The production of W+ W- b bbar from e+ e- collisions at energies close to the t tbar threshold is dominated by the resonant process with a nearly on-shell t tbar intermediate state. The W b pairs in the final state can also be reached through the decay of off-shell tops or through background processes containing no or only single top quarks. This non-resonant production starts to contribute at NLO to the W+ W- b bbar total cross section in the non-relativistic power-counting v ~ alpha_s ~ sqrt(alpha_EW). The NLO non-resonant corrections presented in this talk represent the non-trivial NLO electroweak corrections to the e+ e- -> W+ W- b bbar cross section in the top anti-top resonance region. In contrast to the QCD corrections which have been calculated (almost) up to NNNLO, the parametrically larger NLO electroweak contributions have not been completely known so far, but are mandatory for the required accuracy at a future linear collider. We consider the total cross section of the e+ e- -> W+ W- b bbar process and additionally implement cuts on the invariant masses of the W+ b and W- bbar pairs.
We determine the NNLO electroweak correction to the $e^+ e^-\to b\bar{b}W^+W^- X$ production cross section near the top-pair production threshold. The calculation includes non-resonant production of the final state as well as electroweak effects in resonant top anti-top pair production with non-relativistic resummation, and elevates the theoretical prediction to NNNLO QCD plus NNLO electroweak accuracy. We then study the impact of the new contributions on the top-pair threshold scan at a future lepton collider.
We study resonant leptogenesis at the electroweak phase transition in the singlet Majoron model with right-handed neutrinos. We consider a scenario, where the SM gauge group and the lepton number break down spontaneously during a second-order electroweak phase transition. We calculate the flavour- and temperature-dependent leptonic asymmetries, by including the novel contributions from the transverse polarisations of the W+/- and Z bosons. The required resummation of the gauge-dependent off-shell heavy-neutrino self-energies is consistently treated within the gauge-invariant framework of the P…
The top-quark mass can be determined with very high precision from a scan of the total $e^+e^-\to b\bar{b}W^+W^-X$ cross section near the top-pair production threshold. We present the full calculation of electroweak and non-resonant corrections to this process at NNLO. We discuss the size of the new contributions and estimate the theory uncertainty on the top-quark mass in the PS mass scheme.
The electroweak O(alpha) contribution to the resonant single W production in a general 4-fermion process is discussed with particular emphasis on a gauge invariant decomposition into a QED-like and weak part. The cross section in the vicinity of the resonance can be represented in terms of a convolution of a `hard' Breit-Wigner-cross section, comprising the (m_t,M_H)-dependent weak 1-loop corrections, with an universal radiator function. The numerical impact of the various contributions on the W line shape are discussed, together with the concepts of s-dependent and constant width approach. An…
We analyse subleading electroweak effects in the top anti-top resonance production region in e+ e- collisions which arise due to the decay of the top and anti-top quarks into the W+ W- b bbar final state. These are NLO corrections adopting the non-relativistic power counting v ~ alpha_s ~ sqrt(alpha_EW). In contrast to the QCD corrections which have been calculated (almost) up to NNNLO, the parametrically larger NLO electroweak contributions have not been completely known so far, but are mandatory for the required accuracy at a future linear collider. The missing parts of these NLO contributio…
We study minimal scenarios of resonant leptogenesis near the electroweak phase transition. These models offer a number of testable phenomenological signatures for low-energy experiments and future high-energy colliders. Our study extends previous analyses of the relevant network of Boltzmann equations, consistently taking into account effects from out of equilibrium sphalerons and single lepton flavours. We show that the effects from single lepton flavours become very important in variants of resonant leptogenesis, where the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe is created by lepton-to-bar…
Electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) in extensions of the Standard Model will be tested quantitatively in upcoming nuclear and particle physics experiments, but only to the extent that theoretical computations are robust. Currently there exist orders-of-magnitude discrepancies between treatments of charge transport dynamics during EWBG performed by different groups, each relying on different sets of approximations. In this work, we introduce a consistent power counting scheme (in ratios of length scales) for treating systematically the dynamics of EWBG: CP-asymmetric flavor oscillations, collisions…
We compute the leading, chiral charge-changing relaxation term in the quantum transport equations that govern electroweak baryogenesis using the closed time path formulation of non-equilibrium quantum field theory. We show that the relaxation transport coefficients may be resonantly enhanced under appropriate conditions on electroweak model parameters and that such enhancements can mitigate the impact of similar enhancements in the CP-violating source terms. We also develop a power counting in the time and energy scales entering electroweak baryogenesis and include effects through second order…
We analyze the collider signatures of the real singlet extension of the Standard Model in regions consistent with a strong first-order electroweak phase transition and a singlet-like scalar heavier than the Standard Model-like Higgs. A definitive correlation exists between the strength of the phase transition and the trilinear coupling of the Higgs to two singlet-like scalars, and hence between the phase transition and non-resonant scalar pair production involving the singlet at colliders. We study the prospects for observing these processes at the LHC and a future 100 TeV $pp$ collider, focus…
Probing Electroweak Phase Transition in Extended Singlet Scalar Model with Resonant $HH$ production in $bbZZ$ Channel using Parameterized Machine Learning
We explore viable scenarios for parametric resonant amplification of electroweak (EW) gauge fields and Chern-Simons number during preheating, leading to baryogenesis at the electroweak (EW) scale. In this class of scenarios time-dependent classical EW gauge fields, essentially spatially-homogeneous on the horizon scales, carry Chern-Simons number which can be amplified by parametric resonance up to magnitudes at which unsuppressed topological transitions in the Higgs sector become possible. Baryon number non-conservation associated with the gauge sector and the highly non-equilibrium nature of…
We analyze the prospects for resonant di-Higgs production searches at the LHC in the $b\bar{b} W^+ W^-$ ($W^{+} \to \ell^{+} ν_{\ell}$, $W^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell}$) channel, as a probe of the nature of the electroweak phase transition in Higgs portal extensions of the Standard Model. In order to maximize the sensitivity in this final state, we develop a new algorithm for the reconstruction of the $b \bar{b} W^+ W^-$ invariant mass in the presence of neutrinos from the $W$ decays, building from a technique developed for the reconstruction of resonances decaying to $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ pairs. We s…
We study the enhancement of the di-Higgs production cross section resulting from the resonant decay of a heavy Higgs boson at hadron colliders in a model with a Higgs singlet. This enhancement of the double Higgs production rate is crucial in understanding the structure of the scalar potential and we determine the maximum allowed enhancement such that the electroweak minimum is a global minimum. The di-Higgs production enhancement can be as large as a factor of ~ 18 (13) for the mass of the heavy Higgs around 270 (420) GeV relative to the Standard Model rate at 14 TeV for parameters correspond…
We investigate the prospective reach of the 14 TeV HL-LHC for resonant production of a heavy Higgs boson that decays to two SM-like Higgs bosons in the $4b$ final state in the scalar singlet extended Standard Model. We focus on the reach for choices of parameters yielding a strong first order electroweak phase transition. The event selection follows the $4b$ analysis by the ATLAS Collaboration, enhanced with the use of a boosted decision tree method to optimize the discrimination between signal and background events. The output of the multivariate discriminant is used directly in the statistic…
We calculate the baryon asymmetry produced at the electroweak phase transition by quasi-degenerate third generation sfermions in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. We evaluate constraints from Higgs searches, from collider searches for supersymmetric particles, and from null searches for the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron, of the neutron and of atoms. We find that resonant sfermion sources can in principle provide a large enough baryon asymmetry in various corners of the sfermion parameter space, and we focus, in particular, on the case of large…
Motivated by the scenario of resonant leptogenesis in which lepton number creation in the electroweak-scale is relevant, we investigate the spectral properties and possible collective nature of the standard model neutrinos at electroweak scale temperature (T). We adopt the R_xi gauge fixing, which includes the unitary gauge as a limiting case, and allows us to study the broken as well as the restored phases of the gauge symmetry in a unified way. We show that the spectral density of the neutrino has a three-peak structure in the low-momentum region due to the scattering with the thermally exci…
With the recent discovery of a heavy top quark $(m_t \approx 175 - 200$ GeV), the top quark opens an window to electroweak symmetry breaking. We propose the study of four-top, $t\bar t t\bar t$, production at hadronic supercolliders as a probe to electroweak symmetry breaking.
Near a critical value of the wino mass where there is a zero-energy S-wave resonance at the neutral-wino-pair threshold, low-energy winos can be described by a zero-range effective field theory (ZREFT) in which the winos interact nonperturbatively through a contact interaction and through Coulomb interactions. The effects of wino-pair annihilation into electroweak gauge bosons are taken into account through the analytic continuation of the real parameters for the contact interaction to complex values. The parameters of ZREFT can be determined by matching wino-wino scattering amplitudes calcula…
The role of the top quark in the Standard Model predictions for electroweak precision observables is reviewed and the implications of the experimental data for the indirect determination of the top mass range is discussed.
In this talk I discuss theories of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, with emphasis on the implications of a heavy top-quark on the weak-interaction $ρ$ parameter.
We calculate the typical size of loop corrections to electroweak observables arising from non-standard $Z {\overline t } t$ and $W t b$ vertices. We use an effective Lagrangian formalism based on the electroweak gauge group $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y \rightarrow U(1)_{EM}$. Limits on the non-standard model top quark couplings from electroweak observables are presented and compared with previously obtained limits.
Electroweak vacuum transition processes (sphalerons) in the early Universe provide a possible explanation of the baryon asymmetry. Anomaly theory suggests that these electroweak baryon number non-conserving processes are accompanied by the formation of a ``topological condensate'' which may remain in the Universe that we observe today.
The $αm_t^2/m_W^2$ order supersymmetric electroweak corrections arising from loops of chargino, neutralino, and squark to top quark pair production by $gg$ fusion at LHC are calculated in the minimal supersymmetric model. We found that the corrections amount about a few percent.
Severe constraints on parameters of the minimal supersymmetric standard model follow from a dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism dominated by top and stop loops. In particular, the lightest Higgs boson mass is expected to be smaller than 100 GeV.
Baryon asymmetry can be generated at the first order electroweak phase transition, provided there is a CP violation on the bubble wall. In this report we discuss the role of leptons and quarks in the `non-local' baryogenesis mechanism.
We review the status of electroweak radiative corrections to top-pair production at a Linear Collider well above the production threshold. We describe the Fortran package topfit and present numerical results at sqrt(s) = 500 GeV, 1 TeV, and 3 TeV.
We analyze the pair-production of top quarks in polarized $e^+e^-$ scattering in the presence of electroweak dipole moments. For this, we consider two $CP$-odd observables which probe both the real and the imaginary parts of these moments. Polarizing the electron beam turns out to be a main asset.
Partial top quark compositeness is a crucial aspect of theories with strong electroweak symmetry breaking. Together with the heavy top partners that lift the top quark mass to its observed value, these theories predict correlated modifications of the top quark's electroweak couplings. Associated measurements therefore provide direct constraints on the ultraviolet structure of the underlying hypercolour dynamics. In this paper we employ a minimal version of top compositeness to discuss how measurements related to the top's electroweak gauge interactions can inform the potential composite nature…
We calculate the leading-logarithmic and next-to-leading-logarithmic electroweak corrections to the charm-top-quark contribution to the effective $|ΔS| = 2$ Lagrangian, relevant for the parameter $ε_K$. We find that these corrections lead to a $-0.5\%$ shift in the corresponding Wilson coefficient. Moreover, our calculation removes an implicit ambiguity in the standard-model prediction of $ε_K$, by fixing the renormalization scheme of the electroweak input parameters.
`Little Higgs' models, in which the Higgs particle arises as a pseudo-Goldstone boson, have a natural mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking associated with the large value of the top quark Yukawa coupling. The mechanism typically involves a new heavy SU(2)_{L} singlet top quark, T. We discuss the relationship of the Higgs boson and the two top quarks. We suggest experimental tests of the Little Higgs mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking using the production and decay of the T at the Large Hadron Collider.
We construct and analyze an ultraviolet extension of a model in which electroweak symmetry breaking is due to both technifermion and top-quark condensates. The model includes dynamical mechanisms for all of the various gauge symmetry breakings. We discuss certain aspects in which it requires additional ingredients to be more realistic.
We determine the real parts of electroweak matching conditions relevant for top quark pair production close to threshold in e+e- annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) order. Numerically the corrections are comparable to the NNLL QCD corrections.
Using precision electroweak data, we put limits on ``natural'' top-color assisted technicolor models. Generically the new $U(1)$ gauge bosons in these models must have masses larger than roughly 2 TeV, although in certain (seemingly unrealistic) models the bound can be much lower.
The International Linear Collider (ILC) will be able to precisely measure the electroweak couplings of the top in e+e- -> tt~. We compare the limits which can be achieved at the ILC with those which can be obtained in tt~gamma$ and tt~Z production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
The agreement of electroweak measurements with theory places limits on the masses of the top quark and the $W$ boson. It is shown how these limits arise and what constraints various measurements (particularly a top quark mass determination) would provide on the theory. The degree to which present and future measurements can constrain the Higgs boson mass is examined.
I present results from recent high-order calculations for the production of electroweak bosons and top quarks. In particular, I discuss $W$ and $Z$ boson production at large transverse momentum, single-top production, and FCNC top production. Theoretical predictions which include higher-order soft-gluon corrections are presented for total cross sections and differential distributions at the LHC.
We have calculated the $O(α_{ew} M_t^2/M_W^2)$ supersymmetric electroweak corrections to single top quark production via $q\bar q' \to t\bar b$ at the Fermilab Tevatron in the minimal supersymmetric model. The supersymmetric electroweak corrections to the cross section are a few percent for $tan β> 1$, and can exceed 10% for $tanβ<1$. The combined effects of SUSY electroweak corrections and the Yukawa corrections can exceed 10% for favorable parameter values, which might be observable at a high-luminosity Tevatron.
We briefly discuss five topics in Precision Electroweak Physics: i) the recently proposed Effective Scheme of Renormalization, ii) evidence for electroweak bosonic corrections derived from the radiative correction Delta_r_eff, iii) an approach to estimate the scale of new physics in a hypothetical Higgs-less scenario, iv) simple and accurate formulae for s^2_eff, M_W, Gamma_l, and their physical applications, v) a recent proposal concerning the field renormalization constant for unstable particles.
We study the combined effects of both strong and electroweak dimension six effective operators on flavour changing top quark physics at the LHC. Analytic expressions for the cross sections and decay widths of several flavour changing processes will be presented, as well as an analysis of the feasibility of their observation at the LHC.
After a brief comment on the role of top quark in models of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB), I shall discuss what we know about top quark interaction and how to improve that knowledge. Since bottom quark is the weak isospin partner of the top quark, its interaction with a scalar boson may also distinguish models of EWSB. We show that Tevatron can provide useful information through the associated production of a scalar with a bottom quark pair.
We propose a new mechanism in which all of the electroweak symmetry breaking is driven by a natural top quark condensate, produced by topcolor interactions at a multi-TeV scale. The scheme allows the observed top quark mass, and acceptable T and S parameters, by invoking a seesaw mechanism involving mixing of the top with an additional isosinglet quark.
The origin of the baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU) is a longstanding problem in the high energy physics. The electroweak baryogenesis mechanism, which generates the BAU during the first order electroweak phase transition, provides a testable solution to this problem. In this paper we revisit the top-assisted electroweak baryogenesis model, which extends the standard model (SM) with only one scalar singlet. Constraints on the new CP-violating coupling as well as the mixing between the SM Higgs and the new scalar singlet are derived by considering the latest result of ACME and oblique obse…
General formulas as well as leading asymptotics for corrections to Z- and W-boson parameters are derived. Experimental data fits in Standard Model and its extensions are discussed and results are presented.
Presented are complete next-to-leading order electroweak (NLO EW) corrections to top-squark pair production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). At this order, also effects from the interference of EW and QCD contributions have to be taken into account. Moreover, photon-induced top-squark production is considered as an additional partonic channel, which arises from the non-zero photon density in the proton.
Top-quark physics plays an important role at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron at Fermilab or the LHC at CERN. Given the planned precision at these colliders, precise theoretical predictions are required. In this paper we present the complete electroweak corrections to QCD-induced top-quark pair production in quark--antiquark annihilation. In particular we provide compact analytic expressions for the differential partonic cross section, which will be useful for further theoretical investigations.
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors, due a crucial error in the Montecarlo simulation. See hep-ph/0107112 for a correct version. If interested in the validity of the effective-W approximation see hep-ph/0109059.
We perform a complementarity study of gravitational waves and colliders in the context of electroweak phase transitions choosing as our template the xSM model, which consists of the Standard Model augmented by a real scalar. We carefully analyze the gravitational wave signal at benchmark points compatible with a first order phase transition, taking into account subtle issues pertaining to the bubble wall velocity and the hydrodynamics of the plasma. In particular, we comment on the tension between requiring bubble wall velocities small enough to produce a net baryon number through the sphalero…
The parameter $ε_K$ measures $CP$ violation in the neutral kaon system. It is a sensitive probe of new physics and plays a prominent role in the global fit of the Cabibbo-Kobabyashi-Maskawa matrix. The perturbative theory uncertainty is currently dominated by the top-quark contribution. Here, we present the calculation of the full two-loop electroweak corrections to the top-quark contribution to $ε_K$, including the resummation of QED-QCD logarithms. We discuss different renormalization prescriptions for the electroweak input parameters. In the traditional normalization of the weak Hamiltonian…
We calculate the electroweak and finite width corrections to the decay of an unpolarized top quark into a bottom quark and a $ W $-gauge boson where the helicities of the $ W $ are specified as longitudinal, transverse-plus and transverse-minus. Together with the $ O(α_s) $ corrections these corrections may become relevant for the determination of the mass of the top quark through angular decay measurements.
We calculate the electroweak and QCD corrections to W-W+ -> tt and ZZ -> tt. We also consider the interplay of these corrections with the effect of anomalous interactions that affect the massive weak bosons and the top. The results at the VV level fusion are convoluted with the help of the effective vector boson approximation to give predictions for a high energy e+e- collider.
Top quark production in electron-positron annihilation is one of the benchmark reactions at a future linear collider. Both electroweak and QCD corrections are large, amounting to 10% or even more in specific kinematic regions. In this note we present a method which allows to combine the dominant terms from both sources, thus improving considerably the result based on a simple addition of both corrections.
The effect of virtual electroweak corrections to $e^+e^- \rightarrow t \bar{t}$ and the contribution of the radiation processes $e^+e^- \rightarrow t\bar{t}Z, t\bar{t}H$ to the inclusive top pair production cross section and forward-backward asymmetry are discussed in the high energy regime.
The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) provides a powerful theoretical framework for searching for subtle deviations from the Standard Model. In this talk, we present the results from a global fit of the dimension-6 operators of the SMEFT to a combination of Higgs, top, diboson and electroweak precision observables. SMEFT constraints driven by data from the top quark sector are highlighted. We explore the interplay between the top and Higgs sectors, emphasising the need for a global approach to constraining the SMEFT.
Taking into account the mixing effects between left- and right-handed top-squarks, we calculate the genuine supersymmetric eletroweak correction to top quark production at the Tevatron in the minimal supersymmetric model. The analytic expressions of the corrections to both the parton level cross section and the total hadronic cross section are presented. Some numerical examples are also given to show the size of the corrections.
We have calculated the one-loop electroweak corrections to the decay t-> bW+, including the counterterm for the CKM matrix elements V(tb). Previous calculations used an incorrect delta V(tb) that led to a gauge dependent amplitude. However, since the contribution stemming from delta V(tb) is small, those calculations only underestimate the width by roughly one part in 10^5.
The top quark may get its mass not from a fundamental scalar but a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio mechanism involving a strongly coupled gauge sector that triggers top-quark condensation. Forbidding a large hierarchy in the gap equation implies that top-quark condensation is a spectator to electroweak symmetry breaking, which must be accomplished mainly by another sector. The properties of the electroweak symmetry breaking scalars are identified. Production mechanisms and decay modes are studied. Unlike the standard model, the scalar degree of freedom most relevant to electroweak symmetry breaking can onl…
Top-quark physics plays an important role at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron collider at Fermilab or the upcoming Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Given the planned experimental precision, detailed theoretical predictions are mandatory. In this article we present analytic results for the complete electroweak corrections to gluon induced top-quark pair production, completing our earlier results for the quark-induced reaction. As an application we discuss top-quark pair production at Tevatron and at LHC. In particular we show that, although small for inclusive quantities, weak correcti…
We discuss one-loop electroweak corrections to the decay width of toponium. We calculate the energy-level shifts by expanding around the solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the instantaneous approximation, in analogy with the positronium case. We show that first-order electroweak effects are suppressed by at least four powers of the strong coupling constant, and are therefore negligible compared with QCD corrections. The calculation is manifestly gauge invariant and takes into account the contributions to the decay rate due to both Coulomb enhancement and phase space reduction effects.
