In a zero-dimensional superconductor, quantum size effects(QSE) not only set the limit to superconductivity, but are also at the heart of new phenomena such as shell effects, which have been predicted to result in large enhancements of the superconducting energy gap. Here, we experimentally demonstrate these QSE through measurements on single, isolated Pb and Sn nanoparticles. In both systems superconductivity is ultimately quenched at sizes governed by the dominance of the quantum fluctuations of the order parameter. However, before the destruction of superconductivity, in Sn nanoparticles we observe giant oscillations in the superconducting energy gap with particle size leading to enhancements as large as 60%. These oscillations are the first experimental proof of coherent shell effects in nanoscale superconductors. Contrarily, we observe no such oscillations in the gap for Pb nanoparticles, which is ascribed to the suppression of shell effects for shorter coherence lengths. Our study paves the way to exploit QSE in boosting superconductivity in low-dimensional systems.
Highly sophisticated synthesis methods and experimental techniques allow for precise measurements of magnetic properties of nanoparticles that can be reliably reproduced using theoretical models. Here, we investigate the magnetic properties of ferrite nanoparticles by using theoretical techniques based on Monte Carlo methods. We introduce three stages of sophistication in the macromagnetic model. First, by using tailor-made hamiltonians we study single nanoparticles. In a second stage, the internal structure of the nanoparticle is taken into consideration by defining an internal (core) and ext…

Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach, we study screening-induced phase transitions in core-shell ferroic nanoparticles for three different shapes: an oblate disk, a sphere, and a prolate needle. The nanoparticle is made of a ferroic CuInP2S6 core and covered by a "tunable" screening shell made of a phase-change material with a conductivity that varies as the material changes between semiconductor and metallic phases. We reveal a critical influence of the shell screening length on the phase transitions and spontaneous polarization of the nanoparticle core. Since the tunable screening s…
Using the extended discrete interaction model we investigate the tuneabilty of surface plasmon resonance in alloys and core-shell nanoparticles made from silver and gold. We show that the surface plasmon resonance of these alloys and core-shell particles to a large extent follow Vegard's law irrespective of the geometry of the nanoparticle. We show the evolution of the polarizability with size and demonstrate the highly non-linear behaviour of the polarizability with the ratio of the constituents and geometry in alloys and core-shell nanoparticles, with the exception for nanorod alloys. A thor…
In this work we investigate novel spherical core-shell nanoparticles with band inversion. The core and the embedding medium are normal semiconductors while the shell material is assumed to be a topological insulator. The envelope functions are found to satisfy a Dirac-like equation that can be solved in a closed form. The core-shell nanoparticle supports midgap bound states located at both interfaces due to band inversion. These states are robust since they are topologically protected. The energy spectrum presents mirror symmetry due to the chiral symmetry of the Dirac-like Hamiltonian. As a m…
We investigate the spatial distribution of spin orientation in magnetic nanoparticles consisting of hard and soft magnetic layers. The nanoparticles are synthesized in a core / shell spherical morphology where the magnetically hard, high anisotropy layer is CoFe$_2$O$_4$ (CFO) while the lower anisotropy material is Fe$_3$O$_4$ (FO). The nanoparticles have a mean diameter of $\sim$9.2 - 9.6 nm and are synthesized as two variants: a conventional hard / soft core / shell structure with a CFO core / FO shell (CFO@FO) and the inverted structure FO core / CFO shell (FO@CFO). High resolution electron…

Bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles enable tuning of the optical response and chemical stability by variation of the composition. The present numerical simulation study compares Ag-Au alloy, Ag@Au core-shell, and Au@Ag core-shell bimetallic plasmonic nanoparticles of both spherical and anisotropic (nanotriangle and nanorods) shapes. By studying both spherical and anisotropic (with LSPR in the near-infrared region) shapes, cases with and without interband transitions of Au can be decoupled. Explicit comparisons are facilitated by numerical models supported by careful validation and examination o…
Within the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we explore the impact of elastic anisotropy, electrostriction, flexoelectric couplings, and mismatch strain on the domain structure morphology in ferroelectric core-shell nanoparticles of spherical shape. We perform finite element modelling (FEM) for multiaxial ferroelectric nanoparticle cores covered with an elastically-isotropic soft or elastically-anisotropic rigid paraelectric shell, with and without mismatch strains. In the case of a core covered with a soft shell, the FEM results show that at room temperature a single polari…

We present a detailed atomistic picture of the oxidation mechanism of Co nanoparticles and its impact on magnetism by experimentally following the evolution of the structure, chemical composition, and magnetism of individual, gas-phase grown Co nanoparticles during controlled oxidation. The early stage oxidation occurs in a twostep process characterized by (i) the initial formation of small CoO crystallites randomly distributed across the nanoparticle surface, until their coalescence leads to structural completion of the oxide shell and passivation of the metallic core; (ii) progressive conver…
In the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach, we studied the possibility of controlling the polarity and chirality of equilibrium domain structures by a homogeneous external electric field in a nanosized ferroelectric core covered with an ultra-thin shell of screening charge. Under certain screening lengths and core sizes, the minimum of the LGD energy, which consists of Landau-Devonshire energy, Ginzburg polarization gradient energy, and electrostatic terms, leads to the spontaneous appearance of stable labyrinth domain structures in the core. The labyrinths evolve from a…
Nanomaterials with core-shell architectures are prominent examples of strain-engineered materials, where material properties can be designed by fine-tuning the misfit strain at the interface. Here, we elucidate the full 3D atomic structure of Pd@Pt core-shell nanoparticles at the single-atom level via atomic electron tomography. Full 3D displacement fields and strain profiles of core-shell nanoparticles were obtained, which revealed a direct correlation between the surface and interface strain. It also showed clear Poisson effects at the scale of the full nanoparticle as well as the local atom…
Optical phonons in nanoparticles with the randomness of interatomic bonds are considered both analytically and numerically. For weak dilute disorder two qualitatively different regimes of separated and overlapped levels are observed, resembling the case of random atomic masses investigated previously. At stronger and/or more dense disorder, the particles become essentially inhomogeneous, thus constituting the minimal model to describe an amorphous phase, where the picture of vibrational modes becomes more subtle. We concentrate here on the experimentally relevant case of strong disorder locate…
