RO*-algebras are defined and studied. For RO*-algebra T, using properties of partial order, it is established that the set of bounded elements can be endowed with C*-norm. The structure of commutative subalgebras of T is considered and the Spectral Theorem for any self-adjoint element of T is proven.
Let A be a C*-algebra. It is shown that A is an AW*-algebra if, and only if, each maximal abelian self--adjoint subalgebra of A is monotone complete. An analogous result is proved for Rickart C*-algebras; a C*-algebra is a Rickart C*-algebra if, and only if, it is unital and each maximal abelian self--adjoint subalgebra of A is monotone σ-complete.
The main goal of this paper is to introduce and explore an appropriate notion of weakly Rickart JB$^*$-triples. We introduce weakly order Rickart JB$^*$-triples, and we show that a C$^*$-algebra $A$ is a weakly (order) Rickart JB$^*$-triple precisely when it is a weakly Rickart C$^*$-algebra. We also prove that the Peirce-2 subspace associated with a tripotent in a weakly order Rickart JB$^*$-triple is a Rickart JB$^*$-algebra in the sense of Ayupov and Arzikulov. By extending a classical property of Rickart C$^*$-algebras, we prove that every weakly order Rickart JB$^*$-triple is generated by…
We introduce and investigate new classes of Jordan algebras which are close to but wider than Rickart and Baer Jordan algebras considered in our previous paper. Such Jordan algebras are called RJ- and BJ-algebras respectively. Criterions are given for a Jordan algebra to be a BJ-algebra. Also, it is proved that every finite dimensional Jordan algebra without nilpotent elements, which have square roots, is a BJ-algebra.
There are Jordan analogues of annihilators in Jordan algebras which are called Jordan annihilators. The present paper is devoted to investigation of those Jordan algebras every Jordan annihilator of which is generated by an idempotent as an inner ideal. We prove that a finite dimensional unital Jordan algebra satisfies this condition if and only if it has no nilpotent elements, and in this case it is a direct sum of simple Jordan algebras.
Following Birkhoff and von Neumann, quantum logic has traditionally been based on the lattice of closed linear subspaces of some Hilbert space, or, more generally, on the lattice of projections in a von Neumann algebra A. Unfortunately, the logical interpretation of these lattices is impaired by their nondistributivity and by various other problems. We show that a possible resolution of these difficulties, suggested by the ideas of Bohr, emerges if instead of single projections one considers elementary propositions to be families of projections indexed by a partially ordered set C(A) of approp…
The classical Gelfand--Naimark theorems provide important insight into the structure of general and of commutative C*-algebras. It is shown that these can be generalized to certain ordered *-algebras. More precisely, for $σ$-bounded closed ordered *-algebras a faithful representation as operators is constructed. Similarly, for commutative such algebras, a faithful representation as complex-valued functions is constructed if an additional necessary regularity condition is fulfilled. These results generalize the Gelfand--Naimark representation theorems to classes of *-algebras larger than C*-alg…
Motivated by algebraic quantum field theory and our previous work we study properties of inductive systems of \ $C^*$-algebras over arbitrary partially ordered sets. A partially ordered set can be represented as the union of the family of its maximal upward directed subsets indexed by elements of a certain set. We consider a topology on the set of indices generated by a base of neighbourhoods. Examples of those topologies with different properties are given. An inductive system of $C^*$-algebras and its inductive limit arise naturally over each maximal upward directed subset. Using those induc…
We study the question when for a given *-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ a sequence of cones $C_n\in M_n(\mathcal{A})$ can be realized as cones of positive operators in a faithful *-representation of $\mathcal{A}$ on a Hilbert space. A characterization of operator algebras which are completely boundedly isomorphic to $C\sp*$-algebras is presented.
We show that unital simple C*-algebras with tracial topological rank zero which are locally approximated by subhomogeneous C^-algebras can be classified by their ordered $K$-theory. We apply this classification result to show that certain simple crossed products are isomorphic if they have the same ordered $K$-theory. In particular, irrational higher dimensional non-commutative tori of the form $C({\mathbb T}^k)\times_θ{\mathbb Z}$ are in fact inductive limits of circle algebras.
The aim of this article is to describe a class of *-algebras that allows to treat well-behaved algebras of unbounded operators independently of a representation. To this end, Archimedean ordered *-algebras (*-algebras whose real linear subspace of Hermitian elements are an Archimedean ordered vector space with rather weak compatibilities with the algebraic structure) are examined. The order induces a translation-invariant uniform metric which comes from a C*-norm in the bounded case. It will then be shown that uniformly complete Archimedean ordered *-algebras have good order properties (like e…
The paper deals with $C^*$-algebras generated by a net of Hilbert spaces over a partially ordered set. The family of those algebras constitutes a net of $C^*$-algebras over the same set. It is shown that every such an algebra is graded by the first homotopy group of the partially ordered set. We consider inductive systems of $C^*$-algebras and their limits over maximal directed subsets. We also study properties of morphisms for nets of Hilbert spaces as well as nets of $C^*$-algebras.
Certain $*$-semigroups are associated with the universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a partial isometry, which is itself the universal $C^*$-algebra of a $*$-semigroup. A fundamental role for a $*$-structure on a semigroup is emphasized, and ordered and matricially ordered $*$-semigroups are introduced, along with their universal $C^*$-algebras. The universal $C^*$-algebra generated by a partial isometry is isomorphic to a relative Cuntz-Pimsner $C^*$-algebra of a $C^*$-correspondence over the $C^*$-algebra of a matricially ordered $*$-semigroup. One may view the $C^*$-algebra of a partial isom…
We calculate the ordered K_0-group of a graph C*-algebra and mention applications of this result to AF-algebras, states on the K_0-group of a graph algebra, and tracial states of graph algebras.
The Baumslag-Solitar group is an example of an HNN extension. Spielberg showed that it has a natural positive cone, and that it is then a quasi-lattice ordered group in the sense of Nica. We give conditions for an HNN extension of a quasi-lattice ordered group $(G,P)$ to be quasi-lattice ordered. In that case, if $(G,P)$ is amenable as a quasi-lattice ordered group, then so is the HNN extension.
In a recent paper on exotic crossed products, we included a lemma concerning ideals of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra. Buss, Echterhoff, and Willett have pointed out to us that our proof of this lemma contains an error. In fact, it remains an open question whether the lemma is true as stated. In this note we indicate how to contain the resulting damage. Our investigation of the above question leads us to define two properties \emph{ordered} and \emph{weakly ordered} for invariant ideals of Fourier-Stieltjes algebras, and we initiate a study of these properties.
In this paper, we introduce a C*-algebra associated to any substitution (via its Bratteli diagram model). We show that this C*-algebra contains the partial crossed product C*-algebra of the corresponding Bratteli-Vershik system and show that these algebras are invariant under equivalence of the Bratteli diagrams. We also show that the isomorphism class of the algebras, together with a distinguished set of generators, is a complete invariant for equivalence of Bratteli diagrams.
A classical result of Sherman says that if the space of self-adjoint elements in a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is a lattice with respect to its canonical order, then $\mathcal{A}$ is commutative. We give a new proof of this theorem which shows that it is intrinsically connected with the spectral theory of positive operator semigroups. Our methods also show that some important Perron--Frobenius like spectral results fail to hold in any non-commutative $C^*$-algebra.
Consider a product system over the positive cone of a quasi-lattice ordered group. We construct a Fell bundle over an associated groupoid so that the cross-sectional algebra of the bundle is isomorphic to the Nica-Toeplitz algebra of the product system. Under the additional hypothesis that the left actions in the product system are implemented by injective homomorphisms, we show that the cross-sectional algebra of the restriction of the bundle to a natural boundary subgroupoid coincides with the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of the product system. We apply these results to improve on existing suf…
We define notions of semi-saturatedness and orthogonality for a Fell bundle over a quasi-lattice ordered group. We show that a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules can be naturally extended to a semi-saturated and orthogonal Fell bundle whenever it is simplifiable. Conversely, a semi-saturated and orthogonal Fell bundle is completely determined by the positive fibres and its cross sectional $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is isomorphic to a relative Cuntz--Pimsner algebra of a simplifiable product system of Hilbert bimodules. We show that this correspondence is part of an equivalence b…
Universal continuous calculi are defined and it is shown that for every finite tuple of pairwise commuting Hermitian elements of a Su*-algebra (an ordered *-algebra that is symmetric, i.e. "strictly" positive elements are invertible, and uniformly complete), such a universal continuous calculus exists. This generalizes the continuous calculus for C*-algebras to a class of generally unbounded ordered *-algebras. On the way, some results about *-algebras of continuous functions on locally compact spaces are obtained. The approach used throughout is rather elementary and especially avoids any rep…
Consider the pair $(G,P)$ consisting of an abelian lattice-ordered discrete group $G$ and its positive cone $P$. Let $α$ be an action of $P$ by extendible endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We show that the Nica-Toeplitz algebra $\mathcal{T}_{\textrm{cov}}(A\times_α P)$ is a full corner of a group crossed product $\mathcal{B}\rtimes_βG$, where $\mathcal{B}$ is a subalgebra of $\ell^{\infty}(G,A)$ generated by a collection of faithful copies of $A$, and the action $β$ on $\mathcal{B}$ is given by the shift on $\ell^{\infty}(G,A)$. By using this realization, we show that the ideal $\mathcal{I…
A semicrossed product is a non-selfadjoint operator algebra encoding the action of a semigroup on an operator or C*-algebra. We prove that, when the positive cone of a discrete lattice ordered abelian group acts on a C*-algebra, the C*-envelope of the associated semicrossed product is a full corner of a crossed product by the whole group. By constructing a C*-cover that itself is a full corner of a crossed product, and computing the Shilov ideal, we obtain an explicit description of the C*-envelope. This generalizes a result of Davidson, Fuller, and Kakariadis from $\mathbb{Z}_+^n$ to the clas…
A nest representation of a strongly maximal TAF algebra $A$ is a representation $π$ for which $\operatorname{Lat} π(A) is totally ordered. We prove that if the spectrum of $A$ is totally ordered, or if $\operatorname{Lat} π(A)$ contains an atom, then $\operatorname{ker} π$ is a meet irreducible ideal.
$A^2_α$ will denote the weighted $L^2$ Bergman space. Given a subset $S$ of the open unit disc we define $Ω(S)$ to be the infimum of $\{s| \exists f \in A^2_{s-2}, f\neq 0, \mbox{ having $S$ as its zero set} \}$.By classical results on Hardy space there are sets $S$ for which $Ω(S)=1$. Using von Neumann dimension techniques and cusp forms we give examples of $S$ where $1<Ω(S)<\infty$. By using a left order on certain Fuchsian groups we are able to calculate $Ω(S)$ exactly if $Ω(S)$ is the orbit of a Fuchsian group. This technique also allows us to derive in a new way well known results on zero…
The note is concerned with inductive systems of Toeplitz algebras and their $*$-homomorphisms over arbitrary partially ordered sets. The Toeplitz algebra is the reduced semigroup $C^*$-algebra for the additive semigroup of non-negative integers. It is known that every partially ordered set can be represented as the union of the family of its maximal upward directed subsets indexed by elements of some set. In our previous work we have studied a topology on this set of indexes. For every maximal upward directed subset we consider the inductive system of Toeplitz algebras that is defined by a giv…
The notion of isomorphism of stable AF-C*-algebras is considered in this paper in the case when the corresponding Bratteli diagram is stationary, i.e., is associated with a single square primitive nonsingular incidence matrix. C*-isomorphism induces an equivalence relation on these matrices, called C*-equivalence. We show that the associated isomorphism equivalence problem is decidable, i.e., there is an algorithm that can be used to check in a finite number of steps whether two given primitive nonsingular matrices are C*-equivalent or not.
Let A be a C*-algebra with real rank zero which has the stable weak cancellation property. Let I be an ideal of A such that I is stable and satisfies the corona factorization property. We prove that 0->I->A->A/I->0 is a full extension if and only if the extension is stenotic and K-lexicographic. As an immediate application, we extend the classification result for graph C*-algebras obtained by Tomforde and the first named author to the general non-unital case. In combination with recent results by Katsura, Tomforde, West and the first author, our result may also be used to give a purely K-theor…
