Ab initio wave-function-based methods are employed for the study of quasiparticle energy bands of zinc-blende ZnS, with focus on the Zn 3d "semicore" states. The relative energies of these states with respect to the top of the S 3p valence bands appear to be poorly described as compared to experimental values not only within the local density approximation (LDA), but also when many-body corrections within the GW approximation are applied to the LDA or LDA+U mean-field solutions [T. Miyake, P. Zhang, M. L. Cohen, and S. G. Louie, Phys. Rev. B 74, 245213 (2006)]. In the present study, we show that for the accurate description of the Zn 3d states a correlation treatment based on wave function methods is needed. Our study rests on a local Hamiltonian approach which rigorously describes the short-range polarization and charge redistribution effects around an extra hole or electron placed into the valence respective conduction bands of semiconductors and insulators. The method also facilitates the computation of electron correlation effects beyond relaxation and polarization. The electron correlation treatment is performed on finite clusters cut off the infinite system. The formalism makes use of localized Wannier functions and embedding potentials derived explicitly from prior periodic Hartree-Fock calculations. The on-site and nearest-neighbor charge relaxation lead to corrections of several eV to the Hartree-Fock band energies and gap. Corrections due to long-range polarization are of the order of 1.0 eV. The dispersion of the Hartree-Fock bands is only little affected by electron correlations. We find the Zn 3d "semicore" states to lie about 9.0 eV below the top of the S 3p valence bands, in very good agreement with values from valence-band x-ray photoemission.
We derive and implement symmetry-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations and apply them to the molecular electronic structure problem. All symmetries (particle number, spin, spatial, and complex conjugation) are deliberately broken and restored in a self-consistent variation-after-projection approach. We show that the resulting method yields a comprehensive black-box treatment of strong correlations with effective one-electron (mean-field) computational cost. The ensuing wave function is of multireference character and permeates the entire Hilbert space of the problem. The energy exp…
We show that the Mott insulating state of the half-filled paramagnetic Hubbard model in infinite dimensions contains electronic quasiparticles with very small quasiparticle weight at the inner edge of the Hubbard bands. We use a stochastic and non-perturbative quantum impurity solver based on calculating the impurity self energy as a sample average over a representative distribution of impurity models solved by exact diagonalization. Due to the natural parallelization of the method, millions of poles are readily generated for the self energy which allows to work with very small pole-broadening…

We show that the results of photoemission and inverse photoemission experiments on bulk copper can be quantitatively described within band-structure theory, with no evidence of effects beyond the single-quasiparticle approximation. The well known discrepancies between the experimental bandstructure and the Kohn-Sham eigenvalues of Density Functional Theory are almost completely corrected by self-energy effects. Exchange-correlation contributions to the self-energy arising from 3s and 3p core levels are shown to be crucial.
We highlight the properties of a simple model (contained in our recent work) of the quantum dynamics of a single point vortex interacting with the nodal fermionic quasiparticles of a d-wave superconductor. We describe the renormalization of the vortex motion by the quasiparticles: at T=0, the quasiparticles renormalize the vortex mass and introduce only a weak sub-Ohmic damping. Ohmic (or `Bardeen-Stephen' damping) appears at T>0, with the damping co-efficient vanishing ~ T^2 with a universal prefactor. Conversely, quantum fluctuations of the vortex renormalize the quasiparticle spectrum. A po…
The self-consistent theory of the correlation effects in Highly Correlated Systems(HCS) is presented. The novel Irreducible Green's Functions(IGF) method is discused in detail for the Hubbard model and random Hubbard model. The interpolative solution for the quasiparticle spectrum, which is valid for both the atomic and band limit is obtained. The (IGF) method permits to calculate the quasiparticle spectra of many-particle systems with the complicated spectra and strong interaction in a very natural and compact way. The inelastic scattering corrections leads to the damping of the quasiparticle…
A microscopic theory is presented for the observed electronic disorder in superconducting Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The essential phenomenology is shown to be consistent with the existence of two types of interstitial oxygen dopants: those serving primarily as charge reserviors and those close to the apical plane contributing both carriers and electrostatic potential to the CuO$_2$ plane. The nonlinear screening of the latter produces nanoscale variations in the doped hole concentration, leading to electronic inhomogeneity. Based on an unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation of the extended…
We report high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies of epitaxial thin films of the correlated 4d transition metal oxide ferromagnet SrRuO3. The Fermi surface in the ferromagnetic state consists of well-defined Landau quasiparticles, exhibiting strong coupling to low-energy bosonic modes which contributes to the large effective masses observed by transport and thermodynamic measurements. Upon warming the material through its Curie temperature, we observe a substantial decrease in quasiparticle coherence, but negligible changes in the ferromagnetic exchange splitting, suggesting that …
The electronic properties of quasi-one-dimensional anatase TiO2 nanostructures, in the form of thin nanowires having (101) and (001) facets, have been systematically investigated using the standard, hybrid density functional and quasiparticle calculations. Their visible photoabsorption characteristics have also been studied at these levels of theories. The thin stoichiometric nanowire models are predicted to have larger band gaps relative to their bulk values. The band gap related features appear to be better described with the screened Coulomb hybrid density functional method compared to the …
The intriguing idea that strongly interacting electrons can generate spatially inhomogeneous electronic liquid crystalline phases is over a decade old, but these systems still represent an unexplored frontier of condensed matter physics. One reason is that visualization of the many-body quantum states generated by the strong interactions, and of the resulting electronic phases, has not been achieved. Soft condensed matter physics was transformed by microscopies that allowed imaging of real-space structures and patterns. A candidate technique for obtaining equivalent data in the purely electron…
We study a recently proposed quantum dimer model for the pseudogap metal state of the cuprates. The model contains bosonic dimers, representing a spin-singlet valence bond between a pair of electrons, and fermionic dimers, representing a quasiparticle with spin-$1/2$ and charge $+e$. By density matrix renormalization group calculations on a long but finite cylinder, we obtain the ground-state density distribution of the fermionic dimers for a number of different total densities. From the Friedel oscillations at open boundaries, we deduce that the Fermi surface consists of small hole pockets ne…
This article is devoted to a discussion of stripe and electron-nematic order and their connection to electronic properties in the pseudogap regime of copper-oxide superconductors. We review basic properties of these symmetry-breaking ordering phenomena as well as proposals which connect them to quantum-oscillation measurements. Experimental data indicate that these orders are unlikely to be the cause of the pseudogap phenomenon, implying that they occur on top of the pseudogap state which itself is of different origin. Specifically, we discuss the idea that the non-superconducting pseudogap gr…
Despite decades of progress, an understanding of unconventional superconductivity still remains elusive. An important open question is about the material dependence of the superconducting properties. Using the quasiparticle self-consistent GW method, we re-examine the electronic structure of copper oxide high-Tc materials. We show that QSGW captures several important features, distinctive from the conventional LDA results. The energy level splitting between dx2-y2 and d3z2-r2 is significantly enlarged and the van Hove singularity point is lowered. The calculated results compare better than LDA…
Within the framework of the kinetic energy driven superconductivity, we study the electronic structure of cuprate superconductors. It is shown that the spectral weight of the electron spectrum in the antinodal point of the Brillouin zone decreases as the temperature is increased. With increasing the doping concentration, this spectral weigh increases, while the position of the sharp superconducting quasiparticle peak moves to the Fermi energy. In analogy to the normal-state case, the superconducting quasiparticles around the antinodal point disperse very weakly with momentum. Our results also …
We have prepared high-quality epitaxial thin films of CaRuO$_3$ with residual resistivity ratios up to 55. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the magnetoresistance and a $T^2$ temperature dependence in the electrical resistivity only below 1.5 K, whose coefficient is substantially suppressed in large magnetic fields, establish CaRuO$_3$ as a Fermi liquid (FL) with anomalously low coherence scale. Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) $T^{3/2}$ dependence is found between 2 and 25 K. The high sample quality allows access to the intrinsic electronic properties via THz spectroscopy. For frequencies below 0.6 THz…
Quasiparticle interference (QPI) provides a wealth of information relating to the electronic structure of a material. However, it is often assumed that this information is constrained to two-dimensional electronic states. Here, we show that this is not necessarily the case. For FeSe, a system dominated by surface defects, we show that it is actually all electronic states with negligible group velocity in the $z$ axis that are contained within the experimental data. By using a three-dimensional tight binding model of FeSe, fit to photoemission measurements, we directly reproduce the experimenta…
Electrons navigate more easily in a background of ordered magnetic moments than around randomly oriented ones. This fundamental quantum mechanical principle is due to their Bloch wave nature and also underlies ballistic electronic motion in a perfect crystal. As a result, a paramagnetic metal that develops ferromagnetic order often experiences a sharp drop in the resistivity. Despite the universality of this phenomenon, a direct observation of the impact of ferromagnetic order on the electronic quasiparticles in a magnetic metal is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that quasiparticles experie…
We report on the importance of GW self-energy corrections for the electronic structure of light actinides in the weak-to-intermediate coupling regime. Our study is based on calculations of the band structure and total density of states of Np, U, and Pu using a one-shot GW approximation that includes spin-orbit coupling within a full potential LAPW framework. We also present RPA screened effective Coulomb interactions for the f-electron orbitals for different lattice constants, and show that there is an increased contribution from electron-electron correlation in these systems for expanded latt…
After years of research into colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) manganites using bulk techniques, there has been a recent upsurge in experiments directly probing the electronic states at or near the surface of the bilayer CMR materials La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ using angle-resolved photoemission or scanning probe microscopy. Here we report new, temperature dependent, angle resolved photoemission data from single crystals with a doping level of $x=0.36$. The first important result is that there is no sign of a pseudogap in the charge channel of this material for temperatures below the Curi…
We propose an explanation for the electronic nematic state observed recently in parent iron-based superconductors [T.-M. Chuang et al., Science 327, 181 (2010)]. We argue that the quasi-one-dimensional nanostructure identified in the quasiparticle interference (QPI) is a consequence of the interplay of the magnetic ($π$, 0) spin-density wave (SDW) order with the underlying electronic structure. We show that the evolution of the QPI peaks largely reflects quasiparticle scattering between electronic bands involved in the SDW formation. Because of the ellipticity of the electron pocket and the fa…
We show that a small number of intentionally introduced defects can be used as a spectroscopic tool to amplify quasiparticle interference in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$, that we measure by scanning tunneling spectroscopic imaging. We show from the momentum and energy dependence of the quasiparticle interference that Fermi surface nesting is inconsequential to charge density wave formation in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$. We demonstrate that by combining quasiparticle interference data with additional knowledge of the quasiparticle band structure from angle resolved photoemission measurements, one can extract the wavevecto…
We report on a quantitative investigation of the spin-dependent quasiparticle lifetimes and electron correlation effects in ferromagnetic hcp Co(0001) by means of spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental spectra are compared in detail to state-of-the-art many-body calculations within the dynamical mean field theory and the three-body scattering approximation, including a full calculation of the one-step photoemission process. From this comparison we conclude that although strong local many-body Coulomb interactions are of major importance for the qualitative descrip…
To understand the halfmetallic ferromagnet EuB6 we use the Kondo lattice model for valence and conduction band. By means of a recently developed many-body theory we calculate the electronic properties in the ferromagnetic regime up to the Curie temperature. The decreasing magnetic order induces a transition from halfmetallic to semiconducting behavior along with a band broadening. We show the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle density of states and the quasiparticle dispersion as well as the effective mass, the number of carriers and the plasma frequency which are in good agreement wi…
We report detailed Fermi surface topology and quasiparticle dynamics of the host cobaltate Na0.7CoO2. A direct mapping of the Fermi surface is carried out by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Fermi surface at temperature 16K is a hole-pocket centered around the Gamma-point. The highly correlated nature of the electron liquid is evidenced from strong on-site Coulomb interaction seen through a valence satellite and via renormalization of the quasiparticle dispersion. The quasiparticle exhibits spectral coherence only below 150K which includes the non-Fermi liquid regime.
We study correlation effects and temperature dependencies in the electronic structure of thin ferromagnetic local-moment films. In a first step the Kondo-lattice model is investigated as a candidate for a proper representation of local-moment ferromagnets. Magnetic and electronic key-quantities as the Curie-temperature and the quasiparticle density of states are derived with previously tested many-body procedures. It is shown that the magnetic properties can be interpreted exclusively in terms of the temperature-dependent electronic quasiparticle structure. An extended RKKY theory leads to eff…
There are several ways to turn a superconductor into a normal conductor: increase the temperature, apply a high magnetic field, or run a large current. High-T$_c$ cuprate superconductors are unusual in the sense that experiments suggest that destroying superconductivity by heating the sample to temperatures above T$_c$ or by applying a high magnetic field result in different 'normal' states. Spectroscopic probes show that above T$_c$, in the pseudogap regime, the Fermi surface is partly gapped and there are no well-defined quasiparticles. Transport measurements, on the contrary, reveal quantum…
Dirac line node (DLN) materials are topological semimetals wherein a set of symmetry protected crossing points forms a one-dimensional (1D) line in reciprocal space. Not only are the linearly dispersing bands expected to give rise to exceptional electronic properties, but the weak screening of the Coulomb interaction near the line node may enhance electronic correlations, produce new many-body ground states, or influence the quasiparticle lifetime. We investigate the quasiparticle dynamics in the DLN material ZrSiS via spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy (SI-STM). By studying t…
A combination of the density functional theory and the single-site dynamical mean-field theory is employed to study the electronic structures of various allotropes of elemental curium (Cm-I, Cm-II, and Cm-III). We find that the 5$f$ valence electrons in the high-symmetry Cm-I and Cm-II phases remain localized, while they turn into itinerancy in the low-symmetry monoclinic Cm-III phase. In addition, conspicuous quasiparticle multiplets are identified in the 5$f$ electronic density of states of the Cm-III phase. We believe that it is the many-body transition between $5f^{7}$ and $5f^{8}$ configu…
Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) measures the scattering of conduction electrons from impurities and defects, giving information about the electronic structure of both the host material and adsorbed impurities. We interpret such FT-STS measurements in terms of the quasiparticle interference (QPI), investigating the QPI due to magnetic impurities adsorbed on a range of representative non-magnetic host surfaces, and contrasting with the case of a simple scalar impurity or point defect. We demonstrate how the electronic correlations present for magnetic impurities marked…
In nodal-line semimetals linearly dispersing states form Dirac loops in the reciprocal space, with high degree of electron-hole symmetry and almost-vanishing density of states near the Fermi level. The result is reduced electronic screening and enhanced correlations between Dirac quasiparticles. Here we investigate the electronic structure of ZrSiSe, by combining time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with ab initio density functional theory (DFT) complemented by an extended Hubbard model (DFT +U +V). We show that electronic correlations are reduced on an ultrashort timescale by o…
We present results for the electronic structure of plutonium by using a recently developed quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ method (\qsgw). We consider a paramagnetic solution without spin-orbit interaction as a function of volume for the face-centered cubic (fcc) unit cell. We span unit-cell volumes ranging from 10% greater than the equilibrium volume of the $δ$ phase to 90 % of the equivalent for the $α$ phase of Pu. The self-consistent $GW$ quasiparticle energies are compared to those obtained within the Local Density Approximation (LDA). The goal of the calculations is to understand syst…
A novel approach to investigation of correlation effects in the electronic structure of magnetic crystals which takes into account a frequency dependence of the self energy (so called ``LDA++ approach'') is developed. The fluctuation exchange approximation is generalized to the spin-polarized multi-band case and its local version is proposed. As an example, we calculate the electronic quasiparticle spectrum of ferromagnetic iron. It is shown that the Fermi liquid description of the bands near the Fermi level is reasonable, while the quasiparticle states beyond approximately 1 eV range are stro…
The importance of electronic correlation effects in the layered perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is evidenced. To this end we use state-of-the-art LDA+DMFT (Local Density Approximation + Dynamical Mean-Field Theory) in the basis of Wannier functions to compute spectral functions and the quasiparticle dispersion of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The spectra are found to be in good agreement with various spectroscopic experiments. We also calculate the $\textbf{k}$-dependence of the quasiparticle bands and compare the results with new angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data. Two typical manifestations of strong Coulo…
We have measured the thermal conductivity of the iron pnictide superconductor LaFePO down to temperatures as low as T=60mK and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. The data shows a large residual contribution that is linear in temperature, consistent with the presence of low energy electronic quasiparticles. We interpret the magnitude of the linear term, as well as the field and temperature dependence of thermal transport in several pairing scenarios. The presence of an unusual supralinear temperature dependence of the electronic thermal conductivity in zero magnetic field, and a high scattering rate…
We studied the oxygen vacancies($V_{O}$) in rutile TiO2 by using $G_0W_0$ approximation on top of GGA+$U$ as a method of choice to improve the gap. Since there is no extensive agreement regarding the characteristic of electron localization for $ TiO_2$, we examine combined $G_0W_0$@GGA+$U$ scheme in which both are conceptually one step toward better enumeration of the non locality of exchange-correlation potential . Our $G_0W_0$@GGA+$U$ results realize and confirm the weak nature of electron correlation in rutile $TiO_2$ and shows that the $U$-dependence of the energy gap in perfect bulk is sl…
We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure and magnetic properties of thin ferromagnetic EuO films. The treatment is based on a combination of a multiband-Kondo lattice model with first-principles TB-LMTO band structure calculations. The method avoids the problem of double-counting of relevant interactions and takes into account the correct symmetry of the atomic orbitals. We discuss the temperature-dependent electronic structures of EuO(100) films in terms of quasiparticle densities of states and quasiparticle band structures. The Curie temperature T_C of the E…
A flattened electronic band is one of several possible routes for increasing the strength of the pairing interactions in a superconductor. With this in mind, we show here that thermodynamic measurements of the high-Tc cuprates reveal an appreciably stronger electron correlation-driven flattening of the quasiparticle bands than has previously been indicated. Specifically, we find that thermodynamic measurements indicate an electronic entropy in excess of that that can be accounted for by the value of the universal Fermi velocity inferred from photoemission experiments. The observed band flatten…
Femtosecond relaxation of photo-excited quasiparticles in the one dimensional Mott insulator ET-F2TCNQ are measured as a function of external pressure, which is used to tune the electronic structure. By fitting the static optical properties and measuring femtosecond decay times at each pressure value, we correlate the relaxation rates with the electronic bandwidth t and on the intersite correlation energy V. The scaling of relaxation times with microscopic parameters is different than for metals and semiconductors. The competition between localization and delocalization of the Mott-Hubbard exc…
SmB6 is one of the candidate compounds for topological Kondo insulators, a class of materials which combines a non-trivial topological band structure with strong electronic correlations. Here we employ a multiband tight-binding description, supplemented by a slave-particle approach to account for strong interactions, to theoretically study the surface-state signatures in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and quasiparticle interference (QPI). We discuss the spin structure of the three surface Dirac cones of SmB6 and provide concrete predictions for the energy and momentum dependence of the …
Effective models focused on pertinent low-energy degrees of freedom have substantially contributed to our qualitative understanding of quantum materials. An iconic example, the Kondo model, was key to demonstrating that the rich phase diagrams of correlated metals originate from the interplay of localized and itinerant electrons. Modern electronic structure calculations suggest that to achieve quantitative material-specific models, accurate consideration of the crystal field and spin-orbit interactions is imperative. This poses the question of how local high-energy degrees of freedom become in…
We present an exact treatment of layered many-body electronic systems in the presence of interlayer coupling within the Schwinger functional derivative approach on the Keldysh contour. Our transparent approach allows us to clarify the definition of interlayer coupling by showing the independent roles hybridization and interactions play in generating new electronic and magnetic excitations. We find interlayer coupling to induce a variety of plasmons, magnons, and excitons, residing within the a layer, traversing between layers, or propagating along the interface. Moreover, we predict interfacia…
We investigate the interplay of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electronic correlations in Sr2RuO4 using dynamical mean-field theory. We find that SOC does not affect the correlation-induced renormalizations, which validates the Hund's metal picture of ruthenates even in the presence of the sizable SOC relevant to these materials. Nonetheless, SOC found to change significantly the electronic structure at k-points where a degeneracy applies in its absence. We explain why these two observations are consistent with one another and calculate effects of SOC on the correlated electronic structure. The…
The magnetic behavior of thin ferromagnetic itinerant-electron films is investigated within the strongly correlated single-band Hubbard model. For its approximate solution we apply a generalization of the modified alloy analogy (MAA) to deal with the modifications due to the reduced translational symmetry. The theory is based on exact results in the limit of strong Coulomb interaction which are important for a reliable description of ferromagnetism. Within the MAA the actual type of the alloy analogy is determined selfconsistently. The MAA allows, in particular, the investigation of quasiparti…
We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS. A combination of a many-body evaluation of a multiband Kondo-lattice model and a first-principles T=0--bandstructure calculation (tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO)) is used to get realistic information about temperature- and correlation effects in the EuS energy spectrum. The combined method strictly avoids double-counting of any relevant interaction. Results for EuS are presented in terms of spectral densities, quasiparticle band structures and quasiparticle densi…

MnSi has been extensively studied for five decades, nonetheless detailed information on the Fermi surface (FS) symmetry is still lacking. This missed information prevented from a comprehensive understanding the nature of the magnetic interaction in this material. Here, by performing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on high-quality MnSi films epitaxially grown on Si(111), we unveil the FS symmetry and the evolution of the electronic structure across the paramagnetic-helimagnetic transition at T$_C$ $\sim$ 40 K, along with the appearance of sharp quasiparticle emission below T$_C$. The …
Within the framework of the kinetic energy driven d-wave superconductivity, the electronic structure of the electron doped cuprate superconductors is studied. It is shown that although there is an electron-hole asymmetry in the phase diagram, the electronic structure of the electron-doped cuprates in the superconducting-state is similar to that in the hole-doped case. With increasing the electron doping, the spectral weight in the $(π,0)$ point increases, while the position of the superconducting quasiparticle peak is shifted towards the Fermi energy. In analogy to the hole-doped case, the sup…
