3C 345 is one of the archetypical active galactic nuclei, showing structural and flux variability on parsec scales near a compact unresolved radio core. During the last 2 years, the source has been undergoing a period of high activity visible in the broad spectral range, from radio through high-energy bands. We have been monitoring parsec-scale radio emission in 3C 345 during this period at monthly intervals, using the VLBA at 15, 24, and 43 GHz. Our radio observations are compared with gamma-ray emission detected by Fermi-LAT in the region including 3C 345 (1FGL J1642.5+3947). Three distinct gamma-ray events observed in this region are associated with the propagation of relativistic plasma condensations inside the radio jet of 3C 345. We report on evidence for the gamma-rays to be produced in a region of the jet of up to 40 pc (de-projected) in extent. This suggests the synchrotron self-Compton process as the most likely mechanism for production of gamma-rays in the source.
In 2019, Sgr A* - the supermassive black hole in the Galactic Center - underwent unprecedented flaring activity in the near infrared (NIR), brightening by up to a factor of 100 compared to quiescent values. Here we report ALMA observations of Sgr A*'s continuum variability at 1.3 mm (230 GHz) - a tracer of the accretion rate - conducted one month after the brightest detected NIR flare and in the middle of the flaring activity of 2019. We develop an innovative light curve extraction technique which (together with ALMA's excellent sensitivity) allows us to obtain the light curves which are simul…
Multi-wavelength study of flaring activity in HBL 1ES 1959+650 during 2015-16
In February 2017 the blazar OJ287, one of the best super-massive binary-black-hole-system candidates, was detected for the first time at very high energies (VHEs; E>100GeV) with the ground-based gamma-ray observatory VERITAS. Very high energy gamma rays are thought to be produced in the near vicinity of the central engine in active galactic nuclei. For this reason, and with the main goal of providing useful information for the characterization of the physical mechanisms connected with the observed teraelectronvolt flaring event, we investigate the parsec-scale source properties by means of hig…
M87 is a giant radio galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster, known to be a very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray source. As radio galaxies are considered the misaligned low-redshift counterparts of blazars, they are excellent laboratories for testing AGN emission models. M87 has been detected and monitored by Fermi-LAT and several atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Recently, the HAWC Collaboration presented marginal evidence of 4.5 year TeV gamma-ray emission from this object. The HAWC data has the potential to constrain the average VHE emission of sources of complex behavior, like M87, for which the p…
According to radiative models, radio galaxies are predicted to produce gamma rays from the earliest stages of their evolution onwards. The study of the high-energy emission from young radio sources is crucial for providing information on the most energetic processes associated with these sources, the actual region responsible for this emission, as well as the structure of the newly born radio jets. Despite systematic searches for young radio sources at gamma-ray energies, only a handful of detections have been reported so far. Taking advantage of more than 11 years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data, w…
Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) can suffer strong absorption above E = 25/(1+z) GeV, due to gamma-gamma interaction if the emitting region is at sub-parsec scale from the super-massive black hole (SMBH). Gamma-ray flares from these astrophysical sources can investigate the location of the high-energy emission region and the physics of the radiating processes. We present a remarkable gamma-ray flaring activity from FSRQ PKS 2023-07 during April 2016, as detected by both AGILE and Fermi satellites. An intensive multi-wavelength campaign, triggered by Swift, covered the entire duration of the…
Context: Episodic flaring activity is a common feature of X-ray pulsars in HMXBs. In some Be/X-ray binaries flares were observed in quiescence or prior to outbursts. EXO 2030+375 is a Be/X-ray binary showing "normal" outbursts almost every ~46 days, near periastron passage of the orbital revolution. Some of these outbursts were occasionally monitored with the INTEGRAL observatory. Aims: The INTEGRAL data revealed strong quasi-periodic flaring activity during the rising part of one of the system's outburst. Such activity has previously been observed in EXO 2030+375 only once, in 1985 with EXOSA…
Ultraluminous X-ray sources are considered amongst the most extremely accreting objects in the local Universe. The recent discoveries of pulsating neutron stars in ULXs strengthened the scenario of highly super-Eddington accretion mechanisms on stellar mass compact objects. In this work, we present the first long-term light curve of the source NGC 4559 X7 using all the available Swift, XMM-Newton, Chandra and NuSTAR data. Thanks to the high quality 2019 XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, we investigated in an unprecedented way the spectral and temporal properties of NGC 4559 X7. The source di…
Blazars exhibit stochastic flux variability across the electromagnetic spectrum, often exhibiting heavy-tailed flux distributions, commonly modeled as lognormal. However, Tavecchio et al. (2020) and Adams et al. (2022) found that the high-energy gamma-ray flux distributions of several of the brightest flaring Fermi-LAT flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are well modeled by an even heavier-tailed distribution, which we show is the inverse gamma distribution. We propose an autoregressive inverse gamma variability model in which an inverse gamma flux distribution arises as a consequence of a sho…
Constraining the Physical Conditions in the Jets of Gamma-ray Flaring Blazars using Centimeter-Band Polarimetry and Radiative Transfer Simulations. II. Exploring Parameter Space and Implications
The high energy peaked blazars are known to undergo episodes of flaring in GeV-TeV gamma-rays involving different time scales and the flaring mechanism is not well understood despite long term simultaneous multiwavelength observations. These gamma-rays en route to Earth undergo attenuation by the extra galactic background light. Using the photohadronic model, where the seed photons follow a power-law spectrum and a template extragalactic background light model, we derive a simple relation between the observed multi-TeV gamma-ray flux and the intrinsic flux with a single parameter. We study 42 …
We investigate the gamma-ray and X-ray emission from the transient gamma-ray source Fermi J0035+6131, which was discovered with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) near the Galactic plane at $b=1.3^\circ$, and we discuss potential multi-wavelength counterparts of the gamma-ray source. Our analysis of over 9 years of Fermi LAT data revealed two flaring events lasting 10-30 hr during which the gamma-ray flux increased by a factor of >300 compared to the long-term average. We also analyzed X-ray data obtained with XMM-Newton and Swift and identified several sources with a hard X-ray spectrum ins…
The flat-spectrum radio quasar 3C~454.3 throughout the years has presented very high activity phases (flares) in which the different wavebands increase their flux dramatically. In this work, we perform multiwavelength analysis from radio to gamma-rays and study the Mg~II~$λ2798$Å emission line and the UV~Fe~II band from 2008-2018. We found that an increase in the 43 GHz flux density of the quasi-stationary component C, coincides with the estimated time at which a superluminal blob ejected from the radio core (which caused the brightest flare of 2010) collides with the quasi-stationary componen…
Blazars are known for their energetic multiwavelength flares from radio wavelengths to high-energy $γ$-rays. In this work, we study radio, optical, and $γ$-ray light curves of 145 bright blazars spanning up to 8~yr, to probe the flaring activity and interband correlations. Of these, 105 show $>1σ$ correlations between one or more wavebands, 26 of which have a $>3σ$ correlation in at least one wavelength pair, as measured by the discrete correlation function. The most common and strongest correlations are found between the optical and $γ$-ray bands, with fluctuations simultaneous within our $\s…
The frequent flaring events in the X-ray and the NIR radiation of Sgr A* seem not to be periodic in time. However, statistical regularities, here termed "modulations by a pacemaker", are found in the recorded arrival times of both types of events. The characteristic time of the X-ray pacemaker is 149 min and that of the NIR pacemaker is 40 min. Their reality as derived from observed data can be accepted at larger than 4.6σ and 3.8σ levels of statistical confidence, respectively. These results can be interpreted as evidence for a star that revolves around the BH of Sgr A* in a slightly elliptic…
The microquasar V404 Cygni (also known as GS 2023+338) was previously reported to have weak GeV gamma-ray emission in sub-day time periods during its 2015 outburst. In order to provide more detailed information at the high energy range for this black hole binary system, we conduct analysis to the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi). Both LAT database and source catalog used are the latest. In addition to the previously reported detection at the peak of the 2015 outburst, we find possible detection ($\sim 4σ$) of the source durin…
Blazars are a subclass of AGN and flaring in multi-TeV gamma-ray seems to be the major activity in high energy blazars a subgrup of blazars. Flaring is also unpredictable and switches between quiescent and active states involving different time scales and fluxes. While in some high energy blazars a strong temporal correlation between X-ray and multi-TeV gamma-ray has been observed, outbursts in some other have no low energy counterparts and explanation of such extreme activity needs to be addressed through different mechanisms as it is not understood well. The extragalactic background light (E…
Individual astrophysical sources previously detected in neutrinos are limited to the Sun and the supernova 1987A, whereas the origins of the diffuse flux of high-energy cosmic neutrinos remain unidentified. On 22 September 2017 we detected a high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A, with an energy of approximately 290 TeV. Its arrival direction was consistent with the location of a known gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056, observed to be in a flaring state. An extensive multi-wavelength campaign followed, ranging from radio frequencies to gamma-rays. These observations characterize the variability and…
Recent detection of the neutrino events IceCube-170922A, 13 muon-neutrino events observed in 2014-2015 and IceCube-141209A by IceCube observatory from the Blazars, namely TXS 0506+056, PKS 0502+049/TXS 0506+056 and GB6 J1040+0617 respectively in the state of enhanced gamma-ray emission, indicates the acceleration of cosmic rays in the blazar jets. The photo-meson ($pγ$) interaction cannot explain the IceCube observations of 13 neutrino events. The non-detection of broadline emission in the optical spectra of the IceCube blazars, however, question the hadronuclear (pp) interaction interpretatio…
Following the detection of a long GRB 190919B by INTEGRAL (INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory), we obtained an optical photometric sequence of its optical counterpart. The light curve of the optical emission exhibits an unusually steep rise ~100 s after the initial trigger. This behaviour is not expected from a 'canonical' GRB optical afterglow. As an explanation, we propose a scenario consisting of two superimposed flares: an optical flare originating from the inner engine activity followed by the hydrodynamic peak of an external shock. The inner-engine nature of the first pulse …
In this work, we study the short term flaring activity from the high synchrotron peaked blazar Mrk 501 detected by the FACT and H.E.S.S. telescopes in the energy range 2-20 TeV during June 23-24, 2014 (MJD 56831.86-56831.94). We revisit this major TeV flare of the source in the context of near simultaneous multi-wavelength observations of gamma-rays in MeV-GeV regime with Fermi-LAT, soft X-rays in 0.3-10 keV range with Swift-XRT, hard X-rays in 10-20 keV and 15-50 keV bands with MAXI and Swift-BAT respectively, UV-Optical with Swift-UVOT and 15 GHz radio with OVRO telescope. We have performed …

Including millimeter-wave (mm-wave) data in multi-wavelength studies of the variability of active galactic nuclei (AGN) can provide insights into AGN physics that are not easily accessible at other wavelengths. We demonstrate in this work the potential of cosmic microwave background (CMB) telescopes to provide long-term, high-cadence mm-wave AGN monitoring over large fractions of sky. We report on a pilot study using data from the SPTpol instrument on the South Pole Telescope (SPT), which was designed to observe the CMB at arcminute and larger angular scales. Between 2013 and 2016, SPTpol was …
