We construct and analyze an ultraviolet extension of a model in which electroweak symmetry breaking is due to both technifermion and top-quark condensates. The model includes dynamical mechanisms for all of the various gauge symmetry breakings. We discuss certain aspects in which it requires additional ingredients to be more realistic.
We discuss the selection of fermion representations in technicolor models with a view toward minimizing technicolor contributions to the precision electroweak $S$ parameter. We present and analyze models that involve one technifermion SU(2)$_L$ doublet with standard-model singlet technifermion sectors that lead to walking behavior, which further reduces $S$. We also consider models that have technifermions in higher-dimensional representations and study embeddings in extended technicolor theories.
We study technicolor models in which all of the technifermions are color-singlets, focusing on the case in these fermions transform according to the fundamental representation of the technicolor gauge group. Our analysis includes a derivation of restrictions on the weak hypercharge assignments for the technifermions and additional color-singlet, technisinglet fermions arising from the necessity of avoiding stable bound states with exotic electric charges. Precision electroweak constraints on these models are also discussed. We determine some general properties of extended technicolor theories …
We propose a scenario of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking which is applicable to the model with no tree-level potential for the elementary Higgs doublet field. An example of such a model is the gauge-Higgs unification model. The strong coupling "technicolor" dynamics can provide the scale of the electroweak symmetry breaking in the potential of the Higgs doublet field. The negative mass squared and quartic coupling can be generated through the Yukawa couplings among heavy and light "technifermions" and the Higgs doublet field. Since the massless "technifermion" is singlet under the elec…
We consider Poincare gravity coupled in a nonminimal way to spinors. The gravitational action is considered that contains both Palatini and Holst terms. Due to torsion the effective four - fermion interactions appear that may lead to the left - right asymmetry and the condensation of fermions. When the mass parameter entering the mentioned terms of the gravitational action is at a Tev scale the given construction may provide the dynamical Electroweak symmetry breaking. This is achieved via an arrangement of all Standard Model fermions in the left - handed Dirac spinors while the right - handed…
We study the minimal model of conformal technicolor, an SU(2) gauge theory near a strongly coupled conformal fixed point, with conformal symmetry softly broken by technifermion mass terms. Conformal symmetry breaking triggers chiral symmetry breaking in the pattern SU(4) -> Sp(4), which gives rise to a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson that can act as a composite Higgs boson. The top quark is elementary, and the top and electroweak gauge loop contributions to the Higgs mass are cut off entirely by Higgs compositeness. In particular, the model requires no top partners and no "little Higgs" mechanism…
Based on previous studies deriving the chiral Lagrangian for pseudo scalar mesons from the first principle of QCD in the path integral formalism, we derive the electroweak chiral Lagrangian and dynamically compute all its coefficients from the one family technicolor model. The numerical results of the $p^4$ order coefficients obtained in this paper are proportional to the technicolor number $N_{\rm TC}$ and the technifermion number $N_{\rm TF}$, which agrees with the arguments in previous works, and which confirms the reliability of this dynamical computation.
Topcolor-assisted technicolor provides a dynamical explanation for electroweak and flavor symmetry breaking and for the large mass of the top quark without unnatural fine tuning. I briefly review the basics of topcolor-assisted technicolor, including major constraints and a general approach to satisfying them. The main challenge to topcolor-assisted technicolor is to generate the observed mixing between heavy and light generations while breaking the strong topcolor interactions near 1 TeV. I argue that these phenomena, as well as electroweak symmetry breaking, are intimately connected and I pr…
In a gauge theory with SU(5) broken to SU(2)$\times$U(1), the Higgs mass squared receives only logarithmic divergence from all scalar-gauge interactions at one loop. The same pattern of gauge symmetry breaking can be achieved without any scalar fields in a five-dimensional model.
In extensions of the standard model (SM) with d extra dimensions at the TeV scale the virtual exchange of Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the gauge bosons gives contributions that change the SM relations between electroweak observables. These corrections are finite only for d=1; for d\ge 2 the infinite tower of KK modes gives a divergent contribution that has to be regularized introducing a cutoff (the string scale). However, the ultraviolet dependence of the KK effects is completely different if the running of the couplings with the scale is taken into account. We find that for larger d the …
We construct a Technicolor model which provides masses for the electroweak gauge bosons and for all the Standard Model matter fields. Starting from an ultraviolet complete supersymmetric technicolor, we propose a scenario where all elementary scalars, gauginos, and higgsinos are decoupled at an energy scale substantially higher than the electroweak scale, therefore avoiding the little hierarchy problem of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The resulting low energy theory has an SU(3) global symmetry whose breaking to SO(3) leads to electroweak symmetry breaking. We study in detail the …
These two lectures on technicolor and extended technicolor (ETC) were presented at l'Ecole de GIF at LAPP, Annecy-le-Vieux, France, in September 2001. In Lecture I, the motivation and structure of this theory of dynamical breaking of electroweak and flavor symmetries is summarized. The main phenomenological obstacles to this picture--flavor-changing neutral currents, precision electroweak measurements, and the large top-quark mass--are reviewed. Then, their proposed resolutions--walking technicolor and topcolor-assisted technicolor are discussed. In Lecture II, a scenario for CP violation is p…
The one-loop radiative correction in an ultraviolet (UV) complete electroweak (EW) model without a Higgs particle is calculated. The $ρ$ parameter determining the ratio of the charged to neutral currents is derived for the dominant top quark contribution with the result $ρ\sim 1.01$. This result is compared to the radiative correction to $ρ$ in the standard EW model with a Higgs particle. For the favored light Higgs particle mass from global fits to EW data: $114.4\,{\rm GeV} \leq m_H\leq 135\, {\rm GeV}$, the Higgs contribution up to three loops is negligible and the Higgless model is consist…
An electroweak model with running coupling constants described by an energy dependent entire function is utraviolet complete and avoids unitarity violations for energies above 1 TeV. The action contains no physical scalar fields and no Higgs particle and the physical electroweak model fields are local and satisfy microcausality. The $W$ and $Z$ masses are compatible with a symmetry breaking $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y \rightarrow U(1)_{\rm em}$, which retains a massless photon. The vertex couplings possess an energy scale $Λ_W > 1$ TeV predicting scattering amplitudes that can be tested at the LHC.
This paper extends an earlier one describing the Higgs boson $H$ as a light composite scalar in a strong extended technicolor model of electroweak symmetry breaking. The Higgs mass $M_H$ is made much smaller than $Λ_{ETC}$ by tuning the ETC coupling very close to the critical value for electroweak symmetry breaking. The technicolor interaction, neglected in the earlier paper, is considered here. Its weakness relative to extended technicolor is essential to understanding the lightness of $H$ compared to the low-lying spin-one technihadrons. Technicolor cannot be completely ignored, but implemen…
We analyze heavy states from generic ultraviolet completions of the Standard Model in a model-independent way and investigate their implications on the low-energy couplings of the electroweak effective theory. We build a general effective Lagrangian, implementing the electroweak symmetry breaking $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\to SU(2)_{L+R}$ with a non-linear Nambu-Goldstone realization, which couples the known particles to the heavy states. We generalize the formalism developed in previous works~[1,2] to include colored resonances, both of bosonic and fermionic type. We study bosonic heavy states w…
We derive logarithmically enhanced two-loop virtual electroweak corrections for arbitrary fermion-scattering processes at the TeV scale. This extends results previously obtained for massless fermion scattering to processes that involve also bottom and top quarks. The contributions resulting from soft, collinear, and ultraviolet singularities in the complete electroweak Standard Model are explicitly extracted from two-loop diagrams to next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy including all effects associated with symmetry breaking and Yukawa interactions.
Electroweak corrections associated with the instability of the top quark to the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) total top pair threshold cross section in e+e- annihilation are determined. Our method is based on absorptive parts in electroweak matching conditions of the NRQCD operators and the optical theorem. The corrections lead to ultraviolet phase space divergences that have to be renormalized and lead to NLL mixing effects. Numerically, the corrections can amount to several percent and are comparable to the known NNLL QCD corrections.
We study the radiative spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking in the extra dimensions scenarios of the standard model extension proposed by Antoniadis {\it et al}, Dienes {\it et al.} and Pomarol {\it et al.}. In the framework of multi-scale effective theory when viewing from the ultraviolet cutoff scale down to the low energy scale, we find that the effects of Kaluza-Klein excitations of bosons can change the sign of the Higgs mass term of the standard model from positive to negative and therefore trigger the electroweak symmetry breaking at 1.6 (2) TeV or so when the compactification scal…
The non-observation of new particles at the LHC suggests the existence of a mass gap above the electroweak scale. This situation is adequately described through a general electroweak effective theory with the established fields and Standard Model symmetries. Its couplings contain all information about the unknown short-distance dynamics which is accessible at low energies. We consider a generic strongly-coupled scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking, with heavy states above the gap, and analyze the imprints that its lightest bosonic excitations leave on the effective Lagrangian couplings. D…
We show that the S parameter is not finite in theories of electroweak symmetry breaking in a slice of anti--de Sitter five-dimensional space, with the light fermions localized in the ultraviolet. We compute the one-loop contributions to S from the Higgs sector and show that they are logarithmically dependent on the cutoff of the theory. We discuss the renormalization of S, as well as the implications for bounds from electroweak precision measurements on these models. We argue that, although in principle the choice of renormalization condition could eliminate the S parameter constraint, a more …
We study very light dilaton, arising from a scale-invariant ultraviolet theory of the Higgs sector in the standard model of particle physics. Imposing the scale symmetry below the ultraviolet scale of the Higgs sector, we alleviate the fine-tuning problem associated with the Higgs mass. When the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken radiatively à la Coleman-Weinberg, the dilaton develops a vacuum expectation value away from the origin to give an extra contribution to the Higgs potential so that the Higgs mass becomes naturally around the electroweak scale. The ultraviolet scale of the H…
We consider the general chiral effective action which parametrizes the nonlinear realization of the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry with a light Higgs, and compute the one-loop ultraviolet divergences coming from Higgs and electroweak Goldstone fluctuations using the background field method. The renormalization of the divergences is carried out through operators of next-to-leading order in the chiral counting, i.e. of O(p^4). Being of the same order in power counting, the logarithmic corrections linked to these divergences can be as important as the tree-level contributions fr…
By using the GRACE-Loop system, we calculate the full $\mathcal{O}(α)$ electroweak radiative corrections to the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow e^+e^- γ$, which is important for future investigations at the International Linear Collider (ILC). With the GRACE-Loop system, the calculations are checked numerically by three consistency tests: ultraviolet finiteness, infrared finiteness, and gauge-parameter independence. The results show good numerical stability when quadruple precision is used. In the phenomenological results, we find that the electroweak corrections to the total cross section range f…
In this talk electroweak corrections related to the finite top quark lifetime to the total top pair threshold e+e- cross section at NNLL order are discussed. We include the absorptive parts in electroweak matching conditions of the NRQCD operators related to the top decay and use the optical theorem. Gauge invariance is maintained. The corrections lead to ultraviolet phase space divergences and NLL mixing effects. The corrections can amount to several percent and are phenomenologically relevant.
We present a simple microscopic realization of a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNGB) boson Higgs scenario arising from the breaking of $SO(5) \rightarrow SO(4)$. The Higgs constituents are explicitly identified as well as the interactions responsible for forming the bound state and breaking the electroweak symmetry. This outcome follows from the presence of four-fermion interactions with a super-critical coupling, and uses the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio mechanism to break the global $SO(5)$ symmetry. The Higgs potential is found to be insensitive to high energy scales due to the existence of an approximate …
This article reviews the Little Higgs models of electroweak symmetry breaking and their phenomenology. Little Higgs models incorporate a light composite Higgs boson and remain perturbative until a scale of order 10 TeV, as required by precision electroweak data. The collective symmetry breaking mechanism, which forms the basis of Little Higgs models, is introduced. An explicit, fully realistic implementation of this mechanism, the Littlest Higgs model, is then discussed in some detail. Several other implementations, including simple group models and models with T parity, are also reviewed. Pre…
Partial top quark compositeness is a crucial aspect of theories with strong electroweak symmetry breaking. Together with the heavy top partners that lift the top quark mass to its observed value, these theories predict correlated modifications of the top quark's electroweak couplings. Associated measurements therefore provide direct constraints on the ultraviolet structure of the underlying hypercolour dynamics. In this paper we employ a minimal version of top compositeness to discuss how measurements related to the top's electroweak gauge interactions can inform the potential composite nature…
We present preliminary results for simulations of SO(4)-gauge theory with two Dirac Wilson fermions transforming according to the vector representation. We map out the phase diagram including the strong coupling bulk phase transition line as well as the zero PCAC-mass line. In addition, we measure the pseudo scalar and vector meson masses, and investigate whether the theory features chiral symmetry breaking. If the theory is used for breaking the electroweak symmetry dynamically it is the orthogonal group equivalent of the Minimal Walking Technicolor model but with the following distinctive fe…
Recent LHC data, together with the electroweak naturalness argument, suggest that the top squarks may be significantly lighter than the other sfermions. We present supersymmetric models in which such a split spectrum is obtained through "geometries": being "close to" electroweak symmetry breaking implies being "away from" supersymmetry breaking, and vice versa. In particular, we present models in 5D warped spacetime, in which supersymmetry breaking and Higgs fields are located on the ultraviolet and infrared branes, respectively, and the top multiplets are localized to the infrared brane. The …
In models with dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, this breaking is normally communicated to quarks and leptons by a set of vector bosons with masses generated via sequential breaking of a larger gauge symmetry. In reasonably ultraviolet-complete theories of this type, the number of stages of breaking of the larger gauge symmetry is usually equal to the observed number of quark and lepton generations, $N_{gen.}=3$. Here we investigate the general question of how the construction and properties of these models depend on $N_{gen.}$, regarded as a variable. We build and analyze models with i…
We construct a weakly coupled, renormalizable ultraviolet completion of the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT), based on an SU(5)xSU(2)xU(1) gauge theory with a discrete Z_2 symmetry. Our model reproduces the complete structure of the LHT below the 10 TeV scale, including the collective symmetry breaking mechanism which solves the little hierarchy problem. The model is manifestly free of anomalies, including both gauge/gravitational anomalies and anomalies involving T-parity. At the TeV scale, the model contains additional states not present in the LHT. We estimate the impact of these st…
We present a new Little Higgs model, motivated by the deconstruction of a five-dimensional gauge-Higgs model. The approximate global symmetry is $SO(5)_0\times SO(5)_1$, breaking to $SO(5)$, with a gauged subgroup of $[SU(2)_{0L}\times U(1)_{0R}]\times O(4)_1$, breaking to $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$. Radiative corrections produce an additional small vacuum misalignment, breaking the electroweak symmetry down to $U(1)_{EM}$. Novel features of this model are: the only un-eaten pseudo-Goldstone boson in the effective theory is the Higgs boson; the model contains a custodial symmetry, which ensures t…
We build a minimal neutral naturalness model in which the top partners are not charged under QCD, with a pseudo Goldstone Higgs arising from $SO(5)/SO(4)$ breaking. The color-neutral top partners generate the Higgs potential radiatively without quadratic divergence. The misalignment between the electroweak scale and global symmetry breaking scale is naturally obtained from suppression of the Higgs quadratic term, due to cancellation between singlet and doublet top partner contributions. This model can be embedded into ultraviolet holographic setup in composite Higgs framework, which even reali…
Twin Higgs (TH) models explain the absence of new colored particles responsible for natural electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). All known ultraviolet completions of TH models require some non-perturbative dynamics below the Planck scale. We propose a supersymmetric model in which the TH mechanism is introduced by a new asymptotically free gauge interaction. The model features natural EWSB for squarks and gluino heavier than 2 TeV even if supersymmetry breaking is mediated around the Planck scale, and has interesting flavor phenomenology including the top quark decay into the Higgs and the up…
Solutions to the electroweak hierarchy problem typically introduce a new symmetry to stabilize the quadratic ultraviolet sensitivity in the self-energy of the Higgs boson. The new symmetry is either broken softly or collectively, as for example in supersymmetric and little Higgs theories. At low energies such theories contain naturalness partners of the Standard Model fields which are responsible for canceling the quadratic divergence in the squared Higgs mass. Post the discovery of any partner-like particles, we propose to test the aforementioned cancellation by measuring relevant Higgs coupl…
We investigate the renormalization of the quark-mixing matrix in the Electroweak Standard Model. We show that the corresponding counterterms must be gauge independent as a consequence of extended BRS invariance. Using rigid SU(2)_L symmetry, we proof that the ultraviolet-divergent parts of the invariant counterterms are related to the field renormalization constants of the quark fields. We point out that for a general class of renormalization schemes rigid SU(2)_L symmetry cannot be preserved in its classical form, but is renormalized by finite counterterms. Finally, we discuss a genuine physi…
We analyze the ultraviolet to infrared evolution and nonperturbative properties of asymptotically free ${\rm SU}(N) \otimes {\rm SU}(N-4) \otimes {\rm U}(1)$ chiral gauge theories with $N_f$ copies of chiral fermions transforming according to $([2]_N,1)_{N-4} + ([\bar 1]_N,[\bar 1]_{N-4})_{-(N-2)} + (1,(2)_{N-4})_N$, where $[k]_N$ and $(k)_N$ denote the antisymmetric and symmetric rank-$k$ tensor representations of SU($N$) and the rightmost subscript is the U(1) charge. We give a detailed discussion for the lowest nondegenerate case, $N=6$. These theories can exhibit both self-breaking of a st…
A composite model of quarks and bosons is proposed in which a spin $1/2$ isospin doublet $ψ$ is the basic building block of quarks and bosons in the standard model. The $ψ$ has two components $v$ and $w$ with charges $Q=\frac{1}{3}e$ and $Q=0$, respectively, that combine to form the three generations of colored quark flavors. A strong force described by a triplet of massless gluons bind the constituents called geminis. The confining constituent non-Abelian $SU(2)_C$ field theory is called constituent dynamics with a confining energy scale $Λ_{CD}$. The constituent dynamics condensate $\langle\…
We consider a minimal Lee-Wick (LW) extension to the Standard Model in which the fields providing the most important contributions to the cancellation of quadratic divergences are the lightest. Partners to the SU(2) gauge bosons, Higgs, top quark, and left-handed bottom quark are retained in the low-energy effective theory, which is valid up to approximately 10 TeV; the remaining LW partners appear above this cutoff and complete the theory in the ultraviolet. We determine the constraints on the low-energy spectrum from the electroweak parameters S and T, and find LW states within the kinematic…
The Twin Higgs model is the preeminent example of a theory of neutral naturalness, where the new particles that alleviate the little hierarchy problem are Standard Model (SM) singlets. The most promising collider search strategy, based on rare Higgs decays, is nevertheless not effective in significant regions of the parameter space of the low energy theory. This underlines the importance of phenomenological studies on ultraviolet completions of the Twin Higgs model, which must lie at a scale lower than 5-10 TeV. We pursue this course in the context of non-supersymmetric completions, focusing o…
We consider scenarios where strong conformal dynamics constitutes the ultraviolet completion of the physics that drives electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that in theories where the operator responsible for the breaking of conformal symmetry is close to marginal at the breaking scale, the dilaton mass can naturally lie below the scale of the strong dynamics. However, in general this condition is not satisfied in the scenarios of interest for electroweak symmetry breaking, and so the presence of a light dilaton in these theories is associated with mild tuning. We construct the effective the…
Based on two postulations that (i) the Higgs boson has a large bare mass $m_H \gg m_h \simeq 125 $ GeV at the characteristic energy scale $M_c$ which defines the standard model (SM) in the ultraviolet region, and (ii) quadratic contributions of Feynman loop diagrams in quantum field theories are physically meaningful, we show that the SM electroweak symmetry breaking is induced by the quadratic contributions from loop effects. As the quadratic running of Higgs mass parameter leads to an additive renormalization, which distinguishes from the logarithmic running with a multiplicative renormaliza…
We present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S and T parameters within strongly-coupled models of electroweak symmetry breaking with a light Higgs-like boson. We use a general effective Lagrangian, implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} with Goldstones, gauge bosons, the Higgs-like scalar and one multiplet of vector and axial-vector massive resonance states. Using a dispersive representation and imposing a proper ultraviolet behaviour, we obtain S and T at the next-to-leading order in terms of a few resonance parameters. The experimentally allowed range …
We investigate a scale-invariant $B-L$ scenario where the Standard Model (SM) is supplemented with a dark scalar $ϕ$ which has gauge \& Yukawa interactions, with the couplings $g_{BL}$ and $y$, respectively, leading to radiative plateau inflation at scale $ϕ=M$ in the ultraviolet (UV), while dynamically generating the Electroweak and Seesaw scales \textit{á lá} Coleman-Weinberg in the infrared (IR). This is particularly achieved by implementing threshold corrections at an energy scale $μ_T$ arising due to the presence of vector-like fermions. We show that implementing the inflationary observab…
