We derive logarithmically enhanced two-loop virtual electroweak corrections for arbitrary fermion-scattering processes at the TeV scale. This extends results previously obtained for massless fermion scattering to processes that involve also bottom and top quarks. The contributions resulting from soft, collinear, and ultraviolet singularities in the complete electroweak Standard Model are explicitly extracted from two-loop diagrams to next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy including all effects associated with symmetry breaking and Yukawa interactions.
We review a recent calculation of the two-loop next-to-leading logarithmic electroweak corrections to the form factors for massless chiral fermions coupling to an SU(2)xU(1) singlet gauge boson.
The dominant electroweak double logarithmic corrections to the process $e^+e^-\to f\bar f$ at high energy are found in all orders of perturbation theory. In contrast to results in simple Yang-Mills theories these corrections do not exponentiate.
In the QCD context, the non-singlet structure functions of u and d -quarks are identical, save the initial quark densities. Electroweak radiative corrections, being flavor-dependent, bring further difference between the non-singlets. This difference is calculated in the double-logarithmic approximation and the impact of the electroweak corrections on the non-singlet intercepts is estimated numerically.
We derive the high energy asymptotic behavior of gauge boson production cross section in a spontaneously broken SU(2) gauge theory in the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. On the basis of this result we obtain the logarithmically enhanced two-loop electroweak corrections to the differential cross section of W-pair production at ILC/CLIC up to the second power of the large logarithm.
We present results for the complete one-loop electroweak logarithmic corrections for general processes at high energies and fixed angles. Our results are applicable to arbitrary matrix elements that are not mass-suppressed. We give explicit results for 4-fermion processes and gauge-boson-pair production in electron-positron annihilation.
We summarize results for the complete one-loop electroweak logarithmic corrections for general processes at high energies and fixed angles. Our results are applicable to arbitrary matrix elements that are not mass-suppressed. We give explicit results for W-boson-pair production in e^+e^- annihilation.
We discuss recent results for the asymptotic behavior of fermion scattering amplitudes in the Sudakov limit. The results include next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic electroweak corrections and are used for the analysis of fermion-antifermion pair production in e+e- annihilation at high energy. The importance of the subleading logarithmic contributions is emphasized and the fermionic contributions to the Abelian form factor at two loops are discussed.
We consider two-loop leading and next-to-leading logarithmic virtual corrections to arbitrary processes with external massless fermions in the electroweak Standard Model at energies well above the electroweak scale. Using the sector-decomposition method and alternatively the strategy of regions we calculate the mass singularities that arise as logarithms of Q^2/MW^2, where Q is the energy scale of the considered process, and 1/εpoles in D=4-2εdimensions, to one- and two-loop next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The derivations are performed within the complete electroweak theory with spontane…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of two-loop electroweak corrections at energies Q >> M_W, where logarithms of the type ln(Q/M_W) become dominant. The calculation of the leading and next-to-leading logarithmic terms for massless and massive fermion-scattering processes is summarized. The derivations are performed diagrammatically within the spontaneously broken electroweak theory. We find that the soft and collinear singularities resulting from photons can be factorized into a QED-like term and that, up to logarithms of the Z-W mass ratio, the effects of symmetry breaking cancel. This result …
We consider hadronic production of a Z boson in association with a jet and study one- and two-loop electroweak logarithmic corrections in the region of high Z-boson transverse momentum, p_T >> M_Z, including leading and next-to-leading logarithms. Numerical results for the LHC and Tevatron colliders are presented. At the LHC these corrections amount to tens of per cent and will be important for interpretation of the measurements.
We describe a formalism for calculating electroweak Sudakov logarithms in the Coulomb gauge. This formalism is applicable to arbitrary electroweak processes. For illustration we focus on the specific reactions e^+e^- -> f \bar{f} and e^+e^- -> W_T^+W_T^-, W_L^+W_L^-, which contain all the salient details of dealing with the various types of particles. We discuss an explicit two-loop calculation and have a critical look at the (non-)exponentiation and factorisation properties of the Sudakov logarithms in the Standard Model.
The infrared structure of spontaneously broken gauge theories is phenomenologically very important and theoretically a challenging problem. Various attempts have been made to calculate the higher order behavior of large double-logarithmic (DL) corrections originating from the exchange of electroweak gauge bosons resulting in contradictory claims. We present results from two loop electroweak corrections for the process $g \longrightarrow f_{\rm R} {\bar f}_{\rm L}$ to DL accuracy. This process is ideally suited as a theoretical model reaction to study the effect of the mass gap of the neutral e…
We present results on the two-loop leading and angular-dependent next-to-leading logarithmic virtual corrections to arbitrary processes at energies above the electroweak scale. In the `t Hooft-Feynman gauge the relevant Feynman diagrams involving soft and collinear gauge bosons γ, Z, W^\pm coupling to external legs are evaluated in the eikonal approximation in the region where all kinematical invariants are much larger than the electroweak scale. The logarithmic mass singularities are extracted from massive multi-scale loop integrals using the Sudakov method and alternatively the sector-decomp…
Using the next-to-leading order low energy effective Hamiltonian for $|ΔB|=1$, $ΔC=ΔU=0$ transitions, the contributions of electroweak penguin operators in $ B^-(\overline {B_d^0})\rightarrow PP$ and $PV$ decays are estimated in the standard model. We find that, for some channels, the electroweak penguin effects can enhance or reduce the QCD penguin and/or tree level contributions by at least $30\%$, and can even play dominant role.
Recent results for the asymptotic behavior of fermion scattering amplitudes in the Sudakov limit are presented including next-to-leading logarithmic corrections. These are used for the analysis of the dominant electroweak corrections to the fermion-antifermion pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at high energy.
We develop the framework to perform all-orders resummation of electroweak logarithms of Q/M for inclusive scattering processes at energies Q much above the electroweak scale M. We calculate all ingredients needed at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order and provide an explicit recipe to implement this for 2 $\to$ 2 processes. PDF evolution including electroweak corrections, which lead to Sudakov double logarithms, is computed. If only the invariant mass of the final state is measured, all electroweak logarithms can be resummed by the PDF evolution, at least to LL. However, simply identifying…
We employ an effective Lagrangian approach to derive the leading-logarithm two-loop electroweak contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a_mu. We show that these corrections can be obtained using known results on the anomalous dimensions of composite operators. We confirm the result of Czarnecki et al. for the bosonic part and present the complete sin^2 θ_W dependence of the fermionic contribution. The approach is then used to compute the leading-logarithm three-loop electroweak contribution to a_mu. Finally we derive, in a fairly model-independent way, the QED improvement of new-p…
We compute the MSSM one-loop contributions to the asymptotic energy behaviour of fermion-antifermion pair production at future lepton-antilepton colliders. Besides the conventional logarithms of Renormalization Group origin, extra SUSY linear logarithmic terms appear of "Sudakov-type". In the TeV range their overall effect on a variety of observables can be quite relevant and drastically different from that obtained in the SM case.
At future linear $e^+e^-$ collider experiments in the TeV range, Sudakov double logarithms originating from massive boson exchange can lead to significant corrections to the cross sections of the observable processes. These effects are important for the high precision objectives of the Next Linear Collider. We use the infrared evolution equation, based on a gauge invariant dispersive method, to obtain double logarithmic asymptotics of scattering amplitudes and discuss how it can be applied, in the case of broken gauge symmetry, to the Standard Model of electroweak processes. We discuss the dou…
Electroweak radiative corrections give rise to large negative, double-logarithmically enhanced corrections in the TeV region. These are partly compensated by real radiation and, moreover, affected by selecting isospin-noninvariant external states. We investigate the impact of real gauge boson radiation more quantitatively by considering different restricted final state configurations. We consider successively a massive abelian gauge theory, a spontaneously broken SU(2) theory and the electroweak Standard Model. We find that details of the choice of the phase space cuts, in particular whether a…
In Next Linear Colliders at TeV scale, electroweak double logarithmic corrections, which come from the infrared behaviors of theory can not be neglected. It is well known that in QED and QCD, double logarithmic corrections are resummed to all orders, and these corrections can be exponentiated, resulting in the Sudakov form factor. However it is never trivial that double logarithmic corrections in electroweak theory can be exponentiated, because of the spontaneous breaking of symmetry and the pattern of that. We discuss the electroweak double logarithmic corrections at two loop level and explai…
We present the complete analytical result for the two-loop logarithmically enhanced contributions to the high energy asymptotic behavior of the vector form factor and the four-fermion cross section in a spontaneously broken SU(2) gauge model. On the basis of this result we derive the dominant two-loop electroweak corrections to the neutral current four-fermion processes at high energies.
We discuss the evaluation of the collinear single-logarithmic contributions to virtual electroweak corrections at high energies. More precisely, we proof the factorization of the mass singularities originating from loop diagrams involving collinear virtual gauge bosons coupled to external legs. We discuss, in particular, processes involving external longitudinal gauge bosons, which are treated using the Goldstone-boson equivalence theorem. The proof of factorization is performed within the 't Hooft--Feynman gauge at one-loop order and applies to arbitrary electroweak processes that are not mas…
We sum up the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic virtual electroweak corrections to the high energy asymptotics of the neutral current four-fermion processes for light fermions to all orders in the coupling constants using the evolution equation approach. From this all order result we derive finite order expressions through next-to-next-to leading order for the total cross section and various asymmetries. We observe an amazing cancellation between the sizable leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic contributions at TeV energies.
We derive the high energy asymptotic of one- and two-loop corrections in the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic approximation to the differential cross section of $W$-pair production at the LHC. For large invariant mass of the W-pair the (negative) one-loop terms can reach more than 40%, which are partially compensated by the (positive) two-loop terms of up to 10%.
High energy observables are characterized by large electroweak radiative corrections of infrared origin; double logarithms are present even for inclusive cross sections, thus violating the Bloch Nordsieck theorem. This effect, related to the initial states carrying nonabelian isospin charges, is here investigated for {\sl any} inclusive cross section in the SU(2)$\otimes$U(1) symmetric limit, that is appropriate for energies much higher than the weak scale. We develop a general formalism allowing to calculate the all order double log resummed cross sections once the hard (tree level) ones are …
In the empirically sensible limit in which QCD, t-quark Yukawa, and scalar-field-interaction coupling constants dominate all other Standard-Model coupling constants, we sum all leading-logarithm terms within the perturbative expansion for the effective potential that contribute to the extraction of the Higgs boson mass via radiative electroweak symmetry breaking. A Higgs boson mass of 216 GeV emerges from such terms, as well as a scalar-field-interaction coupling constant substantially larger than that anticipated from conventional spontaneous symmetry breaking. The sum of the effective potent…
We study electroweak Sudakov corrections in high energy scattering, and the cancellation between real and virtual Sudakov corrections. Numerical results are given for the case of heavy quark production by gluon collisions involving the rates $gg \to t \bar t, b \bar b, t \bar b W, t \bar t Z, b \bar b Z, t \bar t H, b \bar b H$. Gauge boson virtual corrections are related to real transverse gauge boson emission, and Higgs virtual corrections to Higgs and longitudinal gauge boson emission. At the LHC, electroweak corrections become important in the TeV regime. At the proposed 100 TeV collider, …
A complete description of W and Z boson production at high-energy hadron colliders requires the resummation of large Sudakov double logarithms which dominate the transverse momentum (q_T) distribution at small q_T. We compare different prescriptions for performing this resummation, in particular implicit impact parameter space resummation versus explicit transverse momentum space resummation. We argue that the latter method can be formulated so as to retain the advantages of the former, while at the same time allowing a smooth transition to finite order dominance at high q_T.
Previously neglected effects of the gauge boson mass difference are included through the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic approximation.
Starting from a theoretical representation of the electroweak component of four-fermion neutral current processes that uses as theoretical input the experimental measurements at the Z peak, we consider the asymptotic high energy behaviour in the Standard Model at one loop of those gauge-invariant combinations of self-energies, vertices and boxes that contribute all the different observables. We find that the logarithmic contribution due to the renormalization group running of the various couplings is numerically overwhelmed by single and double logarithmic terms of purely electroweak (Sudakov-…
To match the expected experimental precision at future linear colliders, improved theoretical predictions beyond next-to-leading order are required. At the anticipated energy scale of sqrt(s)=1 TeV the electroweak virtual corrections are strongly enhanced by collinear-soft Sudakov logarithms of the form log^2(s/M^2), with M being the generic mass scale of the W and Z bosons. By choosing an appropriate gauge, we have developed a formalism to calculate such corrections for arbitrary electroweak processes. As an example we consider in this letter the process e^+e^- --> f fbar and study the pertur…
The top-quark Yukawa coupling is too large to permit radiative electroweak symmetry breaking to occur for small values of y, the Higgs self-coupling, to leading-logarithm order. However, a large y solution leading to a viable Higgs mass of approximately 220 GeV does exist, and differs from conventional symmetry breaking by an approximately five-fold enhancement of the Higgs self-coupling. This scenario for radiative symmetry breaking is reviewed, and the order-by-order perturbative stability of this scenario is studied within the scalar field theory projection of the standard model in which th…
This PhD thesis is concerned with one-loop virtual electroweak corrections to arbitrary processes in the high-energy limit. Complete results are presented for the leading and subleading logarithms of large ratios of energy scales to mass scales. These results include the logarithmic dependence on the photon and weak-boson masses, on the light-fermion masses, as well as on the Higgs- and top-masses in the heavy-Higgs and heavy-top limit. All sources of electroweak logarithmic corrections are taken into account, including the exchange of soft and/or collinear electroweak gauge bosons as well as …
We demonstrate the stability under subsequent-to-leading logarithm corrections of the quartic scalar-field coupling constant $λ$ and the running Higgs boson mass obtained from the (initially massless) effective potential for radiatively broken electroweak symmetry in the single-Higgs-Doublet Standard Model. Such subsequent-to-leading logarithm contributions are systematically extracted from the renormalization group equation considered beyond one-loop order. We show $λ$ to be the dominant coupling constant of the effective potential for the radiatively broken case of electroweak symmetry. We d…
We investigate the Sudakov double logarithmic corrections to the form factor of fermion in the SU(2)XU(1) electroweak theory. We adopt the familiar Feynman gauge and present explicit calculations at the two loop level. We show that the leading logarithmic corrections coming from the infrared singularities are consistent with the "postulated" exponentiated electroweak Sudakov form factor. The similarities and differences in the "soft" physics between the electroweak theory and the unbroken non-abelian gauge theory (QCD) will be clarified.
We present an automated implementation for the calculation of one-loop double and single Sudakov logarithms stemming from electroweak radiative corrections within the Sherpa event generation framework, based on the derivation in[1]. At high energies, these logarithms constitute the leading contributions to the full NLO electroweak corrections. As examples, we show applications for relevant processes at both the LHC and future hadron colliders, namely on-shell W boson pair production, EW-induced dijet production and electron-positron production in association with four jets, providing the first…
We calculate the leading-logarithmic and next-to-leading-logarithmic electroweak corrections to the charm-top-quark contribution to the effective $|ΔS| = 2$ Lagrangian, relevant for the parameter $ε_K$. We find that these corrections lead to a $-0.5\%$ shift in the corresponding Wilson coefficient. Moreover, our calculation removes an implicit ambiguity in the standard-model prediction of $ε_K$, by fixing the renormalization scheme of the electroweak input parameters.
We have studied the effect of one-loop logarithmic electroweak radiative corrections on WZ and $Wγ$ production processes at the LHC. We present analytical results for the leading-logarithmic electroweak corrections to the corresponding partonic processes du -> WZ, Wgamma. Using the leading-pole approximation we implement these corrections into Monte Carlo programs for $pp\to lν_l l'\bar l', lν_lγ$. We find that electroweak corrections lower the predictions by 5-20% in the physically interesting region of large transverse momentum and small rapidity separation of the gauge bosons.
In future collider experiments at the TeV scale, large logarithmic corrections originating from massive boson exchange can lead to significant corrections to observable cross sections. Recently double logarithms of the Sudakov-type were resummed for spontaneously broken gauge theories and found to exponentiate. In this paper we use the virtual contributions to the Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions to obtain the next to leading order kernel of the infrared evolution equation in the fixed angle scattering regime at high energies where particle masses can be neglected. In this regime the virtu…
We calculate the virtual electroweak Sudakov (double) logarithms at one- and two-loop level for arbitrary on-shell/on-resonance particles in the Standard Model. The associated Sudakov form factors apply in a universal way to arbitrary non-mass-suppressed electroweak processes at high energies, although this universality has to be interpreted with care. The actual calculation is performed in the temporal Coulomb gauge, where the relevant contributions from collinear-soft gauge-boson exchange are contained exclusively in the self-energies of the external on-shell/on-resonance particles. In view …
We present complete one-loop radiative corrections to the decay rate of a top quark into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark, and for the decay of a charged Higgs boson into leptons. The results are discussed in the framework of the two Higgs boson extension of the Standard Model suggested by supersymmetry. The effect of electroweak corrections after exclusion of universal corrections $Δr$ is found to decrease the partial width of the top quark typically by 5%.
We consider virtual electroweak corrections to the form factors for massless chiral fermions coupling to an SU(2)xU(1) singlet gauge boson in the asymptotic region $s\gg M_W^2$, where the invariant mass $s$ of the external gauge boson is much higher than the weak-boson mass scale. Using the sector-decomposition method we compute mass singularities, which arise as logarithms of $s/M_W^2$ and $1/ε$ poles in $D=4-2ε$ dimensions, to one- and two-loop next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. In this approximation we include all contributions of order $α^l ε^{k} log^{j+k}(s/M_W^2)$, with $l=1,2$ and $j…
To match the precision of present and future measurements of W-boson production at hadron colliders, electroweak radiative corrections must be included in the theory predictions. In this paper we consider their effect on the transverse momentum (p_T) distribution of W bosons, with emphasis on large p_T. We evaluate the full electroweak O(α) corrections to the process pp -> Wj including virtual and real photonic contributions. We also provide compact approximate expressions which are valid in the high-energy region, where the electroweak corrections are strongly enhanced by logarithms of \hat{s…
In models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking which sensitively involve the third generation, such as top quark condensation, the effects of the new dynamics can show up experimentally in Z->b\bar{b}. We compare the sensitivity of Z->b\bar{b} and top quark production at the Tevatron to models of the new physics. Z->b\bar{b} is a relatively more sensitive probe to new strongly coupled U(1) gauge bosons, while it is generally less sensitive a probe to new physics involving color octet gauge bosons as is top quark production itself. Nonetheless, to accomodate a significant excess in Z->b\b…
In perturbation theory the infrared structure of the electroweak interactions produces large corrections proportional to double logarithms log^2 (s/m^2), similar to Sudakov logarithms in QED, when the scale s is much larger than the typical mass m of the particles running in the loops. These energy growing corrections can be particularly relevant for the planned Next Linear Colliders. We study these effects in the Standard Model for the process e+ e^->f fbar and we compare them with similar corrections coming from SUSY loops.
We consider the effect of next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak corrections to Standard Model 2-to-2 processes, taking into account the potentially large double logarithms originating from both real and virtual corrections. A study of the leading Sudakov logarithms is presented and Bloch-Nordsieck (BN) violations are discussed for processes at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In particular, we focus on the processes Z/photon+jet and also the ratio of Z to photon production. This ratio is known to be insensitive to NLO QCD corrections but this is not expected to be the case for the electroweak…
In the absence of a tree-level scalar-field mass, renormalization-group methods permit the explicit summation of leading-logarithm contributions to all orders of the perturbative series within the effective potential for $SU(2)\times U(1)$ electroweak symmetry. This improvement of the effective potential function is seen to reduce residual dependence on the renormalization mass scale. The all-orders summation of leading logarithm terms involving the dominant three couplings contributing to radiative corrections is suggestive of a potential characterized by a plausible Higgs boson mass of 216 G…
Using soft-collinear effective theory, the leading-log radiative electroweak corrections are written in a closed and analytical form for the hadronic cross section of Higgs production through vector boson fusion, qq->qqH, one of the most promising channels for studying the Higgs boson at the LHC. The simple leading-log resummation is compared with a full next-to-leading-log calculation, and its accuracy is found to be of order 1% up to 10 TeV, i.e. better than the accuracy of PDFs. Corrections are found to be larger than predicted by one-loop fixed order approximations at LHC energies. The met…
We determine the real parts of electroweak matching conditions relevant for top quark pair production close to threshold in e+e- annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) order. Numerically the corrections are comparable to the NNLL QCD corrections.
The distribution of W and Z bosons produced with small transverse momentum (pt) at hadron colliders receives important contributions from large logarithms arising from soft gluon emission. Although conventionally the all-orders resummation of these `Sudakov' logarithms is performed in impact parameter (Fourier transform) space, pt-space resummation is also possible, and offers certain advantages. We present a detailed phenomenological analysis of W and Z production at small pt at the Tevatron $p \bar p$ collider, using pt-space resummation. A good description of the CDF and D0 data can be obtai…
We consider the general chiral effective action which parametrizes the nonlinear realization of the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry with a light Higgs, and compute the one-loop ultraviolet divergences coming from Higgs and electroweak Goldstone fluctuations using the background field method. The renormalization of the divergences is carried out through operators of next-to-leading order in the chiral counting, i.e. of O(p^4). Being of the same order in power counting, the logarithmic corrections linked to these divergences can be as important as the tree-level contributions fr…
We compute the dominant logarithmically enhanced two-loop electroweak corrections to the electron-positron scattering differential cross section in the high energy limit for large scattering angles. Depending on the scattering angle and energy the two-loop corrections may exceed one percent and are important for the high-precision luminosity spectrum determination at a future linear collider.
Future colliders will probe the electroweak theory at energies much larger than the gauge boson masses. Large double (DL) and single (SL) logarithmic virtual electroweak Sudakov corrections lead to significant effects for observable cross sections. Recently, leading and subleading universal corrections for external fermions and transverse gauge boson lines were resummed by employing the infrared evolution equation method. The results were confirmed at the DL level by explicit two loop calculations with the physical Standard Model (SM) fields. Also for longitudinal degrees of freedom the approa…
The soft function relevant for the production of an electroweak boson (photon, W, Z or H) with large transverse momentum at a hadron collider is computed at next-to-next-to-leading order. This is the first two-loop computation of a soft function involving three light-cone directions. With the result, the threshold resummation for these processes can now be performed at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.
We calculate the three-loop soft function for the production of an electroweak boson (Higgs, $γ$, $W^\pm$, $Z$) with large transverse momentum at a hadron collider. It is the first time a soft function for a three-parton process is computed at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). As a technical novelty, we perform the calculation in terms of forward-scattering-type loop diagrams rather than evaluating phase space integrals. Our three-loop result contains color-tripole contributions and explicitly confirms predictions on the universal infrared structure of QCD scattering amplitudes …
In this work we revisit the algorithm of Denner and Pozzorini for the calculation of one-loop electroweak Sudakov logarithms and we automate it in the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. We adapt the formulas for modern calculations, keeping light-quarks and photons strictly massless and dealing with infrared divergences via dimensional regularisation. We improve the approximation by taking into account additional logarithms that are angular dependent. We prove that an imaginary term has been previously omitted and we show that it cannot be in general neglected for $2\rightarrow n$ processes with $n>…
