In this article we present an intrinsec construction of foliated Brownian motion via stochastic calculus adapted to foliation. The stochastic approach together with a proposed foliated vector calculus provide a natural method to work on harmonic measures. Other results include a decomposition of the Laplacian in terms of the foliated and basic Laplacians, a characterization of totally invariant measures and a differential equation for the density of harmonic measures.
We study the transversally harmonic maps between foliated Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we prove that under some curvature conditions, any transversally harmonic map is transversally totally geodesic.
On a compact foliated Riemannian manifold with some transversal curvature conditions, there are no nontrivial basic harmonic forms (M. Min-Oo et al., J. Reine Angew. Math. 415 (1991). In this paper, we extend the above facts to a complete foliated Riemannian manifold.
We study primary and secondary invariants of leafwise Dirac operators on foliated bundles. Given such an operator, we begin by considering the associated regular self-adjoint operator $D_m$ on the maximal Connes-Skandalis Hilbert module and explain how the functional calculus of $D_m$ encodes both the leafwise calculus and the monodromy calculus in the corresponding von Neumann algebras. When the foliation is endowed with a holonomy invariant transverse measure, we explain the compatibility of various traces and determinants. We extend Atiyah's index theorem on Galois coverings to these foliat…
We study harmonic and totally invariant measures in a foliated compact Riemannian manifold isometrically embedded in an Euclidean space. We introduce geometrical techniques for stochastic calculus in this space. In particular, using these techniques we can construct explicitely an Stratonovich equation for the foliated Brownian motion (cf. L. Garnett \cite{LG} and others). We present a characterization of totally invariant measures in terms of the flow of diffeomorphisms of associated to this equation. We prove an ergodic formula for the sum of the Lyapunov exponents in terms of the geometry o…
Let X be a smooth compact manifold with boundary. For smooth foliations on the boundary of X admitting a `resolution' in terms of a fibration, we construct a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the fibred cusp calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. In particular, we introduce certain symbols leading to a simple description of the Fredholm operators inside the calculus. When the leaves of the fibration `resolving' the foliation are compact, we also obtain an index formula for Fredholm perturbations of Dirac-type operators. Along the way, we obtain a formula for the adiabatic limit of the eta inva…
We study here the action of subgroups of PSL(2,R) on the space of harmonic functions on the unit disc bounded by a common constant, as well as the relationship this action has with the foliated Liouville problem: Given a foliation of a compact manifold by Riemannian leaves and a leafwise harmonic continuous function on the manifold, is the function leafwise constant? We give a number of positive results and also show a general class of examples for which the Liouville property does not hold. The connection between the Liouville property and the dynamics on the space of harmonic functions as we…
We consider the family of harmonic measures on a lamination $\mathcal{L}$ of a compact space $X$ by locally symmetric spaces $L$ of noncompact type, i.e. $L\simeq Γ_L\backslash G/K$. We establish a natural bijection between these measures and the measures on an associated lamination foliated by $G$-orbits, $\hat{\mathcal{L}}$ which are right invariant under a minimal parabolic (Borel) subgroup $B < G$. In the special case when $G$ is split, these measures correspond to the measures that are invariant under both the Weyl chamber flow and the stable horospherical flows on a certain bundle over t…
The mixed scalar curvature of a foliated Riemannian manifold, i.e., an averaged mixed sectional curvature, has been considered by several geometers. We explore the Yamabe type problem: to prescribe the constant mixed scalar curvature for a foliation by a conformal change of the metric in normal directions only. For a harmonic foliation, we derive the leafwise elliptic equation and explore the corresponding nonlinear heat type equation. We assume that the leaves are compact submanifolds and the manifold is fibered instead of being foliated, and use spectral parameters of certain Schrödinger ope…
In this paper, we study $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')_{p}$-harmonic maps between foliated Riemannian manifolds $(M,g,\mathcal F)$ and $(M',g',\mathcal F')$. A $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')_{p}$-harmonic map $ϕ:(M,g,\mathcal F)\to (M', g',\mathcal F')$ is a critical point of the transversal $p$-energy functional $E_{B,p}$. Trivially, $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')_2$-harmonic map is $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')$-harmonic map, which is a critical point of $E_B$. There is another definition of a harmonic map on foliated Riemannian manifolds, called transversally harmonic map, which is a solution of the Euler-Lar…
In this paper, we investigate critical maps of the horizontal energy functional $E_{H,\widetilde{H}}(f)$ for maps between two pseudo-Hermitian manifolds $(M^{2m+1},H(M),J,θ)$ and $(N^{2n+1},\widetilde{H}(N), \widetilde{J},\widetildeθ)$. These critical maps are referred to as $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We derive a CR Bochner formula for the horizontal energy density $|df_{H, \widetilde{H}}|^{2}$, and introduce a Paneitz type operator acting on maps to refine the Bochner formula. As a result, we are able to establish some Bochner type theorems for $(H,\widetilde{H})$-harmonic maps. We al…
In this short survey article, we showcase a number of non-trivial geometric problems that have recently been resolved by marrying methods from functional calculus and real-variable harmonic analysis. We give a brief description of these methods as well as their interplay. This is a succinct survey that hopes to inspire geometers and analysts alike to study these methods so that they can be further developed to be potentially applied to a broader range of questions.
The paper studies the harmonic maps on a direction between a Riemannian space and a generalized Lagrange space. Also, it is proved there that the solutions of C^2 class of certain ODEs or PDEs are harmonic maps, in the sense of this paper.
In this paper, we study the relation between geodesic and harmonic mappings. Harmonic mappings are defined between Riemannian manifolds as critical points of the energy functional, on the other hand, geodesic mappings are defined in a more general setting (manifolds with affine connections). Using the well-established formalism of calculus of variations on fibred manifolds we solve the weak inverse problem for the equation of geodesic mappings and get a variational equation which is a consequence of the geodesic mappings equation. For the connection on the target manifold we get the expected r…
The paper focuses on various properties and applications of the homotopy operator, which occurs in the Poincaré lemma. In the first part, an abstract operator calculus is constructed, where the exterior derivative is an abstract derivative and the homotopy operator plays the role of an abstract integral. This operator calculus can be used to formulate abstract differential equations. An example of the eigenvalue problem that resembles the fermionic quantum harmonic oscillator is presented. The second part presents the dual complex to the Dolbeault bicomplex generated by the homotopy operator o…
We study the relation between the Laplacian associated to an odd metric on a supermanifold and harmonic superfunctions, through the application of the calculus of variations to a supersymmetric sigma model.
We identify the Variational Principle governing inifinity-Harmonic maps, that is solutions to the Infinity-Laplacian. The system was first derived in the limit of the p-Laplacian as p->inifinity in [K2] and is recently studied in [K3]. Here we show that it is the "Euler-Lagrange PDE" of vector-valued Calculus of Variations in L-inifinity for the L-inifinity norm of the gradient. We introduce the notion of inifinity-Minimal Maps, whch are Rank-One Absolute Minimals of with inifinity-Minimal Area" of the range submanifold and prove they solve the inifinity-laplacian. The converse is true for imm…
