This article constructs flat-sky approximations in a controlled way in the context of the cosmic microwave background observations for the computation of both spectra and bispectra. For angular spectra, it is explicitly shown that there exists a whole family of flat-sky approximations of similar accuracy for which the expression and amplitude of next to leading order terms can be explicitly computed. It is noted that in this context two limiting cases can be encountered for which the expressions can be further simplified. They correspond to cases where either the sources are localized in a narrow region (thin-shell approximation) or are slowly varying over a large distance (which leads to the so-called Limber approximation). Applying this to the calculation of the spectra it is shown that, as long as the late integrated Sachs-Wolfe contribution is neglected, the flat-sky approximation at leading order is accurate at 1% level for any multipole. Generalization of this construction scheme to the bispectra led to the introduction of an alternative description of the bispectra for which the flat-sky approximation is well controlled. This is not the case for the usual description of the bispectrum in terms of reduced bispectrum for which a flat-sky approximation is proposed but the next-to-leading order terms of which remain obscure.
We propose optimal estimators for bispectra from excited states. Two common properties of such bispectra are the enhancement in the collinear limit, and the prediction of oscillating features. We review the physics behind excited states and some of the choices made in the literature. We show that the enfolded template is a good template in the collinear limit, but does poorly elsewhere, establishing a strong case for an improved estimator. Although the detailed scale dependence of the bispectra differs depending on various assumptions, generally the predicted bispectra are either effectively 1…
Chern-Simons gravity coupled to the scalar sector through a generic coupling function $f(ϕ)$ can be tested at the very high energies of the inflationary period. In 1706.04627, we computed the theoretical parity breaking signatures of the $\langle γγζ\rangle$ primordial bispectrum which mixes two gravitons and one scalar curvature perturbation. We defined a parameter $Π$ which measures the level of parity breaking of the corresponding bispectrum. In this work we forecast the expected $1 σ$ error on $Π$ using the cosmic microwave background (CMB) angular bispectra. We find that, given the angula…
Parity-violating extensions of Maxwell electromagnetism induce a rotation of the linear polarization plane of photons during propagation. This effect, known as cosmic birefringence, impacts on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations producing a mixing of $E$ and $B$ polarization modes which is otherwise null in the standard scenario. Such an effect is naturally parametrized by a rotation angle which can be written as the sum of an isotropic component $α_0$ and an anisotropic one $δα(\hat{\mathbf{n}})$. In this paper we compute angular power spectra and bispectra involving $δα$ and t…
Cross-correlations between Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization anisotropies and $μ$-spectral distortions have been considered to measure (squeezed) primordial scalar bispectra in a range of scales inaccessible to primary CMB bispectra. In this work we address whether it is possible to constrain tensor non-Gaussianities with these cross-correlations. We find that only primordial tensor bispectra with statistical anisotropies leave distinct signatures, while isotropic tensor bispectra leave either vanishing or highly suppressed signatures. We discuss how the angular de…

Tensor non-Gaussianities are a key ingredient to test the symmetries and the presence of higher spin fields during the inflationary epoch. Indeed, the shape of the three point correlator of the graviton is totally fixed by the symmetries of the de Sitter stage and, in the case of parity conservation, gets contributions only from the ordinary gravity action plus a higher derivative term called the (Weyl)$^3$ action. We discuss current and future bounds on the three point tensor contribution from the (Weyl)$^3$ term using cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectra. Our results indicate that for…
With the advent of a new generation of cosmological experiments that will provide high-precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and galaxies in the large-scale structure, it is pertinent to examine the potential of performing a joint analysis of multiple cosmological probes. In this paper, we study the cosmological information content contained in the one-loop power spectra and tree bispectra of galaxies cross-correlated with CMB lensing. We use the FFTLog method to compute angular correlations in spherical harmonic space, applicable for wide angles that can be accessed …
We use the binned bispectrum estimator to determine the bispectra of the dust, free-free, synchrotron, and AME galactic foregrounds using maps produced by the Commander component separation method from Planck 2015 data. We find that all of these peak in the squeezed configuration, allowing for potential confusion with in particular the local primordial shape. Applying an additional functionality implemented in the binned bispectrum estimator code, we then use these galactic bispectra as templates in an $f_\mathrm{NL}$ analysis of other maps. After testing and validating the method and code wit…
We propose an (optimal) estimator for a CMB bispectrum containing logarithmically spaced oscillations. There is tremendous theoretical interest in such bispectra, and they are predicted by a plethora of models, including axion monodromy models of inflation and initial state modifications. The number of resolved logarithmical oscillations in the bispectrum is limited due to the discrete resolution of the multipole bispectrum. We derive a simple relation between the maximum number of resolved oscillations and the frequency. We investigate several ways to factorize the primordial bispectrum, and …
It is well known that non-trivial squeezed tensor bispectra can lead to anisotropies in the inflationary stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background, providing us with an alternative and complementary window to primordial non-Gaussianities (NGs) with respect to the CMB. Previous works have highlighted the detection prospects of parity-even tensor NGs via the GW $I$-mode anisotropies. In this work we extend this by analysing for the first time the additional information carried by GW $V$-mode anisotropies due to squeezed NGs. We show that GW $V$ modes allow us to probe parity-odd squeezed $\l…

Non-Gaussianity in the distribution of inflationary perturbations, measurable in statistics of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large scale structure fluctuations, can be used to probe non-trivial initial quantum states for these perturbations. The bispectrum shapes predicted for generic non-Bunch-Davies initial states are non-factorizable ("non-separable") and are highly oscillatory functions of the three constituent wavenumbers. This can make the computation of CMB bispectra, in particular, computationally intractable. To efficiently compare with CMB data one needs to construct a se…
Non-linear effects in the early Universe generate non-zero bispectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization, even in the absence of primordial non-Gaussianity. In this paper, we compute the contributions from isocurvature modes to the CMB bispectra using a modified version of the second-order Boltzmann solver SONG. We investigate the ability of current and future CMB experiments to constrain these modes with observations of the bispectrum. Our results show that the enhancement due to single isocurvature modes mixed with the adiabatic mode is negligible for the pa…
We investigate the statistical power of higher-order statistics and cross-correlation statistics to constrain the primordial non-Gaussianity from the imaging surveys. In particular, we consider the local-type primordial non- Gaussianity and discuss how well one can tightly constrain the higher-order non-Gaussian parameters ($g_{\rm NL}$ and $τ_{\rm NL}$) as well as the leading order parameter $f_{\rm NL}$ from the halo/galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing measurements. Making use of a strong scale-dependent behavior in the galaxy/halo clustering, Fisher matrix analysis reveals that…
Early energy injection to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from dissipation of acoustic waves generates deviations from the blackbody spectrum not only at second-order but also at third-order in cosmological perturbations. We compute this new spectral distortion $\mathcal κ$ based on third-order cosmological perturbation theory and show that $κ$ arises as a result of mode coupling between spectral distortions and temperature perturbations. The ensemble average of $κ$ can be directly sourced by (integrated) primordial non-Gaussianity. In particular, we roughly estimate the signal as $κ=f^{…
We present $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ estimators for the small-scale power spectrum and bispectrum in cosmological simulations. In combination with traditional methods, these allow spectra to be efficiently computed across a vast range of scales, requiring orders of magnitude less computation time than Fast Fourier Transform based approaches alone. These methods are applicable to any tracer; simulation particles, halos or galaxies, and take advantage of the simple geometry of the box and periodicity to remove almost all dependence on large random particle catalogs. By working in configuration-space, b…
Statistical isotropy (SI) is one of the fundamental assumptions made in cosmological model building. This assumption is now being rigorously tested using the almost full sky measurements of the CMB anisotropies. A major hurdle in any such analysis is to handle the large biases induced due to the process of masking. We have developed a new method of analysis, using the bipolar spherical harmonic basis functions, in which we semi-analytically evaluate the modifications to SI violation induced by the mask. The method developed here is generic and can be potentially used to search for any arbitrar…
The next generation of ground-based CMB experiments aim to measure temperature and polarization fluctuations up to $\ell_{\rm max} \approx 5000$ over half of the sky. Combined with Planck data on large scales, this will provide improved constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity. However, the impressive resolution of these experiments will come at a price. Besides signal confusion from galactic foregrounds, extra-galactic foregrounds and late-time gravitational effects, gravitational lensing will introduce large non-Gaussianity that can become the leading contribution to the bispectrum covarian…
As well as primary fluctuations, CMB temperature maps contain a wealth of additional information in the form of secondary anisotropies. Secondary effects that can be identified with individual objects, such as the thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effects due to galaxy clusters, are difficult to unambiguously disentangle from foreground contamination and the primary CMB however. We develop a Bayesian formalism for rigorously characterising anisotropies that are localised on the sky, taking the TSZ and KSZ effects as an example. Using a Gibbs sampling scheme, we are able to efficientl…
A measurement of primordial non-gaussianity will be of paramount importance to distinguish between different models of inflation. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy observations have set unprecedented bounds on the non-gaussianity parameter f_NL but the interesting regime f_NL <~ 1 is beyond their reach. Brightness-temperature fluctuations in the 21-cm line during the dark ages (z ~ 30-100) are a promising successor to CMB studies, giving access to a much larger number of modes. They are, however, intrinsically non-linear, which results in secondary non-gaussianities orders of magnit…
Cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectral distortion from Rayleigh scattering is calculated for the first time in rigorous second-order cosmological perturbation theory. The new spectral distortion is sensitive to acoustic dissipation at $10^{-2}<k{\rm Mpc}/h<1$, which slightly extends the scale constrained by the CMB anisotropies. The spectral shape is different from either temperature perturbations or any other traditional spectral distortions from Compton scattering, such as $y$ and $μ$. The new spectral distortion is not formed in the late Universe, unlike the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich e…
Minkowski Functionals (MF) are excellent tools to investigate the statistical properties of the cosmic background radiation (CMB) maps. Between their notorious advantages is the possibility to use them efficiently in patches of the CMB sphere, which allow studies in masked skies, inclusive analyses of small sky regions. Then, possible deviations from Gaussianity are investigated by comparison with MF obtained from a set of Gaussian isotropic simulated CMB maps to which are applied the same cut-sky masks. These analyses are sensitive enough to detect contaminations of small intensity like prima…
We propose a model of cosmological evolution of the early and late Universe which is consistent with observational data and naturally explains the origin of inflation and dark energy. We show that the de Sitter accelerated expansion of the FLRW space with no matter fields (hereinafter, empty space) is its natural state, and the model does not require either a scalar field or cosmological constant or any other hypotheses. This is due to the fact that the de Sitter state is an exact solution of the rigorous mathematically consistent equations of one-loop quantum gravity for the empty FLRW space …
In the conference presentation we have reviewed the theory of non-Gaussian geometrical measures for the 3D Cosmic Web of the matter distribution in the Universe and 2D sky data, such as Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps that was developed in a series of our papers. The theory leverages symmetry of isotropic statistics such as Minkowski functionals and extrema counts to develop post- Gaussian expansion of the statistics in orthogonal polynomials of invariant descriptors of the field, its first and second derivatives. The application of the approach to 2D fields defined on a spherical sky w…
We present a case study describing efforts to optimise and modernise "Modal", the simulation and analysis pipeline used by the Planck satellite experiment for constraining general non-Gaussian models of the early universe via the bispectrum (or three-point correlator) of the cosmic microwave background radiation. We focus on one particular element of the code: the projection of bispectra from the end of inflation to the spherical shell at decoupling, which defines the CMB we observe today. This code involves a three-dimensional inner product between two functions, one of which requires an inte…
