The formalism of electronic density-functional-theory, with Hubbard-U corrections (DFT+U), is employed in a computational study of the energetics of U_{1-x} Ce_x O_2 mixtures. The computational approach makes use of a procedure which facilitates convergence of the calculations to multiple self-consistent DFT+U solutions for a given cation arrangement, corresponding to different charge states for the U and Ce ions in several prototypical cation arrangements. Results indicate a significant dependence of the structural and energetic properties on the nature of both charge and cation ordering. With the effective Hubbard-U parameters that reproduce well the measured oxidation-reduction energies for urania and ceria, we find that charge transfer between U(IV) and Ce(IV) ions, leading to the formation of U(V) and Ce(III), gives rise to an increase in the mixing energy in the range of 4-14 kJ/mol of formula unit, depending on the nature of the cation ordering. The results suggest that although charge transfer between uranium and cerium ions is disfavored energetically, it is likely to be entropically stabilized at the high temperatures relevant to the processing and service of urania-based solid solutions.
Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Dihydrogen Binding Energetics on Ca Cations: an Assessment of Errors in Density Functionals for Weakly Bonded Systems
This work is aimed to study mixed-cation (hybrid methyl ammonium plus inorganic cations) halide perovskites using first principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) formalism in order to find their potential applications in perovskite based photovoltaics. This is an addition to the two previous studies performed by the author on high-throughput screening of hybrid halide and inorganic halide perovskites. This work involves mixing certain amounts of the inorganic cation to the organic site (methyl ammonium) and study the electronic structure of the resultant. 63 perovskites have been simulated in…
Birnessite was synthetized through redox reaction by mixing MnO4-, Mn2+ and OH- solutions. The Mn(VII): Mn(II) ratio of 0.33 was chosen and three methods were used consisting in a quick mixing under vigorous stirring of two of the three reagents and then on the dropwise addition of the third one. The obtained solids were characterized by XRD, FTIR and XPS spectroscopies. Their average oxidation states were determined from ICP and CEC measurements while their surface properties were investigated by XPS. This study provides an increased understanding of the importance of dissolved oxygen in the …
We study the energetic stability and structural features of bimetallic metal-organic frameworks. Such heterometallic MOFs, which can result from partial substitutions between two types of cations, can have specific physical or chemical properties used for example in catalysis or gas adsorption. We work here to provide through computational chemistry a microscopic understanding of bimetallic MOFs and the distribution of cations within their structure. We develop a methodology based on a systematic study of possible cation distributions at all cation ratios by means of quantum chemistry calculat…
Hybrid perovskites with mixed organic cations such as methylammonium and formamidinium have attracted interest due to their improved stability and capability to tune their properties varying the composition. In this work we report on the local variation of the structural and electronic properties in mixed A-site cation MA/FA lead iodide perovskites FAXMA1-XPBI3 evaluated from static first-principles calculations in certain structures where the orientations of organic cations result from examining the energy landscape of some compositions. The cation replacement at the A-site to form the solid …
A simple lattice model of a solid electrolyte presented as a xy-slab geometry system of mobile cations on a background of energetic landscape of the host system and a compensating field of uniformly distributed anions is studied. The system is confined in the z-direction between two oppositely charged walls, which are in parallel to xy-plane. Besides the long-range Coulomb interactions appearing in the system, the short-range attractive potential between cations is considered in our study. We propose the mean field description of this model and extend it by taking into account correlation effe…
The interaction between metal atoms and nucleobases has been a topic of high interest due to the wide scientific and technological implications. Combining density functional theory simulations with a literature overview, we achieved an exhaustive study of the ground state electronic properties of DNA/RNA nucleobases interacting with gold and silver atoms at three charge states: neutral, cationic, and anionic. We describe the nature of the stability and electronic properties in each hybrid metallic structure. In addition to the metal interacting with the five isolated nucleobases, we included t…
The lead-free double perovskite material (viz. Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$) has emerged as an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to lead halide perovskites. To make Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$ optically active in the visible region of solar spectrum, band gap engineering approach has been undertaken. Using Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$ as a host, band gap and optical properties of Cs$_2$AgBiCl$_6$ have been modulated by alloying with M(I), M(II), and M(III) cations at Ag-/Bi-sites. Here, we have employed density functional theory (DFT) with suitable exchange-correlation functionals in light of spin-orbit couplin…
