The method of the space dependent basis is applied to study electronic spinors in a crystal. The crystal in the momentum space is described by the Brillouine zone which might contains obstructions or degeneracies for which requires different gauges for different regions. The electronic bands are classified according to their topology. The connection and curvature determines the physical properties which are clasified according to the topological invariants. We apply this method to the Topological Insulators, Topological Superconductors, Persistent Currents in coupled rings and photoemission for a curved crystal-face boundary
Existence of a protected surface state described by a massless Dirac equation is a defining property of the topological insulator. Though this statement can be explicitly verified on an idealized flat surface, it remains to be addressed to what extent it could be general. On a curved surface, the surface Dirac equation is modified by the spin connection terms. Here, in the light of the differential geometry, we give a general framework for constructing the surface Dirac equation starting from the Hamiltonian for bulk topological insulators. The obtained unified description clarifies the physic…
The spintronic properties of curved nanostructures derived from two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTI's) are explored theoretically with density functional theory-based (DFT) calculations and tight-binding models. We show that curved geometries make it possible to manipulate electron spins in ways that are not available for planar 2DTI devices. We predict that, unlike planar 2DTI devices, curved 2DTI-related nanostructures can function as highly effective {\em two}-terminal spin filters even in the absence of magnetic fields. We construct a generalization to curved geometries of our pre…
The electronic bands are classified according to their topology. We compute the connection and curvature for the electronic bands and show that the physical properties are determined by topological invariants which are equivalent to the existence of the zero modes. We apply this method to the Topological Insulators and Topogical Superconductors.
We investigate the impact of electrostatics on the proximity effect between a magnetic insulator and a semiconductor wire in semiconductor-superconductor-magnetic insulator hybrid structures. By performing self-consistent Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger-Poisson calculations using an effective model of the hybrid system, we find that large effective Zeeman fields consistent with the emergence of topological superconductivity emerge within a large parameter window in wires with overlapping layers of magnetic insulator and superconductor, but not in non-overlapping structures. We show that this behavior…
Two-dimensional superconductors with time-reversal symmetry have a Z_2 topological invariant, that distinguishes phases with and without helical Majorana edge states. We study the topological phase transition in a class-DIII network model, and show that it is associated with a metal-insulator transition for the thermal conductance of the helical superconductor. The localization length diverges at the transition with critical exponent nu approx 2.0, about twice the known value in a chiral superconductor.
We study the stability against disorder of surface states of weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors) which are stacks of strong $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors), considering representative Dirac Hamiltonians in the Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes in various spatial dimensions. We show that, in the absence of disorder, surface Dirac fermions of weak $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators (superconductors) can be gapped out by a Dirac mass term which couples surface Dirac cones and leads to breaking of a translation symmetry (dimerization). The dimer…
The surface of a topological insulator is a closed two dimensional manifold. The surface states are described by the Dirac Hamiltonian in curved two dimensional spaces. For a slab-like sample with a magnetic field perpendicular to its top and bottom surfaces, there are chiral states delocalized on the four side faces. These "chiral sheets" carry both charge and spin currents. In strong magnetic fields the quantized charge Hall effect ($\s_{xy}=(2n+1)e^2/h$) will coexist with spin Hall effect.
We present transport measurements on quench condensed granular Pb films in which the grains are 40-80Åin diameter. These films show a cross over from an insulator to a superconductor behavior as the nominal thickness of the layer is increased. This transition is different in nature than those seen in quench condensed systems reported in the past where the films were either uniform or granular with grain sizes on the order of 200Å. We discuss possible physical mechanisms for these transitions.
We discuss the effects of disorder in time-reversal invariant topological insulators and superconductors in three spatial dimensions. For three-dimensional topological insulator in symplectic (AII) symmetry class, the phase diagram in the presence of disorder and a mass term, which drives a transition between trivial and topological insulator phases, is computed numerically by the transfer matrix method. The numerics is supplemented by a field theory analysis (the large-$N_f$ expansion where $N_f$ is the number of valleys or Dirac cones), from which we obtain the correlation length exponent, a…
Second-order topological insulators are crystalline insulators with a gapped bulk and gapped crystalline boundaries, but topologically protected gapless states at the intersection of two boundaries. Without further spatial symmetries, five of the ten Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes allow for the existence of such second-order topological insulators in two and three dimensions. We show that reflection symmetry can be employed to systematically generate examples of second-order topological insulators and superconductors, although the topologically protected states at corners (in two dimension…
Second-order topological insulators and superconductors have a gapped excitation spectrum in bulk and along boundaries, but protected zero modes at corners of a two-dimensional crystal or protected gapless modes at hinges of a three-dimensional crystal. A second-order topological phase can be induced by the presence of a bulk crystalline symmetry. Building on Shiozaki and Sato's complete classification of bulk crystalline phases with an order-two crystalline symmetry [Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 90}, 165114 (2014)], such as mirror reflection, twofold rotation, or inversion symmetry, we classify all co…
We investigate a topological insulator -- superconductor heterostructure with an Abrikosov vortex in a magnetic field. Large Zeeman field causes a topological phase transition in the system. We found that a Majorana fermion exists at the vortex core in the phase with zero first Chern number and does not exist at the phase with non-trivial first Chern number. This result is supported by the index theorem. This system provides an example in which a Majorana fermion emerges in a system with zero first Chern number.
In this review, we present a summary of some recent experiments on topological insulators (TIs) and superconducting nanowires and films. Electron-electron interaction (EEI), weak anti-localization (WAL) and anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR) effect found in TI films by transport measurements are reported. Then, transport properties of superconducting films, bridges and nanowires and proximity effect in non-superconducting nanowires are described. Finally, the interplay between TIs and superconductors (SCs) is also discussed.
We investigate superconductor-insulator quantum phase transitions in ultrathin capacitively coupled superconducting nanowires with proliferating quantum phase slips. We derive a set of coupled Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like renormalization group equations demonstrating that interaction between quantum phase slips in one of the wires gets modified due to the effect of plasma modes propagating in another wire. As a result, the superconductor-insulator phase transition in each of the wires is controlled not only by its own parameters but also by those of the neighboring wire as well as by m…
We study surface states of topological crystalline insulators and superconductors protected by inversion symmetry. These fall into the category of "higher-order" topological insulators and superconductors which possess surface states that propagate along one-dimensional curves (hinges) or are localized at some points (corners) on the surface. We show that the surface states of higher-order topological insulators and superconductors can be thought of as globally irremovable topological defects and provide a complete classification of these inversion-protected phases in any spatial dimension for…
We show that the interplay of cyclotron motion and Andreev reflection experienced by massless-Dirac-like charge carriers in topological-insulator surface states generates a Majorana-particle excitation. Based on an envelope-function description of the Dirac-Andreev edge states, we discuss the kinematic properties of the Majorana mode and find them to be possible to be tuned by changing the superconductor's chemical potential and/or the magnitude of the perpendicular magnetic field. Our proposal opens up new possibilities for studying Majorana fermions in a controllable setup.
We theoretically investigate the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) at the interface between 3D strong topological insulator (TI) and layered superconductor-magnetic insulator structure. The tunability of SPP through electronic doping can be enhanced when the magnetic permeability of the layered structure becomes higher. When the interface is gapped by superconductivity or perpendicular magnetism, SPP dispersion is further distorted, accompanied by a shift of group velocity and penetration depth. Such a shift of SPP reaches maximum when the magnitude of Fermi level approaches the gap value, and m…
The paper reports on the solution in the semi-space corresponding to topological surface state. It was shown that the exponential surface state results from selection of the energy outside the allowed energy range. In the result, the kinetic energy of the state is negative proving that the proposed state is not physically correct solution.
In this paper, a brief review of the history of topological insulators is given. After that, electronic transport experiments in topological insulator-superconductor hybrid structures, including experimental methods, physical properties and seemingly contradictory observations are discussed. Additionally, some new topological insulator hybrid structures are proposed.
Results on the superconductor to insulator transition in two-dimensional films are analyzed in terms of coupling of the system to a dissipative bath. Upon lowering the temperature the parameter that controls this coupling becomes relevant and a wide range of metallic phase is recovered.
An exhaustive classification scheme of topological insulators and superconductors is presented. The key property of topological insulators (superconductors) is the appearance of gapless degrees of freedom at the interface/boundary between a topologically trivial and a topologically non-trivial state. Our approach consists in reducing the problem of classifying topological insulators (superconductors) in d spatial dimensions to the problem of Anderson localization at a (d-1) dimensional boundary of the system. We find that in each spatial dimension there are precisely five distinct classes of t…
Square-root topology is a recently emerged subfield describing a class of insulators and superconductors whose topological nature is only revealed upon squaring their Hamiltonians, i.e., the finite energy edge states of the starting square-root model inherit their topological features from the zero-energy edge states of a known topological insulator/superconductor present in the squared model. Focusing on one-dimensional models, we show how this concept can be generalized to $2^n$-root topological insulators and superconductors, with $n$ any positive integer, whose rules of construction are sy…
A non-band theory is developed to describe the superconductor-insulator (SI) transtition in resistively shunted, single Josephson junctions. The $I-V$ characteristic is formulated by a Landauer-like formula and evaluated by the path-integral transfer-matrix method. The result is consistent with the recent experiments at around 80 $mK$. However, the insulator phase shrinks with decreasing temperature indicating that the single Josephson junction becomes all superconducting at absolute zero temperature, as long as dissipation is present.
We study junctions between superconductors mediated by the edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator. We show that such junctions exhibit a fractional Josephson effect, in which the current phase relation has a 4π, rather than a 2πperiodicity. This effect is a consequence of the conservation of fermion parity - the number of electrons modulo 2 - in a superconducting junction, and is closely related to the Z_2 topological structure of the quantum spin Hall insulator. Inelastic processes, which violate the conservation of fermion parity, lead to telegraph noise in the equilibrium supercurrent…
We discuss a topological classification of insulators and superconductors in the presence of both (non-spatial) discrete symmetries in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification and spatial reflection symmetry in any spatial dimensions. By using the structure of bulk Dirac Hamiltonians of minimal matrix dimensions and explicit constructions of topological invariants, we provide the complete classification, which still has the same dimensional periodicities with the original Altland-Zirnbauer classification. The classification of reflection-symmetry-protected topological insulators and superconductor…
We develop a theory of the low-temperature charge transfer between a superconductor and a hopping insulator. We show that the charge transfer is governed by the coherent two-electron -- Cooper pair conversion process, time reversal reflection, where electrons tunnel into superconductor from the localized states in the hopping insulator located near the interface, and calculate the corresponding interface resistance. This process is an analog to conventional Andreev reflection process. We show that the time reversal interface resistance is accessible experimentally, and that in mesoscopic struc…
As platforms of Majorana modes, topological insulator (quantum anomalous Hall insulator)/superconductor (SC) heterostructures have attracted tremendous attention over the past decade. Here we substitute the topological insulator by its higher-order counterparts. Concretely, we consider second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) without time-reversal symmetry and investigate SOTI/SC heterostructures in both two and three dimensions. Remarkably, we find that such novel heterostructures provide natural realizations of second-order topological superconductors (SOTSCs) which host Majorana corner m…
We study the dissipation physics of one dimensional mesoscopic superconducting quantum interference device array by using the field-theoretical renormalization group method. We observe length scale dependent superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition at very low temperature and also observe the dual behaviour of the system for the higher and lower values of magnetic field. At a critical magnetic field, we also observe a critical behaviour where the resistance is independent of length.
We study the Josephson transport in a high-Tc superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator(FI)/high-Tc superconductor numerically. We found the formation of a pi-junction in such systems. More remarkably the ground state of such junction alternates between 0- and pi-states when thickness of FI is increasing by a single atomic layer. We propose an experimental setup for observing the atomic-scale 0-pi transition. Such FI-based pi-junctions can be used to implement highly-coherent quantum bits.
We derive an index theorem for zero-energy Majorana fermion modes in a superconductor-topological insulator system in both two and three dimensions, which is valid for models with chiral symmetry as well as particle-hole symmetry. For more generic models without chiral symmetry, we suggest that Majorana zero-modes are classified by Z$_2$.
We report on transport properties of the topological insulator single crystal $Sb2Te3$ nanoflakes with thickness about from 7 to 50nm. A steep drop of resistance is appeared near $3K$ in the ultrathin $Sb2Te3$ nanoflakes, manifesting a superconducting transition. The magnetic field induced superconductor insulator transition of disordered 2D superconductor system is observed in the nanoflakes. The results show that the existence of certain optimum degree of disorder is a necessary condition for emergence of superconductivity.Temperature dependence of magneto-resistance shows a consecutive transf…
The relation between bulk topological invariants and experimentally observable physical quantities is a fundamental property of topological insulators and superconductors. In the case of chiral symmetric systems in odd spatial dimensions such as time-reversal invariant topological superconductors and topological insulators with sublattice symmetry, this relation has not been well understood. We clarify that the winding number which characterizes the bulk Z non-triviality of these systems can appear in electromagnetic and thermal responses in a certain class of heterostructure systems. It is al…
We theoretically investigate domain wall motion in an antiferromagnetic insulator layer caused by thermally generated spin currents in an adjacent spin-split superconductor layer. An uncompensated antiferromagnet interface enables the two crucial ingredients underlying the mechanism - spin splitting in the superconductor and absorption of spin currents by the antiferromagnet. Treating the superconductor using the quasiclassical theory and the antiferromagnet via Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert description, we find domain wall propagation along the thermal gradient with relatively large velocities $\si…
Opposite to the common idea of a magnetic order requirement to obtain spin current propagation, materials with no magnetic ordering have also been revealed to be efficient spin conductors. In this work, we investigate the spin current injection at the interface between a magnetic insulator and a superconductor. We are mainly interested in the paramagnetic insulator/superconductor interface however, our model also describes the ferromagnetic phase. We used the Schwinger bosonic formalism to describe the magnetic insulator and standard BCS theory was applied to treat the superconductor layer. In…
It has recently been shown that in every spatial dimension there exist precisely five distinct classes of topological insulators or superconductors. Within a given class, the different topological sectors can be distinguished, depending on the case, by a Z or a Z_2 topological invariant. This is an exhaustive classification. Here we construct representatives of topological insulators and superconductors for all five classes and in arbitrary spatial dimension d, in terms of Dirac Hamiltonians. Using these representatives we demonstrate how topological insulators (superconductors) in different d…
Three dimensional topological insulator represents a class of novel quantum phases hosting robust gapless boundary excitations, which is protected by global symmetries such as time reversal, charge conservation and spin rotational symmetry. In this work we systematically study another class of topological phases of weakly interacting electrons protected by spatial inversion symmetry, which generally don't support stable gapless boundary states. We classify these inversion-symmetric topological insulators and superconductors in the framework of K-theory, and construct their lattice models. We a…
In the heterostructure composed of a topological insulator sandwiched by two s-wave superconductors, the time reversal invariant topological superconducting phase, possessing helical Majorana edge modes, is found to exist when the two s-wave superconductors form a Josephson junction with a pi phase shift. Based on such a heterostructure, a helical Dirac-Majorana interferometer is proposed to directly measure a unique transport signature of the helical Majorana modes. Furthermore, we envision how our proposal can be realized on the basis of existing materials such as Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3 thin films…
Hybrid superconductor-semiconductor heterostructures are promising platforms for realizing topological superconductors and exploring Majorana bound states physics. Motivated by recent experimental progress, we theoretically study how magnetic insulators offer an alternative to the use of external magnetic fields for reaching the topological regime. We consider different setups, where: (1) the magnetic insulator induces an exchange field in the superconductor, which leads to a splitting in the semiconductor by proximity effect, and (2) the magnetic insulator acts as a spin-filter tunnel barrier…
We investigate ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) modulation in $d$-wave superconductor (SC)/ferromagnetic insulator (FI) bilayer systems theoretically. The modulation of the Gilbert damping in these systems reflects the existence of nodes in the $d$-wave SC and shows power-law decay characteristics within the low-temperature and low-frequency limit. Our results indicate the effectiveness of use of spin pumping as a probe technique to determine the symmetry of unconventional SCs with high sensitivity for nanoscale thin films.
We study the ground state properties of a superconductor - ferromagnet - insulator trilayer on the basis of a Hubbard Model featuring exchange splitting in the ferromagnet and electron - electron attraction in the superconductor. We solve the spin - polarized Hartree - Fock - Gorkov equations together with the Maxwell's equation (Ampere's law) fully self-consistently. For certain values of the exchange splitting we find that a spontaneous spin polarized current is generated in the ground state and is intimately related to Andreev bound states at the Fermi level. Moreover, the polarization of t…
We report on transport properties of Josephson junctions in hybrid superconducting-topological insulator devices, which show two striking departures from the common Josephson junction behavior: a characteristic energy that scales inversely with the width of the junction, and a low characteristic magnetic field for suppressing supercurrent. To explain these effects, we propose a phenomenological model which expands on the existing theory for topological insulator Josephson junctions.
Experimental results of I-V characteristics near the superconductor-insulator transition observed for disorder-tuned YBaCuO thinfilms are presented. The I-V characteristics exibit new quasiperiodic structures as a function of the current. The current interval, the number of the dI/dV peaks, and the magnetic field dependence of the peaks are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the resonant tunneling of a phase particle ina tilted-cosine potential for asingle Josephson junction with small capacitance.
After briefly recalling the quantum entanglement-based view of topological phases of matter in order to outline the general context, we give an overview of different approaches to the classification problem of topological insulators and superconductors of non-interacting Fermions. In particular, we review in some detail general symmetry aspects of the "ten-fold way" which forms the foundation of the classification, and put different approaches to the classification in relationship with each other. We end by briefly mentioning some of the results obtained on the effect of interactions, mainly i…
Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter which can not be adiabatically connected to conventional insulators and semiconductors. They are characterized by a full insulating gap in the bulk and gapless edge or surface states which are protected by time-reversal symmetry. These topological materials have been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a variety of systems, including HgTe quantum wells, BiSb alloys, and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystals. We review theoretical models, materials properties and experimental results on two-dimensional and three-dimensi…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy at very low temperature on homogeneously disordered superconducting Titanium Nitride thin films reveals strong spatial inhomogeneities of the superconducting gap $Δ$ in the density of states. Upon increasing disorder, we observe suppression of the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ towards zero, enhancement of spatial fluctuations in $Δ$, and growth of the $Δ/T_c$ ratio. These findings suggest that local superconductivity survives across the disorder-driven superconductor-insulator transition.
We introduce new three-dimensional topological phases of two-band models using the Pontryagin-Thom construction. In symmetry class A these are the infinitely many Hopf-Chern topological insulators, which are hybrids of layered Chern insulators and the Hopf insulator. In symmetry class C, there is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-classification with the non-trivial topological phase, the Hopf superconductor, being realized by a construction that doubles the usual Hopf insulator in momentum space. For these new topological phases we investigate the energy spectrum in the presence of a boundary and find gapless …
Exotic excitations arise at the interface between a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) and superconductors. For example, Majorana fermions with a linear dispersion, $E\sim k$, exist in a short $π$ Josephson junction on the TI surface. We show that in these systems, the Andreev bound states spectrum becomes nearly flat at zero energy when the chemical potential is sufficiently away from the Dirac point. The flat dispersion is well approximated by $E\sim k^N$, where $N$ scales with the chemical potential. Similar evolution from linear to flat dispersion also occurs for the subgap spect…
We develop a theory of a pseudogap state appearing near the superconductor-insulator transition in strongly disordered metals with attractive interaction. We show that such an interaction combined with the fractal nature of the single particle wave functions near the mobility edge leads to an anomalously large single particle gap in the superconducting state near SI transition that persists and even increases in the insulating state long after the superconductivity is destroyed. We give analytic expressions for the value of the pseudogap in terms of the inverse participation ratio of the corre…
Topological superconductors (TSCs) are of significant current interest because they offer promising platforms for finding Majorana fermions. Here we report a new superconductor synthesized by intercalating Cu into a naturally-formed topological insulator (TI) heterostructure consisting of Bi2Se3 TI units separated by nontopological PbSe units. For the first time in a TI-based superconductor, the specific-heat behavior of this material suggests the occurrence of unconventional superconductivity with gap nodes. The existence of gap nodes in a strongly spin-orbit coupled superconductor would give…
A remarkable discovery in recent years is that there exist various kinds of topological insulators and superconductors characterized by a periodic table according to the system symmetry and dimensionality. To physically realize these peculiar phases and study their properties, a critical step is to construct experimentally relevant Hamiltonians which support these topological phases. We propose a general and systematic method based on the quaternion algebra to construct the tight binding Hamiltonians for all the three-dimensional topological phases in the periodic table characterized by arbitr…
We report Coulomb blockade transport studies of semiconducting InAs nanowires grown with epitaxial superconducting Al and ferromagnetic insulator EuS on overlapping facets. Comparing experiment to a theoretical model, we associate cotunneling features in even-odd bias spectra with spin-polarized Andreev levels. Results are consistent with zero-field spin splitting exceeding the induced superconducting gap. Energies of subgap states are tunable on either side of zero via electrostatic gates.
We study theoretically spin pumping in bilayers consisting of superconductors and antiferromagnetic insulators. We consider both compensated and uncompensated interfaces and include both the regular scattering channel and the Umklapp scattering channel. We find that at temperatures close to the critical temperatures and precession frequencies much lower than the gap, the spin-current is enhanced in superconductors as compared to normal metals. Otherwise, the spin-current is suppressed. The relevant precession frequencies where the spin-current in SC/AFI is enhanced compared to NM/AFI is much l…
Topological insulators are new class of materials which are characterized by a bulk band gap like ordinary band insulator but have protected conducting states on their edge or surface. These states emerge out due to the combination of spin-orbit coupling and time reversal symmetry. Also these states are insensitive to scattering by non-magnetic impurities. A two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator has one dimensional (1D) edge states in which the spin-momentum locking of the electrons gives rise to quantum spin Hall effect. A three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator supports novel spin-…
We study the quantum Andreev oscillation induced by interference of the edge chiral Majorana fermions in junctions made of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and superconductors (SCs). We show two chiral Majorana fermions on a QAH edge with SC proximity generically have a momentum difference $Δk$, which depends on the chemical potentials of both the QAH insulator and the SC. Due to the spatial interference induced by $Δk$, the longitudinal conductance of QAH-SC junctions oscillates with respect to the edge lengths and the chemical potentials, which can be probed via charge transport. Furt…
In this review, we discuss recent progress in the explorations of topological materials beyond topological insulators; specifically, we focus on topological crystalline insulators and bulk topological superconductors. The basic concepts, model Hamiltonians, and novel electronic properties of these new topological materials are explained. The key role of symmetries that underlie their topological properties is elucidated. Key issues in their materials realizations are also discussed.
