of phonon hydrodynam…
Structuring materials is one mechanism to influence the thermal conductivity and thus thermoelectric efficiency. In order to investigate the scattering of phonons in multilayer structures we developed a beam matching technique, which is based on the concept of individual phonons and their scattering at interfaces. One of the major goals is to efficiently determine the complex band structure of the bulk materials. The complex band structure is determined using selected k-points on a triangulated grid in the complex plane of wave vectors perpendicular to the interface. Matching the phonon modes …
We discuss electric transport and orbital magnetism of multilayer graphenes in a weak-magnetic field using the matrix decomposition technique. At zero temperature, the minimum conductivity is given by that of the monolayer system multiplied by the layer number $N$, independent of the interlayer hopping $t$. When the interlayer hopping satisfies the condition $t\gg \hbar/τ$ with $τ$ being collision time of impurity scattering, $[N/2]$ kinks and $[N/2]+1$ plateaux appear in the Fermi-energy (gate voltage) dependence of the conductivity and the Hall conductivity, respectively. These behaviors are…
The presence of twist angles between layers of two-dimensional materials has a profound impact on their physical properties. Turbostratic multilayer graphene is a system containing a distribution of rotational stacking faults, and these interfaces also have variable twist angles. In this work, we examine the influence of turbostratic single-layer graphene content on the in-plane thermal conductivity of a defect free multilayer graphene system with low defect density. Detailed Raman mode analysis is used to quantify the content of turbostratic single-layer graphene in the system while complemen…
We develop a computational framework, based on the Boltzmann transport equation, with the ability to compute the thermal transport in nanostructured materials of any geometry using as the only input the bulk thermal conductivity accumulation function. The main advantage of our method is twofold. First, while the scattering times and dispersion curves are unknown for most materials, the phonon mean free path distribution can be directly obtained by experiments. As a consequence, a wider range of materials can be simulated than with a frequency-dependent approach. Second, when phonon dispersions…
Within the framework of a two-band tight-binding model, we have performed calculations of giant magnetoresistance, exchange coupling and thermoelectric power (TEP) for a system consisting of three magnetic layers separated by two non-magnetic spacers with the first two magnetic layers strongly antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled. We have shown how does the GMR relate with the corresponding regions of magnetic structure phase diagrams and computed some relevant hysteresis loops, too. The GMR may take negative values for specific layers thicknesses, and the TEP reveals quite pronounced oscill…
We theoretically investigate the unusual features of the magnetotransport in a monolayer phosphorene ferromagnetic/normal/ferromagnetic (F/N/F) hybrid structure. We find that the charge conductance can feature a minimum at parallel (P) configuration and a maximum near the antiparallel (AP) configuration of magnetization in the F/N/F structure with $n$-doped F and $p$-doped N regions and also a finite conductance in the AP configuration with the N region of $n$-type doping. In particular, the proposed structure exhibits giant magnetoresistance, which can be tuned to unity. This perfect switchin…
The study explores perpendicular transport through macroscopically inhomogeneous three-dimensional disordered conductors using mesoscopic methods (real-space Green function technique in a two-probe measuring geometry). The nanoscale samples (containing $\sim1000$ atoms) are modeled by a tight-binding Hamiltonian on a simple cubic lattice where disorder is introduced in the on-site potential energy. I compute the transport properties of: disordered metallic junctions formed by concatenating two homogenous samples with different kinds of microscopic disorder, a single strongly disordered interfa…
We present a theoretical framework for the calculation of charge transport through nanowire-based Schottky-barrier field-effect transistors that is conceptually simple but still captures the relevant physical mechanisms of the transport process. Our approach combines two approaches on different length scales: (1) the finite elements method is used to model realistic device geometries and to calculate the electrostatic potential across the Schottky-barrier by solving the Poisson equation, and (2) the Landauer approach combined with the method of non-equilibrium Green's functions is employed to …
We implement a bottom-up multiscale approach for the modeling of defect localization in $C_{6n^2}H_{6n}$ islands, i.e. graphene quantum dots with a hexagonal symmetry, by means of density functional and semiempirical approaches. Using the \textit{ab initio} calculations as a reference, we recognize the theoretical framework under which semiempirical methods describe adequately the electronic structure of the studied systems and thereon proceed to the calculation of quantum transport within the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. The computational data reveal an impurity-like behavior o…
Combining both vertical and in-plane two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures opens up the possibility to create an unprecedented architecture using 2D atomic layer building blocks. The thermal transport properties of such mixed heterostructures, critical to various applications in nanoelectronics, however, have not been thoroughly explored. Herein, we construct two configurations of multilayer in-plane graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (Gr/h-BN) heterostructures (i.e. mixed heterostructures) via weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions and systematically investigate the dependence of their interfaci…
In this paper, a finite-volume discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) based on the non-gray phonon transport model is developed for multiscale heat transfer problem with arbitrary temperature difference. Under large temperature difference, the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) is essentially multiscale, not only in the frequency space, but also in the spatial space. In order to realize the efficient coupling of the multiscale phonon transport, the phonon scattering and advection are coupled together in the present scheme on the reconstruction of the distribution function at the ce…
We study the effect on CPP GMR of changing the order of the layers in a multilayer. Using a tight-binding simple cubic two band model (s-d), magneto-transport properties are calculated in the zero-temperature, zero-bias limit, within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. We demonstrate that for layers of different thicknesses formed from a single magnetic metal and multilayers formed from two magnetic metals, the GMR ratio and its dependence on disorder is sensitive to the order of the layers. This effect disappears in the limit of large disorder, where the results of the widely-used Boltzmann appr…
Engineering the electronic properties of graphene has triggered great interest for potential applications in electronics and opto-electronics. Here we demonstrate the possibility to tune the electronic transport properties of graphene monolayers and multilayers by functionalisation with fluorine. We show that by adjusting the fluorine content different electronic transport regimes can be accessed. For monolayer samples, with increasing the fluorine content, we observe a transition from electronic transport through Mott variable range hopping in two dimensions to Efros - Shklovskii variable ran…

During the fabrication process of large scale silicene through common chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique, polycrystalline films are quite likely to be produced, and the existence of Kapitza thermal resistance along grain boundaries could result in substantial changes of their thermal properties. In the present study, the thermal transport along polycrystalline silicene was evaluated by performing a multiscale method. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations (NEMD) was carried out to assess the interfacial thermal resistance of various constructed grain boundaries in silicene as we…
One-dimensional (1D) topologically protected states are usually formed at the interface between two-dimensional (2D) materials with different topological invariants. Therefore, 1D chiral interface channels (CICs) can be created at the boundary of two quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with different Chern numbers. Such a QAH junction can function as a chiral edge current distributer at zero magnetic field, but its realization remains challenging. Here, by employing an in-situ mechanical mask, we use molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to synthesize QAH insulator junctions, in which two QAH insul…
The scattering theory of transport has to be applied with care in a diffuse environment. Here we discuss how the scattering matrices of heterointerfaces can be used to compute interface resistances of dirty magnetic multilayers. First principles calculations of these interface resistances agree well with experiments in the CPP (current perpendicular to the interface plane) configuration.
We analyze the interplay between disorder and band structure in current perpendicular to the planes (CPP) giant magnetoresistance (GMR). We consider finite magnetic multilayers attached to pure crystalline leads, described by a tight-binding simple cubic two-band model (s-d). Several models of disorder are considered, including random on-site potentials, lattice distortions, impurities, vacancies, and cross-section fluctuations. Magneto-transport properties are calculated in the zero-temperature zero-bias limit, within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. Using a very efficient numerical scatterin…
