Topological media are systems whose properties are protected by topology and thus are robust to deformations of the system. In topological insulators and superconductors the bulk-surface and bulk-vortex correspondence gives rise to the gapless Weyl, Dirac or Majorana fermions on the surface of the system and inside vortex cores. Here we show that in gapless topological media, the bulk-surface and bulk-vortex correspondence is more effective: it produces topologically protected gapless fermions without dispersion -- the flat band. Fermion zero modes forming the flat band are localized on the surface of topological media with protected nodal lines and in the vortex core in systems with topologically protected Fermi points (Weyl points). Flat band has an extremely singular density of states, and we show that this property may give rise in particular to surface superconductivity which could exist even at room temperature.
We discuss the dispersionless spectrum with zero energy in the linear topological defects - vortices. The flat band emerges inside the vortex living in the bulk medium containing topologically stable Fermi points in momentum space. The boundaries of the flat band in the vortex are determined by projections of the Fermi points in bulk to the vortex axis. This bulk-vortex correspondence for flat band is similar to the bulk-surface correspondence discussed earlier in the media with topologically protected lines of zeroes. In the latter case the flat band emerges on the surface of the system, and …

Topological invariants in terms of the Green's function in momentum and real space determine properties of smooth textures within topological media. In space dimension D=1 the topological invariant N_3 in terms of the Green's function G(ω,k_x,x) determines the fermion number of the 1D soliton, while in space dimension D=3 the topological invariant N_5 in terms of the Green's function G(ω,k_x,k_y,k_z,z) determines quantization of Hall conductivity in the soliton plane within the topological insulators.
We consider the dimensional crossover in the topological matter, which involves the transformation of different types of topologically protected zeroes in the fermionic spectrum. In the considered case, the multiple Dirac (Fermi) point in quasi 2-dimensional system evolves into the flat band on the surface of the 3-dimensional system when the number of atomic layers increases. This is accompanied by formation of the spiral nodal lines in the bulk. We also discuss the topological quantum phase transition at which the surface flat band shrinks and changes its chirality, while the nodal spiral ch…
Electronic flat bands represent a paradigmatic platform to realize strongly correlated matter due to their associated divergent density of states. In common instances, including electron-electron interactions leads to magnetic instabilities for repulsive interactions and superconductivity for attractive interactions. Nevertheless, interactions of Kondo nature in flat band systems have remained relatively unexplored. Here we address the emergence of interacting states mediated by Kondo lattice coupled to a flat band system. Combining dynamical mean-field theory and tensor networks methods to so…
Recently, two-dimensional band insulators with a topologically nontrivial (almost) flat band has been studied extensively, which can realize integer and fractional quantum Hall effect in a system without an orbital magnetic field. Realizing a topological flat band generally requires longer range hoppings in a lattice Hamiltonian. It is natural to ask what is the minimal hopping range required.% for a topological flat-band Hamiltonian. In this paper, we prove that the mean hopping range of the flat-band Hamiltonian with Chern number $C_1$ and total number of bands $N$ has a universal lower boun…
On the basis of the "molecular-orbital" representation which describes generic flat-band models, we propose a systematic way to construct a class of flat-band models with finite-range hoppings that have topological natures. In these models, the topological natures are encoded not into the flat band itself but into the dispersive bands touching the flat band. Such a band structure may become a source of exotic phenomena arising from the combination of flat bands, topology and correlations.
We introduce and study two classes of Hubbard models with magnetic flux or with spin-orbit coupling, which have a flat lowest band separated from other bands by a nonzero gap. We study the Chern number of the flat bands, and find that it is zero for the first class but can be nontrivial in the second. We also prove that the introduction of on-site Coulomb repulsion leads to ferromagnetism in both the classes.
In this paper, based on the mean field approach and random-phase-approximation, we study the magnetic properties of the spinful Haldane model on honeycomb lattice of topological flat band with on-site repulsive Coulomb interaction. We find that the antiferromagnetic (AF) order is more stable than ferromagnetic (FM) order at (or near) half-filling; while away from half-filling the phase diagram becomes complex: At large doping, FM order is more stable than AF order due to the flatness of band structure. In particular, we find that at quarter filling case, the system becomes a Q=1$ topological i…
Topological flat bands, such as the band in twisted bilayer graphene, are becoming a promising platform to study topics such as correlation physics, superconductivity, and transport. In this work, we introduce a generic approach to construct two-dimensional (2D) topological quasi-flat bands from line graphs and split graphs of bipartite lattices. A line graph or split graph of a bipartite lattice exhibits a set of flat bands and a set of dispersive bands. The flat band connects to the dispersive bands through a degenerate state at some momentum. We find that, with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), th…
We perform an exact diagonalization study of the topological order in topological flat band models through calculating entanglement entropy and spectra of low energy states. We identify multiple independent minimal entangled states, which form a set of orthogonal basis states for the ground-state manifold. We extract the modular transformation matrices S (U) which contains the information of mutual (self) statistics, quantum dimensions and fusion rule of quasi-particles. Moreover, we demonstrate that these matrices are robust and universal in the whole topological phase against different pertu…
In this paper, we study the effects of attractive correlation on the topological insulator ($TI$) with topological flat-bands using an extended attractive Kane-Mele-Hubbard model (KMHM). In the KMHM, we found a quantum phase transition from $TI$ to the superconductor ($SC$) state upon the increasing of the attractive Hubbard interaction $U$ at the mean field level. This type of $SC$ phase transition is different from the traditional $SC$ phase transition which develops from the gapless Fermi Liquid. Cooperon-type gapped excitations exist in the $TI$ side near this type of $SC$ phase transition…

We elaborate the first theoretical realization of two dimensional itinerant topological magnons, based on the quarter filled Haldane-Hubbard model with a nearly-flat electron band. By using the exact diagonalization method with a projection onto this band, we obtain the spin wave excitations over the itinerant ferromagnetic ground state. In the flatband limit, the excitation exhibits similar dispersion to the free electron band with Dirac magnons. The nonflatness of the electron band opens a topological gap at Dirac points and leads to an acoustic magnon band with a nonzero Chern number. We fu…
We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of a topological Hubbard model within a bosonization formalism and, in particular, determine the spin-wave excitation spectrum. We consider a square lattice Hubbard model at 1/4-filling whose free-electron term is the π-flux model with topologically nontrivial and nearly flat energy bands. The electron spin is introduced such that the model either explicitly breaks time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band Chern insulator) or is invariant under time-reversal symmetry (correlated flat-band $Z_2$ topological insulator). We generalize for flat-band Ch…
We construct and characterize tight binding Hamiltonians which contain a completely flat topological band made of continuum lowest Landau level wavefunctions sampled on a lattice. We find an infinite family of such Hamiltonians, with simple analytic descriptions. These provide a valuable tool for constructing exactly solvable models. We also implement a numerical algorithm for finding the most local Hamiltonian with a flat Landau level. We find intriguing structures in the spatial dependence of the matrix elements for this optimized model. The models we construct serve as foundations for numer…
We propose a tunable optical setup to engineer topologically nontrivial flat bands in twisted bilayer graphene under circularly polarized light. Using both analytical and numerical calculations, we demonstrate that nearly flat bands can be engineered at small twist angles near the magic angles of the static system. The flatness and the gaps between these bands can be tuned optically by varying laser frequency and amplitude. We study the effects of interlayer hopping variations on Floquet flat bands and find that lattice relaxation favors their formation. Furthermore, we find that, once formed,…
Flat bands and dispersive Dirac bands are known to coexist in the electronic bands in a two-dimensional kagome lattice. Including the relativistic spin-orbit coupling, such systems often exhibit nontrivial band topology, allowing for gapless edge modes between flat bands at several locations in the band structure, and dispersive bands or at the Dirac band crossing. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that a multiorbital system on a kagome lattice is a versatile platform to explore the interplay between nontrivial band topology and electronic interaction. Specifically, here we report that the mu…
We study the many-body ground states of SU($N$) symmetric hardcore bosons on the topological flat-band model by using controlled numerical calculations. By introducing strong intracomponent and intercomponent interactions, we demonstrate that a hierarchy of bosonic SU($N$) fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states emerges at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(MN+1)$ (odd $M=3$). In order to characterize this series of FQH states, we figure the effective $\mathbf{K}$ matrix from the inverse of the Chern number matrix. The topological characterization of the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix also reveals quantized d…
A topological flatband, also known as drumhead states, is an ideal platform to drive new exotic topological quantum phases. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we reveal the emergence of a highly localized possible drumhead surface state in a topological semimetal BaAl4 and provide its full energy and momentum space topology. We find that the observed surface state is highly localized in momentum, inside a square-shaped bulk Dirac nodal loop, and in energy, leading to a flat band and a peak in the density of state. These results establish this class of materials as a p…
We present exact results that give insight into how interactions lead to transport and superconductivity in a flat band where the electrons have no kinetic energy. We obtain bounds for the optical spectral weight for flat band superconductors, that lead to upper bounds for the superfluid stiffness and the 2D $T_c$. We focus on on-site attraction $|U|$ on the Lieb lattice with trivial flat bands and on the $π$-flux model with topological flat bands. For trivial flat bands, the low-energy optical spectral weight $\widetilde{D}_\text{low} \leq \widetilde{n} |U| Ω/2$ with $\widetilde{n} = \min\lef…
Different from previous scenarios that topological magnons emerge in local spin models, we propose an alternative that itinerant electron magnets can host topological magnons. A one-dimensional Tasaki model with a flat band is considered as the prototype. This model can be viewed as a quarter filled periodic Anderson model with impurities located in between and hybridizing with the nearest-neighbor conducting electrons, together with a Hubbard repulsion for these electrons. By increasing the Hubbard interaction, the gap between the acoustic and optical magnons closes and reopens while the Berr…
We demonstrate a generic mechanism to realize topological flat minibands by confining massive Dirac fermions in a periodic moiré potential, which can be achieved in a heterobilayer of transition metal dichalcogenides. We show that the topological phase can be protected by the symmetry of moiré potential and survive to arbitrarily large Dirac band gap. We take the MoTe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterobilayer as an example and find that the topological phase can be driven by a vertical electric field. By projecting the Coulomb interaction onto the topological fat minibands, we identify a correlated Chern insu…
Exotic phases of matter emerge from the interplay between strong electron interactions and non-trivial topology. Owing to their lack of dispersion at the single-particle level, systems harboring flat bands are excellent testbeds for strongly interacting physics, with twisted bilayer graphene serving as a prime example. On the other hand, existing theoretical models for obtaining flat bands in crystalline materials, such as the line-graph formalism, are often too restrictive for real-life material realizations. Here we present a generic technique for constructing perfectly flat bands from bipar…
We study the Wigner crystallization on partially filled topological flat bands. We identify the Wigner crystals by analyzing the cartesian and angular Fourier transform of the pair correlation density of the many-body ground state obtained using exact diagonalization. The crystallization strength measured by the magnitude of the Fourier peaks, increases with decreasing particle density. The shape of the resulting Wigner crystals is determined by the boundary conditions of the chosen plaquette and to a large extent independent on the underlying lattice, including its topology, and follows the b…
The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model describes a one-dimensional $Z_{2}$ topological insulator, which has two topological distinct phases corresponding to two different dimerizations. When spin-orbit coupling is introduced into the SSH model, we find the structure of the Bloch bands can be greatly changed, and most interestingly, a new topological phase with single zero-energy bound state which exhibits non-Abelian statistics at each end emerges, which suggests that a new topological invariant is needed to fully classify all phases. In a comparatively large range of parameters, we find that sp…
We present a pedagogical review of the physics of fractional Chern insulators with a particular focus on the connection to the fractional quantum Hall effect. While the latter conventionally arises in semiconductor heterostructures at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields, interacting Chern insulators at fractional band filling may host phases with the same topological properties, but stabilized at the lattice scale, potentially leading to high-temperature topological order. We discuss the construction of topological flat band models, provide a survey of numerical results, and establish…
Electronic flat bands in momentum space, arising from strong localization of electrons in real space, are an ideal stage to realize strong correlation phenomena. In certain lattices with built-in geometrical frustration, electronic confinement and flat bands can naturally arise from the destructive interference of electronic hopping pathways. Such lattice-borne flat bands are often endowed with nontrivial topology if combined with spin-orbit coupling, while their experimental realization in condensed matter system has been elusive so far. Here, we report the direct observation of topological f…
Monolayer graphene placed with a twist on top of AB-stacked bilayer graphene hosts topological flat bands in a wide range of twist angles. The dispersion of these bands and gaps between them can be efficiently controlled by a perpendicular electric field, which induces topological transitions accompanied by changes of the Chern numbers. In the regime where the applied electric field induces gaps between the flat bands, we find a relatively uniform distribution of the Berry curvature. Consequently, interaction-induced valley- and/or spin-polarized states at integer filling factors are energetic…
We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with SU$(N)$-invariant interactions based on density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of SU$(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(N+1)$ for bosons ($ν=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions) in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characte…
The effects of downfolding a Brillouin zone can open gaps and quench the kinetic energy by flattening bands. Quasiperiodic systems are extreme examples of this process, which leads to new phases and critical eigenstates. We analytically and numerically investigate these effects in a two dimensional topological insulator with a quasiperiodic potential and discover a complex phase diagram. We study the nature of the resulting eigenstate quantum phase transitions; a quasiperiodic potential can make a trivial insulator topological and induce topological insulator-to-metal phase transitions through…

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated various robust Abelian and non-Abelian fractional topological phases in lattice models with topological flat bands carrying Chern number C=1. Here we study hard-core bosons and interacting fermions in a three-band triangular-lattice model with the lowest topological flat band of Chern number C=2. We find convincing numerical evidence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect at the $ν=1/3$ filling characterized by three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a fractional Chern number for each ground state, a robust spectrum gap, and a gap …
In this work, we investigate effects of weak interactions on a bosonic complete flat-band system. By employing a band projection method, the flat-band Hamiltonian with weak interactions is mapped to an effective Hamiltonian. The effective Hamiltonian indicates that doublons behave as well-defined quasi-particles, which acquire itinerancy through the hopping induced by interactions. When we focus on a two-particle system, from the effective Hamiltonian, an effective subspace spanned only by doublon bases emerges. The effective subspace induces spreading of a single doublon and we find an intere…
We present the appearance of nearly flat band states with nonzero Chern numbers in a two-dimensional "diamond-octagon" lattice model comprising two kinds of elementary plaquette geometries, diamond and octagon, respectively. We show that the origin of such nontrivial topological nearly flat bands can be described by a short-ranged tight-binding Hamiltonian. By considering an additional diagonal hopping parameter in the diamond plaquettes along with an externally fine-tuned magnetic flux, it leads to the emergence of such nearly flat band states with nonzero Chern numbers for our simple lattice…
We propose and analyze a physical system that naturally admits two-dimensional topological nearly flat bands. Our approach utilizes an array of three-level dipoles (effective S = 1 spins) driven by inhomogeneous electromagnetic fields. The dipolar interactions produce arbitrary uniform background gauge fields for an effective collection of conserved hardcore bosons, namely, the dressed spin-flips. These gauge fields result in topological band structures, whose bandgap can be larger than the corresponding bandwidth. Exact diagonalization of the full interacting Hamiltonian at half-filling revea…
Topological crystalline insulators in IV-VI compounds host novel topological surface states consisting of multi-valley massless Dirac fermions at low energy. Here we show that strain generically acts as an effective gauge field on these Dirac fermions and creates pseudo-Landau orbitals without breaking time-reversal symmetry. We predict the realization of this phenomenon in IV-VI semiconductor heterostructures, due to a naturally occurring misfit dislocation array at the interface that produces a periodically varying strain field. Remarkably, the zero-energy Landau orbitals form a flat band in…
Inspired by recent theoretical discovery of robust fractional topological phases without a magnetic field, we search for the non-Abelian quantum Hall effect (NA-QHE) in lattice models with topological flat bands (TFBs). Through extensive numerical studies on the Haldane model with three-body hard-core bosons loaded into a TFB, we find convincing numerical evidence of a stable $ν=1$ bosonic NA-QHE, with the characteristic three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a quantized Chern number, and a robust spectrum gap. Moreover, the spectrum for two-quasihole states also shows a fini…
