As it was expected, the device effectively separates 50 fs pulse channels with 1.31 and 1.55 microns wavelengths. …
In this paper, we propose a pre-trained-combined neural network (PTCN) as a comprehensive solution to the inverse design of an integrated photonic circuit. By utilizing both the initially pre-trained inverse and forward model with a joint training process, our PTCN model shows remarkable tolerance to the quantity and quality of the training data. As a proof of concept demonstration, the inverse design of a wavelength demultiplexer is used to verify the effectiveness of the PTCN model. The correlation coefficient of the prediction by the presented PTCN model remains greater than 0.974 even when…
We characterize the frequency response of channel-interleaved photonic analog-to-digital converters (CI-PADCs) theoretically and experimentally. The CI-PADC is composed of a photonic frontend for photonic sampling and an electronic backend for quantization. The photonic frontend includes a photonic sampling pulse generator for directly high-speed sampling and an optical time-division demultiplexer (OTDM) for channel demultiplexing. It is found that the frequency response of the CI-PADC is influenced by both the photonic sampling pulses and the OTDM, of which the combined impact can be characte…
Atmospheric turbulences can generate scintillation or beam wandering phenomena that impairs free space optical (FSO) communication. The FSO receiver is characterized with a wavefront emulator bench that generates arbitrary phase and intensity patterns. The multimode…
Two-dimensional plasmonic demultiplexers for surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which consist of concentric grooves on a gold film, are proposed and experimentally demonstrated to realize light-SPP coupling, effective dispersion and multiple-channel SPP guiding. A resolution as high as 10 nm is obtained. The leakage radiation microscopy imaging shows that the SPPs of different wavelengths are focused and routed into different SPP strip waveguides. The plasmonic demultiplexer can thus serve as a wavelength division multiplexing element for integrated plasmonic circuit and also as a plasmonic sp…

The MSR cavity design has inner rods, outer rods and coupling rods. As the radius of the inner rod in MSR cavity changes, the cavity has the ability to filter different ITU.T G.6941 standard wavelengths like 1555.3 nm, 1555.5 nm, 1555.7 nm, and 1555…
Nanoantennas for highly efficient excitation and manipulation of surface waves at nanoscale are key elements of compact photonic circuits. However, previously implemented designs employ plasmonic nanoantennas with high Ohmic losses, relatively low spectral resolution, and complicated lithographically made architectures. Here we propose an ultracompact and simple dielectric nanoantenna (silicon nanosphere) allowing for both directional launching of surface plasmon polaritons on a thin gold film and their demultiplexing with a high spectral resolution. We show experimentally that mutual interfer…

We designed a silicon wavelength demultiplexer that split…
Artificially built periodic optical structures in dielectric and metallic media have generated considerable interest due to their potential for optical device miniaturization. In this context plasmonics, i.e., optics based on surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) offers new exciting prospects. SPPs are hybrid light/electron surface waves at the interface between a dielectric and a metal and as such hold the potential for 2D optical functionality. Indeed, SPP elements as mirrors, splitters and interferometers have been recently demonstrated. However, for plasmonics to qualify at the information tec…
We present a comparative experimental study of three silicon photonic echelle grating demultiplexers that are integrated with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) launch structure. By appropriate choice of the MZI configuration, the temperature induced shift of the demultiplexer channel wavelengths can be suppressed (athermal) or enhanced (super-thermal), or be controlled by an on-chip micro-heater. The latter two configurations allow the channel wavelengths to be actively tuned using lower power than possible by temperature tuning a conventional echelle demultiplexer. In the athermal configura…
Polarization-compatible receivers are indispensable in transceivers used for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communications, as light polarization is unpredictable after transmission through network fibers. However, the strong waveguide birefringence makes it difficult to realize a polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer in a silicon photonic (SiPh) receiver. Here, we utilized the birefringence effect for simultaneously demultiplexing wavelengths and polarizations, and experimentally demonstrated a novel polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer with a single d…
A major difficulty in applying computational design methods to nanophotonic devices is ensuring that the resulting designs are fabricable. Here, we describe a general inverse design algorithm for nanophotonic devices that directly incorporates fabrication constraints. To demonstrate the capabilities of our method, we designed a spatial-mode demultiplexer, wavelength demultiplexer, and directional coupler. We also designed and experimentally demonstrated a compact, broadband $1 \times 3$ power splitter on a silicon photonics platform. The splitter has a footprint of only $3.8 \times 2.5~\mathrm…
Previously proposed designs of integrated photonic devices have used the intuitive brute force approach or optimization methods that employ parameter search algorithms. In this paper, we propose efficient and compact 2D 1xN in-plane-incidence wavelength demultiplexers by using recently developed objective-first inverse design algorithm. Output ports in the presented 1xN photonic devices are located along the transverse to the input channel. Ultra-high …
Adiabatic waveguide taper and on-chip wavelength demultiplexer are the key components of photonic integrated circuits. However, these two kinds of devices which designed by traditional semi-analytic methods or brute-force search methods usually have large size. Here, based on regularized digital metamaterials, we have designed, fabricated and characterized a two-channel focused wavelength demultiplexer with a footprint of 2.4 x 10 um2. The designed demultiplexer can directly connect to a grating coupler under the absence of an adiabatic waveguide taper. The objective first method and modified …
The realization of ultra-compact passive silicon photonic devices is becoming more and more important for the future large-scale photonic integration as desired for many systems. Although some compact silicon photonic devices have been demonstrated by using inverse design, the device performance is still insufficient for real applications. We demonstrate a photonic circuit with integrated long-lived quantum memories. Pre-selected quantum nodes - diamond micro-waveguides containing single, stable, and negatively charged nitrogen vacancy centers - are deterministically integrated into low-loss silicon nitride waveguides. Each quantum memory node efficiently couples into the single-mode waveguide (> 1 Mcps collected into the waveguide) and exhibits long spin coherence times of up to 120 μs. Our system facilitates the assembly of multiple quantum memories into a photonic integrated circuit with near unity yield, paving the way towar…
We propose an equivalent circuit model for photonic spike processing laser neurons with an embedded saturable absorber---a simulation model for photonic excitable lasers (SIMPEL). We show that by mapping the laser neuron rate equations into a circuit model, SPICE analysis can be used as an efficient and accurate engine for numerical calculations, capable of generalization to a variety of different laser neuron types found in literature. The development of this model parallels the Hodgkin--Huxley model of neuron biophysics, a circuit framework which brought efficiency, modularity, and generaliz…
We present an accurate and fast 3D simulation scheme for out-of-plane grating couplers, based on two dimensional rigorous (finite difference time domain) grating simulations, the effective index method (EIM), and the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction formula. In comparison with full 3D FDTD simulations, the rms difference in electric field is below 5% and the difference in power flux is below 3%. A grating coupler for coupling from a silicon-on-insulator photonic integrated circuit to an optical fiber positioned 0.1 mm above the circuit is designed as example.

There has been recent interest in the development of optical analogues of lumped element circuitry, where optical elements act as effective optical inductors, capacitors, and resistors. Such optical circuitry requires the photonic equivalent of electrical wires, structures able carry optical frequency signals to and from the lumped circuit elements while simultaneously maintaining signal carrier wavelengths much larger than the size of the lumped elements. Here we demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of hybrid metal/doped-semiconductor 'photonic wires' operating at optical…
We propose a new method for mass production of the photonic crystal devices on the basis of widely-known and well-developed technology such as microstructured optical fibers. In this paper, we investigate the optical properties of side-excited microstructured optical fiber and discuss the conditions for utilization such a structure as a planar photonic crystal device, namely, the high-quality resonance filter.
A broadband opto-mechanical phase shifter for photonic integrated circuits is proposed and numerically investigated. The structure consists of a mode-carrying waveguide and a deformable non-mode-carrying nanostring, which are parallel with each other. Utilizing the optical gradient force between them, the nanostring can be deflected. Thus the effective refractive indices of the waveguide is changed with the deformation, and further causes a phase shift. The phase shift under different geometry sizes, launched powers and boundary conditions are calculated and the dynamical properties as well as…

Using transfer matrix method, a N=3 architecture is modeled to obtain frequency sextupling. An industry standard simulation tool …
The loss of surface plasmon polaritons has long been considered as a fatal shortcoming in information transport. Here we propose a plasmonic absorber utilizing this "shortcoming" to absorb the stray light in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Based on adiabatic mode evolution, its performance is insensitive to incident wavelength with bandwidth larger than 300nm, and robust against surrounding environment and temperature. Besides, the use of metal enables it to be very compact and beneficial to thermal dissipation. With this 40um-long absorber, the absorption efficiency can be over 99.8% at …
In the recent article by Feng et al. [Science 333, 729-733 (2011)] a system is proposed with a periodic spatial modulation of refractive index and absorption. It is claimed that this system is nonreciprocal and can be used as an optical isolator. The authors use an unconventional definition of reciprocity and thus make wrong conclusions on the applicability of the described phenomena for optical isolators. The fruitful association of quantum and integrated photonics holds the promise to produce, manipulate, and detect quantum states of light using compact and scalable systems. Integrating all the building-blocks necessary to produce high-quality photonic entanglement in the telecom wavelength range out of a single chip remains a major challenge, mainly due to the limited performance of on-chip light rejection filters. We report a stand-alone, telecom-compliant, device that integrates, on a single substrate, a nonlinear photon-pair generator and a passive pump rejection filter. Using standard cha…

This paper demonstrates the operation of a universal RF photonic circuit that consists of a generalized Mach Zehnder Interferometer architecture with its Nx1 combiner replaced by a NxN optical DFT network. The proposed circuit architecture can be used for SSB modulation, frequency up-conversion/down-conversion, frequency multiplication and phase correlated subcarrier generation based on the choice of output ports and dimension (N) of the circuit. An alternative representation of the circuit is also reported with the aim of a systematic demultiplexing. A transfer matrix approach is used to deve…
We demonstrate photonic quantum circuits that operate at the stringent levels that will be required for future quantum information science and technology. These circuits are fabricated from silica-on-silicon waveguides forming directional couplers and interferometers. While our focus is on the operation of quantum circuits, to test this operation required construction of a spectrally tuned photon source to produce near-identical pairs of photons. We show non-classical interference with two photons and a two-photon entangling logic gate that operate with near-unit fidelity. These results are a …

Therefore the cost per chip can be dramatically reduced because of the increase in production volume, and rapid prototyping of new photonic circuits is enabled. Essential …
Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers have revolutionized long-haul optical communications and laser technology. Erbium ions could equally provide a basis for efficient optical amplification in photonic integrated circuits. Here, we demonstrate a photonic integrated circuit based erbium amplifier reaching 145 mW output power and more than 30 dB small-signal gain -- on par with commercial fiber amplifiers and beyond state-of-the-art III-V heterogeneously integrated semiconductor amplifiers. We achieve this by app…
In the article "Nonreciprocal Light Propagation in a Silicon Photonic Circuit" (Science 333, 729-733 (2011) a nonreciprocal waveguide system based on a combination of silicon, dielectrics and metals is reported. In this Comment it is explained that the interpretation with respect to nonreciprocity in this paper is incorrect and conflicts with the fundamental Lorentz reciprocity theorem. It is further pointed out that a previous publication already introduced the device concept.
