The gauge formalism in \textit{telepalallel gravity} provides an interesting viewpoint to describe interactions according to an anholonomic observer's tetrad basis. Without going into assessing the complete viability of quantization in an early stage, this paper explores classical gravity within the framework of a classical-to-quantum bridge between the SU$(1, 3)$ Yang--Mills gauge formalism and the gauge-like treatment of teleparallel gravity. Specifically, the perturbed spacetime algebra with Weitzenböck connection can be assimilated to a local complexification based on the SU$(1,3)$ Yang--Mills theory, what we call hypercolor or, simply, color. The formulation of the hypercolor dynamics is build by a translational gauge, as in the teleparallel gravities. In particular, this work analyses small perturbations of a metric decomposition related to the Wilson line and the Kaluza--Klein metric, but obtaining electrodynamics in four dimensions. The spacetime coordinates are now matrices that represent elements of the $\mathfrak{su}(1,3)$ algebra. To make compatible the formulation of a colored gravity with the Lorentz force and the Maxwell equations, it is enough to define every energy potential origin as 0 in the event horizon instead of the classic zero potential at infinity. Under the colored gravity framework, standard electromagnetism can be obtained as a particular abelian case.
Within the context of a $5D$ space-time, we construct a unified theory of gravity and electromagnetism from which the Einstein field equations and Maxwell equations emerge, with homogenous Maxwell equations appearing naturally. We also introduce a well-defined five dimensional energy-momentum tensor consistent with our unification scheme. A correction term appears in Maxwell equations which can be used to explain the recently discovered galactic magnetic fields.
The coupled Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations are considered for a static, spherically symmetric system of two fermions in a singlet spinor state. Stable soliton-like solutions are shown to exist, and we discuss the regularizing effect of gravity from a Feynman diagram point of view.
We study a Born-Infeld inspired model of gravity and electromagnetism in which both types of fields are treated on an equal footing via a determinantal approach in a metric-affine formulation. Though this formulation is a priori in conflict with the postulates of metric theories of gravity, we find that the resulting equations can also be obtained from an action combining the Einstein-Hilbert action with a minimally coupled nonlinear electrodynamics. As an example, the dynamics is solved for the charged static black hole.
The coincidence of quantum cosmology solutions generated by solving a Euclidean version of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for gravity and by using the complex canonical transformation of the Ashtekar variables is discussed. An examination of similar solutions for the free electromagnetic field shows that this coincidence is an artifact of the homogeneity of the cosmological space. (This paper will appear in a festchrift volume for Jerzy Plebanski)
It is shown that unification of gravity and electromagnetism can be achieved using an affine non-symmetric connection $Γ^λ_{μν} \neq Γ^λ_{νμ}$ and $Γ_μ= Γ^λ_{[μλ]}\neq 0$. $Γ_μ$ is shown to be the source of the electromagnetic field. This unification is based on {\em projective invariance} which is broken by matter fields, opening up the possibility of a unified theory of all forces in which gravity emerges as a classical field.
It is shown the antisymmetric part of the metric tensor is the potential for the spin field. Various metricity conditions are discussed and comparisons are made to other theories, including Einstein's. It is shown in the weak field limit the theory reduces to one with a symmetric metric tensor and totally antisymmetric torsion. It is also shown, due to gauge invariance, the electromagnetic field must be present.
Electromagnetic field produced by magnetic multipoles in hyperbolic motion is derived and compared with electromagnetic field produced by electric multipoles in hyperbolic motion. The resulting fields are related by duality symmetry. Radiative properties of these solutions are demonstrated. In the second part an analogous, uniformly accelerated source of gravitational radiation is studied, within exact Einstein's theory. Radiative characteristics of the corresponding solution as flux of the radiation and the total mass-energy of the system are calculated and graphically illustrated.
Unification of gravity and electromagnetism based on a theory with an affine non-symmetric connection $Γ^λ_{μν} \neq Γ^λ_{νμ}$ and $Γ_μ= Γ^λ_{[μλ]}\neq 0$, proposed by S. N. Bose in 1953, is revisited in the context of modern developments in high energy physics. It is shown that electrogravity unification can be achieved at a {\em premetric} stage, and that this unification based on {\em projective invariance} is broken by matter fields, opening up the possibility of a unified theory of all forces in which gravity emerges as a classical field. The theory predicts $α_{sym} = \frac{1}{9}$ in the…
The phenomenological consequences of unification of Einstein gravity and electromagnetism in an early phase of a Machian universe with a very small and uniform electrical charge density $ρ_q$ are explored. A form of the Strong Equivalence Principle for unified electrogravity is first formulated, and it immediately leads to (i) the empirical Schuster-Blackett law relating the magnetic moments and angular momenta of neutral astronomical bodies, (ii) an analogous relation between the linear acceleration of neutral massive bodies and associated electric fields, (iii) gravitational lensing in exces…
We consider an Einstein-Maxwell action modified by the addition of three terms coupling the electromagnetic strength to the curvature tensor. The corresponding generalized Maxwell equations imply a variation of the speed of light in a vacuum. We determine this variation in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We show that light propagates at a speed greater than $c$ when a simple condition is satisfied.
The crucial but undocumented Dolan-McCrea variational method is richly applied. Using the said method, we analytically derived a field equation comprising entirely of geometric structures and we investigate how effectively it describes gravitational and electromagnetic phenomena. The procedure we adopted involved constructing a scalar invariant as was the case for Einstein's General Relativity (GR) except that the scalar of parameterized Absolute Parallelism geometey consists of the Ricci scalar plus an additional term, which is essentially the contortion. %Based on earlier discourse, a good s…
We deal with the gravitational theory relevant to gravito-electromagnetism (GEM) exactly. It is shown that the theory can be decomposed in terms of two sectors of Abelian gauge field theories. The two sectors dominate the whole action in an inverse way, showing a sign of strong-weak duality.
By the end of the evaluation of this research artifact, readers would be able to describe the effect of conducted plasma on evolution of stellar objects. In this script, we have analyzed the stability of charged cylindrically symmetric stellar objects in the context of f(R; T) theory of gravity. We have fabricated field equations and their conforming dynamical equations and then we have used perturbation scheme for additional analysis. Adiabatic index Γ has been used to sort inequalities in the Newtonian and the post Newtonian regimes. At the end we caught some extra limitations due to which w…
A new derivation of surface charges for 3+1 gravity coupled to Electromagnetism is obtained. Gravity theory is written in the tetrad-connection variables. The general derivation starts from the Lagrangian and uses the covariant symplectic formalism in the language of forms. For gauge theories surface charges disentangle physical from gauge symmetries through the use of Noether identities and the exactness symmetry condition. The surface charges are quasilocal, explicitly coordinate independent, gauge invariant, and background independent. For a black hole family solution the surface charge con…
We present a unified description of gravity and electromagnetism in the framework of a $Z_2$ noncommutative differential calculus. It can be considered as a ``discrete version" of Kaluza-Klein theory, where the fifth continuous dimension is replaced by two discrete points. We derive an action which coincides with the dimensionally reduced one of the ordinary Kaluza-Klein theory.
Electromagnetic Quasinormal modes of Dyonic AdS black holes with quasi-topological electromagnetism in a Horndeski gravity theory mimicking EGB gravity at $D \rightarrow 4$
In 2008-2009, F. Costa and C. Herdeiro proposed a new gravito-electromagnetic analogy, based on tidal tensors. We show that connections on the tangent bundle of the space-time manifold can help not only in finding a covnenient geometrization of their ideas, but also a common mathematical description of the main equations of gravity and electromagnetism.
In this paper, we study the geodesic motion in the spacetime of a SU(2)-colored (A)dS black hole in conformal gravity, and also we investigate spacetime features, such as light spheres and horizons. Moreover, we derive the analytical solutions for the equation of motion of test particles and light rays using Weierstrass elliptic and Kleinian sigma functions. Depending on the particle energy levels and angular momentums, we classify the solutions of the geodesic equations. Furthermore, several examples of possible types of orbits illustrate the results
We investigate $ Y(R) F^2 $-type coupling of electromagnetic fields to gravity. After we derive field equations by a first order variational principle from the Lagrangian formulation of the non-minimally coupled theory, we look for static, spherically symmetric, magnetic monopole solutions. We point out that the solutions can provide possible geometries which may explain the flatness of the observed rotation curves of galaxies.
We construct the most general effective Lagrangian coupling gravity and electromagnetism up to mass dimension 6 by enumerating all possible non-minimal coupling terms respecting both diffeomorphism and gauge invariance. In all, there are only two unique terms after field re-definitions; one is known to arise from loop effects in QED while the other is a parity violating term which may be generated by weak interactions within the standard model of particle physics. We show that neither the cosmological propagation of light nor, contrary to earlier claims, solar system tests of General Relativit…
We showed before that self-dual electromagnetism in noncommutative (NC) spacetime is equivalent to self-dual Einstein gravity. This result implies a striking picture about gravity: Gravity can emerge from electromagnetism in NC spacetime. Gravity is then a collective phenomenon emerging from gauge fields living in fuzzy spacetime. We elucidate in some detail why electromagnetism in NC spacetime should be a theory of gravity. In particular, we show that NC electromagnetism is realized through the Darboux theorem as a diffeomorphism symmetry G which is spontaneously broken to symplectomorphism H…
In Kaluza derived theories the electromagnetic potential is interpreted as a part of the metric in a higher dimensional theory of gravity. Here we present a more Yang-Mills like unification of classical electromagnetism and gravity within five dimensions, where the electromagnetic potential is related to the connecion and the field strength to the curvature. In addition some aspects of a quantum theory can be described in the context of the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern Theorem. This approach offers new coupling mechanisms between gravity and electromagnetism.
In general relativity, Maxwell's equations are embedded in curved spacetime through the minimal prescription, but this could change if strong-gravity modifications are present. We show that with a nonminimal coupling between gravity and a massless vector field, nonperturbative effects can arise in compact stars. We find solutions describing stars with nontrivial vector field configurations, some of which are associated to an instability, while others are not. The vector field can be interpreted either as the electromagnetic field, or as a hidden vector field weakly coupled with the standard mo…
We presented a model for unification of electricity and gravity. We have found a consistent description of all physical quantities pertaining to the system. We have provided limiting values for all physical values. These values are neither zero nor infinity. Our universe is described at all times by the four dimensional constants $c, \hbar, k, G$ only. The remnant of vacuum remains at all epochs with different values. The present cosmological puzzles are justified as due to the consequences of cosmic quantization developed in this work.
We address questions regarding construction and implications of gauge-invariant "dressed" observables in nontrivial background geometries such as that of a black hole. Formally, such observables can be constructed, e.g. by locating points with geodesics launched from infinity. However, practical complications arise in non-trivial geometries, and in particular for observables behind black hole horizons. Greater simplicity can be achieved by considering null constructions where the dressing lies along a null geodesic, or null surface such as a cone. We first investigate basic properties of these…
The unification of quantum field theory and general relativity is a fundamental goal of modern physics. In many cases, theoretical efforts to achieve this goal introduce auxiliary gravitational fields, ones in addition to the familiar symmetric second-rank tensor potential of general relativity, and lead to nonmetric theories because of direct couplings between these auxiliary fields and matter. Here, we consider an example of a metric-affine gauge theory of gravity in which torsion couples nonminimally to the electromagnetic field. This coupling causes a phase difference to accumulate between…
We present a framework in which the projective symmetry of the Einstein-Hilbert action in metric-affine gravity is used to induce an effective coupling between the Dirac lagrangian and the Maxwell field. The effective $U(1)$ gauge potential arises as the trace of the non-metricity tensor $Q_{μa}{}^a$ and couples in the appropriate way to the Dirac fields to in order to allow for local phase shifts. On shell, the obtained theory is equivalent to Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell theory in presence of Dirac spinors.
The Eddington Lagrangian in the purely affine formulation of general relativity generates the Einstein equations with the cosmological constant. The Ferraris-Kijowski purely affine Lagrangian for the electromagnetic field, which has the form of the Maxwell Lagrangian with the metric tensor replaced by the symmetrized Ricci tensor, is dynamically equivalent to the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian in the metric formulation. We show that the sum of the two affine Lagrangians is dynamically inequivalent to the sum of the analogous Lagrangians in the metric-affine/metric formulation. We also show that s…
In a previous paper, we have introduced a new unified description of the main equations of the gravitational and of the electromagnetic field, in terms of tidal tensors and connections on the tangent bundle TM of the space-time manifold. In the present work, we relate these equations to variational procedures on the tangent bundle. The Ricci scalar of the proposed connection is dynamically equivalent to the usual Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian. Also, in order to be able to perform these variational procedures, we find an appropriate completion of the metric tensor (from the base manifold) up to a…
We describe a class of unified theories of electromagnetism and gravity. The Lagrangian is of the BF type, with a potential for the B-field, the gauge group is U(2) (complexified). Given a choice of the potential function the theory is a deformation of (complex) general relativity and electromagnetism, and describes just two propagating polarisations of the graviton and two of the photon. When gravity is switched off the theory becomes the usual non-linear electrodynamics with a general structure function. The Einstein-Maxwell theory can be recovered by sending some of the parameters of the de…
When a charged insulating spherical shell is uniformly accelerated, an oppositely directed electric field is produced inside. Outside the field is the Born field of a uniformly accelerated charge, modified by a dipole. Radiation is produced. When the acceleration is annulled by the nearly uniform gravity field of an external shell with a 1 + beta cos theta surface distribution of mass, the differently viewed Born field is static and joins a static field outside the external shell; no radiation is produced. We discuss gravitational analogues of these phenomena. When a massive spherical shell is…
In this paper we investigate the gravitational vacuum stars which called gravastars in the non-minimally coupled models with electromagnetic and gravitational fields. We consider two non-minimal models and find the corresponding spherically symmetric exact solutions in the interior of the star consisting of the dark energy condensate. Our models turn out to be Einstein-Maxwell model at the outside of the star and the solutions become the Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m solution. The physical quantities of these models are continuous and non-singular in some range of parameters and the exterior geometry c…
Following earlier works of Dereli and collaborators, we study a three dimensional toy model where we extend the topologically massive gravity with electrodynamics by the most general $RF^2$-type non-minimal coupling terms. Here $R$ denotes the possible curvature terms and $F$ denotes the electromagnetic 2-form. We derive the variational field equations and look for exact solutions on constant negative curvature space-times with a constant, self-dual electromagnetic field. The notion of self-dual electromagnetic fields in three dimensions is introduced by Dereli and collaborators in the study o…
We first review the cosmological constant problem, and then mention a conjecture of Feynman according to which the general relativistic theory of gravity should be reformulated in such a way that energy does not couple to gravity. We point out that our recent unification of gravitation and electromagnetism through a symmetric tensor has the property that the free electromagnetic energy and the vacuum energy do not contribute explicitly to the curvature of spacetime just like the free gravitational energy. Therefore in this formulation of general relativity, the vacuum energy density has its ve…
The metric-affine Lagrangian of Ponomarev and Obukhov for the unified gravitational and electromagnetic field is linear in the Ricci scalar and quadratic in the tensor of homothetic curvature. We apply to this Lagrangian the variational principle with the tetrad and spin connection as dynamical variables and show that, in this approach, the field equations are the Einstein-Maxwell equations if we relate the electromagnetic potential to the trace of the spin connection. We also show that, as in the Ponomarev-Obukhov formulation, the generally covariant Dirac Lagrangian gives rise to the standar…
We consider four-dimensional conformal gravity coupled to the U(1) Maxwell and SU(2) Yang-Mills fields. We study the structure of general black hole solutions carrying five independent parameters: the mass, the electric U(1) and magnetic SU(2) charges, the massive spin-2 charge and the thermodynamical pressure associated with the cosmological constant, which is an integration constant in conformal gravity. We derive the thermodynamical first law of the black holes. We obtain some exact solutions including an extremal black hole with vanishing mass and entropy, but with non-trivial SU(2) Yang-M…
We extend the correspondence between metric-affine Ricci-Based Gravity theories and General Relativity (GR) to the case in which the matter sector is represented by linear and nonlinear electromagnetic fields. This complements previous studies focused on fluids and scalar fields. We establish the general algorithm that relates the matter fields in the GR and RBG frames and consider some applications. In particular, we find that the so-called Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity theory coupled to Maxwell electromagnetism is in direct correspondence with GR coupled to Born-Infeld electromagnet…
We study the color-decoration of higher-spin (anti)-de Sitter gravity in three dimensions. We show that the rainbow vacua, which we found recently for the colored gravity theory, also pertain in the colored higher-spin theory. The color singlet spin-two plays the role of first fundamental form (metric). The difference is that when spontaneous breaking of color symmetry takes place, the Goldstone modes of massless spin-two combine with all other spins and become the maximal-depth partially massless fields of the highest spin in the theory, forming a Regge trajectory.
A tensor description of perturbative Einsteinian gravity about an arbitrary background spacetime is developed. By analogy with the covariant laws of electromagnetism in spacetime, gravito-electromagnetic potentials and fields are defined to emulate electromagnetic gauge transformations under substitutions belonging to the gauge symmetry group of perturbative gravitation. These definitions have the advantage that on a flat background, with the aid of a covariantly constant timelike vector field, a subset of the linearised gravitational field equations can be written in a form that is fully anal…
The space-time curvature carried by electromagnetic fields is discovered and a new unification of geometry and electromagnetism is found. Curvature is invariant under charge reversal symmetry. Electromagnetic field equations are examined with De Rham co homology theory. Radiative electromagnetic fields must be exact and co exact to preclude unobserved massless topological charges. Weyl's conformal tensor, here called ``the gravitational field'', is decomposed into a divergence-free non-local piece with support everywhere and a local piece with the same support as the matter. By tuning a local …
Recently much controversy has been shed on BICEP 2 experiments for the concerning this validity or not and a possible set of new experiments to detect primordial inflation and gravitational waves. Since gravitational waves imply the existence of primordial magnetic fields in this context, C Bonvin, R Durrer and R Marteens [Phys Rev Lett (2014)] have tried to associate the presence of primordial magnetic fields to BICEP 2 by making use of CMB tensor modes. Here we show that by considering torsion dilatonic lagrangean one obtains cosmological magnetic fields of the order of $B\sim{10^{-10}G}$ wh…
We show that it is possible to formulate the classical Einstein-Maxwell-Dirac theory of spinors interacting with the gravitational and electromagnetic fields as the Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama theory with the Ricci scalar of the traceless torsion, describing gravity, and the torsion trace acting as the electromagnetic potential.
The Ferraris-Kijowski purely affine Lagrangian for the electromagnetic field, that has the form of the Maxwell Lagrangian with the metric tensor replaced by the symmetrized Ricci tensor, is dynamically equivalent to the metric Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian, except the zero-field limit, for which the metric tensor is not well-defined. This feature indicates that, for the Ferraris-Kijowski model to be physical, there must exist a background field that depends on the Ricci tensor. The simplest possibility, supported by recent astronomical observations, is the cosmological constant, generated in the…
In the light of intriguing results of C.C.Barros, we investigate in this thesis the possibilities of geometrical interpretation of all the fundamental interactions in order to unify them. More exactly we try to supply a unified geometrical description for gravitation and electromagnetism. The analysis of Huei's standard approach of Linear Gravity, in which the Einstein equations can be written in the same form of the Maxwell ones, revealed the existence of some imperfections. In fact, the relation between the scalar potential and the electric-type field is not valid except in the harmonic gaug…
