We argue through a combination of slave boson mean field theory and the Bethe ansatz that the ground state of closely spaced double quantum dots in parallel coupled to a single effective channel are Fermi liquids. We do so by studying the dots' conductance, impurity entropy, and spin correlation. In particularly we find that the zero temperature conductance is characterized by the Friedel sum rule, a hallmark of Fermi liquid physics, and that the impurity entropy vanishes in the limit of zero temperature, indicating the ground state is a singlet. This conclusion is in opposition to a number of numerical renormalization group studies. We suggest a possible reason for the discrepancy.
We propose a realization of mechanically tunable Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in a double quantum dot nanoelectromechanical device. The coupling between spins of two quantum dots suspended above a metallic plate is mediated by conduction electrons. We show that the spin-mechanical interaction can be driven by a slow modulation of charge density in the metallic plate. We propose to use Stuckelberg oscillations as a sensitive tool for detection of the spin and charge states of the coupled quantum dots. Theory of mechanical back action induced by a dynamical spin-spin interaction is …
We investigated the electron transport properties of parallel-coupled double quantum dot (DQD) devices under magnetic fields. When a low magnetic field was applied, electron tunneling through parallel-coupled DQDs was observed. Under a high magnetic field, we observed both electron tunneling through parallel- and series-coupled DQDs under nonlinear transport conditions. In addition, the Pauli spin blockade was observed, indicating tunneling through the series-coupled DQDs. We attribute these behaviors to the magnetic-field-induced changes in the tunnel-couplings that allow the coexistence of t…
The bulk Rashba semiconductors BiTeX (X=I, Cl and Br) with intrinsically enhanced Rashba spin-orbit coupling provide a new platform for investigation of spintronic and magnetic phenomena in materials. We theoretically investigate the interlayer exchange interaction between two ferromagnets deposited on opposite surfaces of a bulk Rashba semiconductor BiTeI in its trivial and topological insulator phases. In the trivial phase BiTeI, we find that for ferromagnets with a magnetization orthogonal to the interface, the exchange coupling is reminiscent of that of a conventional three-dimensional met…
We calculate the current correlations for the steady-state electron transport through multi-level parallel quantum dots embedded in a short quantum wire, that is placed in a non-perfect photon cavity. We account for the electron-electron Coulomb interaction, and the para- and diamagnetic electron-photon interactions with a stepwise scheme of configuration interactions and truncation of the many-body Fock spaces. In the spectral density of the temporal current-current correlations we identify all the transitions, radiative and non-radiative, active in the system in order to maintain the steady …
We investigate the Josephson effect in one triple-terminal junction with embedded parallel-coupled double quantum dots. It is found that the inter-superconductor supercurrent has opportunities to oscillate in $4π$ period, with the adjustment of the phase differences among the superconductors. What is notable is that such a result is robust and independent of fermion parities, intradot Coulomb strength, and the dot-superconductor coupling manner. By introducing the concept of spinful many-particle Majorana modes, we present the analytical definition of the Majorana operator via superposing elec…
Strong electron correlations and interference effects are discussed in parallel-coupled single-level and orbitally doubly degenerate quantum dots. The finite-U mean-field slave boson approach is used to study many-body effects. The analysis is carried out in a wide range of parameter space including both atomic-like and molecular-like Kondo regimes and taking into account various perturbations, like interdot tunneling, interdot interaction, mixing of the electrode channels and exchange interaction. We also discuss the influence of singularities of electronic structure and the impact of polariz…
We study spin transport in the one- and two-electron regimes of parallel-coupled double quantum dots (DQDs). The DQDs are formed in InAs nanowires by a combination of crystal-phase engineering and electrostatic gating, with an interdot tunnel coupling ($t$) tunable by one order of magnitude. Large single-particle energy separations (up to 10 meV) and $|g^*|$ factors ($\sim$10) enable detailed studies of the $B$-field-induced transition from a singlet-to-triplet ground state as a function of $t$. In particular, we investigate how the magnitude of the spin-orbit-induced singlet-triplet anticross…
We use co-tunneling spectroscopy to investigate spin-, orbital-, and spin-orbital Kondo transport in a strongly confined system of InAs double quantum dots (QDs) parallel-coupled to source and drain. In the one-electron transport regime, the higher symmetry spin-orbital Kondo effect manifests at orbital degeneracy and no external magnetic field. We then proceed to show that the individual Kondo contributions can be isolated and studied separately; either by orbital detuning in the case of spin-Kondo transport, or by spin splitting in the case of orbital Kondo transport. By varying the inter-do…
We show that a Rabi-splitting of the states of strongly interacting electrons in parallel quantum dots embedded in a short quantum wire placed in a photon cavity can be produced by either the para- or the dia-magnetic electron-photon interactions when the geometry of the system is properly accounted for and the photon field is tuned close to a resonance with the electron system. We use these two resonances to explore the electroluminescence caused by the transport of electrons through the one- and two-electron ground states of the system and their corresponding conventional and vacuum electrol…
A single cavity photon mode is expected to modify the Coulomb interaction of an electron system in the cavity. Here we investigate this phenomena in a parallel double quantum dot system. We explore properties of the closed system and the system after it has been opened up for electron transport. We show how results for both cases support the idea that the effective electron-electron interaction becomes more repulsive in the presence of a cavity photon field. This can be understood in terms of the cavity photons dressing the polarization terms in the effective mutual electron interaction leadin…
We use tunneling spectroscopy to study the evolution of few-electron spin states in parallel InAs nanowire double quantum dots (QDs) as a function of level detuning and applied magnetic field. Compared to the much more studied serial configuration, parallel coupling of the QDs to source and drain greatly expands the probing range of excited state transport. Owing to a strong confinement, we can here isolate transport involving only the very first interacting single QD orbital pair. For the (2,0)-(1,1) charge transition, with relevance for spin-based qubits, we investigate the excited (1,1) tri…
We theoretically determine the magnetic exchange interaction between two ferromagnets coupled by a superconductor using a tight-binding lattice model. The main purpose of this study is to determine how the self-consistently determined superconducting state influences the exchange interaction and the preferred ground-state of the system, including the role of impurity scattering. We find that the superconducting state eliminates RKKY-like oscillations for a sufficiently large superconducting gap, making the anti-parallel orientation the ground state of the system. Interestingly, the superconduc…
We extend a perturbative, nonequilibrium renormalization group approach to multi-orbital systems and apply it for studying transport through two parallel quantum dots coupled electrostatically. In general, the conductance shows pronounced Kondoesque peaks at three voltages. One of these peaks disappears if, as in some experiments, one of the dots is decoupled from one of the two leads. For an asymmetric coupling to the leads, also negative differential conductances are possible. This is a genuine nonequilibrium effect, accompanying the Kondoesque peaks. Moreover, a criterion to distinguish spi…
Comment on: ``Zero temperature conductance of parallel T-shape double quantum dots'' [Physica E 39 (2007) 214, arXiv:0708.1842v1]
