We construct the most general effective Lagrangian coupling gravity and electromagnetism up to mass dimension 6 by enumerating all possible non-minimal coupling terms respecting both diffeomorphism and gauge invariance. In all, there are only two unique terms after field re-definitions; one is known to arise from loop effects in QED while the other is a parity violating term which may be generated by weak interactions within the standard model of particle physics. We show that neither the cosmological propagation of light nor, contrary to earlier claims, solar system tests of General Relativity are useful probes of these terms. These non-minimal couplings of gravity and electromagnetism may remain a mystery for the foreseeable future.
Following earlier works of Dereli and collaborators, we study a three dimensional toy model where we extend the topologically massive gravity with electrodynamics by the most general $RF^2$-type non-minimal coupling terms. Here $R$ denotes the possible curvature terms and $F$ denotes the electromagnetic 2-form. We derive the variational field equations and look for exact solutions on constant negative curvature space-times with a constant, self-dual electromagnetic field. The notion of self-dual electromagnetic fields in three dimensions is introduced by Dereli and collaborators in the study o…
We investigate $ Y(R) F^2 $-type coupling of electromagnetic fields to gravity. After we derive field equations by a first order variational principle from the Lagrangian formulation of the non-minimally coupled theory, we look for static, spherically symmetric, magnetic monopole solutions. We point out that the solutions can provide possible geometries which may explain the flatness of the observed rotation curves of galaxies.
The lensing at large deflection angles caused by a Schwarzschild black hole for the case of a nonminimal coupling between gravitation and electromagnetism is examined. We show that photons follow an effective geometry, which displays an effective photon sphere. For the case in which the source, lens and observer are aligned, so that relativistic Einstein rings are formed, the dependence of the angular separation $δθ$ between the first and second ring with the relevant coupling parameter is calculated. We argue that such a separation, which may be measured by telescopes that will be operative i…
In this paper we investigate the gravitational vacuum stars which called gravastars in the non-minimally coupled models with electromagnetic and gravitational fields. We consider two non-minimal models and find the corresponding spherically symmetric exact solutions in the interior of the star consisting of the dark energy condensate. Our models turn out to be Einstein-Maxwell model at the outside of the star and the solutions become the Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m solution. The physical quantities of these models are continuous and non-singular in some range of parameters and the exterior geometry c…
We introduce the quasi-topological electromagnetism which is defined to be the squared norm of the topological 4-form $F\wedge F$. A salient property is that its energy-momentum tensor is of the isotropic perfect fluid with the pressure being precisely the opposite to its energy density. It can thus provide a model for dark energy. We study its application in both black hole physics and cosmology. The quasi-topological term has no effect on the purely electric or magnetic Reissner-Nordström black holes, the dyonic solution is however completely modified. We find that the dyonic black holes can…
The coupled Einstein-Dirac-Maxwell equations are considered for a static, spherically symmetric system of two fermions in a singlet spinor state. Stable soliton-like solutions are shown to exist, and we discuss the regularizing effect of gravity from a Feynman diagram point of view.
We study a Born-Infeld inspired model of gravity and electromagnetism in which both types of fields are treated on an equal footing via a determinantal approach in a metric-affine formulation. Though this formulation is a priori in conflict with the postulates of metric theories of gravity, we find that the resulting equations can also be obtained from an action combining the Einstein-Hilbert action with a minimally coupled nonlinear electrodynamics. As an example, the dynamics is solved for the charged static black hole.
In general relativity, Maxwell's equations are embedded in curved spacetime through the minimal prescription, but this could change if strong-gravity modifications are present. We show that with a nonminimal coupling between gravity and a massless vector field, nonperturbative effects can arise in compact stars. We find solutions describing stars with nontrivial vector field configurations, some of which are associated to an instability, while others are not. The vector field can be interpreted either as the electromagnetic field, or as a hidden vector field weakly coupled with the standard mo…
We extend the correspondence between metric-affine Ricci-Based Gravity theories and General Relativity (GR) to the case in which the matter sector is represented by linear and nonlinear electromagnetic fields. This complements previous studies focused on fluids and scalar fields. We establish the general algorithm that relates the matter fields in the GR and RBG frames and consider some applications. In particular, we find that the so-called Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity theory coupled to Maxwell electromagnetism is in direct correspondence with GR coupled to Born-Infeld electromagnet…
We present a framework in which the projective symmetry of the Einstein-Hilbert action in metric-affine gravity is used to induce an effective coupling between the Dirac lagrangian and the Maxwell field. The effective $U(1)$ gauge potential arises as the trace of the non-metricity tensor $Q_{μa}{}^a$ and couples in the appropriate way to the Dirac fields to in order to allow for local phase shifts. On shell, the obtained theory is equivalent to Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell theory in presence of Dirac spinors.
A new derivation of surface charges for 3+1 gravity coupled to Electromagnetism is obtained. Gravity theory is written in the tetrad-connection variables. The general derivation starts from the Lagrangian and uses the covariant symplectic formalism in the language of forms. For gauge theories surface charges disentangle physical from gauge symmetries through the use of Noether identities and the exactness symmetry condition. The surface charges are quasilocal, explicitly coordinate independent, gauge invariant, and background independent. For a black hole family solution the surface charge con…
We first review the cosmological constant problem, and then mention a conjecture of Feynman according to which the general relativistic theory of gravity should be reformulated in such a way that energy does not couple to gravity. We point out that our recent unification of gravitation and electromagnetism through a symmetric tensor has the property that the free electromagnetic energy and the vacuum energy do not contribute explicitly to the curvature of spacetime just like the free gravitational energy. Therefore in this formulation of general relativity, the vacuum energy density has its ve…
The Eddington Lagrangian in the purely affine formulation of general relativity generates the Einstein equations with the cosmological constant. The Ferraris-Kijowski purely affine Lagrangian for the electromagnetic field, which has the form of the Maxwell Lagrangian with the metric tensor replaced by the symmetrized Ricci tensor, is dynamically equivalent to the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian in the metric formulation. We show that the sum of the two affine Lagrangians is dynamically inequivalent to the sum of the analogous Lagrangians in the metric-affine/metric formulation. We also show that s…
Using the weak field approximation, we can express the theory of general relativity in a Maxwell-type structure comparable to electromagnetism. We find that every electromagnetic field is coupled to a gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic field. Acknowledging the fact that both fields originate from the same source, the particle, we can express the magnetic and electric field through their gravitational respective analogues using the proportionality coefficient k. This coefficient depends on the ratio of mass and charge and the ratio between the electromagnetic and gravitic-gravitomagnetic permi…

The unification of quantum field theory and general relativity is a fundamental goal of modern physics. In many cases, theoretical efforts to achieve this goal introduce auxiliary gravitational fields, ones in addition to the familiar symmetric second-rank tensor potential of general relativity, and lead to nonmetric theories because of direct couplings between these auxiliary fields and matter. Here, we consider an example of a metric-affine gauge theory of gravity in which torsion couples nonminimally to the electromagnetic field. This coupling causes a phase difference to accumulate between…
It is shown here that symmetric hyperbolicity, which guarantees well-posedness, leads to a set of two inequalities for matrices whose elements are determined by a given theory. As a part of the calculation, carried out in a mostly-covariant formalism, the general form for the symmetrizer, valid for a general Lagrangian theory, was obtained. When applied to nonlinear electromagnetism linearly coupled to curvature, the inequalities lead to strong constraints on the relevant quantities, which were illustrated with applications to particular cases. The examples show that non-linearity leads to con…
In this paper we first show that any coupled system consisting of a gravitational plus a free electromagnetic field can be described geometrically in the sense that both Maxwell equations and Einstein equation having as source term the energy-momentum of the electromagnetic field can be derived from a geometrical Lagrangian proportional to the scalar curvature R of a particular kind of Riemann-Cartan spacetime structure, where those fields are identified as geometrical objects of the structure. We show moreover that the contorsion tensor of the particular Riemann-Cartan spacetime structure of …
In (3 + 1) spacetime dimensions the Rainich conditions are a set of equations expressed solely in terms of the metric tensor which are equivalent to the Einstein-Maxwell equations for non-null electromagnetic fields. Here we provide the analogous conditions for (2 + 1)-dimensional gravity coupled to electromagnetism. Both the non-null and null cases are treated. The construction of these conditions is based upon reducing the problem to that of gravity coupled to a scalar field, which we have treated elsewhere. These conditions can be easily extended to other theories of (2 + 1)-dimensional gra…
Extremely weak new forces could lead to apparent violations of the Equivalence Principle. The MICROSCOPE experiment implies that the relative strength of a new long-range force, compared with gravity, is constrained to $|\barα_g|<3.2\ 10^{-11},2.3\ 10^{-13},2.2\ 10^{-13},6.7\ 10^{-13}$ and $1.5\ 10^{-12}$ at $2σ$, for a coupling to $B,\ L,\ B-L,\ B+L$ or $3B+L$; or, for a coupling to isospin, $|α_g|<8.4\ 10^{-12}$. This is a gain in sensitivity $\simeq 3$ for a coupling to $B$, to $\approx$ 15 in the other cases, including $B-L$ as suggested by grand unification. This requires paying attention…
We discuss new exact solutions of a three-parameter nonminimal Einstein-Maxwell model. The solutions describe static spherically symmetric objects with and without center, supported by an electric field nonminimally coupled to gravity. We focus on a unique one-parameter model, which admits an exact solution for a traversable electrically charged wormhole connecting two universes, one asymptotically flat the other asymptotically de Sitter ones. The relation between the asymptotic mass and charge of the wormhole and its throat radius is analyzed. The wormhole solution found is thus a nonminimal …
Huge electromagnetic fields are known to be present during the late stages of the dynamics of supernovae. Thus, when dealing with electrodynamics in this context, the possibility may arise to probe nonlinear theories (generalizations of the Maxwellian electromagnetism). We firstly solve Einstein field equations minimally coupled to an arbitrary (current-free) nonlinear Lagrangian of electrodynamics (NLED) in the slow rotation regime $a\ll M$ (black hole's mass), up to first order in $a/M$. We then make use of the robust and self-contained Born-Infeld Lagrangian in order to compare and contrast…
