We provide a classification of entangled states that uses new discrete entanglement invariants. The invariants are defined by algebraic properties of linear maps associated with the states. We prove a theorem on a correspondence between the invariants and sets of equivalent classes of entangled states. The new method works for an arbitrary finite number of finite-dimensional state subspaces. As an application of the method, we considered a large selection of cases of three subspaces of various dimensions. We also obtain an entanglement classification of four qubits, where we find 27 fundamental sets of classes.
We propose new algebraic invariants that distinguish and classify entangled states. Considering qubits as well as higher spin systems, we obtained complete entanglement classifications for cases that were either unsolved or only conjectured in the literature.
We find that multidimensional determinants "hyperdeterminants", related to entanglement measures (the so-called concurrence or 3-tangle for the 2 or 3 qubits, respectively), are derived from a duality between entangled states and separable states. By means of the hyperdeterminant and its singularities, the single copy of multipartite pure entangled states is classified into an onion structure of every closed subset, similar to that by the local rank in the bipartite case. This reveals how inequivalent multipartite entangled classes are partially ordered under local actions. In particular, the …
Recent works by Brown et al and Borras et al have explored numerical optimisation procedures to search for highly entangled multi-qubit states according to some computationally tractable entanglement measure. We present an alternative scheme based upon the idea of searching for states having not only high entanglement but also simple algebraic structure. We report results for 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 qubits discovered by this approach, showing that many of such states do exist. In particular, we find a maximally entangled 6-qubit state with an algebraic structure simpler than the best results known so…
In this paper we present several multipartite quantum systems featuring the same type of genuine (tripartite) entanglement. Based on a geometric interpretation of the so-called $|W\rangle$ and $|GHZ\rangle$ states we show that the classification of all multipartite systems featuring those and only those two classes of genuine entanglement can be deduced from earlier work of algebraic geometers. This classification corresponds in fact to classification of fundamental subadjoint varieties and establish a connection between those systems, well known in Quantum Information Theory and fundamental s…
We propose a practical method for finding the canonical forms of arbitrary dimensional multipartite entangled states, either pure or mixed. By extending the technique developed in one of our recent works, the canonical forms for the mixed $N$-partite entangled states are constructed where they have inherited local unitary symmetries from their corresponding $N+1$ pure state counterparts. A systematic scheme to express the local symmetries of the canonical form is also presented, which provides a feasible way of verifying the local unitary equivalence for two multipartite entangled states.
We present solutions to a set of problems that arise in quantum entanglement theory, whose common trait is the use of algebraic methods. The backbone of the thesis consists of two general theorems, pertaining to specific convex sets of quantum maps. They are complemented by solutions of many more specific problems of rather technical character. These problems concerned questions such as the higher rank numerical ranges, the lengths of separable states, the solutions of compression equations, the completely entangled subspaces, and maximally entangled states. The solutions were obtained partly …
The aim of the paper is to propose geometric descriptions of multipartite entangled states using algebraic geometry. In the context of this paper, geometric means each stratum of the Hilbert space, corresponding to an entangled state, is an open subset of an algebraic variety built by classical geometric constructions (tangent lines, secant lines) from the set of separable states. In this setting we describe well-known classifications of multipartite entanglement such as $2\times 2\times(n+1)$, for $n\geq 1$, quantum systems and a new example with the $2\times 3\times 3$ quantum system. Our de…
We construct $3\otimes 3$ PPT entangled edge states with maximal ranks, to complete the classification of $3\otimes 3$ PPT entangled edge states by their types. The ranks of the states and their partial transposes are 8 and 6, respectively. These examples also disprove claims in the literature.
We prove that for many ranks r<2m-2, random rank r mixed states in bipartite mxm systems have relatively high Schmidt numbers, which is based on algebraic-geometric separability criterion proved in [1]. This also means that the algebraic-geometric separability criterion can be used to detect all low rank entangled mixed states outside a measure zero set.
A complete analysis of entangled bipartite qutrit pure states is carried out based on a simple entanglement measure. An analysis of all possible extremally entangled pure bipartite qutrit states is shown to reduce, with the help of SLOCC transformations, to three distinct types. The analysis and the results should be helpful for finding different entanglement types in multipartite pure state systems.
We presented a general classification scheme for the tripartite $L\times N\times N$ entangled system under stochastic local operation and classical communication. The whole classification procedure consists of two correlated parts: the simultaneous similarity transformation of a commuting matrix pair into a canonical form and the study of internal symmetry of parameters in the canonical form. Based on this scheme, a concrete example of entanglement classification for a $3\times N\times N$ system is given.
We present a practical entanglement classification scheme for pure state in form of $2\times L\times M\times N$ under the stochastic local operation and classical communication (SLOCC), where every inequivalent class of the entangled quantum states may be sorted out according to its standard form and the corresponding transformation matrix. This provides a practical method for determining the interconverting matrix between two SLOCC equivalent entangled states, and classification examples for some $2\times 4\times M\times N$ systems are also presented.
We first propose a new separability criterion based on algebraic-geometric invariants of bipartite mixed states introduced in [1], then prove that for all low ranks r <m+n-2, generic rank r mixed states in mxn systems have relatively high Schmidt numbers (thus entangled) by this separability criterion. This also means that the algebraic-geometric separability criterion proposed here can be used to dectect all low rank entangled mixed states outside a measure zero set.
We apply the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm to derive a set of entanglement witnesses (EW) to identify entanglement patterns in families of four-qubit states. The effectiveness of SVM for practical EW implementations stems from the coarse-grained description of families of equivalent entangled quantum states. The equivalence criteria in our work is based on the stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) classification and the description of the four-qubit entangled Werner states. We numerically verify that the SVM approach provides an effective tool to address the …
One of the key manifestations of quantum mechanics is the phenomenon of quantum entanglement. While the entanglement of bipartite systems is already well understood, our knowledge of entanglement in multipartite systems is still limited. This dissertation covers various aspects of the quantification of entanglement in multipartite states and the role of symmetry in such systems. Firstly, we establish a connection between the classification of multipartite entanglement and knot theory and investigate the family of states that are resistant to particle loss. Furthermore, we construct several exa…
In this brief paper, starting from recent works, we analyze from conceptual point of view this basic question: can the nature of quantum entangled states be interpreted ontologically or epistemologically? According to some works, the degrees of freedom (and the tool of quantum partitions) of quantum systems permit us to establish a possible classification between factorizable and entangled states. We suggest, that the "choice" of degree of freedom (or quantum partitions), even if mathematically justified introduces an epistemic element, not only in the systems but also in their classification.…
We develop a novel method in classifying the multipartite entanglement state of $2\times N\times N$ under stochastic local operation and classical communication. In this method, all inequivalent classes of true entangled state can be assorted directly without knowing the classification information of lower dimension ones for any given dimension $N$. It also gives a nature explanation for the non-local parameters remaining in the entanglement classes while $N\geq 4$ .
We extend the matrix decomposition method(MDM) in classifying the $2\times N\times N$ truly entangled states to $2\times M\times N$ system under the condition of stochastic local operations and classical communication. It is found that the MDM is quite practical and convenient in operation for the asymmetrical tripartite states, and an explicit example of the classification of $2\times 6\times 7$ quantum system is presented.
In this work we propose a practical entanglement classification scheme for pure states of $2\times L\times M\times N\times H$, under the stochastic local operation and classical communication (SLOCC), which generalizes the method explored in the entanglement classification of $2\times L\times M\times N$ to the five-partite system. The entangled states of $2\times L\times M\times N\times H$ system are first classified into different coarse-grained standard forms using matrix decompositions, and then fine-grained identification of two inequivalent entangled states with the same standard form are…
We use the concept of \textit{entangled graphs} with weighted edges to present a classification for four-qubit entanglement which is based neither on the LOCC nor the SLOCC. Entangled graphs, first introduced by Plesch et al. [Phys. Rev. A 67, (2003) 012322], are structures such that each qubit of a multi-qubit system is represented as a vertex and an edge between two vertices denotes bipartite entanglement between the corresponding qubits. Our classification is based on the use of generalized Schmidt decomposition of pure states of multi-qubit systems. We show that for every possible entangle…
We study fermionic matrix product operator algebras and identify the associated algebraic data. Using this algebraic data we construct fermionic tensor network states in two dimensions that have non-trivial symmetry-protected or intrinsic topological order. The tensor network states allow us to relate physical properties of the topological phases to the underlying algebraic data. We illustrate this by calculating defect properties and modular matrices of supercohomology phases. Our formalism also captures Majorana defects as we show explicitly for a class of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry-protected a…
Lamata et al. use an inductive approach to classify the entangled pure states of four qubits under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC) [PRA 75(2), 022318 (2007)]. The inductive method yields a priori ten different entanglement superclasses, of which they discard three as empty. One of the remaining superclasses is split in two, resulting in eight superclasses of genuine four-qubit entanglement. Here, we show that two of the three discarded superclasses are in fact non-empty and should have been retained. We give explicit expressions for the canonical states for thos…
Problem of classification of all the set of entangled states is considered. Invariance of entangled states relative to transformations from a group of symmetry of qubit space leads to classification of all states of the system through irreducible representations from that group. Excess of entropy of a subsystem over entropy of the whole system indicates the presence of entaglement in the system.
Entanglement is a unique nature of quantum theory and has tremendous potential for application. Nevertheless, the complexity of quantum entanglement grows exponentially with an increase in the number of entangled particles. Here we introduce a quantum state concentration scheme which decomposes the multipartite entangled state into a set of bipartite and tripartite entangled states. It is shown that the complexity of the entanglement induced by the large number of particles is transformed into the high dimensions of bipartite and tripartite entangled states for pure quantum systems. The result…
Variational quantum circuits (VQCs) built upon noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware, in conjunction with classical processing, constitute a promising architecture for quantum simulations, classical optimization, and machine learning. However, the required VQC depth to demonstrate a quantum advantage over classical schemes is beyond the reach of available NISQ devices. Supervised learning assisted by an entangled sensor network (SLAEN) is a distinct paradigm that harnesses VQCs trained by classical machine-learning algorithms to tailor multipartite entanglement shared by sensors for…
A multipartite quantum state is entangled if it is not separable. Quantum entanglement plays a fundamental role in many applications of quantum information theory, such as quantum teleportation. Stochastic local quantum operations and classical communication (SLOCC) cannot essentially change quantum entanglement without destroying it. Therefore, entanglement can be classified by dividing quantum states into equivalence classes, where two states are equivalent if each can be converted into the other by SLOCC. Properties of this classification, especially in the case of non two-dimensional quant…
We formalize and extend an operational multipartite entanglement measure introduced by T. R. Oliveira, G. Rigolin, and M. C. de Oliveira, Phys. Rev. A 73, 010305(R) (2006), through the generalization of global entanglement (GE) [D. A. Meyer and N. R. Wallach, J. Math. Phys. 43, 4273 (2002)]. Contrarily to GE the main feature of this measure lies in the fact that we study the mean linear entropy of all possible partitions of a multipartite system. This allows the construction of an operational multipartite entanglement measure which is able to distinguish among different multipartite entangled …
Walgate and Scott have determined the maximum number of generic pure quantum states that can be unambiguously discriminated by an LOCC measurement [Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical, 41:375305, 08 2008]. In this work, we determine this number in a more general setting in which the local parties have access to pre-shared entanglement in the form of a resource state. We find that, for an arbitrary pure resource state, this number is equal to the Krull dimension of (the closure of) the set of pure states obtainable from the resource state by SLOCC. Surprisingly, a generic resourc…
We approach multipartite entanglement classification in the symmetric subspace in terms of algebraic geometry, its natural language. We show that the class of symmetric separable states has the structure of a Veronese variety and that its $k$-secant varieties are SLOCC invariants. Thus SLOCC classes gather naturally into families. This classification presents useful properties such as a linear growth of the number of families with the number of particles, and nesting, i.e. upward consistency of the classification. We attach physical meaning to this classification through the required interacti…
A necessary and sufficient condition for the maximal entanglement of bipartite nonorthogonal pure states is found. The condition is applied to the maximal entanglement of coherent states. Some new classes of maximally entangled coherent states are explicited constructed; their limits give rise to maximally entangled Bell-like states.
Quantum entanglement and nonlocality are inequivalent notions: There exist entangled states that nevertheless admit local-realistic interpretations. This paper studies a special class of local-hidden-variable theories, in which the linear structure of quantum measurement operators is preserved. It has been proven that a quantum state has such linear hidden-variable representations if, and only if, it is not entangled. Separable states are known to admit nonclassical correlations as well, which are captured by quantum discord and related measures. In the unified framework presented in this pape…
We present a fine-structure entanglement classification under stochastic local operation and classical communication (SLOCC) for multiqubit pure states. To this end, we employ specific algebraic-geometry tools that are SLOCC invariants, secant varieties, to show that for $n$-qubit systems there are $\lceil\frac{2^{n}}{n+1}\rceil$ entanglement families. By using another invariant, $\ell$-multilinear ranks, each family can be further split into a finite number of subfamilies. Not only does this method facilitate the classification of multipartite entanglement, but it also turns out to be operati…
This paper presents a new measure of entanglement which can be employed for multipartite entangled systems. The classification of multipartite entangled systems based on this measure is considered. Two approaches to applying this measure to mixed quantum states are discussed.
We carry out the complete group classification of the class of (1+1)-dimensional linear Schrödinger equations with complex-valued potentials. After introducing the notion of uniformly semi-normalized classes of differential equations, we compute the equivalence groupoid of the class under study and show that it is uniformly semi-normalized. More specifically, each admissible transformation in the class is the composition of a linear superposition transformation of the corresponding initial equation and an equivalence transformation of this class. This allows us to apply the new version of the …

In this work, we address some important topological and algebraic aspects of two-qudit states evolving under local unitary operations. The projective invariant subspaces and evolutions are connected with the common elements characterizing the su(d) Lie algebra and their representations. In particular, the roots and weights turn out to be natural quantities to parametrize cyclic evolutions and fractional phases. This framework is then used to recast the coset contribution to the geometric phase in a form that generalizes the usual monopole-like formula for a single qubit.
We present a method to find the decompositions of tripartite entangled pure states which are smaller than two successive Schmidt decompositions. The method becomes very simple when one of the subsystems is a qubit. In this particular case, we get a classification of states according to their decompositions. Furthermore, we also use this method to classify the entangled states that can be inter-converted through stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). More general tripartite systems are briefly discussed.
Using an inductive approach to classify multipartite entangled states under stochastic local operations and classical communication introduced recently by the authors [Phys. Rev. A 74, 052336 (2006)], we give the complete classification of four-qubit entangled pure states. Apart from the expected degenerate classes, we show that there exist eight inequivalent ways to entangle four qubits. In this respect, permutation symmetry is taken into account and states with a structure differing only by parameters inside a continuous set are considered to belong to the same class.
For systems of identical Bosons, it is necessary to reformulate the notions of separability and entanglement in algebraic terms shifting the emphasis from the particle aspect of first quantization to the mode description typical of second quantization. Within this new framework, we show that, unlike for systems consisting of distinguishable qubits, negativity is an exhaustive bipartite entanglement witness for systems with fixed number of Bosons; further, we investigate the impact of dephasing noise in relation to the use of such many-body Bosonic systems in metrological applications.
When some of the parties of a multipartite entangled pure state are lost, the question arises whether the residual mixed state is also entangled, in which case the initial entangled pure state is said to be robust against particle loss. In this paper, we investigate this entanglement robustness for $N$-qubit pure states. We identify exhaustively all entangled states that are fragile, i.e., not robust, with respect to the loss of any single qubit of the system. We also study the entanglement robustness properties of symmetric states and put these properties in the perspective of the classificat…
We show that the following nontrivial necessary precondition for an entanglement evolution equation for pure Gaussian states under one-sided Gaussian channels holds. Suppose a Gaussian quantum channel acts on one mode of a pure entangled multi-mode Gaussian input state. Then, for a fixed channel, either all output states are entangled or none of them are. In other words, if the input state is Gaussian, pure and entangled, the separability after a one-sided Gaussian quantum channel does not depend on the input state, but only on the channel. Furthermore, a simple linear-algebraic separability c…
Quantum entanglement was first recognized as a feature of quantum mechanics in the famous paper of Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen [18]. Recently it has been realized that quantum entanglement is a key ingredient in quantum computation, quantum communication and quantum cryptography ([16],[17],[6]). In this paper, we introduce algebraic sets, which are determinantal varieties in the complex projective spaces or the products of complex projective spaces, for the mixed states in bipartite or multipartite quantum systems as their invariants under local unitary transformations. These invariants are n…

The notion of entanglement is the most well-known nonclassical correlation in quantum mechanics and a fundamental resource in quantum information and computation. This correlation, which is displayed by certain classes of quantum states, is of utmost importance when dealing with protocols such as quantum teleportation, cryptography, and quantum key distribution. In this paper, we exploit a classification of tripartite entanglement by introducing the concepts of entangled hypergraph and evolving entangled hypergraph as data structures suitable to model quantum protocols which use entanglement. …
We introduce a general systematic procedure for solving any binary-input binary-output game using operator algebraic techniques on the representation theory for the underlying group, which we then illustrate on the prominent class of tilted CHSH games: We derive for those an entire characterisation on the region exhibiting some quantum advantage and in particular derive a greatly simplified description for the required amount of anticommutation on observables (as being an essential ingredient in several adjacent articles). We further derive an abstract algebraic representation--free classifica…
An elementary introduction into algebraic approach to unified quantum information theory and operational approach to quantum entanglement as generalized encoding is given. After introducing compound quantum state and two types of informational divergences, namely, Araki-Umegaki (a-type) and of Belavkin-Staszewski (b-type) quantum relative entropic information, this paper treats two types of quantum mutual information via entanglement and defines two types of corresponding quantum channel capacities as the supremum via the generalized encodings. It proves the additivity property of quantum chan…
We present a review of the problem of finding out whether a quantum state of two or more parties is entangled or separable. After a formal definition of entangled states, we present a few criteria for identifying entangled states and introduce some entanglement measures. We also provide a classification of entangled states with respect to their usefulness in quantum dense coding, and present some aspects of multipartite entanglement.
We present a class of maximally entangled states generated by a high-dimensional generalisation of the \textsc{cnot} gate. The advantage of our approach is the simple algebraic structure of both entangling operator and resulting entangled states. In order to show that the method can be applied to any dimension, we introduce new sufficient conditions for global and maximal entanglement with respect to Meyer and Wallach's measure.
