This article studies the problem of approximating functions belonging to a Hilbert space $H_d$ with an isotropic or anisotropic Gaussian reproducing kernel, $$ K_d(\bx,\bt) = \exp\left(-\sum_{\ell=1}^dγ_\ell^2(x_\ell-t_\ell)^2\right) \ \ \ \mbox{for all}\ \ \bx,\bt\in\reals^d. $$ The isotropic case corresponds to using the same shape parameters for all coordinates, namely $γ_\ell=γ>0$ for all $\ell$, whereas the anisotropic case corresponds to varying shape parameters $γ_\ell$. We are especially interested in moderate to large $d$.

We study the complexity of high-dimensional approximation in the $L_2$-norm when different classes of information are available; we compare the power of function evaluations with the power of arbitrary continuous linear measurements. Here, we discuss the situation when the number of linear measurements required to achieve an error $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$ in dimension $d\in\mathbb{N}$ depends only poly-logarithmically on $\varepsilon^{-1}$. This corresponds to an exponential order of convergence of the approximation error, which often happens in applications. However, it does not mean that the …
We consider radial complex scaling/perfectly matched layer methods for scalar resonance problems in homogeneous exterior domains. We introduce a new abstract framework to analyze the convergence of domain truncations and discretizations. Our theory requires rather minimal assumptions on the scaling profile and includes affin, smooth and also unbounded profiles. We report a swift technique to analyze the convergence of domain truncations and a more technical one for approximations through simultaneaous truncation and discretization. We adapt the latter technique to cover also so-called exact me…
Global radial basis function (RBF) collocation methods with inifinitely smooth basis functions for partial differential equations (PDEs) work in general geometries, and can have exponential convergence properties for smooth solution functions. At the same time, the linear systems that arise are dense and severely ill-conditioned for large numbers of unknowns and small values of the shape parameter that determines how flat the basis functions are. We use Helmholtz equation as an application problem for the theoretical analysis and numerical experiments. We analyse and characterise the convergen…
The fundamental purpose of the present work is to constitute an enhanced Euler method with adaptive inverse-quadratic and inverse-multi-quadratic radial basis function (RBF) interpolation technique to solve initial value problems. These enhanced methods improve the local convergence of numerical solutions by utilizing a free parameter of radial basis functions. Consistency, convergence, and stability analysis are provided to support our claims for each method. Numerical results show that the accuracy and rate of convergence of each proposed method are the same as the original Euler method or i…
Localized collocation methods based on radial basis functions (RBFs) for elliptic problems appear to be non-robust in the presence of Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper we overcome this issue by formulating the RBF-generated finite difference method in a discrete least-squares setting instead. This allows us to prove high-order convergence under node refinement and to numerically verify that the least-squares formulation is more accurate and robust than the collocation formulation. The implementation effort for the modified algorithm is comparable to that for the collocation method.
Free boundary problems deal with systems of partial differential equations, where the domain boundaries are apriori unknown. Due to this special characteristic, it is challenging to solve free boundary problems either theoretically or numerically. In this paper, we develop a novel approach for solving a modified Hele-Shaw problem based on neural network discretization. The existence of the numerical solution with this discretization is established theoretically. We also numerically verify this approach by computing the symmetry-breaking solutions which are guided by the bifurcation analysis ne…
The complex scaling/perfectly matched layer method is a widely spread technique to simulate wave propagation problems in open domains. The method is very popular, because its implementation is very easy and does not require the knowledge of a fundamental solution. However, for anisotropic media the method may yield an unphysical radiation condition and lead to erroneous and unstable results. In this article we argue that a radial scaling (opposed to a cartesian scaling) does not suffer from this drawback and produces the desired radiation condition. This result is of great importance as it reh…
We present a new method for the solution of PDEs on manifolds $\mathbb{M} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of co-dimension one using stable scale-free radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. Our method involves augmenting polyharmonic spline (PHS) RBFs with polynomials to generate RBF-finite difference (RBF-FD) formulas. These polynomial basis elements are obtained using the recently-developed \emph{least orthogonal interpolation} technique (LOI) on each RBF-FD stencil to obtain \emph{local} restrictions of polynomials in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to stencils on $\mathbb{M}$. The resulting RBF-LOI method uses Ca…

In this paper, the accuracy of two mesh-free approximation approaches, the Gravity model and Radial Basis Function, are compared. The two schemes' convergence behaviors prove that RBF is faster and more accurate than the Gravity model. As a case study, the interpolation of temperature at different locations in Tennesse, USA, are compared. Delaunay mesh generation is used to create random points inside and on the border, which data can be incorporated in these locations. 49 MERRA weather stations as used as data sources to provide the temperature at a specific day and hour. The contours of inte…
Decoupled fractional Laplacian wave equation can describe the seismic wave propagation in attenuating media. Fourier pseudospectral implementations, which solve the equation in spatial frequency domain, are the only existing methods for solving the equation. For the earth media with curved boundaries, the pseudospectral methods could be less attractive to handle the irregular computational domains. In the paper, we propose a radial basis function collocation method that can easily tackle the irregular domain problems. Unlike the pseudospectral methods, the proposed method solves the equation i…
The Radial Point Interpolation Mixed Collocation (RPIMC) method is proposed in this paper for transient analysis of diffusion problems. RPIMC is an efficient purely meshless method where the solution of the field variable is obtained through collocation. The field function and its gradient are both interpolated (mixed collocation approach) leading to reduced $C$-continuity requirement compared to strong-form collocation schemes. The method's accuracy is evaluated in heat conduction benchmark problems. The RPIMC convergence is compared against the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Mixed Collocatio…
We present a novel hyperviscosity formulation for stabilizing RBF-FD discretizations of the advection-diffusion equation. The amount of hyperviscosity is determined quasi-analytically for commonly-used explicit, implicit, and implicit-explicit (IMEX) time integrators by using a simple 1D semi-discrete Von Neumann analysis. The analysis is applied to an analytical model of spurious growth in RBF-FD solutions that uses auxiliary differential operators mimicking the undesirable properties of RBF-FD differentiation matrices. The resulting hyperviscosity formulation is a generalization of existing …
