The Feynman propagator used in the conventional in-out formalism in quantum field theory is not a causal propagator as wave packets are propagated virtually instantaneously outside the causal region of the initial state. We formulate a causal in-out formalism in quantum field theory by making use of the Wheeler propagator, the time ordered commutator propagator, which is manifestly causal. Only free scalar field theories and their first quantization are considered. We identify the real Klein Gordon field itself as the wave function of a neutral spinless relativistic particle. Furthermore, we derive a probability density for our relativistic wave packet using the inner product between states that live on a suitably defined Hilbert space of real quantum fields. We show that the time evolution of our probability density is governed by the Wheeler propagator, such that it behaves causally too.
The Feynman propagator for a free bosonic scalar field on the discrete spacetime of a causal set is presented. The formalism includes scalar field operators and a vacuum state which define a scalar quantum field theory on a causal set. This work can be viewed as a novel regularisation of quantum field theory based on a Lorentz invariant discretisation of spacetime.
We present three methods for calculating the Feynman propagator for the non-relativistic harmonic oscillator. The first method was employed by Schwinger a half a century ago, but has rarely been used in non-relativistic problems since. Also discussed is an algebraic method and a path integral method so that the reader can compare the advantages and disadvantages of each method.
We propose that the concept of multidimensional residues can be used to directly extracting the coefficients of scalar master integrals (with single propagators only) from one-loop Feynman integrals with generic power of propagators. Unlike the usual integration-by-parts (IBP) technique, where one has to solve iteratively a complicated set of equations to carry out the reduction and determine the coefficients of scalar master integrals, using multidimensional residues provides the possibility of directly extracting the coefficients of the master integrals. As the first application of this idea…
We construct the retarded Green function and the Hadamard function in the Lorentzian (d+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime for the Poincaré coordinate by performing the mode integration directly. We explore the structure of singularities for the position-space Feynman propagator derived from them. The boundary scaling limits of the bulk Feynman propagator yield the bulk-boundary propagator and the boundary conformal correlation function with an extra factor.
It is shown that the usual expression for a Feynman diagram in terms of the Feynman propagator $Δ_F(x-y)$ can be replaced by an equivalent expression involving the positive-energy on-shell propagator $Δ^+(x-y)$, supplemented by appropriate functions associated with time-ordering. When this alternate way of expressing a Feynman diagram is Fourier transformed into momentum space, the momentum associated with each function $Δ^+(x-y)$ is on-shell, and is only conserved at each vertex if an energy is attributed to the contributions of the time-ordering functions. The resulting expression is analogo…
A modification of the Fokker action is proposed, which allows one to formulate the covariant quantum theory of the charge system, in which the proper time of each particle serves as the evolution parameter and the particles themselves receive an additional quantum number - spin. The modification consists in adding to the Fokker action its variation generated by the infinitesimal shifts of the proper time parameters. As a result, the proper time parameters become observable at the quantum level.
We consider the two-loop massless propagator-type Feynman diagram with an arbitrary (non-integer) index on the central line. We analytically prove the equality of the two well-known results existing in the literature which express this diagram in terms of ${}_3F_2$-hypergeometric functions of argument $-1$ and $1$, respectively. We also derive new representations for this diagram which may be of importance in practical calculations.
We extend our new approach for numeric evaluation of Feynman diagrams to integrals that include fermionic and vector propagators. In this initial discussion we begin by deriving the Sinc function representation for the propagators of spin-1/2 and spin-1 fields and exploring their properties. We show that the attributes of the spin-0 propagator which allowed us to derive the Sinc function representation for scalar field Feynman integrals are shared by fields with non-zero spin. We then investigate the application of the Sinc function representation to simple QED diagrams, including first order …
We present a simplified and generalized derivation of the flavour-coherent propagators and Feynman rules for the fermionic kinetic theory based on coherent quasiparticle approximation (cQPA). The new formulation immediately reveals the composite nature of the cQPA Wightman function as a product of two spectral functions and an effective two-point interaction vertex, which contains all quantum statistical and coherence information. We extend our previous work to the case of nonzero dispersive self-energy, which leads to a broader range of applications. By this scheme, we derive flavoured kineti…
The CPT-even gauge sector of the Standard Model Extension is composed of nineteen components comprised in the tensor $(K_{F})_{μνρσ}$, of \ which nine do not yield birefringence. In this work, we examine the Maxwell electrodynamics supplemented by these nine nonbirefringent CPT-even components in aspects related to the Feynman propagator and full consistency (stability, causality, unitarity). We adopt a prescription that parametrizes the nonbirefringent components in terms of a symmetric and traceless tensor, $K_{μν},$ and second parametrization that writes $K_{μν}$ in terms of two arbitrary f…
Topological data analysis is a rapidly developing area of data science where one tries to discover topological patterns in data sets to generate insight and knowledge discovery. In this project we use quantum walk algorithms to discover features of a data graph on which the walk takes place. This can be done faster on quantum computers where all paths can be explored using superposition. We begin with simple walks on a polygon and move up to graphs described by higher dimensional meshes. We use insight from the physics description of quantum walks defined in terms of probability amplitudes to …
We link the notion causality with the orientation of the 2-complex on which spin foam models are based. We show that all current spin foam models are orientation-independent, pointing out the mathematical structure behind this independence. Using the technology of evolution kernels for quantum fields/particles on Lie groups/homogeneous spaces, we construct a generalised version of spin foam models, introducing an extra proper time variable and prove that different ranges of integration for this variable lead to different classes of spin foam models: the usual ones, interpreted as the quantum g…
By appeal to Distribution Theory we discuss in rigorous fashion, without appealing to {\bf any conjecture} (as usually done by other authors), the boundary-bulk propagators for the scalar field, both in the non-massive and massive cases. These calculations, new in the literature as far as we know, are carried out in two instances: (i) when the boundary is a Euclidean space and (ii) when it is of Minkowskian nature. In this last case we compute also three propagators: Feynman's, Anti-Feynman's, and Wheeler's (half advanced plus half retarded). For an operator corresponding to scalar field we ob…
Having in mind applications to gravitational wave theory (in connection with the radiation reaction problem), stochastic semiclassical gravity (in connection with the regularization of the noise kernel) and quantum field theory in higher-dimensional curved spacetime (in connection with the Hadamard regularization of the stress-energy tensor), we improve the DeWitt-Schwinger and Hadamard representations of the Feynman propagator of a massive scalar field theory defined on an arbitrary gravitational background by deriving higher-order terms for the covariant Taylor series expansions of the geome…
We show that the problem of solving recurrence relations for L-loop (R+1)-point Feynman integrals within the method of integration by parts is equivalent to the corresponding problem for (L+R)-loop vacuum or (L+R-1)-loop propagator-type integrals. Using this property we solve recurrence relations for two-loop massless vertex diagrams, with arbitrary numerators and integer powers of propagators in the case when two legs are on the light cone, by reducing the problem to the well-known solution of the corresponding recurrence relations for massless three-loop propagator diagrams with specific bou…
A proof-of-concept application of a quantum algorithm to multiloop Feynman integrals in the Loop-Tree Duality (LTD) framework is applied to a representative four-loop topology. Bootstrapping causality in the LTD formalism, is a suitable problem to address with quantum computers given the straightforward possibility to encode the two on-shell states of a propagator on the two states of a qubit. A modification of Grover's quantum search algorithm is developed and the quantum algorithm is successfully implemented on IBM Quantum and QUTE simulators.
An analog of the S=1/2 Feynman-Dyson propagator is presented in the framework of the S=1 Weinberg theory. The basis for this construction is the concept of the Weinberg field as a system of four field functions differing by parity and by dual transformations. Next, we analyze the recent controversy in the definitions of the Feynman-Dyson propagator for the field operator containing the S=1/2 self/anti-self charge conjugate states in the papers by D. Ahluwalia et al. and by W. Rodrigues Jr. et al. The solution of this mathematical controversy is obvious. It is related to the necessary doubling …
In order to use the Gaussian representation for propagators in Feynman amplitudes, a representation which is useful to relate string theory and field theory, one has to prove first that each $α$- parameter (where $α$ is the parameter associated to each propagator in the $α$-representation of the Feynman amplitudes) can be replaced by a constant instead of being integrated over and second, prove that this constant can be taken equal for all propagators of a given graph. The first proposition has been proven in one recent letter when the number of propagators is infinite. Here we prove the secon…
A quantum mechanical description of particle propagation on the discrete spacetime of a causal set is presented. The model involves a discrete path integral in which trajectories within the causal set are summed over to obtain a particle propagator. The sum-over-trajectories is achieved by a matrix geometric series. For causal sets generated by sprinkling points into 1+1 and 3+1 dimensional Minkowski spacetime the propagator calculated on the causal set is shown to agree, in a suitable sense, with the causal retarded propagator for the Klein-Gordon equation. The particle propagator described h…
Recently there is an alternative reduction method proposed by Chen in [1,2]. In this paper, using the one-loop scalar integrals with propagators having higher power, we show the power of the improved version of Chen's new method in which we used some tricks to cancel the dimension shift and the terms we do not want. We present the explicit examples of bubble, triangle, box and pentagon with one propagators doubled. With these results, we have completed our previous computations in \cite{wang} with the missed tadpole coefficients.
We analyze the algebra of Dirac observables of the relativistic particle in four space-time dimensions. We show that the position observables become non-commutative and the commutation relations lead to a structure very similar to the non-commutative geometry of Deformed Special Relativity (DSR). In this framework, it appears natural to consider the 4d relativistic particle as a five dimensional massless particle. We study its quantization in terms of wave functions on the 5d light cone. We introduce the corresponding five-dimensional action principle and analyze how it reproduces the physics …
The search for purely virtual quanta has attracted interest in the past. We consider various proposals and compare them to the concept of fake particle, or "fakeon". In particular, the Feynman-Wheeler propagator, which amounts to using the Cauchy principal value inside Feynman diagrams, violates renormalizability, unitarity and stability, due to the coexistence of the prescriptions $\pm iε$. We contrast the Feynman, fakeon and Feynman-Wheeler prescriptions in ordinary as well as cut diagrams. The fakeon does not have the problems of the Feynman-Wheeler propagator and emerges as the correct con…
We study the no gravity limit G_{N}-> 0 of the Ponzano-Regge amplitudes with massive particles and show that we recover in this limit Feynman graph amplitudes (with Hadamard propagator) expressed as an abelian spin foam model. We show how the G_{N} expansion of the Ponzano-Regge amplitudes can be resummed. This leads to the conclusion that the dynamics of quantum particles coupled to quantum 3d gravity can be expressed in terms of an effective new non commutative field theory which respects the principles of doubly special relativity. We discuss the construction of Lorentzian spin foam models …
We give the results for all the one-loop propagators, including finite parts, in the Coulomb gauge. In finite parts we find new non-rational functions in addition to the single logarithms of the Feynman gauge. Of course, the two gauges must agree for any gauge invariant function. We revise the manuscript hep-th/0311118v2 and Eur.Phys.J.C37, 307-313(2004) in accordance with the notation and correct Feynman rules for the Coulomb gauge in Minkowski space found in [16]. The high-energy behaviour of the proper two-point functions is added in Appendix C.
In this review, we discuss recent developments concerning efficient calculations of multi-loop multi-leg scattering amplitudes. Inspired by the remarkable properties of the Loop-Tree Duality (LTD), we explain how to reconstruct an integrand level representation of scattering amplitudes which only contains physical singularities. These so-called causal representations can be derived from connected binary partitions of Feynman diagrams, properly entangled according to specific rules. We will focus on the detection of flux orientations which are compatible with causality, describing the implement…
We evaluate the Wilson loop at second order in general non-covariant gauges by means of the causal principal-value prescription for the gauge- dependent poles in the gauge-boson propagator and show that the result agrees with the usual causal prescriptions.
In order to popularize the so called Schwinger's method we reconsider the Feynman propagator of two non-relativistic systems: a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field and a charged harmonic oscillator in a uniform magnetic field. Instead of solving the Heisenberg equations for the position and the canonical momentum operators, ${\bf R}$ and ${\bf P}$, we apply this method by solving the Heisenberg equations for the gauge invariant operators ${\bf R}$ and $\mathversion{bold}$π$ = {\bf P}-e{\bf A}$, the latter being the mechanical momentum operator. In our procedure we avoid fixing the gau…
The loop-tree duality (LTD) has become a novelty alternative to bootstrap the numerical evaluation of multi-loop scattering amplitudes. It has indeed been found that Feynman integrands, after the application of LTD, display a representation containing only physical information, the so-called causal representation. In this talk, we discuss the all-loop causal representation of multi-loop Feynman integrands, recently found in terms of features that describe a loop topology, vertices and edges. Likewise, in order to elucidate the numerical stability in LTD integrands, we present applications that…
The first application of a quantum algorithm to Feynman loop integrals is reviewed. The connection between quantum computing and perturbative quantum field theory is feasible due to fact that the two on-shell states of a Feynman propagator are naturally encoded in a qubit. The particular problem to be addressed is the identification of the causal singular configurations of multiloop Feynman diagrams. The identification of such configurations is carried out through the implementation of a modified Grover's quantum algorithm for querying multiple solutions over unstructured datasets.
Applying the principle of analytic extension for generalized functions we derive causal propagators for algebraic non-covariant gauges. The so generated manifestly causal gluon propagator in the light-cone gauge is used to evaluate two one-loop Feynman integrals which appear in the computation of the three-gluon vertex correction. The result is in agreement with that obtained through the usual prescriptions.
Starting from the Mellin-Barnes integral representation of a Feynman integral depending on set of kinematic variables $z_i$, we derive a system of partial differential equations w.r.t.\ new variables $x_j$, which parameterize the differentiable constraints $z_i=y_i(x_j)$. In our algorithm, the powers of propagators can be considered as arbitrary parameters. Our algorithm can also be used for the reduction of multiple hypergeometric sums to sums of lower dimension, finding special values and reduction equations of hypergeometric functions in a singular locus of continuous variables, or finding …
We present a method for a recursive graphical construction of Feynman diagrams with their correct multiplicities in quantum electrodynamics. The method is first applied to find all diagrams contributing to the vacuum energy from which all n-point functions are derived by functional differentiation with respect to electron and photon propagators, and to the interaction. Basis for our construction is a functional differential equation obeyed by the vacuum energy when considered as a functional of the free propagators and the interaction. Our method does not employ external sources in contrast to…
We show that a notion of one-particle state and the corresponding vacuum state exists in general curved backgrounds for spin $\frac{1}{2}$ fields. A curved spacetime can be equipped with a coordinate system in which the metric component $g_{--}=0$. We separate the component of the left-handed massless Dirac field which is annihilated by the null vector $\partial_-$ and compute the corresponding Feynman propagator. We find that the propagating modes are localized on two dimensional subspaces and the Feynman propagator is similar to the Feynman propagator of chiral fermions in two dimensional Mi…
Causal set theory provides a model of discrete spacetime in which spacetime events are represented by elements of a causal set---a locally finite, partially ordered set in which the partial order represents the causal relationships between events. The work presented here describes a model for matter on a causal set, specifically a theory of quantum scalar fields on a causal set spacetime background. The work starts with a discrete path integral model for particles on a causal set. Here quantum mechanical amplitudes are assigned to trajectories within the causal set. By summing these over all t…
The numerical evaluation of multi-loop scattering amplitudes in the Feynman representation usually requires to deal with both physical (causal) and unphysical (non-causal) singularities. The loop-tree duality (LTD) offers a powerful framework to easily characterise and distinguish these two types of singularities, and then simplify analytically the underling expressions. In this paper, we work explicitly on the dual representation of multi-loop Feynman integrals generated from three parent topologies, which we refer to as Maximal, Next-to-Maximal and Next-to-Next-to-Maximal loop topologies. In…
Recently the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) approach has been extended to loop level, but the resulting loop integrand has propagators that are linear in the loop momentum unlike Feynman's. In this note we present a new technique that directly produces quadratic propagators identical to Feynman's from the CHY approach. This paper focuses on $Φ^3$ theory but extensions to others theories are briefly discussed. In addition, our proposal has an interesting geometric meaning, we can interpret this new formula as a unitary cut on a higher genus Riemann surface.
In this manuscript, which is to appear in the proceedings of the conference "MathemAmplitude 2019" in Padova, Italy, we provide an overview of the module intersection method for the the integration-by-parts (IBP) reduction of multi-loop Feynman integrals. The module intersection method, based on computational algebraic geometry, is a highly efficient way of getting IBP relations without double propagator or with a bound on the highest propagator degree. In this manner, trimmed IBP systems which are much shorter than the traditional ones can be obtained. We apply the modern, Petri net based, wo…
One of Feynman's greatest contributions to physics was the interpretation of negative energies as antimatter in quantum field theory. A key component of this interpretation is the Feynman propagator, which seeks to describe the behavior of antimatter at the virtual particle level. Ironically, it turns out that one can dispense with the Feynman propagator in a direct-action theory of fields, while still retaining the interpretation of negative energy solutions as antiparticles.
We compute the Pauli-Jordan, Hadamard and Feynman propagators for the massive metrical perturbations on de Sitter space. They are expressed both in terms of mode sums and in invariant forms.
In this paper, we will calculate the bosonic as well as fermionic propagators under classical homogeneous and constant magnetic and electric fields in a Euclidean space. For this, we will reassess the Ritus' method for calculating the Feynman propagator.
Resumming quantum fluctuations at the level of the gravitational path integral is expected to result in non-local effective actions and thus in a non-trivial momentum dependence of the propagator. Which properties the (dressed) graviton propagator has to satisfy and whether they can all be met are key open questions. In this work we present criteria and conditions for the momentum dependence of a graviton propagator which is consistent with unitarity, causality, and stability in a non-perturbative setting. To this end, we revisit several aspects of these conditions, highlighting some caveats a…
We analyze the Cauchy problem for the Klein-Gordon equation on the type IIB supergravity backgrounds $AdS^5 \times Y^{p,q}$, where $Y^{p,q}$ is any of the Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds recently discovered by Gaunlett, Martelli, Sparks and Waldram (Adv. Theor. Math. Phys. 8 (2004) 711--734). Although these spaces are not globally hyperbolic, we prove that there exists a unique admissible propagator and derive an integral representation thereof using spectral-theoretic techniques.
Manifest N=2 supersymmetric hypermultiplet mass terms can be introduced in the projective N=2 superspace formalism. In the case of complex hypermultiplets, where the gauge covariantized spinor derivatives have an explicit representation in terms of gauge prepotentials, it is possible to interpret such masses as vacuum expectation values of an Abelian vector multiplet. The duality transformation that relates the N=2 off-shell projective description of the hypermultiplet to the on-shell description involving two N=1 chiral superfields allows us to obtain the massive propagators of the N=1 comple…
The causal set approach to quantum gravity models spacetime as a discrete structure - a causal set. Recent research has led to causal set models for the retarded propagator for the Klein-Gordon equation and the d'Alembertian operator. These models can be compared to their continuum counterparts via a sprinkling process. It has been shown that the models agree exactly with the continuum quantities in the limit of an infinite sprinkling density - the continuum limit. This paper obtains the correction terms for these models for sprinkled causal sets with a finite sprinkling density. These correct…
