Let C be a clutter and let I(C) be its edge ideal. This is a survey paper on the algebraic and combinatorial properties of R/I(C) and C, respectively. We give a criterion to estimate the regularity of R/I(C) and apply this criterion to give new proofs of some formulas for the regularity. If C is a clutter and R/I(C) is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, we present a formula for the regularity of the ideal of vertex covers of C and give a formula for the projective dimension of R/I(C). We also examine the associated primes of powers of edge ideals, and show that for a graph with a leaf, these sets form an ascending chain.
Gotzmann proved the persistence for minimal growth for ideals. His theorem is called Gotzmann's persistence theorem. In this paper, based on the combinatorics on binomial coefficients, a simple combinatorial proof of Gotzmann's persistence theorem in the special case of monomial ideals is given.
Symmetric strongly shifted ideals are a class of monomial ideals which come equipped with an action of the symmetric group and are analogous to the well-studied class of strongly stable monomial ideals. In this paper we focus on algebraic and combinatorial properties of symmetric strongly shifted ideals. On the algebraic side, we elucidate properties that pertain to behavior under ideal operations, primary decomposition, and the structure of their Rees algebra. On the combinatorial side, we develop a notion of partition Borel generators which leads to connections to discrete polymatroids, conv…
Let $I(G)$ be the edge ideal of a simple graph $G$. In this paper, we will give sufficient and necessary combinatorial conditions of $G$ in which the second symbolic and ordinary power of its edge ideal are Cohen-Macaulay (resp. Buchsbaum, generalized Cohen-Macaulay). As an application of our results, we will classify all bipartite graphs in which the second (symbolic) powers are Cohen-Macaulay (resp. Buchsbaum, generalized Cohen-Macaulay).
We apply some basic notions from combinatorial topology to establish various algebraic properties of edge ideals of graphs and more general Stanley-Reisner rings. In this way we provide new short proofs of some theorems from the literature regarding linearity, Betti numbers, and (sequentially) Cohen-Macaulay properties of edges ideals associated to chordal, complements of chordal, and Ferrers graphs, as well as trees and forests. Our approach unifies (and in many cases strengthens) these results and also provides combinatorial/enumerative interpretations of certain algebraic properties. We app…
Let I=(x^{v_1},...,x^{v_q} be a square-free monomial ideal of a polynomial ring K[x_1,...,x_n] over an arbitrary field K and let A be the incidence matrix with column vectors {v_1},...,{v_q}. We will establish some connections between algebraic properties of certain graded algebras associated to I and combinatorial optimization properties of certain polyhedrons and clutters associated to A and I respectively. Some applications to Rees algebras and combinatorial optimization are presented. We study a conjecture of Conforti and Cornuéjols using an algebraic approach.
In this paper we use polarization to study the behavior of the depth and regularity of a monomial ideal $I$, locally at a variable $x_i$, when we lower the degree of all the highest powers of the variable $x_i$ occurring in the minimal generating set of $I$, and examine the depth and regularity of powers of edge ideals of clutters using combinatorial optimization techniques. If $I$ is the edge ideal of an unmixed clutter with the max-flow min-cut property, we show that the powers of $I$ have non-increasing depth and non-decreasing regularity. In particular edge ideals of unmixed bipartite grap…
Associated to any hypergraph is a toric ideal encoding the algebraic relations among its edges. We study these ideals and the combinatorics of their minimal generators, and derive general degree bounds for both uniform and non-uniform hypergraphs in terms of balanced hypergraph bicolorings, separators, and splitting sets. In turn, this provides complexity bounds for algebraic statistical models associated to hypergraphs. As two main applications, we recover a well-known complexity result for Markov bases of arbitrary 3-way tables, and we show that the defining ideal of the tangential variety i…
Symbolic powers are studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. When the ideals are generated by quadratic squarefree monomials, the generators of the symbolic powers are obstructions to vertex covering in the associated graph and its blowups. As a result, perfect graphs play an important role in the theory, dual to the role played by perfect graphs in the theory of secants of monomial ideals. We use Gröbner degenerations as a tool to reduce questions about symbolic powers of arbitrary ideals to the monomial case. Among the applications are a new, unified approach to the Gröbner b…
Previous work by Mora and Sala provides the reduced Groebner basis of the ideal formed by the elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of degrees $k=1,\dots,n$, $\langle e_{1,n}(x), \dots, e_{n,n}(x) \rangle$. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimonozo expand upon this, finding the reduced Groebner basis of the ideal of elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables of degree $d$ for $d=n-k+1,\dots,n$ for $k\leq n$. In this paper, we further generalize their findings by using symbolic computation and experimentation to construct the reduced Groebner basis for the ideal generated by the elemen…
We introduce the combinatorial Lyubeznik resolution of monomial ideals. We prove that this resolution is isomorphic to the usual Lyubezbnik resolution. As an application, we give a combinatorial method to determine if an ideal is a Lyubeznik ideal. Furthermore, the minimality of the Lyubeznik resolution is characterized and we classify all the Lyubeznik symbols using combinatorial criteria. We get a combinatorial expression for the projective dimension, the length of Lyubeznik, and the arithmetical rank of a monomial ideal. We define the Lyubeznik totally ideals as those ideals that yield a mi…
Let C be a uniform clutter and let I=I(C) be its edge ideal. We prove that if C satisfies the packing property (resp. max-flow min-cut property), then there is a uniform Cohen-Macaulay clutter C1 satisfying the packing property (resp. max-flow min-cut property) such that C is a minor of C1. For arbitrary edge ideals of clutters we prove that the normality property is closed under parallelizations. Then we show some applications to edge ideals and clutters which are related to a conjecture of Conforti and Cornuéjols and to max-flow min-cut problems.
Weighted simplicial complexes (WSCs) are powerful tools for describing weighted cloud data or networks with weighted nodes. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to study WSCs via the concept of polarization. Polarization of a WSC allows one to construct a new (unweighted) simplicial complex which coincides with an object called the mixed wreath product. This new construction preserves several properties and invariants of the underlying simplicial complex of a WSC. Our main focus is to analyze WSCs through their underlying simplicial complexes and mixed wreath products. Combinatorially, w…
The construction of joins and secant varieties is studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. For ideals generated by quadratic monomials, the generators of the secant ideals are obstructions to graph colorings, and this leads to a commutative algebra version of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. Given any projective variety and any term order, we explore whether the initial ideal of the secant ideal coincides with the secant ideal of the initial ideal. For toric varieties, this leads to the notion of delightful triangulations of convex polytopes.
We give a combinatorial description of the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of a monomial ideal using the Newton polyhedron and some semigroups associated to the ideal.
We give a generalization of Hochster's formula for local cohomologies of square-free monomial ideals to monomial ideals, which are not necessarily square-free. Using this formula, we give combinatorial characterizations of generalized Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals. We also give other applications of the generalized Hochster's formula.
Given finite posets $P$ and $Q$, we consider a specific ideal $L(P,Q)$, whose minimal monomial generators correspond to order-preserving maps $ϕ:P\rightarrow Q$. We study algebraic invariants of those ideals. In particular, sharp lower and upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension are provided. Precise formulas are obtained for a large subclass of these ideals. Moreover, we provide complete characterizations for several algebraic properties of $L(P,Q)$, including being Buchsbaum, Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein and having a linear resolution. We also give a pa…
We consider path ideals associated to special classes of posets such as tree posets and cycles. We express their property of being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay in terms of the underlying poset. Moreover, monomial ideals, which arise from the Luce-decomposable model in algebraic statistics, can be viewed as path ideals of certain posets. We study invariants of these so-called \emph{Luce-decomposable} monomial ideals for diamond posets and products of chains. In particular, for these classes of posets, we explicitly compute their Krull dimension, their projective dimension, their regularity and t…
We define a new combinatorial object, which we call a labeled hypergraph, uniquely associated to any square-free monomial ideal. We prove several upper bounds on the regularity of a square-free monomial ideal in terms of simple combinatorial properties of its labeled hypergraph. We also give specific formulas for the regularity of square-free monomial ideals with certain labeled hypergraphs. Furthermore, we prove results in the case of one-dimensional labeled hypergraphs.
In recent years, the combinatorial properties of monomials ideals and binomial ideals have been widely studied. In particular, combinatorial interpretations of free resolution algorithms have been given in both cases. In this present work, we will introduce similar techniques, or modify existing ones to obtain two new results. The first is $S[Λ]$-resolutions of $Λ$-invariant submodules of $k[\mathbb{Z}^n]$ where $Λ$ is a lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ satisfying some trivial conditions. A consequence will be the ability to resolve submodules of $k[\mathbb{Z}^n/Λ]$, and in particular ideals $J$ of $…
In this paper, we obtain a combinatorial formula for computing the Betti numbers in the linear strand of edge ideals of bipartite Kneser graphs. We deduce lower and upper bounds for regularity of powers of edge ideals of these graphs in terms of associated combinatorial data and show that the lower bound is attained in some cases. Also, we obtain bounds on the projective dimension of edge ideals of these graphs in terms of combinatorial data.
To compute the local cohomology of powers of edge ideals one needs to know their saturations. The saturation of the second and third powers has been described in terms of the graph in [13] and [10]. In this article, we give a combinatorial description of the generators of the saturation of the fourth power. As a consequence, we are able to give a complete classification of the associated primes of the fourth power of edge ideals in terms of the graph.

Freiman's theorem gives a lower bound for the cardinality of the doubling of a finite set in $\RR^n$. In this paper we give an interpretation of his theorem for monomial ideals and their fiber cones. We call a quasi-equigenerated monomial ideal a Freiman ideal, if the set of its exponent vectors achieves Freiman's lower bound for its doubling. Algebraic characterizations of Freiman ideals are given, and finite simple graphs are classified whose edge ideals or matroidal ideals of its cycle matroids are Freiman ideals.
Let $X$ be a matrix with entries in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field $K$. We prove that, if the entries of $X$ outside some $(t \times t)$-submatrix are algebraically dependent over $K$, the arithmetical rank of the ideal $I_t(X)$ of $t$-minors of $X$ drops at least by one with respect to the generic case; under suitable assumptions, it drops at least by $k$ if $X$ has $k$ zero entries. This upper bound turns out to be sharp if $\mathrm{char}\, K=0$, since it then coincides with the lower bound provided by the local cohomological dimension.
With a particular focus on explicit computations and applications of the Koszul homology and Betti numbers of monomial ideals, the main goals of this thesis are the following: Analyze the Koszul homology of monomial ideals and apply it to describe the structure of monomial ideals. Describe algorithms to perform efficient computations of the homological invariants of monomial ideals. Apply the theory and computations on monomial ideals to problems inside and outside mathematics The thesis introduces as a main tool Mayer-Vietoris trees of monomial ideals.
The path ideal (of length t >=2) of a graph G is the monomial ideal, denoted I_t(G), whose generators correspond to the directed paths of length t in G. We study some of the algebraic properties of I_t(G) when G is a tree. We first show that I_t(G) is the facet ideal of a simplicial tree. As a consequence, the quotient ring R/I_t(G) is always sequentially Cohen-Macaulay, and the Betti numbers of R/I_t(G) do not depend upon the characteristic of the field. We study the case of the line graph in greater detail at the end of the paper.
In this paper we extend one direction of Fröberg's theorem on a combinatorial classification of quadratic monomial ideals with linear resolutions. We do this by generalizing the notion of a chordal graph to higher dimensions with the introduction of d-chorded and orientably-d-cycle-complete simplicial complexes. We show that a certain class of simplicial complexes, the d-dimensional trees, correspond to ideals having linear resolutions over fields of characteristic 2 and also give a necessary combinatorial condition for a monomial ideal to be componentwise linear over all fields.
In this paper we construct a combinatorial algorithm of resolution of singularities for binomial ideals, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. This algorithm is applied to any binomial ideal. This means ideals generated by binomial equations without any restriction, including monomials and $p$-th powers, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field. In particular, this algorithm works for toric ideals. However, toric geometry tools are not needed, the algorithm is constructed following the same point of view as Villamayor algorithm of resolution of singularities in characteristic zero…
We provide a new combinatorial approach to study the minimal free resolutions of edge ideals, that is, quadratic square-free monomial ideals. With this method we can recover most of the known results on resolutions of edge ideals with fuller generality, and at the same time, obtain new results. Past investigations on the resolutions of edge ideals usually reduced the problem to computing the dimensions of reduced homology or Koszul homology groups. Our approach circumvents the highly nontrivial problem of computing the dimensions of these groups and turns the problem into combinatorial questio…
We give a new combinatorial characterization of the big height of a squarefree monomial ideal leading to a new bound for the projective dimension of a monomial ideal.
We compute some algebraic invariants (e.g. depth, Castelnuovo - Mumford regularity) for a special class of monomial ideals, namely the ideals of mixed products. As a consequence, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulay ideals of mixed products.
Relying on the combinatorial classification of toric ideals using their bouquet structure, we focus on toric ideals of hypergraphs and study how they relate to general toric ideals. We show that hypergraphs exhibit a surprisingly general behavior: the toric ideal associated to any general matrix can be encoded by that of a $0/1$ matrix, while preserving the essential combinatorics of the original ideal. We provide two universality results about the unboundedness of degrees of various generating sets: minimal, Graver, universal Gröbner bases, and indispensable binomials. Finally, we provide a p…
We develop combinatorial tools to study the relationship between the Stanley depth of a monomial ideal $I$ and the Stanley depth of its compliment, $S/I$. Using these results we are able to prove that if $S$ is a polynomial ring with at most 5 indeterminates and $I$ is a square-free monomial ideal, then the Stanley depth of $S/I$ is strictly larger than the Stanley depth of $I$. Using a computer search, we are able to extend this strict inequality up to polynomial rings with at most 7 indeterminates. This partially answers questions asked by Propescu and Qureshi as well as Herzog.
This thesis is basically devoted to matroids -- fundamental structure of combinatorial optimization -- though some of our results concern simplicial complexes, or Euclidean spaces. We study old and new problems for these structures, with combinatorial, algebraic, and topological flavor.
Let $G$ be the circulant graph $C_n(S)$ with $S\subseteq\{ 1,\ldots,\left \lfloor\frac{n}{2}\right \rfloor\}$ and let $I(G)$ be its edge ideal in the ring $K[x_0,\ldots,x_{n-1}]$. Under the hypothesis that $n$ is prime we : 1) compute the regularity index of $R/I(G)$; 2) compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity when $R/I(G)$ is Cohen-Macaulay; 3) prove that the circulant graphs with $S=\{1,\ldots,s\}$ are sequentially $S_2$ . We end characterizing the Cohen-Macaulay circulant graphs of Krull dimension $2$ and computing their Cohen-Macaulay type and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
Let C be a uniform clutter, i.e., all the edges of C have the same size, and let A be the incidence matrix of C. We denote the column vectors of A by v1,...,vq. The vertex covering number of C, denoted by g, is the smallest number of vertices in any minimal vertex cover of C. Under certain conditions we prove that C is vertex critical. If C satisfies the max-flow min-cut property, we prove that A diagonalizes over the integers to an identity matrix and that v1,...,vq is a Hilbert basis. It is shown that if C has a perfect matching such that C has the packing property and g=2, then A diagonaliz…
In this paper, we explicitly give combinatorial formulas for the regularity of powers of edge ideals, $\reg(I(D)^k)$, of weighted oriented unmixed forests $D$ whose leaves are sinks ($V^+(D)$ are sinks). This combinatorial formula is a piecewise linear function of $k$, for $k \geq 1$.
Let K be a field and let A be the polynomial ring in n variables with coefficients in the field K We study the universal squarefree lexsegment ideals in A. We put our attention on their combinatorics computing some invariants. Moreover we study the link between such special class of squarefree lexsegment ideals and the so called s-sequences.
Let S be a polynomial algebra over a field. If I is the edge ideal of a perfect semiregular tree, then we give precise formulas for values of depth, Stanley depth, projective dimension, regularity and Krull dimension of S/I.
Many hard combinatorial problems can be modeled by a system of polynomial equations. N. Alon coined the term polynomial method to describe the use of nonlinear polynomials when solving combinatorial problems. We continue the exploration of the polynomial method and show how the algorithmic theory of polynomial ideals can be used to detect k-colorability, unique Hamiltonicity, and automorphism rigidity of graphs. Our techniques are diverse and involve Nullstellensatz certificates, linear algebra over finite fields, Groebner bases, toric algebra, convex programming, and real algebraic geometry.
We study the degree of non-homogeneous lattice ideals over arbitrary fields, and give formulae to compute the degree in terms of the torsion of certain factor groups of Z^s and in terms of relative volumes of lattice polytopes. We also study primary decompositions of lattice ideals over an arbitrary field using the Eisenbud-Sturmfels theory of binomial ideals over algebraically closed fields. We then use these results to study certain families of integer matrices (PCB, GPCB, CB, GCB matrices) and the algebra of their corresponding matrix ideals. In particular, the family of generalized positiv…
Zonotopal algebra interweaves algebraic, geometric and combinatorial properties of a given linear map X. Of basic significance in this theory is the fact that the algebraic structures are derived from the geometry (via a non-linear procedure known as "the least map"), and that the statistics of the algebraic structures (e.g., the Hilbert series of various polynomial ideals) are combinatorial, i.e., computable using a simple discrete algorithm known as "the valuation function". On the other hand, the theory is somewhat rigid since it deals, for the given X, with exactly two pairs each of which …
In this paper, we unfold balanced and totally balanced neighborhood hypergraphs to discover new classes of normally torsion-free monomial ideals. As a consequence, we establish that the closed neighborhood ideals and the dominating ideals of strongly chordal graphs are normally torsion-free. We discuss the stable sets of associated primes of the dominating ideals of cycles and characterize all the cycles with normally torsion-free dominating ideals.
Let R be a commutative ring with unity, M be an unitary R-module and Γ be a simple graph. This research article is an interplay of combinatorial and algebraic properties of M . We show a combinatorial object completely determines an algebraic object and characterise all finite abelian groups. We discuss the correspondence between essential ideals of R, submodules of M and vertices of graphs arising from M . We examine various types of equivalence relations on objects of M. We study essential ideals corresponding to elements of an object over hereditary and regular rings. Further, we study isom…
